Abstract
A disposable assembly for the sensor assembly includes a body, a flow restriction element, and a fluid pressure membrane. The body has a lid portion and a base portion. The body defines a fluid flow passage that forms an inlet and an outlet. A flow restricting element is positioned in the fluid flow path between the inlet and the outlet. The membrane is positioned along the fluid flow path between the lid portion and the base portion. In order to increase the resistance to pressure in the fluid flow passage, a reinforcing structure such as a ring or a hard disk is positioned between the fluid pressure membrane and the lid portion. The ring or disk can be a separate component or formed on the membrane. The thickness of the membrane adjacent to the sensor access opening in the lid portion can also be increased to obtain pressure resistance.

The invention also relates to a method for producing a cassette capable of receiving high pressure.
Increasingly, modern medical devices, including medical pumps, are controlled by a microprocessor-based system for delivering fluids, solutions, drugs, and drugs to a patient. A typical control of a medical pump allows a medical personnel to enter the fluid dose to be delivered, the rate of fluid delivery, the duration, and the volume of fluid to be infused into the patient User interface. Drug delivery is typically programmed to occur as a continuous infusion or as a single bolus dose.
It is common for multiple drugs to be infused into a patient using a multi-channel infusion pump or using multiple single channel infusion pumps in which different fluids are administered from each channel. Another method of delivering a large number of drugs to a patient is to use an infusion pump to deliver a first drug and a single bolus dose to deliver additional drugs.
When delivering a drug by a single bolus administration, it is important to verify that the correct drug is being delivered to the patient, and that the correct amount of drug is being delivered to the patient. Typically, the caregiver may simply manually write down the amount of drug delivered by bolus administration to the patient's paper chart, and that information may later be electronically entered into the patient's record. Thus, the caregiver may believe that the proper dose has been delivered, while human error has caused accidental drug overdose or underdose. In addition to mistakes in administering the drug, human error can also result in failure to record the drug delivered during a single bolus dose. Thus, the patient's medical records may not represent all of the medication given to the patient. Having an in-line IV sensor capable of measuring a wide range of fluids and flow rates is beneficial for recording the flow rate and the volume of all medications that the patient is given from the IV line. Furthermore, it would be desirable to provide a robust flow sensing method that is low cost and in particular requires a small incremental cost compared to a disposable drug delivery tube set. Furthermore, it would be desirable to provide a flow sensing method that can accurately sense the flow rate of fluids having various physical characteristics, including fluid viscosities that may not be accurately known. Also, the fluid pressure in the disposable part of the flow sensor or in the cassette may be higher than the normal conditions that conventional cassettes experience with conventional use. Accordingly, there is a need for a cassette for a differential pressure flow sensor system that is adapted to monitor drug delivery and that also has the ability to withstand high pressures without failure.

While the invention can take many different forms of embodiment, illustrated in the drawings and described herein below is an example of the invention. This disclosure is to be regarded as an example of the principles of the invention. This disclosure is not intended to limit the broad aspect of the invention to the examples presented herein.
FIG. 1 is a drawing of a differential pressure type
As better shown in FIG. 2, the
As shown in FIGS. 1 through 3, a drug or some other fluid enters the
The
The
As shown in FIGS. 1-3, the
In one embodiment, the reinforcing
The terms “ring” and “annular” are generally used herein to refer generally to a ring shape. For example, oval, oval, or other types of rings or annular shapes do not depart from the invention. This is especially true if the
It is envisioned that a variety of materials may be utilized in manufacturing the
As shown in FIG. 3, the drug enters the
FIG. 4 is an exploded view of a
The
As shown in FIGS. 4-5, a drug or some other fluid enters the
The
The
As shown in FIGS. 4-5, the
The use of
Similarly, the
Accordingly, the
As shown in FIGS. 4-5, the
It is envisioned that a variety of materials may be utilized in manufacturing the
As shown in FIG. 5, the drug enters the
It will be appreciated that the embodiments of FIGS. 1-3 and 4-5 are closely related. The embodiment of FIGS. 1-3 can be viewed as incorporating the separate disk of FIGS. 4-5 as part of an integrally formed membrane. The disc can be considered to be composed of a reinforcing ring, which can include a hole in the center or can include a raised area or protruding portion as shown in FIGS.
Turning now to FIGS. 6a-11b, various ways of forming a differential pressure flow sensor by coupling a disposable part to a reusable part are shown. A differential pressure type
FIGS. 7 a-b show a clip-type connection for the differential
As shown in FIGS. 8a-8c, the differential pressure
FIG. 8 c is an exploded view of
9a to 9c, a differential pressure type
FIGS. 10 a-10 b illustrate a still further embodiment of a differential pressure
Finally, as depicted in FIGS. 11 a to 11 c, the differential pressure
