Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a wavelength tunable optical transmission module and a wavelength selection method, and more particularly to a wavelength tunable optical transmission module capable of selecting an arbitrary transmission light wavelength.
光通信に利用される半導体レーザー発光素子には、主にDFB(Distributed-Feedback、分布帰還型)レーザーとFP(Fabry-Perot、ファブリペロー型)レーザーといった2種類の方式が使用されている。 As a semiconductor laser light emitting element used for optical communication, two types of systems such as a DFB (Distributed-Feedback) laser and an FP (Fabry-Perot) laser are mainly used. Since the DFB laser can oscillate only one wavelength stably, it is suitable for high-speed communication. However, since it is necessary to form a concavo-convex diffraction grating in the active layer, the manufacturing cost is high. On the other hand, the FP laser has a plurality of oscillation wavelengths because the active layer is simply constituted by the cleavage plane of the semiconductor crystal, and is not suitable for high-speed communication, but can be manufactured at a low cost (from Non-Patent Document 1). .
FIG. 6 is an explanatory diagram schematically showing optical spectra of a general FP laser and a DFB laser. 6A shows the FP laser, and FIG. 6B shows the DFB laser. The DFB laser has a strong oscillation only at a single oscillation wavelength λ, whereas a plurality of oscillation wavelengths λ1, λ2, λ3.
In recent years, the amount of data transmitted by data communication is increasing. In particular, so-called rich contents including high-quality video and high-quality sound are often distributed via the Internet. Therefore, WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing), which is a communication method for transmitting a plurality of optical signals having different wavelengths through one optical fiber, is generally used in an optical communication network.
In WDM communication, semiconductor laser light sources that oscillate at different wavelengths are required. If all of these are to be covered by a conventional laser light source that oscillates only at a single frequency, it is necessary to prepare a separate light source for each frequency used in the communication. This is not realistic because the cost for maintaining the communication system becomes enormous. Therefore, the use of wavelength tunable lasers that can arbitrarily change the oscillation wavelength with a single laser light source is expanding. In this way, even if a light source of any wavelength becomes unavailable, it is possible to immediately replace the light source and continue communication.
波長可変レーザーには、主に半導体集積型とMEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical Systems、微小電気機械システム)型といった方式が利用される。 As the wavelength tunable laser, methods such as a semiconductor integrated type and a MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) type are mainly used. A semiconductor integrated wavelength tunable laser changes the oscillation wavelength by changing the refractive index of an optical waveguide having a diffraction grating by current or electroheating. The MEMS type wavelength tunable laser changes the oscillation wavelength by mechanically rotating a diffraction grating attached to the outside of the light emitting unit (from Non-Patent Document 2).
図7は、OIF(Optical Internetworking Forum)によって策定されたITLA(Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly、波長可変レーザアセンブリ)についての標準規格であるOIF−ITLA−MSA(Multi-Source Agreement)に準拠する既存の波長可変型光送信モジュール910の構成の一例について示す説明図である(非特許文献3より)。 FIG. 7 shows the existing wavelength tunable conforming to OIF-ITLA-MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) which is a standard for ITLA (Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly) formulated by OIF (Optical Internetworking Forum). It is explanatory drawing shown about an example of a structure of the type | mold optical transmission module 910 (from nonpatent literature 3).
The wavelength tunable
ペルチェ素子916aおよび916bは、TEC(Thermoelectrical Cooler、熱電クーラー)とも呼ばれる。
Since the

The existing wavelength tunable optical transmission module represented by the
However, in data communication, there is a constant demand for cost reduction and power saving as well as an increase in data capacity that can be transmitted. In that sense, the fact that existing optical transmission modules use “DFB laser” and “Peltier element (TEC)” as described above is a major obstacle to cost reduction and power saving. Yes. As described above, the DFB laser is more expensive than the FP laser, and the Peltier element (TEC) consumes a large amount of power.
A technology that can solve this problem and realize a wavelength tunable optical transmission module that does not use a DFB laser or a Peltier element (TEC) is not described in the above-mentioned technical documents. Patent Documents 1 to 4 all describe FP lasers, but are not tunable lasers. Non-Patent Documents 1 to 3 all describe only the existing technology as described above.
An object of the present invention is to provide a wavelength tunable optical transmission module and a wavelength selection method that can obtain a laser beam having an arbitrary wavelength with sufficient accuracy without using a DFB laser or a Peltier element (TEC). It is to provide.
In order to achieve the above object, a wavelength tunable optical transmission module according to the present invention includes a light emitting element that is a Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser, and a plurality of light that passes only light having a specific wavelength different from laser light output from the light emitting element. And an optical switch for switching which band-pass filter the laser light output from the light-emitting element is passed through in accordance with an external switching input.
In order to achieve the above object, a wavelength selection method according to the present invention operates a light emitting element that is a Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser to oscillate and output a laser beam, and the laser beam that is oscillated and output has a predetermined wavelength. The optical switch selects according to the external switching input whether to pass through different band pass filters that pass only the light of the selected light, and the selected band pass filter selectively outputs light of a specific wavelength from the laser light It was made to do.
As described above, the present invention uses a Fabry-Perot type semiconductor laser and extracts light of a specific wavelength from the semiconductor laser using a bandpass filter, and thus does not use a DFB laser or a Peltier element. Thus, it is possible to provide a wavelength tunable optical transmission module and a wavelength selection method having an excellent feature that it is possible to obtain laser light having an arbitrary wavelength with sufficient accuracy at a low cost.
(First embodiment)
Hereinafter, the structure of the 1st Embodiment of this invention is demonstrated based on attached FIG.
First, the basic content of the present embodiment will be described, and then more specific content will be described.
The wavelength tunable
By providing the above configuration, the wavelength tunable
Hereinafter, this will be described in more detail.
FIG. 1 is an explanatory diagram showing a configuration of a wavelength tunable
The
These wavelengths λ1, λ2, λ3,..., So that the wavelength tunable
The
FIG. 3 is an explanatory diagram showing the optical spectrum of the laser light that has passed through the
In the case shown in FIG. 3 (a), only the light of λ1, which is a wavelength that can pass through the
In other words, when the wavelength tunable
The band-
Further, as described in Non-Patent Document 1 described above, the Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser emits light of a plurality of wavelengths at the same time. Therefore, if the communication speed is increased, signal superimposition occurs. It is said that it is not suitable. In the wavelength tunable
(Overall operation of the first embodiment)
Next, the overall operation of the above embodiment will be described.
The wavelength selection method according to the present embodiment operates a light emitting element that is a Fabry-Perot type semiconductor laser to oscillate and output laser light, and the oscillated output laser light passes only light of a specific wavelength provided in advance. An optical switch selects which of a plurality of different bandpass filters is passed according to an external switching input, and the selected bandpass filter selectively outputs light of a specific wavelength from the laser light.
By this operation, this embodiment has the following effects.
