Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a transfer type ink jet recording type recording apparatus.
The applicant has found a phenomenon that when the intermediate transfer member forming the intermediate image is uniformly heated, the surface of the intermediate transfer member has a different temperature depending on the location. The mechanism will be described.
When the intermediate transfer member is viewed as a whole, a plurality of intermediate images are formed side by side with a predetermined interval, and a blank area is formed between adjacent intermediate images. If the image forming area where the intermediate image is formed is the first area and the blank area is the second area, a temperature difference occurs between the first area and the second area after the heating process. The reason is as follows.
FIG. 1A is a cross-sectional view showing a state in which the first region (region where the intermediate image ink is applied to the surface of the intermediate transfer member) is heated. Most of the heat W (thick arrow in the figure) given from the heater from above is taken away as vaporization heat for volatilizing the ink solvent leaving the color material. For this reason, the transfer body itself is not heated so much and the temperature rise is moderate. On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 1B, when heat W is applied to the second region (region where the ink is not applied to the surface of the intermediate transfer member), heat is directly transferred to the transfer member. Temperature rises significantly. By such a mechanism, after heating, a temperature difference is generated on the surface of the intermediate transfer body between the image forming area and the blank area. The temperature difference remains maintained in subsequent recording cycles. Even if the intermediate transfer body is cooled after the transfer process as in
If the process proceeds to the next recording cycle without eliminating the temperature difference, there is an increased possibility of “transfer defects” due to the mechanism described below.
The surface of the transfer body with a cooling amount that sufficiently cools the intermediate transfer surface (relatively low temperature) in the area where the intermediate image was formed, compared to the intermediate transfer body after the transfer process having a temperature difference depending on the location. Is uniformly cooled. Then, the surface of the intermediate transfer member in the blank area is not sufficiently cooled because it is at a higher temperature, and the temperature becomes higher than a predetermined temperature even after cooling. In the next recording cycle, the ink that has landed on the intermediate transfer member region that has reached a temperature higher than usual is volatilized by the heat of the intermediate transfer member before being heated by the heater. The ink volatilizes excessively with the subsequent heating process, and the ink may increase in viscosity beyond an acceptable range. In the transfer process, ink with excessive viscosity strongly adheres to the side of the intermediate transfer member, so that not all of the ink can be transferred to the recording medium at normal transfer pressure, resulting in “image blurring” in the transferred image. End up. One form of “transfer defect” is “image fading”.
On the other hand, it is assumed that the transfer body is uniformly cooled with a cooling amount that sufficiently cools the surface of the intermediate transfer body (relatively high temperature) in the blank area. Then, the surface of the intermediate transfer member in the region where the intermediate image was formed is excessively cooled, and the temperature becomes lower than a predetermined temperature even after cooling. In the next recording cycle, the ink that has landed on the intermediate transfer member area that has become lower than the normal temperature is deprived of heat by the low-temperature intermediate transfer member during the heating process. Therefore, the volatilization of the ink solvent becomes insufficient at a predetermined heating amount, and the ink may not reach the allowable ink viscosity. In the transfer process, the ink that does not have the required viscosity spreads greatly on the recording medium due to the transfer pressure, and an “image blur” occurs in the transferred image. Another form of “transfer failure” is “image flow”.
The present invention has been made based on the recognition of the above-mentioned problems. An object of the present invention is to reduce the occurrence of transfer defects in subsequent recording cycles by reducing the temperature difference that varies depending on the location of the intermediate transfer member produced by the heating process in transfer ink jet recording.
The present invention includes an intermediate transfer member, a recording head that forms an intermediate image by applying ink to the intermediate transfer member, a heating unit that heats the intermediate transfer member on which the intermediate image is formed, and the heating unit. A transfer means for transferring the intermediate image formed on the heated intermediate transfer body to a recording medium, a cooling means for cooling the intermediate transfer body heated by the heating means, and the intermediate transfer body. The cooling of the second region is larger than the first region in the first region where the image is formed and the second region different from the first region including the region sandwiched between the adjacent intermediate images. Control means for controlling the cooling means, or for controlling the heating means so that the heating of the first region is larger than that of the second region.
According to the present invention, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of transfer failure in the subsequent recording cycle by reducing the temperature difference generated in the intermediate transfer body after the image forming area and the blank area are heated.

FIG. 2 is an overall configuration diagram of a transfer type ink jet recording type recording apparatus according to the first and second embodiments. The

The image transfer operation in the above apparatus configuration will be described in the order of processes. While rotating the
In FIG. 4A, the dot area shows an example of an intermediate image immediately after being formed on the
Before and after the first intermediate image forming process, the surface temperature of the intermediate transfer member is approximately equal to the environmental temperature (initial temperature). FIG. 6 is a graph plotting the temperatures of the surface of the intermediate transfer member in the image forming area and the blank area immediately after each process. In this example, the temperature before and after the intermediate image forming process is 25 ° C. for both the image forming area and the blank area.
The intermediate image formed on the
Next, in the transfer section, the
Due to the mechanism described above, a temperature difference is generated between the first region and the second region on the surface of the intermediate transfer member after heating and after transfer. In this example, as shown in FIG. 5, the temperature after the heating process is 66 ° C. in the image forming area (first area) and 91 ° C. in the blank area (second area). Yes. Strictly speaking, the temperature of the first region varies depending on the location even in one intermediate image, but here the average temperature of the entire image is captured.
In order to acquire temperature information, the
In the present specification, an intermediate transfer member region on which an intermediate image is formed is called a “first region”, and an intermediate transfer member region different from the first region including a region sandwiched between adjacent intermediate images is called a “second region”. .
Next, the surface of the intermediate transfer body after each transfer is cooled by the cooling
As shown in FIG. 4D, the cooling
Based on the temperature information detected by the
In this way, the surface of each intermediate transfer member is individually cooled based on the temperature of the intermediate transfer member after being heated by the heating unit. As a result of the cooling process, the surface of the intermediate transfer member has a substantially uniform temperature distribution. The average temperature at that time is cooled so that the temperature of the intermediate transfer member itself does not promote the evaporation of the ink solvent in the next recording cycle, for example, the environmental temperature (initial temperature). In this example, as shown in FIG. 5, the temperature after the cooling process is 25 ° C. in the first recording area and 25 ° C. in the second area.
Instead of acquiring the temperature information by the
As described above, there is a temperature difference between the first area that is the image forming area and the second area that is the blank area after being heated, but after cooling the first area and the second area separately, The temperature difference can be reduced. Therefore, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of transfer defects in the subsequent recording cycles.
<Embodiment 2>
A second embodiment of the present invention will be described. The difference from the first embodiment is the control of the heating process, and the overall configuration is the same as in FIG. In the second embodiment, the intermediate transfer member is not uniformly heated in the heating process as in the first embodiment, but different heating amounts are given to the image forming area (first area) and the blank area (second area). The drive of the
The
The
FIG. 6 is a graph showing the temperature transition of the surface of the intermediate transfer member in the second embodiment. The temperature before and after the intermediate image forming process is 25 ° C. in both the image forming area (first area) and the blank area (second area), as in the first embodiment. After the heating process, both the first region and the second region are 66 ° C. In the first embodiment, since the first region and the second region are uniformly heated, a temperature difference occurs after the heating. In contrast, in the second embodiment, the first region and the second region are individually heated to give different heating amounts, so that the temperature difference between the two is reduced after the heating process. The temperature difference remains small after the subsequent transfer process, and both the first region and the second region are 62 ° C. In the cooling process, the first region and the second region are cooled with a uniform cooling amount. As a result of uniform cooling, both the first region and the second region return to 25 ° C.
In each of the embodiments described above, the
