Description
提案する解決策は、短距離高速通信のための方法および装置に関し、特に、短距離光通信リンクで発光ダイオードを使用する方法および装置に関する。
光ファイバを介する通信は成熟した技術である。電子信号は光信号に変換され、光信号は、光信号を光リンクで搬送する光ファイバに結合される。光ファイバリンクの他端で光検出器が光信号を電子信号に変換し、接続が完了する。電子信号を光信号に変換する手段は例えば、超高速で長距離に対してはレーザダイオードを使用し、高速で中距離に対しては発光ダイオードを使用する。
発光ダイオードおよびレーザダイオードからの信号を光ファイバに結合する手段は、当業界で充分に確立されている。米国特許第5,448,676号明細書は発光ダイオードをファイバの中心に整列させる手段を記載しており、米国特許第5,631,992号明細書は、ロッドレンズを使用して光源を光ファイバに結合することに重点を置いており、米国特許公開第2007/0031089号明細書は、高効率の方法で光を結合する手段を記載している。米国特許第4,466,696号明細書はさらに、同一手段で2地点間の通信リンクを形成するためにレーザダイオードまたは発光ダイオードを光ファイバに同様に結合することについて記載している。これらの方法は全て、仲介光学機器を使用することによって発光源の出射角を光ファイバの受光角に機械的に一致させる必要がある。
発光ダイオードを光ファイバに結合する上での進行中の課題は、発光ダイオードおよび光ファイバの物理的寸法の不整合である。公称的に、マルチモード光ファイバは60ないし100ミクロンの直径を有する。発光ダイオードは少なくとも3倍の大きさであり、公称的に300ミクロンである。屈折光学系を使用して光を光ファイバに収束させない限り、光の大部分は失われる。小さめの出射角および小さい開口を有するレーザダイオードが使用される場合、レーザダイオードのコストおよび出射角は、発光ダイオードの場合と同じ問題を引き起こす。
発光ダイオードはコストがずっと低く、かつ中距離に適しているが、それでもなお短距離用には考えられない。これはコスト上の制約のためである。長距離および中距離の通信は膨大な量のデータを超高速で搬送することができ、コストは通信量で容易に償却される。短距離では、データの量はずっと少なく、かつ通常、単一のユーザで償却しなければならない。この短距離通信の問題の一例は「ラストマイル問題」と呼ばれる。光ファイバを地域社会の公共地点まで伸ばすことは実行可能であり、これは一般的な慣行である。この公共地点から、光ケーブルリンクを介して各ユーザに接続することは、思い止まらざるをえないほどのコストがかかり、かつ各ユーザに提供できる帯域幅を制限する。この「ラストマイル」リンクは現在、帯域幅が制限された銅導体を介して接続されている。
具体的に言うと、屈折光学系および機械的保持装置のようないかなる二次装置も使用せずに、発光ダイオードを光ファイバに結合する手段が必要である。
開示する発明は、標準銅導体を光ファイバに置き換えることを現実的にして、光ファイバを介して高速で短距離を通信する手段を提供する。これは、インターネット高速通信におけるラストマイル問題の解決策になり得る。
本書の開示は、大きいダイの発光ダイオードまたはレーザダイオードを使用する先行技術の方法と比較して、非常に低いコストで短期の通信を確立する手段を提供するのに特に効果的である。
マルチモード光ファイバの直径より実質的に小さいマイクロ発光ダイオードは、光ファイバの一端に接合されたときに、光源の出射角と光ファイバの受光角との間の不整合を埋めるために屈折素子を使用する必要無く、照明または通信の手段として、すなわちそれを目的として、光(信号)を光ファイバに結合するためのカプラになる。
提案する解決策の1つの態様では、ファイバの一端の表面にマイクロ発光ダイオードが配置された状態のクラッディング付き光ファイバ(すなわち光ファイバコア)用のカプラが提供される。発光ダイオードは、導体が取り付けられた接触パッド付き基板上に実装される。2つの導体は、発光ダイオードを制御する電子手段になる駆動電子部品への接続をもたらす。
提案する解決策の別の態様では、直径を有する光ファイバのケーブルリンクの端部を受容しかつ固定するとともに、カプラの長手軸を画定する開口と、前記長手軸と略同一直線上にあるエミッタ領域を有するマイクロLEDダイとを含む、短距離高速通信用のカプラが提供される。
提案する解決策の別の態様では、短距離高速通信用の光リンクが提供される。当該光リンクは、少なくとも1つの光カプラと、少なくとも一方の端部が前記軸線に対し垂直に劈開され、前記端部が前記カプラの前記開口に挿入される光ファイバとを含み、前記マイクロLEDが前記光ファイバのコアと当接し、前記LED出射領域が光ファイバのコアの直径の2分の1より小さい直径を有する。
提案する解決策のさらなる態様では、局所信号分配点と、前記信号分配点と複数の加入者の敷地との間に延びる複数の光リンクとを含む、電気通信ネットワークが提供される。
提案する解決策のさらなる態様では、直径を有する光ファイバによる短距離高速通信のためのマイクロ発光ダイオード(LED)実装組立体が提供される。当該組立体は、表面および裏面を有する基板と、前記表面に実装されたマイクロLEDダイとを含み、前記LEDは光ファイバの直径の3分の1未満の直径の出射領域を有し、前記マイクロLEDを駆動するための導体に接続するために前記裏面にコンタクトパッドが設けられた、マイクロ発光ダイオード(LED)実装組立体を提供する。

発光ダイオード技術の最近の進歩は、直径が数ミクロンであり表面から数百ミクロン以下という小さな発光ダイオード装置を作製することを可能にした。マイクロLEDとして知られるそのような装置は、光ファイバに光源を直接結合する手段、すなわち図1に示すような光信号結合を達成する手段を提供する。さらに、そのような装置は、標準的発光ダイオードより狭い出射角度をもたらす一体型凹面鏡またはマイクロレンズを用いて作製することができる。図1は、クラッディング102を備えたマルチモード光ファイバ100および光ファイバ100の一端の劈開面104に配置されたマイクロLED200を示す。典型的には、光ファイバコア100は公称的に60ミクロンの直径を有する一方、マイクロLED200は公称的に20ミクロンの開口を有する。図示する実現例では、マイクロLED200は、コンタクトパッド302を備えかつ導体304が取り付けられた状態で示されたPCBキャリア300基板上に実装される。図示された2つの導体304は、接続されるとマイクロLED200の電子制御を行う駆動電子部品(図示せず)への接続を達成するためのものである。PCBキャリア300基板は円形である必要はない。
そのようなマイクロLED装置200の特性は、光ファイバの受光角に近い角度で光を提供する手段として役立つ。すなわち、そのようなマイクロLED装置200は、図2に示すように光ファイバ100の受光角に近い角度202で光を出射するのに役立つ。そのような小さな光源(200)から光ファイバ100に入る光は、ファイバ100の受光角より低い出射角202で広がり、高効率の光信号結合を確実にする。
提案する解決策の実施形態では、図1に示すように光ファイバ100の垂直劈開面104にマイクロLED200を実装するための組立体400(図3および図4)を提供する。光ファイバ100の直径の3分の1以下のマイクロLED200は、光学的または機械的仲介部品無しに、マイクロLED200を光ファイバ100に突合せ結合することを可能にする。発光ダイオード200の直径は20ミクロンである。マルチモード光ファイバコア100の直径は60ミクロンである。確実を期すために言うと、これらの寸法は単なる例であって、原理は光源が光ファイバの直径より何倍も小さいことである。

提案する解決策の好適な実施形態では、実装組立体400は、GaAsから成る本発明を制限することなく、ドライバおよびインピーダンス整合部品500を好ましくはマイクロLEDダイ204の反対側の基板300の裏側に備えた、小さな(PCB)基板300に実装されたマイクロLEDダイ204を含む。導体304は、外部信号に接続するために実装組立体400に取り付けられる。別の実施形態では、マイクロLED基板204はドライバ電子部品(500)をも含むので、マイクロLED200を変調および駆動するために外部デジタル信号だけが要求される。
マイクロLED204が非常に小型であり、光ファイバ100に取り付けることができない分野では、実用上の目的で、ソケット600(またはキャリア)に実装されたマイクロLED組立体400を提供することが好ましい。図5に示す通り(正確な縮尺ではない)、ソケット600は、マイクロLED組立体400のための台座602と、予め劈開された光ファイバ100をマイクロLED204と略同一直線上に挿入するための開口604とを含む。挿入は適切なスペーサ410によって制限される。ソケット600を作成するために使用される材料は、光ファイバジャケット106の直径のばらつきに適応するように柔軟である一方、結合の完全性を維持するのに充分な強度を有するという特性を持つ。光ファイバ100を開口に挿入した後、速硬化性エポキシ606を使用して結合を固定することができることが想定される。
提案する解決策の別の実施形態では、図5Bに示すように、複数のマイクロLED組立体400がキャリア600に実装される。そのような多重組立体キャリア600は、図5Cに示すように近所の信号分配点に特に適応される。
導体304の数は、例えば単信方式または二重通信方式の伝送能力を有するPCB基板の関数として決定される。
光ファイバ通信の標準は、1260から1360nmまで延びる波長帯域(図6)で1300nmで運用するように確立されている。
今日の技術は、出射が充分に狭いので2つの異なる波長のサブバンドを図6に示すように標準帯域内に受け入れることのできる、発光ダイオードの設計を可能にする。提案する解決策の実現例では、アップストリームおよびダウンストリームのシグナリングサブチャネル用に、1つのマイクロLEDはw1=1280nmが中心になり、もう1つはw2=1320nmが中心になるように構築される。本発明は、アップストリームまたはダウンストリームシグナリングに対するサブチャネルの特定の関連付けに制限されず、また特定の通信チャネルの波長にも制限されない。
提案する解決策では、中心領域がエミッタ210(マイクロLED)であり、周囲環状領域が光検出器212(フォトダイオード)である、GaAsデバイスを構築することができる。出射領域210が直径dを有する場合、出射領域はΠ(d/2)2となる。光検出器212の直径がDである場合、光検出器212の領域はΠ((D/2)2−(d/2)2)となる。d=20ミクロン、D=100ミクロンの場合、検出器212の領域は、エミッタ210の24倍の大きさになる。これは、光ファイバ100の反対側の端部から入ってくる減衰した信号を検出するために要求される増幅の必要性を低減する。
好適な実施形態では、光検出器212を光ファイバ100の反対側の端部から入ってくる光信号にだけ反応させるために、各検出器212は、検出器212がその一部を構成しているエミッタ210からの信号を拒絶するように、ノッチフィルタを使用することができる。図7に関連して、w1を出射するエミッタ210は、検出器212にw2用のノッチフィルタを有し、かつ図8に関連して、w2を出射するエミッタ210は対応する周囲検出器212にw1用のノッチフィルタを有する。ノッチフィルタは薄膜または層を含むことができる。2つの装置を含む2つの組立体400を区別するために、色分けを使用することができる。
代替的に、本書に開示した手段、すなわち本書に開示した装置はまた、自動車および航空機のようなシステムのみならず、情報の高速交換を必要とするサブシステムの単純または複雑な組織に対しても、コマンドおよび制御の短距離通信を可能にする。
好適な実施形態に関連して本発明を図示し説明したが、添付の特許請求の範囲によって規定される本発明の趣旨および範囲から逸脱することなく、それらに形状および細部の様々な変化を施すことができることを当業者は理解されるであろう。
Claims (40)
- 直径を有する光ファイバのケーブルリンクの端部を受容しかつ固定するとともに、カプラの長手軸を画定する開口と、
前記長手軸と略同一直線上にあるエミッタ領域を有するマイクロLEDダイと、を含む短距離高速通信用の光ファイバカプラ。 - LED組立体基板を受容するための、前記長手軸に垂直な台座と、
表面および裏面を有するLED組立体基板と、
を含み、
前記マイクロLEDが前記表面に実装され、
前記マイクロLEDを駆動するために導体に接続するためのコンタクトパッドが前記裏面に設けられた、請求項1に記載のカプラ。 - 前記基板は略円形である、請求項1または2に記載のカプラ。
- 前記LED組立体は、前記マイクロLEDを駆動しかつ電子部品パッケージと交換される電気信号のために電気信号インピーダンスを整合するように構成された、電子部品パッケージを含む、請求項1ないし3のいずれかに記載のカプラ。
- 前記マイクロLEDダイはさらに、前記マイクロLEDの出射領域の周りに環状光検出器を含む、請求項1ないし4のいずれかに記載のカプラ。
- 前記組立体は前記環状光検出器の上にノッチフィルタを含む、請求項1ないし5のいずれかに記載のカプラ。
- 前記ノッチフィルタは薄膜または層の1つである、請求項6に記載のカプラ。
- 前記基板はさらに、前記光ファイバケーブルリンクの劈開端部に当接するためのスペーサ要素を含む、請求項1ないし7のいずれかに記載のカプラ。
- 請求項1ないし8のいずれかに記載の少なくとも1つの光カプラと、前記軸に対し垂直に劈開された少なくとも1つの端部を有するとともに、前記端部が前記カプラの前記開口内に挿入されて成る光ファイバとを含み、前記マイクロLEDは前記光ファイバのコアに当接し、前記LEDの出射領域は前記光ファイバのコアの直径の少なくとも2分の1より小さい直径を有する、短距離高速通信用の光リンク。
- 第1光カプラおよび第2光カプラを含み、前記光ファイバは前記軸に対し垂直に劈開された第1および第2端部を有し、各光ファイバ端部は対応する光カプラに挿入され、前記光ファイバの各々における光カプラの各前記中央マイクロLEDエミッタ領域は、前記光ファイバの反対側の端部の前記環状光検出器領域が感応する波長帯域で出射するように構成された、請求項9に記載の光リンク。
- 各光カプラは前記光カプラの光検出器領域上にノッチフィルタを含み、前記ノッチフィルタは、前記光ファイバの対応する反対側の端部における前記カプラの前記マイクロLED出射領域の前記出射波長帯域に感応する、請求項10に記載の光リンク。
- 前記光ファイバがマルチモード光ファイバである、請求項9ないし11のいずれかに記載の光リンク。
- 局所信号分配点と、前記信号分配点と複数の加入者の敷地との間に延びる、請求項9ないし12のいずれか一項に記載の複数の光リンクとを含む、電気通信ネットワーク。
- 直径を有する光ファイバによる短距離高速通信のためのマイクロ発光ダイオード(LED)実装組立体であって、
表面および裏面を有する基板と、
前記表面に実装されたマイクロLEDダイと、
を含み、
前記LEDは前記光ファイバの直径より3分の1より小さい直径の出射領域を有し、
前記マイクロLEDを駆動するために導体に接続するためのコンタクトパッドが前記裏面に設けられた、組立体。 - 前記マイクロLEDエミッタ領域は前記基板に対し中心に配置された、請求項14に記載の組立体。
- 前記基板は略円形である、請求項14または15に記載の組立体。
- 前記組立体は、前記マイクロLEDを駆動しかつ電子部品パッケージと交換される電気信号のために電気信号インピーダンスを整合するように構成された、電子部品パッケージを含む、請求項14ないし16のいずれかに記載の組立体。
- 前記マイクロLEDダイはさらに、前記マイクロLED出射領域の周りに環状光検出器を含む、請求項14ないし17のいずれかに記載の組立体。
- 前記組立体は前記環状光検出器の上にノッチフィルタを含む、請求項14ないし18のいずれかに記載の組立体。
- 前記ノッチフィルタは薄膜または層の1つである、請求項19に記載の組立体。
- 前記基板はさらに、前記光ファイバの劈開端部に対して当接するためのスペーサ要素を含む、請求項14ないし20のいずれかに記載の組立体。
- 第1および第2ノード間でシグナリングおよびデータの少なくとも1つを伝達するための短距離通信システムであって、
前記第1ノードにおける第1マイクロ発光ダイオード(LED)組立体と、
前記第1および前記第2ノード間において、第1および第2端部を有し、各端部がコア領域を有する光ファイバと、
前記第2ノードにおける第2マイクロLED組立体と、
を含み、
各前記マイクロLED組立体は、エミッタ領域を有する対応するマイクロLEDを有し、各マイクロLED組立体は、対応するマイクロLEDエミッタ領域が前記光ファイバの前記対応する端部に直交かつ当接する状態で実装され、
前記エミッタ領域は前記コア領域の少なくとも3分の1より小さい、短距離通信システム。 - 前記光ファイバはマルチモード光ファイバである、請求項22に記載のシステム。
- 各前記マイクロLED組立体は、前記対応するマイクロLEDが実装された基板を含み、前記基板はマイクロLED駆動電子部品との接続を達成するためのコンタクトパッドを有する、請求項22または23に記載のシステム。
- 各マイクロLED組立体はさらに、外部電気信号を伝達するためのマイクロLEDドライバ電子部品を含む、請求項24に記載のシステム。
- 光ファイバと、
LEDの出射角と前記ファイバの受光角の不整合を埋めるための屈折光学系無しで光通信のために前記ファイバの一端に接合/結合された、前記ファイバの直径より実質的に小さい第1マイクロ発光ダイオード(LED)と、を含む、短距離通信システム。 - 前記光ファイバはマルチモード光ファイバである、請求項26に記載のシステム。
- 前記LEDの直径は約20ミクロンである、請求項27に記載のシステム。
- 前記ファイバのコアの直径は約60ミクロンである、請求項28に記載のシステム。
- 前記LEDの光を受光しかつそれを電気信号に変換するために、前記ファイバの他端に配設された光検出器をさらに含む、請求項26ないし29のいずれか一項に記載のシステム。
- 前記LEDは、前記ファイバの受光角に近い出射角度をもたらす一体型凹面鏡またはマイクロレンズを用いて作製される、請求項26ないし30のいずれか一項に記載のシステム。
- 前記LEDは前記ファイバの直交面に実装される、請求項26ないし31のいずれか一項に記載のシステム。
- 前記LEDを変調するために外部デジタル信号だけが要求されるように、前記LEDはドライバ電子部品をも有する基板上に設けられる、請求項26ないし32のいずれか一項に記載のシステム。
- 前記基板は、前記LEDを有する面とは反対側の面に導体コンタクトを有する、請求項33に記載のシステム。
- LEDの出射角と光ファイバの受光角の不整合を埋めるための屈折光学系無しで光通信のために前記光ファイバの一端に接合/結合された、前記光ファイバの直径より実質的に小さいマイクロ発光ダイオード(LED)を含む、短距離通信システムにおける光ファイバのためのカプラ。
- 前記LEDの直径は約20ミクロンである、請求項35に記載のカプラ。
- 前記ファイバのコアの直径は約60ミクロンである、請求項36に記載のシステム。
- 前記LEDは、前記ファイバの受光角に近い出射角度をもたらす一体型凹面鏡またはマイクロレンズを用いて作製される、請求項35、36、または37に記載のカプラ。
- 前記LEDを変調するために外部デジタル信号だけが要求されるように、前記LEDはドライバ電子部品をも有する基板上に設けられる、請求項35ないし38のいずれか一項に記載のカプラ。
