Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a lens array substrate, an electro-optical device, an electronic apparatus, and a method for manufacturing the lens array substrate.
There is known an electro-optical device including an electro-optical material such as liquid crystal between an element substrate and a counter substrate. Examples of the electro-optical device include a liquid crystal device used as a liquid crystal light valve of a projector. In the liquid crystal device, a light shielding portion is provided in a region where switching elements, wirings, and the like are arranged, and a part of incident light is shielded by the light shielding portion and is not used. In view of this, a lens (microlens) is provided on one of the substrates, and the light that is blocked by the light blocking portion disposed at the boundary between the pixels out of the light that enters the liquid crystal device is condensed and entered into the opening of the pixel. Thus, a configuration for improving the light use efficiency in the liquid crystal device is known (see, for example, Patent Document 1 and Patent Document 2).
In the liquid crystal device described in Patent Document 1, a light shielding film is formed of a metal material such as chromium, nickel, or aluminum in a parting area (peripheral parting) around the display area. A convex microlens bulging outward from the substrate is disposed in the display area, and a convex dummy microlens bulging outward from the substrate is disposed in the parting area so as to overlap the light shielding film in plan view. The microlens that bulges outward from the substrate is formed by transferring a lens shape formed by exposing a photosensitive material to patterning and applying heat treatment to the substrate by anisotropic etching. At the time of this anisotropic etching, the removal amount is larger at the outermost peripheral portion than at the inner side, and the shape of the microlens is different, resulting in variations in the characteristics of the microlens. Therefore, by arranging a dummy microlens that does not contribute to display around the microlens, a difference in the shape of the microlens does not occur in the display region. A plurality of dummy microlenses are formed on one side in one horizontal scanning direction, and the number thereof is not particularly limited.
In the liquid crystal device described in
By the way, in the liquid crystal device described in Patent Document 1, when the photosensitive material is exposed to light, reflected light from the light-shielding film formed of a metal material is added in the parting region, so that the amount of light irradiated to the photosensitive material. Becomes larger than the display area. For this reason, the diameter of the dummy microlens formed in the parting area is smaller than the diameter of the microlens in the display area. Then, when the optical path length adjustment layer is formed so as to cover the convex microlens, the surface of the optical path length adjustment layer reflects different shapes of the microlens in the display area and the dummy microlens having a small diameter in the parting area. Is done. Therefore, in the step of flattening the surface of the optical path length adjusting layer, the density per unit volume of the material of the optical path length adjusting layer during polishing is different from the display area due to the difference in diameter between the microlens and the dummy microlens. Since it differs depending on the parting area, the number of steps for the flattening process increases. However, since Patent Document 1 has a structure in which a cover glass is bonded to the side of the substrate on which the microlens is formed with an adhesive, the flattening process when the optical path length adjustment layer is formed so as to cover the microlens is considered. It has not been.
Further, in the parting area, by further forming a groove as described in
SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is to solve at least a part of the problems described above, and the invention can be implemented as the following forms or application examples.
Application Example 1 A lens array substrate according to this application example is different from a substrate having a plurality of recesses in a first region of a first surface and a substrate covering the first surface and embedding the plurality of recesses. A first lens layer formed of a material having a refractive index; a first light-transmitting layer formed to cover the first lens layer; and a first region surrounding the first region on the first light-transmitting layer. A plurality of first light-shielding portions formed in two regions, the first light-transmitting layer, and the light-shielding portions so as to cover each of the concave portions. A second lens layer having one convex portion, and a plurality of second convex portions disposed on the second region so as to overlap the light shielding portion in a plan view, and the second lens layer so as to cover the second lens layer A second light-transmitting layer formed of a material having a refractive index different from that of the two lens layers and having a substantially flat surface; Wherein the plurality of second protrusions is characterized by being arranged in a row so as to surround the plurality of first protrusions.
According to the configuration of this application example, the lens array substrate includes, in the first region, a lens that swells toward the substrate configured by embedding the concave portion of the substrate with the first lens layer, and the first convex portion of the second lens layer. And a lens that swells on the opposite side of the substrate formed by covering the substrate with a second light-transmitting layer, and a two-stage lens array. The lens array substrate is configured by covering, in the second region, the second convex portion disposed around the first convex portion of the second lens layer with the second light-transmitting layer, and planarly with the light shielding portion. It has an overlapping dummy lens. Accordingly, when forming the first convex portion by transferring the lens shape formed by exposing the photosensitive material to patterning and applying heat treatment to the second lens layer by anisotropic etching, the first convex portion is formed around the first convex portion. Since the two convex portions are formed, the characteristic of the lens can be made uniform by reducing the difference in the shape of the first convex portions arranged in the first region as compared with the case where the second convex portions are not formed.
In such a lens array substrate, when the photosensitive material is exposed to form a lens shape, the diameter of the second convex portion that overlaps the light shielding portion in plan view is such that the reflected light from the light shielding portion is added to the first convexity. It becomes smaller than the diameter of the part. Therefore, when flattening the surface of the second light transmissive layer reflecting the shape of the first convex portion and the shape of the second convex portion, the first convex portion and the second convex portion are adjacent to each other in the first portion. A difference occurs in the density per unit volume of the material of the two light-transmitting layers. Here, in this application example, since the second convex portions arranged around the first convex portion are in one row, the first convex portions are arranged as compared to the case where the second convex portions are arranged in a plurality of rows. A difference in density per unit volume of the material of the second light-transmitting layer between the first region and the second region where the second protrusions are disposed can be reduced. Thereby, the flatness of the surface of the 2nd translucent layer used as the surface layer of a lens array board | substrate can be improved. Moreover, since the man-hour of the planarization process of the 2nd translucent layer in the process of manufacturing a lens array board | substrate can be reduced, the productivity of a lens array board | substrate can be improved.
Application Example 2 In the lens array substrate according to the application example, the second lens layer is provided on the second region so as to overlap the light shielding portion in a planar manner, and the plurality of second convex portions are provided. It is preferable to have the 3rd convex part arrange | positioned so that it may surround.
According to the configuration of this application example, since the third convex portion is arranged around the second convex portion of the second lens layer, the region where the second convex portion is arranged and the third convex portion around the region. The difference in density per unit volume of the material of the second light-transmitting layer in the region where is disposed can be reduced. Thereby, the flatness of the surface of the lens array substrate can be further improved. Moreover, the man-hour of the planarization process of the 2nd translucent layer in the process of manufacturing a lens array board | substrate can be reduced more.
Application Example 3 In the lens array substrate according to the application example described above, it is preferable that the third convex portion is provided in a frame shape.
According to the configuration of this application example, since the third convex portion is provided in a frame shape around the second convex portion arranged in a line around the first region, at the position of each side of the frame shape, It arrange | positions so that the 3rd convex part which follows the 2nd convex part arranged in a line may oppose. Therefore, at the position of each side of the frame shape, the difference in density per unit volume of the material of the second light transmissive layer in the region where the second convex portion is arranged and the region where the third convex portion is arranged can be reduced. .
Application Example 4 In the lens array substrate according to the application example described above, the concave portion, the first convex portion, and the second convex portion are arranged in a first direction and a second direction that intersects the first direction. The width of the portion along the first direction and the width of the portion along the second direction of the third convex portion are 1 / of the arrangement pitch. It is preferable that it is 2 or less.
According to the configuration of this application example, the second protrusions are arranged at substantially the same arrangement pitch along the first direction and the second direction, and the first of the third protrusions arranged in a frame shape around the second protrusions. The width along the direction and the width along the second direction are ½ or less of the arrangement pitch of the second protrusions. Therefore, at the position of each side of the frame shape of the third convex portion, the second convex portion arranged in a line at substantially the same arrangement pitch and the third convex portion continuous with a width of 1/2 or less of the arrangement pitch face each other. Therefore, the difference in density per unit volume of the material of the second translucent layer in the region where the second convex portion is arranged and the region where the third convex portion is arranged can be further reduced. it can.
Application Example 5 In the lens array substrate according to the application example described above, the diameter of the second convex portion may be smaller than the diameter of the first convex portion.
According to the configuration of this application example, the dummy lens formed by covering the second convex portion with the second light-transmitting layer is disposed so as to overlap the light shielding portion in a plane, and thus enters the lens array substrate. The transmitted light does not pass through the dummy lens. Accordingly, since the diameter of the second convex portion is smaller than the diameter of the first convex portion, the light transmitted through the lens array substrate is transmitted even if the characteristics of the dummy lens differ from the lens arranged in the first region. There is no impact.
Application Example 6 An electro-optical device according to this application example includes the first substrate having a plurality of switching elements provided for each pixel and the lens array substrate according to any one of claims 1 to 5. A second substrate disposed to face the first substrate, and an electro-optic layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the recess and the first protrusion Is arranged so as to overlap the pixel region in a planar manner.
According to the configuration of this application example, the electro-optical device includes a first substrate having a switching element, a second substrate disposed so as to face the first substrate, and an electro-optical layer disposed between the two substrates. It has. Since the second substrate includes the lens array substrate of the above application example, the flatness of the surface of the second substrate is improved, and a lens having uniform characteristics formed by the first convex portion of the second lens layer is a pixel region. And are arranged so as to overlap with each other. Accordingly, an electro-optical device that can obtain bright display and excellent display quality can be provided.

According to the configuration of this application example, it is possible to provide an electronic device having a bright display and an excellent display quality.
Application Example 8 A method for manufacturing a lens array substrate according to this application example includes a step of forming a plurality of recesses in the first region of the first surface of the substrate, and an optical refractive index different from that of the substrate on the substrate. Forming a first lens layer so as to cover the first surface and embedding the plurality of recesses, and forming a first light-transmitting layer so as to cover the first lens layer; Forming a light-shielding portion in a second region surrounding the first region on one light-transmitting layer; forming a second lens layer so as to cover the first light-transmitting layer and the light-shielding portion; A step of forming a photosensitive material layer so as to cover the second lens layer; and a plurality of the photosensitive material layers arranged so as to be planarly overlapped with the respective concave portions by exposing and separating the photosensitive material layer The first island-shaped portion and the second region overlap with the light-shielding portion in a plan view, and A patterning step of forming a plurality of second island-shaped portions arranged in a row so as to surround one island-shaped portion and a frame-shaped portion arranged in a frame shape so as to surround the plurality of second island-shaped portions. A heat treatment step of heating the plurality of first island-shaped portions, the plurality of second island-shaped portions, and the frame-shaped portion, the plurality of first island-shaped portions, and the plurality of second island-shaped portions, A plurality of first convex portions in which the frame-shaped portion and the second lens layer are subjected to anisotropic etching, and the surface of the second lens layer reflects the shapes of the plurality of first island-shaped portions; An etching process for forming a plurality of second convex portions reflecting the shapes of the plurality of second island-shaped portions and a third convex portion reflecting the shapes of the frame-shaped portions; Removing a peripheral portion of the portion by a predetermined thickness from the surface side of the second lens layer, and a material having a different refractive index from that of the second lens layer. Forming a second transparent layer so as to cover the second lens layer, characterized in that it comprises a and a planarizing step of planarizing by polishing the surface of the second transparent layer.
According to the manufacturing method of this application example, the photosensitive material layer is divided in the patterning step to form the first island portion and the second island portion, and the first island portion and the second island shape are formed in the heat treatment step. The shape of the first island-like portion in the shape of a lens and the shape of the second island-like shape in the shape of a lens are transferred to the second lens layer in the etching process. In the etching process, the removal amount is larger at the outermost peripheral portion than the inside thereof, but since the second island-shaped portion is arranged around the first island-shaped portion, compared with the case where there is no second island-shaped portion. The difference in the shape of the first convex portion reflecting the shape of the first island-like portion can be reduced. Thereby, the characteristic of the lens comprised by the 1st convex part of the 2nd lens layer and the 2nd translucent layer which were arrange | positioned in a 1st area | region and the shape of the 1st island-shaped part was reflected can be made uniform.
In addition, since the diameter of the second island-shaped portion disposed so as to overlap the light-shielding portion in the patterning process is smaller than the diameter of the first island-shaped portion due to the addition of reflected light from the light-shielding portion, the etching step Thus, the diameter of the second convex portion formed reflecting the shape of the second island-shaped portion is smaller than the diameter of the first convex portion formed reflecting the shape of the first island-shaped portion. Therefore, when flattening the surface of the second light-transmissive layer in which the shape of the first convex portion and the shape of the second convex portion are reflected in the flattening process, the first convex portion and the second convex portion are adjacent to each other. In the matching portion, a difference occurs in the density per unit volume of the material of the second light transmissive layer. Moreover, since the 3rd convex part is arrange | positioned around the 2nd convex part, even when the 2nd convex part and the 3rd convex part adjoin the part where the 2nd convex part is planarized when planarizing the surface of a 2nd translucent layer. A difference occurs in the density per unit volume of the material of the two light-transmitting layers. Here, in this application example, since the second convex portions arranged around the first convex portion are in one row, the first convex portions are arranged as compared to the case where the second convex portions are arranged in a plurality of rows. A difference in density per unit volume of the material of the second light transmissive layer between the first region and the region where the second protrusions are disposed can be reduced. In addition, since the peripheral portion of the third convex portion is removed by a predetermined thickness from the surface side of the second lens layer, the region where the second convex portion is arranged and the region where the third convex portion is arranged The difference in density per unit volume of the material of the second light transmissive layer can be reduced. As a result, the amount of polishing in the planarization process is reduced, and the number of processing steps can be reduced, so that the productivity of the lens array substrate can be improved. In addition, the flatness of the surface of the lens array substrate (second translucent layer) can be improved.

<Microlens array substrate>
Subsequently, the microlens array substrate according to the present embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4. FIG. 4 is a schematic diagram showing the configuration of the microlens array substrate according to the present embodiment. Specifically, FIG. 4A is a schematic sectional view showing the configuration of the microlens array substrate, and FIG. 4B is a schematic plan view showing the configuration of the microlens array substrate. 4A corresponds to the partially enlarged view of FIG. 3, and the vertical direction (Z direction) is reversed from FIG. FIG. 4B is a schematic plan view of the
As shown in FIG. 4A, the
The
The
By embedding each
Incident light that enters the central portion (curved surface portion) of the first microlens ML1 from the
The
The

Returning to FIG. 3, in the liquid crystal device 1 according to the present embodiment, for example, light emitted from a light source or the like is incident from the counter substrate 30 (substrate 11) side including the
In the following, the normal direction of the surface of the counter substrate 30 (substrate 11) is simply referred to as “normal direction”. The “normal direction” is a direction along the Z direction in FIG. 3 and is substantially the same as the normal direction of the element substrate 20 (substrate 21).

The light L5 incident on the end of the first microlens ML1 more obliquely with respect to the normal direction and obliquely toward the outside from the center of the first microlens ML1 is transmitted to the first microlens ML1 and the second microlens ML1. The light L5 emitted from the second microlens ML2 is shielded by the
The light L6 incident on the end portion of the first microlens ML1 with a large inclination with respect to the normal direction is obliquely inclined in the same manner as the light L5 and from the outside of the first microlens ML1 toward the center. It is further inclined and intersects with a line (indicated by a one-dot chain line in FIG. 3) connecting the center of the first microlens ML1 and the center of the second microlens ML2, and enters the end of the second microlens ML2. The light L6 emitted from the second microlens ML2 is not sufficiently refracted and goes straight to the adjacent pixel P side, but is reflected to the adjacent pixel P side, but is reflected by the
As described above, in the liquid crystal device 1, the light L2, L3, and L4 that are blocked by the light blocking region S when traveling straight as they are are converted into the pixel P by the action of the two-stage first microlens ML1 and second microlens ML2. Can be refracted toward the center of the opening region T and transmitted through the opening region T. Further, the light L5 that is refracted by the first microlens ML1 and the second microlens ML2 in the second stage and is shielded by the light shielding region S or the light L6 that is deflected to the adjacent pixel P side is caused by the action of the
In the present embodiment, the optical refractive index of the optical path
When the liquid crystal device 1 is used as a liquid crystal light valve of a projector, if most of the light emitted from the liquid crystal device 1 is inclined with respect to the normal direction, vignetting occurs beyond the swallowing angle of the projection lens. As a result, the light utilization efficiency may decrease. In such a case, the second micro lens ML2 may have a negative refractive power.
In the present embodiment, the
Furthermore, in this embodiment, the dummy microlens MLd is provided only on the second microlens ML2 side (second lens layer 15). However, the dummy microlens may be provided on the first microlens ML1 side.

Next, a method for manufacturing the
First, as shown in FIG. 5A, a
After forming the
Next, a
For the isotropic etching, an etching solution (for example, hydrofluoric acid solution) is used such that the etching rate of the
By the isotropic etching, the
In this step, isotropic etching is performed until the
If isotropic etching is performed until the
In the present embodiment, the

Next, as shown in FIG. 5D, the
Next, as shown in FIG. 5 (e), the
Next, as shown in FIG. 6A, an inorganic material having light transmittance and a higher refractive index than that of the
Next, as shown in FIG. 6B, a resist
6B, the resist
FIG. 9A shows a plan view of the state of FIG. 6C after the resist
The

By the way, in the step of exposing the resist
Therefore, the diameter D4 in the X direction and the Y direction of the
Next, as shown in FIG. 7A, the remaining
In the step shown in FIG. 6B, the resist
Next, as shown in FIG. 7B, anisotropic etching such as dry etching is performed on the
When all the
In the etching process, the
Here, if only the
Therefore, in the present embodiment, the dummy microlens MLd (
In the present embodiment, it is arranged around the second microlens ML2 (
Next, as shown in FIG. 7C, the peripheral portion of the
FIG. 9B is a plan view of the
Further, as shown in FIG. 7C, when the predetermined thickness (depth) for removing the
The formation of the
Next, as shown in FIG. 8A, a
By laminating the
The
Next, as shown in FIG. 8B, an inorganic material having a light transmittance and a refractive index different from that of the
In this step, the first optical path
Next, as shown in FIG. 8C, a planarization process is performed on the first optical path
Here, since the diameter D2 of the
For example, as described in Patent Document 1, when a plurality of
Therefore, the display area E in which the
In the present embodiment, since the
Further, when there is no
Furthermore, since the
Thereby, compared with the case where the
As a result, in the present embodiment, the amount of polishing of the first optical path
Next, as shown in FIG. 4A, a second optical path
The optical path
As described above, the
Subsequently, the

The liquid crystal
As described above, according to the
(1) Since the dummy microlens MLd (convex portion 17) arranged around the second microlens ML2 (convex portion 16) is in a single row, the first microlens MLd is arranged in a plurality of rows compared to the case where the dummy microlenses MLd are arranged in a plurality of rows. The difference in density per unit volume of the material of the optical path
(2) Since the
(3) Since the
