Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a metal-air battery.
In recent years, a metal-air battery has been proposed in which oxygen in the atmosphere is taken in from a positive electrode made of carbon as a positive electrode active material, and a metal is used in the negative electrode as a negative electrode active material (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
The basic configuration of such a metal-air battery is shown below.
The metal-air battery has a negative electrode, a positive electrode, and an electrolytic solution positioned between the negative electrode and the positive electrode, and these are accommodated in an exterior body. The negative electrode is made of porous carbon, and the positive electrode is made of magnesium. A part of the positive electrode is in contact with the atmosphere, and the other part of the positive electrode is in contact with the electrolytic solution.
In such a metal-air battery, the reaction represented by the formula (1) occurs as a whole.
2Mg+O2+2H2O→2Mg(OH)2↓ ・・・(1)
(Chemical formula 1)
2Mg + O 2 + 2H 2 O → 2Mg (OH) 2 ↓ (1)
At this time, in the negative electrode, the oxidation reaction shown in the formula (2) occurs, and the ionized magnesium is eluted from the negative electrode into the electrolytic solution, and the electrons released by the ionization of magnesium pass through the load from the negative electrode. Flow to the positive electrode.
Mg→Mg2++2e− ・・・(2)
(Chemical formula 2)
Mg → Mg 2+ + 2e − (2)
Further, in the positive electrode, oxygen in the atmosphere is taken in and a reduction reaction shown in the formula (3) occurs.
(Chemical formula 3)
O 2 + 2H 2 O + 4e − → 4OH − (3)
However, the above-described metal-air battery has the following problems.
A part of the positive electrode is in contact with the liquid electrolyte. For this reason, with time, the cathode is immersed in the electrolyte due to the capillary phenomenon in porous carbon. As a result, the supply of oxygen from the atmosphere to the positive electrode is hindered. And since oxygen is not supplied to a positive electrode, in the positive electrode, instead of the reduction reaction of Formula (3), the reduction reaction shown in Formula (4) occurs.
(Chemical formula 4)
2H 2 O + 2e − → H 2 + 2OH − (4)
When the reduction reaction of the formula (4) occurs at the positive electrode, the reaction shown in the formula (5) occurs as a whole metal-air battery.
Mg+2H2O→Mg(OH)2↓+H2 ・・・(5)
(Chemical formula 5)
Mg + 2H 2 O → Mg (OH) 2 ↓ + H 2 (5)
In the metal-air battery, when the reaction of the formula (1) occurs, hydrogen is not generated.
However, in the metal-air battery, when the reaction of formula (5) occurs, hydrogen is generated at the positive electrode. Hydrogen generated at the positive electrode causes so-called polarization. Hydrogen generated at the positive electrode becomes bubbles and covers the surface of the positive electrode, preventing the reduction reaction of the formula (3) at the positive electrode, preventing the generation of hydroxide ions at the positive electrode, and preventing discharge in the metal-air battery. Further, in the vicinity of the positive electrode surface, the oxidation reaction shown in the equation (6) occurs, so that hydrogen releases electrons and returns to hydrogen ions. This oxidation reaction also prevents the discharge of the metal-air battery.
H2→2H++2e− ・・・(6)
(Chemical formula 6)
H 2 → 2H + + 2e − (6)
The present invention solves the above-described problems, and an object of the present invention is to prevent the positive electrode from being immersed in an electrolyte, and to supply atmospheric oxygen to the positive electrode. It is to provide a metal-air battery capable of preventing hydrogen generation in
The present invention adopts the following configuration in order to solve the problem. The metal-air battery according to the invention of claim 1 includes a positive electrode made of carbon having an exposed surface exposed to the atmosphere and capable of taking in atmospheric oxygen from the exposed surface, the negative electrode, and the positive electrode. And an electrolysis part that absorbs moisture and forms a gel.
Moisture absorbed by the electrolysis unit forms an electrolyte in the metal-air battery. And according to the knowledge and consideration of the inventor of the present application, since the electrolysis part that absorbed moisture is in the form of a gel, it is possible to keep the electrolytic solution in itself (that is, the electrolysis part). Thus, it is possible to prevent the positive electrode from being immersed in the electrolytic solution. Moreover, it is possible to continue supplying water from the electrolysis part to the positive electrode at the contact part between the electrolysis part and the positive electrode. At the same time, the positive electrode can take in oxygen from the atmosphere from its exposed surface.
The amount of moisture absorbed by the gelled electrolytic portion is such that moisture does not leak out from the electrolytic portion unless a force such as pressure is applied to the electrolytic portion from the outside. Or the water | moisture content absorbed by the electrolysis part is the quantity which a water | moisture content does not leak out from an electrolysis part, even if only this electrolysis part is left still on a flat glass plate, for example.
With such a metal-air battery, the reduction reaction of the formula (3) can be continuously generated at the positive electrode, and the reduction reaction of the formula (4) can be prevented from occurring at the positive electrode. Can be prevented from occurring. It is also possible to prevent the reaction of the formula (6) from occurring at the positive electrode. In the negative electrode, the oxidation reaction of the formula (2) occurs. Therefore, as a whole, the reaction of the formula (1) can be continuously generated, and the reaction of the formula (5) can be prevented from occurring.
According to the knowledge and consideration of the present inventor, the moisture absorbed by the electrolysis part only needs to contain an electrolyte according to the substance forming the electrolysis part. For example, when the electrolytic part absorbs only water that does not contain an electrolyte, if the electrolytic part has no electrical conductivity, or if the electrical conductivity is low, the moisture absorbed by the electrolytic part will not absorb the electrolyte. Need to contain.
In addition, when the electrolysis part absorbs only water not containing the electrolyte, if the electrolysis part has electrical conductivity, the water absorbed by the electrolysis part may contain the electrolyte, It does not need to be included.
When discharge occurs in the metal-air battery, magnesium ions are eluted from the negative electrode in the moisture absorbed by the electrolysis part. With elution of magnesium ions, the negative electrode becomes brittle and the shape of the negative electrode tends to collapse. For example, if the negative electrode is in a state where it is suspended in the electrolytic solution from a lead wire that leads to an external load or the like, the negative electrode is likely to be disconnected from the lead wire with increasing brittleness of the negative electrode.
Here, when the negative electrode is disconnected from the conductive wire, the negative electrode is disconnected from the conductive wire and falls into the electrolytic solution. In the negative electrode dropped in the electrolytic solution, the reaction of the formula (5) occurs. And from the negative electrode which fell in electrolyte solution, magnesium hydroxide diffuses in electrolyte solution, while electrolyte solution is contaminated, hydrogen is generated, and discharge of a metal air battery will be prevented.
However, since the negative electrode is supported from the periphery by the gelled electrolysis part, it is possible to prevent the negative electrode from being disconnected from the conductor even if the fragility of the negative electrode increases.
In addition, since the electrolysis part absorbs moisture and forms a gel, the electrolyte contained in the gel-like electrolysis part is held in the electrolysis part, and the lead is connected to the negative electrode or the positive electrode. Precipitation in the vicinity is prevented. Thereby, it is prevented that the conducting wire is damaged by the electrolyte deposited in the vicinity of the conducting wire.
If the electrolysis part does not absorb moisture and the electrolysis part is in a dry state, the oxidation reaction of the formula (2) does not occur in the negative electrode, and the reduction reaction of the formula (3) does not occur in the positive electrode. Therefore, only when it is necessary to use a metal-air battery, the metal-air battery is ready to start discharging if the electrolysis unit absorbs moisture.
The standard electrode potential of O 2 is 0.401V, the standard electrode potential of H 2 to 0V, the standard electrode potential of H 2 O is -0.828V, the standard electrode potential of Mg is -2.363V. According to calculations performed by the inventors of the present invention based on these values, the electromotive force of the metal-air battery is 1.936 V in the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (1) as a whole. On the other hand, in the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (5) as a whole, the electromotive force of the metal-air battery is 1.535V.
Therefore, when comparing the metal-air battery that generates the reaction shown by the formula (1) as a whole with the metal-air battery that generates the reaction shown by the formula (5) as a whole, the electromotive force of the former metal-air battery is the latter. It is larger than the electromotive force of the metal-air battery.
Moreover, according to the calculation performed by the inventor of the present application, the weight energy density of this metal-air battery is 4.26 Wh / g in the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (1) as a whole. On the other hand, in the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (5) as a whole, the weight energy density of the metal-air battery is 3.38 Wh / g. The weight energy density indicates the capacity of the metal-air battery per unit weight.
Therefore, when comparing the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (1) as a whole with the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (5) as a whole, the weight energy density of the former metal-air battery is Greater than the weight energy density of metal-air batteries.
Furthermore, according to the calculation performed by the present inventor, the volume energy density of the metal-air battery is 7.36 Wh / cc in the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (1) as a whole. On the other hand, in the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (5) as a whole, the volume energy density of this metal-air battery is 5.83 Wh / cc. The volume energy density indicates the capacity of the metal-air battery per unit volume.
Therefore, when comparing the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (1) as a whole and the metal-air battery that generates the reaction represented by the formula (5) as a whole, the former volume energy density is the latter volume energy density. Bigger than.
A metal-air battery according to a second aspect of the present invention is the metal-air battery according to the first aspect, wherein the electrolysis part is a carboxyl bonded with sodium or potassium. It is formed by the weakly acidic cation exchange resin which has a group.
A weakly acidic cation exchange resin having a carboxyl group to which sodium or potassium is bonded absorbs moisture and forms a gel. When the electrolysis part has such a weakly acidic cation exchange resin, sodium ions or potassium ions ionized from the carboxyl group are present in the moisture absorbed by the electrolysis part.
According to the knowledge and consideration of the inventor of the present application, even when the electrolysis part absorbs moisture that does not contain an electrolyte, the electrolysis part has electrical conductivity. Therefore, the moisture absorbed by the electrolytic unit may contain an electrolyte or may not contain an electrolyte.
Moreover, according to the knowledge and consideration of the present inventor, it is not preferable to form the electrolysis part with a strong acid cation exchange resin having a sulfonic acid group.
The ion selectivity of the strongly acidic cation exchange resin increases in the order of H + <Na + <NH 4 + <K + <Mg 2+ <Ca 2+ . For this reason, hydrogen ions are released from the strongly acidic cation exchange resin, and hydrogen is generated in the negative electrode and the positive electrode. This hydrogen becomes bubbles and covers the surfaces of the positive electrode and the negative electrode, thereby hindering the flow of current. Further, in the vicinity of the positive electrode surface, a phenomenon in which hydrogen releases electrons and returns to hydrogen ions is caused, and current flow is hindered.
On the other hand, it is preferable to form the electrolysis part with a weakly acidic cation exchange resin having a carboxyl group to which sodium or potassium is bonded, in order to prevent hydrogen from being generated in the negative electrode or the positive electrode. Since the ion selectivity of the weakly acidic cation exchange resin increases in the order of Na + <K + <Mg 2+ <Ca 2+ <H + , hydrogen ions are captured by the weakly acidic cation exchange resin, and the negative electrode and the positive electrode This is because no hydrogen is produced in the slag. That is, the weakly acidic cation exchange resin works as a depolarizer.
A metal-air battery according to a third aspect of the present invention is the metal-air battery according to the first aspect, wherein the electrolysis part is a strongly basic anion exchange resin. , Agar, and gelatin, and the water absorbed by the electrolysis unit contains an electrolyte.
A strongly basic anion exchange resin, agar, or gelatin absorbs moisture to form a gel and can form an electrolysis part. According to the inventor's knowledge and consideration, when a strongly basic anion exchange resin, agar, or gelatin absorbs moisture to form a gel and forms an electrolytic part, the water absorbed by the electrolytic part is Need to contain electrolyte.
The ion selectivity of the strongly basic anion exchange resin increases in the order of OH − <HSiO 3 − <HCO 3 − <Cl − <NO 3 − <SO 4 2− . For this reason, the strongly basic anion exchange resin can easily release hydroxide ions.
In the positive electrode, hydroxide ions are generated by the reduction reaction of the formula (3). According to the knowledge and consideration of the present inventor, when the strongly basic anion exchange resin forms an electrolytic part, the hydroxide ions generated at the positive electrode pass through the strong basic anion exchange resin to the negative electrode side. Moving. And the hydroxide ion with the smallest ion selectivity leaves | separates from a strongly basic anion exchange resin, couple | bonds with the magnesium ion in the water | moisture content which the electrolysis part absorbed, and magnesium hydroxide precipitates on a negative electrode.
Magnesium ions in the moisture absorbed by the electrolysis unit become magnesium hydroxide, so the magnesium ion concentration in the moisture absorbed by the electrolysis unit does not reach the saturation concentration, and magnesium ions from the negative electrode, It continues to elute in the moisture absorbed by the electrolysis unit.
The ion selectivity of the weakly basic anion exchange resin increases in the order of HCO 3 − <Cl − <SO 4 2− <OH − . According to the inventor's knowledge and consideration, if the electrolytic part is formed by a weakly basic anion exchange resin that absorbs moisture and forms a gel, the hydroxide ions generated at the positive electrode are weakly basic anions. It is trapped in the exchange resin and cannot bind to magnesium ions eluted from the negative electrode.
As a result, when the weakly basic anion exchange resin that absorbs moisture and forms a gel is used as the electrolytic part, the magnesium ions in the water absorbed by the electrolytic part immediately reach the saturation concentration, and the magnesium from the negative electrode Elution of ions stops.
Accordingly, it is not preferable to use a weakly basic anion exchange resin that absorbs moisture and forms a gel as an electrolysis part, because the discharge of the metal-air battery immediately stops.
Since it is a metal-air battery as described above, it is possible to prevent the positive electrode from being immersed in the electrolytic solution, to supply oxygen in the atmosphere to the positive electrode, and to prevent hydrogen generation at the positive electrode. .
