Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electrophoretic display device applied to electronic paper and the like.
An electrophoretic display device is a device that displays information by using electrophoretic migration, ie, particle movement, of an electrophoretic body (usually electrophoretic particles) in air or in a solvent. In general, an electrophoretic state is controlled by applying an electric field between two substrates, thereby realizing a desired display.
In recent years, the electrophoretic display device has attracted attention especially as an electronic paper. When applied as an electronic paper, it is possible to enjoy advantages such as visibility at the printed matter level (easy for eyes), ease of information rewriting, low power consumption, and light weight.
However, in an electrophoretic display device, display defects, particularly a decrease in contrast, may occur due to particle sedimentation or uneven distribution. In order to prevent this phenomenon, it is employed to form partition walls between the upper and lower electrode substrates to divide the electrophoretic particles, that is, to divide the moving space into minute spaces. This minute space is called a cell or a pixel. In each cell, an ink (display medium) containing an electrophoretic material is enclosed.
Alternatively, it is also possible to form a column with a predetermined pattern between the upper and lower electrode substrates and control the migration state of the electrophoretic particles. In this case, a second partition is formed so as to surround a pillar region formed in a predetermined pattern, and ink (display medium) containing an electrophoretic material is enclosed in the region partitioned by the second partition. Has been.
When the ink (display medium) containing the electrophoretic body is sealed in each cell or a predetermined region, there is a problem that bubbles are mixed. Further, in addition to general bubbles due to air mixing, when the filling rate of the electrophoretic body and the dispersion solvent is partially biased within a predetermined region, the space (part where only the dispersion solvent is almost omitted) is particularly large. There is also a problem that it is likely to occur around the predetermined area.
In order to solve the problem of air bubble mixing, it has been proposed to monitor the pressure (indentation pressure) for laminating two substrates. However, such a control method by pressure monitoring is extremely laborious.
Japanese Patent No. 2777729 (Patent Document 1) discloses a dispersion-type electrophoretic display device using a swellable porous spacer. In this electrophoretic display device, the dispersion system (display medium) in each hole (in each cell) becomes an excessive negative pressure state due to excessive swelling of the swellable porous spacer, and the dispersion system (display medium) is vaporized. In order to solve this problem, it has been proposed to provide a liquid reservoir (dispersion system (display medium)).
However, the present inventors have found that it is not sufficient to simply provide a liquid reservoir from the viewpoint of preventing air bubbles from being mixed when the dispersion system (display medium) is sealed.
The present invention has been made based on such circumstances, and an object of the present invention is to provide an electrophoretic display device in which mixing of bubbles when a display medium is sealed is suppressed, and a method for manufacturing the same.
In the present invention, when a display medium including at least one kind of electrophoretic body is sealed between two opposing substrates, at least one of which is transparent, and a predetermined electric field is applied between the two substrates. An electrophoretic display device in which the display medium displays predetermined information, wherein a first partition formed in a predetermined pattern on one substrate and a first partition formed outside the first partition. 2 partition walls, and an insulator part that partitions a display medium reservoir portion further outside the second partition wall, and each region partitioned by the first partition wall and the second partition wall is defined as a cell. The display medium is included in the cell, and the display medium is also included in the display medium reservoir. The width of the second partition is larger than the width of the first partition. The electrophoretic display device is characterized by being large.
In the electrophoretic display device disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 2777729 (Patent Document 1), the width of the first partition is larger than the width of the second partition (see FIG. 1 of Patent Document 1). . However, from the results of various experiments by the inventors of the present invention, it was confirmed that the effect of preventing bubbles from being mixed when the display medium is sealed can be remarkably improved by making the width of the second partition wall larger than the width of the first partition wall. It was done.
The knowledge of the present inventor was confirmed to be effective not only when the first partition and the second partition form a cell, but also when a column is provided instead of the first partition.
In that case, according to the present invention, a display medium including at least one kind of electrophoretic body is sealed between two opposing substrates, at least one of which is transparent, and a predetermined electric field is generated between the two substrates. An electrophoretic display device in which the display medium displays predetermined information when given, columns formed in a predetermined pattern on one substrate, partitions formed outside the columns, And an insulator for partitioning the display medium reservoir portion further outside the partition wall, the display medium having the display medium in a region partitioned by the partition wall, and the display medium in the display medium reservoir portion. In the electrophoretic display device, the width of the partition wall is larger than the diameter of the column.
From various experimental results by the present inventors, it was confirmed that the effect of preventing bubbles from being mixed at the time of enclosing the display medium can be remarkably improved by making the width of the partition wall larger than the diameter of the column.
It should be noted that the bubble mixing prevention effect at the time of encapsulating the display medium seems to depend to some extent on the specific mode of the display medium enclosing process, but the outside of the partition wall where the display medium reservoir is formed outside the second partition wall or column. If it is formed so as to surround, the effect can be expected in almost all aspects. In addition, the occurrence of a space (a portion from which only the dispersion solvent is almost omitted) that can be formed due to an uneven filling rate of the electrophoretic body and the dispersion solvent is also effectively suppressed.
According to the electrophoretic display device of the present invention, it is possible to provide an electrophoretic display device in which mixing of bubbles at the time of enclosing a display medium is suppressed.

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along line AA of the electrophoretic display device according to the present embodiment.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the electrophoretic display device according to the present embodiment is an electrophoresis as a display medium including at least one kind of electrophoresed between two
In the present embodiment, one transparent substrate 11 (backplane substrate: BP) is formed by forming a transparent electrode such as an Sn electrode or ITO or a thin film transistor on a transparent film such as PET or PEN, and has a thickness of 100 μm. Have. The other transparent substrate 12 (front plane substrate: FP) has a transparent electrode such as ITO formed on PET or PEN, and has a thickness of 100 μm.
On the one
In this specification, the width of the

The other transparent substrate 12 (front plane substrate: FP) is bonded to the top surfaces of the
Each
According to the
Next, a method for manufacturing the
FIG. 3 is a diagram schematically showing a method of manufacturing the electrophoretic display device according to the present embodiment. FIG. 4 is a diagram schematically showing a partition formation step. As shown in FIG. 3 and FIG. 4, in the partition formation step, on the upper surface of one transparent substrate 11 (backplane substrate: BP), for example, by photolithography (exposure by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation → development → firing), A
Next, in the adhesive layer forming step, an adhesive layer is formed on the

The pressing force here is preferably 0.01 to 0.7 MPa, and particularly preferably 0.1 to 0.4 MPa.
As long as the effects of the present invention are exhibited, the
Returning to FIG. 3, after the
Returning to FIG. 3, after the ink filling process, a conductive paste application process is performed. The
Thereafter, as shown in FIG. 3, in the substrate bonding step, the other of the
After that, as shown in FIG. 3, the sheet is cut into a predetermined size by a
According to the present embodiment, although bubbles may be mixed in the
The same effect as that of the above embodiment can be obtained also when a column is provided instead of the first partition. That is, when the pillar is formed in a predetermined pattern instead of the
Next, practical examples actually performed will be described.

Next, materials and characteristics of each member of the electrophoretic display device as a manufacturing object of the present invention will be described in more detail.
As the
The thickness of one
The surface of one
One
The
As a method for forming the
As the
The temperature at which the
As described above, the
In order to increase the adhesion between the
Various known materials can be used for the display medium (ink 21).
As the
The thickness of the
Further functional layers can be added to the
