Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for producing lithium hydroxide from lithium carbonate using an electrodialysis method using a bipolar membrane.
The bipolar membrane is a composite membrane in which a cation exchange membrane and an anion exchange membrane are bonded, and has a function capable of dissociating water into protons and hydroxide ions.
Utilizing this special function of the bipolar membrane, it is incorporated into an electrodialysis apparatus together with a cation exchange membrane and / or an anion exchange membrane, and electrodialysis produces acids and alkalis from various salts. It is used for the production of acids and / or alkalis.
Li2CO3+Ca(OH)2 → 2LiOH+CaCO3
By the way, with the recent spread of lithium batteries and the like, the demand for lithium hydroxide as a lithium source is increasing, and particularly high-purity lithium hydroxide is required.
As a method for producing lithium hydroxide, a method of reacting lithium carbonate and calcium hydroxide has been known for a long time. This reaction is represented by the following formula.
Li 2 CO 3 + Ca (OH) 2 → 2LiOH + CaCO 3
However, the above-described method is carried out batchwise and cannot be carried out continuously, and the productivity is extremely low. In addition, the amount of calcium hydroxide corresponding to the target lithium hydroxide production amount is required, and further, the same amount of calcium carbonate is by-produced, resulting in poor production efficiency, Ca ions etc. being mixed with impurities, It is also difficult to obtain high purity lithium hydroxide.
Therefore, recently, a method for producing lithium hydroxide from these lithium salts using an electrodialysis method using a bipolar membrane using lithium chloride or lithium sulfate obtained from lithium carbonate as a raw material has been proposed. (Patent Documents 1 and 2).
Such a method has an advantage that lithium hydroxide can be continuously produced, and the purity of the obtained lithium hydroxide is also high.
However, in the above method, a bipolar membrane, an anion membrane and a cation membrane are used, and these three kinds of membranes are arranged between an anode and a cathode to form an acid chamber, a salt chamber and an alkali chamber, Since electrolysis of the lithium salt is performed by supplying a lithium salt aqueous solution to the salt chamber, it is necessary to increase the cell voltage, and further improvement is required in terms of production efficiency.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing lithium hydroxide continuously and at a low cell voltage using electrodialysis using a bipolar membrane.
According to the present invention, a water characterized in that lithium carbonate is produced by reacting an organic acid with lithium carbonate to produce an organic acid lithium, and subjecting the organic acid lithium to electrodialysis using a bipolar membrane. A method for producing lithium oxide is provided.
In the production method of the present invention,
(1) By disposing the cation exchange membrane between the two bipolar membranes, the salt chamber and the alkali chamber formed so as to be adjacent to each other through the cation exchange membrane, the anode and the cathode An electrodialyzer having at least one pair between the organic acid lithium and the aqueous solution of the organic acid lithium is supplied to the salt chamber to conduct electrodialysis of the organic acid lithium, and Li ions in the salt chamber are removed from the alkali chamber. To generate lithium hydroxide,
(2) Reusing at least a part of the organic acid generated in the salt chamber by the electrodialysis for the reaction between the lithium carbonate and the organic acid,
Is preferred.
In the production method of the present invention, since lithium carbonate is converted to organic acid lithium and subjected to electrodialysis using a bipolar membrane, carbon dioxide gas is not generated during electrodialysis, and therefore, energization inhibition by carbon dioxide gas does not occur. Electrodialysis can be performed stably and continuously.
In addition, although the solubility of lithium carbonate in water is extremely small, the use of a high solubility in water as the organic acid lithium used for electrodialysis enables electrodialysis using a high-concentration aqueous solution. Electrodialysis can be performed with voltage.
Furthermore, since the organic acid produced in the electrodialysis of lithium organic acid is a weak acid, lithium hydroxide is obtained by electrodialysis using a two-chamber electrodialysis apparatus in which a salt chamber and an alkali chamber are formed between the electrodes. It can be manufactured, and even if it says from the structure of an apparatus, electrodialysis can be implemented with a low cell voltage, and its production efficiency is very high.
On the other hand, when a strong acid salt such as lithium chloride or lithium sulfate is subjected to electrodialysis, the acid produced is a strong acid, so a three-chamber type in which an acid chamber, a salt chamber and an alkali chamber are formed between the electrodes. It is necessary to use an electrodialysis apparatus. That is, the acid ions generated by electrodialysis of the strong acid salt easily diffuse into the alkali chamber through the cation membrane. In order to reliably prevent the acid ions from migrating to the alkali chamber, the bipolar ion in the salt chamber is used. This is because an acid chamber partitioned by a cation exchange membrane must be formed on the membrane side. When using the three-chamber type electrodialyzer, electrodialysis is inevitably performed at a higher cell voltage than the two-chamber type.
However, in the present invention, since electrodialysis is performed using a two-chamber type electrodialyzer, the cell voltage used is low, which is extremely advantageous industrially.
In the present invention, the organic acid produced by electrodialysis can be recovered and reused for the reaction between lithium carbonate and the organic acid, which is also effective from the viewpoint of resource saving.
Referring to FIG. 1, which shows a process for producing lithium hydroxide according to the present invention, in this process, a reaction tank 1, a
In such a process, lithium carbonate (Li 2 CO 3 ) is used as a lithium source, and lithium carbonate and an organic acid (shown as RCOOH in FIG. 1) are each supplied to the reaction tank 1 in the form of an aqueous solution. Then, the organic acid lithium salt (RCOOLi) is generated by mixing and stirring in the reaction vessel 1. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) by-produced by the reaction is discharged out of the process system.
In addition, lithium carbonate is used as the Li source because lithium carbonate is particularly stable among lithium compounds and can be stored, and the target lithium hydroxide itself also contains carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere. This is because it is easily converted to lithium carbonate by reacting with lithium carbonate, and it is industrially extremely advantageous to produce lithium hydroxide using lithium carbonate as a Li source.
The organic acid to be reacted with lithium carbonate is not particularly limited as long as it is water-soluble and its Li salt is water-soluble and can be electrodialyzed. For example, formic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, trichloroacetic acid, dichloroacetic acid, monochloro Acetic acid, thioglycololic acid, monochloroacetic acid, malonic acid, propionic acid, L-lactic acid, D-lactic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, butyric acid, phenolic acid, citric acid, ascorbic acid, picric acid, picoline Examples thereof include acid, benzoic acid, and salicylic acid.
The reaction between the organic acid and lithium carbonate in the reaction tank 1 is generally performed at room temperature and does not require heating.
The aqueous solution of organic acid lithium (RCOOLi) obtained as described above is supplied to the
In the electrodialysis apparatus 5, the bipolar membrane BP and the cation exchange membrane C are positioned between the anode (+) and the cathode (−), and the cation exchange membrane C is positioned between the two bipolar membranes BP. Is arranged.
That is, as understood from FIG. 1, the region in which the anode (+) is accommodated is partitioned from the cathode (−) side by the bipolar film BP, and the
The bipolar membrane BP is disposed so that the anion exchange membrane side faces the anode (+) side.

In addition, as a pre-process for supplying the organic acid lithium aqueous solution to the electrodialyzer, when insoluble matter is mixed in the organic acid lithium aqueous solution, the insoluble matter may cause clogging in the electrodialyzer, It can be removed using a filter or the like. In addition, when a polyvalent metal cation is present in the organic acid lithium aqueous solution, a hydroxide is generated in the electrodialyzer, which may cause malfunction of the operation, or may adversely affect the purity of lithium hydroxide, It is preferable to remove the polyvalent metal cation by using a separation method such as chelate resin or nanofiltration.

The lithium hydroxide aqueous solution has a property of easily absorbing carbon dioxide, and in order to obtain high purity lithium hydroxide, the alkaline liquid tank 7 has a gas phase portion formed of an inert gas such as nitrogen, helium, or argon. Substitution is preferred.
That is, using the electrodialysis apparatus 5 having the above structure, a voltage is applied between the anode (+) and the cathode (−) while circulating the polar liquid to the
In such electrodialysis, the current between the electrodes is generally about 1 to 20 A / dm 2 , preferably about 5 to 15 A / dm 2 when the electrolyte concentration of the solution in contact with the membrane is 1 mol / l. When the electrolyte concentration is high, it is preferable to set the current density lower.
That is, in the aqueous solution of the organic acid lithium supplied to the
Therefore, when the aqueous solution of the organic acid lithium and the aqueous lithium hydroxide solution are circulated through the
In this way, when the LiOH concentration in the

As the high concentration aqueous solution of lithium hydroxide is recovered, water (ion exchange water) is appropriately replenished in the alkaline liquid tank 7 to ensure a constant liquid amount at all times. Is suitable for continuous operation.

Furthermore, the cation exchange membrane C may be a known one, for example, a cation exchange group having a sulfonic acid group, a carboxylic acid group, a phosphonic acid group, a sulfate ester group, a phosphate ester group, etc. A mixture of a plurality of types of ion exchange groups can be used. The cation exchange membrane C may be any of a polymerization type, a condensation type, a uniform type, and a non-uniform type, and may have a reinforcing core as appropriate, or may be a known material such as a hydrocarbon type or a fluorine type. , Any kind of cation exchange membrane derived from the material / manufacturing method, type, etc. Furthermore, if a 2N saline solution is electrodialyzed at a current density of 5 A / dm 2 and functions as a cation exchange membrane having a current efficiency of 70% or more, it is generally called an amphoteric ion exchange membrane. Things can also be used.
The bipolar membrane BP is a composite ion exchange membrane having a structure in which a cation exchange membrane and an anion exchange membrane are bonded to each other. As described above, the anion exchange membrane side is usually the anode (+) side. In addition, the cation exchange membrane side is disposed toward the cathode (−) side.

By performing electrodialysis as described above, a highly concentrated aqueous solution of high purity lithium hydroxide can be obtained, but the greatest advantage of the present invention is that a low cell voltage (voltage applied between the anode and the cathode). ) In that electrodialysis is performed.
That is, lithium carbonate used as the Li source has very low solubility in water (about 0.1 mol / l), but the solubility of organic acid lithium in water is very high. For example, in the present invention, the solubility of lithium lactate in water is about 4 mol / l, which is considerably higher than that of lithium carbonate. (The solubilities are all values at 25 ° C.) Therefore, electrodialysis can be performed using a liquid containing Li at a high concentration, and even when the cell voltage is low, high concentration water can be efficiently used. An aqueous lithium oxide solution can be obtained.
Further, since the Li salt of an organic acid, which is a weak acid, is used for electrodialysis, a two-chamber type electrodialyzer as shown in FIG. 1 can be used, which reduces the cell voltage. It means that high current density is secured and effective electrodialysis is possible.
For example, as proposed in Patent Documents 1 and 2, etc., when lithium hydroxide is produced by subjecting lithium chloride (LiCl) or lithium sulfate (Li 2 SO 4 ) to electrodialysis, in principle, Similar to the invention, electrodialysis using a two-chamber electrodialysis apparatus is possible. However, in this case, since a salt of a strong acid is subjected to electrodialysis, a high concentration of anion (Cl − or SO 4 2− ) is present in the salt chamber. Therefore, the lithium hydroxide cannot be reliably prevented from moving into the adjacent alkali chamber, and the purity of the resulting lithium hydroxide is low.
Accordingly, when lithium hydroxide is produced by subjecting such a strong acid Li salt to electrodialysis, an acid chamber composed of a BP membrane and an A membrane (anion membrane), a salt chamber composed of an A membrane and a C membrane, and C A three-chamber type electrodialysis apparatus in which an alkaline chamber formed by a membrane and a BP membrane is formed between electrodes must be used. When electrodialysis is performed using this type of apparatus, a strong acid Li salt is circulated and supplied to the salt chamber, but the anion (Cl − or SO 4 2− ) in the salt chamber passes through the A membrane. This is because the transition to the acid chamber adjacent to the anode side can be made quickly, so that anion can be effectively prevented from moving to the alkaline chamber where Li ions migrate and lithium hydroxide is generated. However, in electrodialysis using a device in which three chambers are formed between electrodes, the interelectrode resistance is naturally larger than that of a two-chamber type device, so in order to perform electrodialysis at a high current density, A high cell voltage is required.
As described above, in the present invention, since the organic acid Li salt is used for electrodialysis, it is possible to use a two-chamber type electrodialyzer, and from this point of view, electrodialysis with a low cell voltage is possible. Thus, it becomes possible to produce lithium hydroxide continuously and efficiently.
In the present invention, since the regenerated organic acid (RCOOH) can be reused for the reaction with lithium carbonate, it is advantageous from the viewpoint of effective use of resources and resource saving. Furthermore, although lithium carbonate is used as a starting material, no carbon dioxide gas is generated in the electrodialyzer, so that the generation of carbon dioxide gas does not hinder electrodialysis.

<Example 1>
Lithium carbonate (manufactured by Wako Pure Chemical Industries, Ltd.) was added to the lactic acid aqueous solution to prepare 0.83 mol / l lithium lactate.
The bipolar membrane electrodialyzer has a bipolar membrane (manufactured by Astom Co., Ltd., trade name: Neocepta BP-1E) and a cation exchange membrane (manufactured by Astom Co., Ltd., trade name: Neocepta CMB) between a pair of negative and positive electrodes. Filter press type bipolar membrane electrodialysis device in which 4 and 3 plates are arranged in order (effective membrane areas of bipolar membrane and cation exchange membrane are both 0.55 dm 2 / sheet) and an alkali chamber and an acid chamber are formed. An acylator EX-3B type (manufactured by Co., Ltd.) was used.
In addition, 500 ml of the 0.83 mol / l lithium lactate aqueous solution described above was placed in the acid chamber tank of the electrodialysis apparatus and circulated into the acid chamber of the electrodialysis cell. On the other hand, an alkaline chamber tank was charged with 300 ml of a 0.1 mol / l lithium hydroxide aqueous solution and circulated into the alkaline chamber of the electrodialysis cell. As the electrode solution, a 0.5 mol / L sodium hydroxide aqueous solution was used. The operating conditions were constant current operation, a current density of 10 A / dm 2 , and the liquid temperature during operation was set to about 30 ° C.
In addition, the voltage per cell measured the voltage with the multimeter by making a bipolar membrane, a cation membrane, an acid chamber, and a salt chamber into 1 cell, inserting the platinum wire in the both sides of 1 cell. The aqueous solution in the alkaline chamber was sampled at regular intervals, and the lithium concentration of the resulting aqueous lithium hydroxide solution was determined by ICP emission analysis.
