Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a print control apparatus and a print control method.
2. Related Art Inkjet printers that perform printing by ejecting ink onto a print medium using a print head having a nozzle row in which nozzles are arranged are known. In an ink jet printer, a phenomenon (misting) that the trajectory of the ink droplet is disturbed due to, for example, the ink droplet ejected from the nozzle soaring due to the airflow around the print head can occur.
Mist ink droplets do not land on the print medium, or even if they land, the landing position deviates from the position where the ink should originally land.
An inkjet head is known in which one or more first nozzles having an ink discharge amount W1 are arranged on the same substrate, and a second nozzle having a relationship of ink discharge amount W2> W1 is arranged at least at one end of the nozzle row. (See Patent Document 1).
The ink droplets ejected from the nozzle are considered to be less susceptible to airflow and less likely to be mist as the size thereof increases (that is, the weight increases). On the other hand, large-sized ink droplets tend to have a noticeable graininess when they land on the print medium. Therefore, when they are used frequently, the graininess (easiness of dot visibility, a kind of image quality index) in the printed result deteriorates. To do. In other words, it is not always the best result to use large ink droplets to suppress mist formation.
The present invention has been made in view of such a problem, and provides a print control apparatus and a print control method capable of accurately exhibiting the effects of measures for suppressing mist formation.
One aspect of the present invention is a printing control apparatus that controls the ejection of ink by a print head having a nozzle row in which nozzles capable of ejecting ink droplets of a plurality of sizes are arranged, and is positioned at an end of the nozzle row. The ink droplets ejected by the predetermined number of nozzles are ink droplets having a size excluding the minimum size among the plurality of sizes, and the predetermined number when the first printing mode is adopted is the first printing mode. Is less than the predetermined number when the second print mode different from the above is adopted.
According to this configuration, the number of nozzles that are located at the end of the nozzle row and eject ink droplets of a size excluding the minimum size can be made different depending on the print mode. For this reason, when the printing mode (second printing mode) in which the mist generation is relatively likely to occur, the smallest size is excluded from the nozzles located at the end portions that are easily affected by the air current (ink droplets are easily misted). By increasing the number of nozzles that eject ink droplets of a certain size, mist formation can be reliably suppressed.
According to one aspect of the present invention, in the second printing mode, a platen gap (hereinafter referred to as PG) that is a distance from a platen that supports a print medium that receives ink ejection to the print head is the first printing. This mode is wider than the PG in the mode.
According to this configuration, since the PG is wide, misting can be reliably suppressed in the printing mode (second printing mode) in which misting occurs relatively easily.
One aspect of the present invention is that, in the second print mode, the carriage moving speed for mounting the print head and moving the print head in a predetermined direction is higher than the movement speed in the first print mode. It is a fast mode.
According to this configuration, it is possible to reliably suppress misting in the printing mode (second printing mode) in which misting is relatively likely to occur because the carriage moving speed is high.
One aspect of the present invention is that the second printing mode is a mode in which the ejection speed, which is the speed of the ink droplets ejected by the nozzles, is slower than the ejection speed in the first printing mode.
According to this configuration, misting can be reliably suppressed in the printing mode (second printing mode) in which misting is relatively likely to occur because the discharge speed is low.
The technical idea of the present invention can also be expressed as follows. In other words, a print control device that controls the ejection of ink by a print head having a nozzle array in which nozzles that can eject ink droplets of a plurality of sizes are arranged, and adopts a specific print mode among a plurality of employable print modes In such a case, the ink droplets ejected to at least one or more nozzles positioned at the end of the nozzle row are configured as ink droplets having a size excluding the minimum size among the plurality of sizes as one invention. can do.
In one aspect of the present invention, the specific printing mode is a mode in which the ratio of the number of ink droplets of the minimum size to be ejected to the number of ink droplets to be ejected is higher than other printing modes.
According to this configuration, misting can be reliably suppressed in a printing mode (specific printing mode) in which misting is relatively likely to occur because many small ink droplets are used.
The technical idea of the present invention is also realized by a device other than a printing control device. For example, the present invention takes a method (printing control method) including a step executed by a printing control apparatus, a computer program for causing a computer to execute the method, and a computer-readable storage medium storing the program. It may be realized in various categories.

The

FIG. 2 is a flowchart showing print control processing executed by the
A dot pattern (dot pattern) is an array of dots on (dot formation or ink ejection) and off (dot non-formation or ink non-ejection). It also defines dot on / off for each pixel. I can say that. For example, when the
In the present embodiment, each
In the following, the description will be continued by taking as an example a case where the

FIG. 3 simply illustrates the configuration of the
In the example of FIG. 3, the
The
According to such a configuration, the
2. Generate print data:
In this embodiment, the process for suppressing the mist formation mentioned above is performed. Here, the ink droplets ejected from the
An end nozzle should not be understood to refer only to the
FIG. 4 is a flowchart showing details of step S200 (print data generation) in FIG.
In step S <b> 210, the
Next, in step S220, the
In step S230, the
Here, the first printing mode means a printing mode in which ink droplets are not easily misted, and the second printing mode means that ink droplets are misted (at least as compared with the first printing mode). It means easy printing mode. The second print mode is also referred to as a specific print mode. The print mode is a behavior that the
For example, the user can arbitrarily set the print mode by operating the
Note that the specific difference between the first print mode and the second print mode will be described later, and the description of the flowchart of FIG. 4 will be continued here.
In step S240, the
In step S260, the
As described above, when the predetermined number is set to 0 (that is, the first nozzle number = 0) through step S240, all the pixels constituting the ink amount data correspond to the first pixel. In S260, dot distribution processing is executed for all pixels with reference to the first dot distribution table. On the other hand, when the predetermined number is set to a number larger than 0 (first nozzle number or second nozzle number) through step S240 or step S250, some of the pixels constituting the ink amount data are changed to the second pixel. That will be true. For this reason, in step S260, the dot distribution process with reference to the second dot distribution table is performed for the partial pixel (second pixel), and the first pixel is performed for the pixels other than the partial pixel (first pixel). A dot distribution process referring to the dot distribution table is executed.

FIG. 6 shows an SML table 133 as an example of a first dot allocation table, and FIG. 7 shows an ML table 134 as an example of a second dot allocation table. Assume that these tables 133 and 134 are stored in advance in a predetermined storage medium that can be read by the
On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 7, the ML table 134 defines a ratio (dot generation rate) in which each of large dots and medium dots is used with respect to the gradation value of the ink amount. The dot occurrence rate for small dots is not defined. In the ML table 134, the usage rate of small dots in the SML table 133 is defined by being converted into the usage rate of medium dots. For example, when the gradation value exceeds 191, only large dots are used, and only medium dots are used until the gradation value is about 120. As described above, in the dot distribution processing with reference to the ML table 134, each of large dots and medium dots in which the ink amount of the pixel to be processed (second pixel) is a dot having a size excluding the minimum size is generated. Converted to rate.
In step S270, the
For the first pixel, after the dot distribution process, the occurrence rates of large dots, medium dots, and small dots can be non-zero occurrence rates. Therefore, if a dot occurs after halftone processing, it is one of a large dot, a medium dot, and a small dot.
On the other hand, for the second pixel, after the dot distribution process, the occurrence rate of each of the large dots and the medium dots can be an occurrence rate other than 0%, but the occurrence rate of the small dots is 0%. Therefore, if a dot is generated after halftone processing, it can be said that it is one of a large dot and a medium dot. Therefore, performing a dot distribution process referring to the second dot distribution table (ML table 134) for the second pixels assigned to the predetermined number of end nozzles is a specific method for realizing the mist suppression process. It can be said that. Note that steps S260 and S270 may be collectively referred to as halftone processing.

Next, some examples of the first print mode and the second print mode are shown.

Example 4
A print mode in which the ratio of the number of ink droplets (small dots in this embodiment) to be ejected to the number of ink droplets to be ejected is higher than the other print modes (first print mode) is a specific print mode ( This corresponds to one of the second printing modes.
FIG. 9 is a flowchart showing details of step S200 (print data generation) employed in the fourth embodiment. Steps S210, S220, S230, and S270 in FIG. 9 are the same as steps S210, S220, S230, and S270 in FIG. In the following, with respect to FIG. 9, differences from FIG. 4 will be mainly described. In the fourth embodiment, when the first print mode and the second print mode are compared, it is assumed that the latter is a print mode that realizes high image quality. For example, the second print mode is a mode in which the “clean (high definition)” is set for the image quality, and the first print mode is a mode in which the “normal” is set for the image quality. In the fourth embodiment, for convenience, the first print mode is referred to as a non-high quality mode, and the second print mode is referred to as a high quality mode.
In step S230, the
In step S255, the
The high image quality mode is different from the non-high image quality mode in the configuration of the dot distribution table referred to in the dot distribution process. Here, the description will be given again by taking the SML table 133 and the ML table 134 shown in FIGS. When the SML table 133 and the ML table 134 are compared, the SML table 133 naturally corresponds to a dot distribution table that generates more small dots (the use ratio of small dots is higher than other dot distribution tables). By using many small dots, the graininess is improved (the graininess of the dots is less noticeable) and the image quality is improved. Therefore, if the choice of the dot sorting table is either the SML table 133 or the ML table 134, the dot sorting process that basically refers to the SML table 133 is executed in the high image quality mode (step S265), and the non-high image quality is performed. In the mode, dot distribution processing with reference to the ML table 134 is executed (step S245). The SML table 133 is called a high image quality table, and the ML table 134 is called a non-high image quality table. Of course, specific examples of the high image quality table and the non-high image quality table are not limited to the SML table 133 and the ML table 134, but in any case, the high image quality table uses a minimum size ink droplet for non-high image quality. This is a dot sorting table that can be generated more than the table.
In the dot distribution process (step S245) referring to the non-high image quality table, since the occurrence rate of large dots and medium dots is easily obtained, the effect of suppressing mist formation is high in the first place. Therefore, in step S245, there is no need to perform dot distribution processing using a plurality of dot distribution tables as described in step S260 of FIG.
On the other hand, in step S265, as in step S260 of FIG. 4, dot distribution processing is performed while using a plurality of dot distribution tables. That is, the
Steps S245, S265, and S270 may be collectively referred to as halftone processing.
When the print mode is the high image quality mode, the high image quality table and the non-high image quality table are properly used in step S265 as described above, but are assigned to the end nozzles to be subjected to the mist suppression processing. The number of second pixels that are pixels to be generated is significantly smaller than the number of first pixels that are pixels to be assigned to nozzles that are not subjected to the mist suppression process. Therefore, in the high image quality mode, even if the non-high image quality table is used for the dot distribution process for some pixels (second pixels), the minimum size of the ejected ink droplets in the print result The fact that the ratio of the number of ink droplets is higher than in other printing modes (first printing mode) remains the same.
4). Summary:
As described above, according to the present embodiment, the number of end nozzles that eject ink droplets of a size excluding the minimum size among the sizes of the plurality of ink droplets that can be ejected is located at the end of the nozzle row. It can be different depending on the print mode. Therefore, in the second printing mode in which the mist generation is relatively likely to occur, the ink droplets having a size excluding the minimum size are particularly removed with respect to the end nozzles, which are nozzles in which the ink droplets are easily misted due to the influence of the air flow. By increasing the number of nozzles to be discharged, mist formation can be reliably suppressed (see FIG. 4 and Examples 1 to 3). That is, in the present embodiment, when there is a high necessity for suppressing mist formation (during the second printing mode), the mist formation suppression processing is performed for the end nozzles, and the necessity for suppressing mist formation is low (first In the printing mode), (mostly) the mist suppression process is not performed on the end nozzles. For this reason, it is possible to avoid a situation in which a relatively large size dot is frequently used in a situation where mist formation is difficult to occur and the graininess of the printing result is deteriorated.
Further, according to the present embodiment, when a specific print mode is adopted among a plurality of employable print modes, ejection is performed to at least one nozzle (a predetermined number of end nozzles) located at the end of the nozzle row. The ink droplets to be made are ink droplets of a size excluding the minimum size among the plurality of sizes. In other words, in the specific printing mode (second printing mode) in which the mist generation is relatively likely to occur, the minimum size is excluded with respect to the end nozzle, which is a nozzle in which ink droplets are easily misted due to the influence of the air flow. By discharging ink droplets of different sizes, mist formation can be reliably suppressed (see FIG. 9 and Example 4).

The present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and can be carried out in various modes without departing from the gist thereof. For example, the following modifications can be adopted. In the description of the following modified examples, the description of matters common to the above-described embodiment will be omitted as appropriate.
