Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a fuel cell.
A fuel cell includes a membrane electrode assembly (hereinafter also referred to as “MEA”) in which electrodes are joined to both surfaces of an electrolyte membrane, a gas diffusion layer laminated so as to sandwich both sides of the MEA, A reaction gas flow path for supplying the reaction gas to the MEA and discharging exhaust gas (unreacted gas) to the outside is provided.
Conventionally, as a reaction gas channel, a primary channel for supplying a reaction gas from the outside to the gas diffusion layer and a secondary channel for discharging the exhaust gas to the outside are arranged independently of each other. A flow path is known (for example, Patent Document 1). The reaction gas flow path is closed at the end of the primary flow path. In addition, the reaction gas flow path has a secondary flow path so as to sandwich the primary flow path in the surface direction of the member in which the reaction gas flow path is formed.
In such a fuel cell having a reaction gas flow path, since the end of the primary flow path is closed, most of the reaction gas flowing through the primary flow path can be allowed to flow into the gas diffusion layer. Therefore, since the amount of the reaction gas discharged from the secondary flow path to the outside without flowing into the gas diffusion layer can be reduced, improvement in power generation efficiency can be expected.
Here, water is generated by an electrochemical reaction on the cathode side of the fuel cell. A part of the water generated on the cathode side moves (diffuses) in the electrolyte membrane and flows into the anode side. It is necessary to move the water present in the primary flow path to the secondary flow path through the gas diffusion layer in order to discharge the water to the outside. However, conventionally, there has been a case where water does not move well from the primary flow path to the secondary flow path. In this case, the water in the primary channel moves downstream along the flow of the reaction gas, and a large amount of water may stay on the downstream side of the primary channel. If a large amount of water stays on the downstream side of the primary flow path, the flow of reactive gas to the downstream side of the primary flow path is hindered, resulting in variations in the amount of reactive gas supplied to the electrode, which may reduce power generation efficiency. It was. In addition, depending on the installation state of the fuel cell, the water distribution in the gas diffusion layer may vary. In particular, in the installation state of the fuel cell, when the secondary flow path is disposed above and below the primary flow path, the dispersion of water distribution in the gas diffusion layer may become remarkable due to the influence of gravity. When the distribution of water existing in the gas diffusion layer varies, the amount of reaction gas supplied to the electrode varies, and the power generation efficiency may decrease.
Therefore, the present invention has been made in view of such problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a technique for reducing the possibility of variations in the amount of reaction gas supplied to an electrode in a fuel cell. .
SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is to solve at least a part of the problems described above, and the invention can be implemented as the following forms or application examples.
[Application Example 1] A fuel cell,
A power generation module comprising a membrane electrode assembly including an electrolyte membrane and electrodes laminated on both surfaces of the electrolyte membrane; and first and second gas diffusion layers laminated on both surfaces of the membrane electrode assembly;
A first separator further laminated on the first gas diffusion layer side of the power generation module,
Of the two surfaces of the first separator, on the surface facing the first gas diffusion layer, in the installed state of the fuel cell,
A concave primary flow path extending in a substantially horizontal direction with the downstream side closed, and a primary flow path through which the first reaction gas supplied from the outside flows.
The first reaction gas introduced through the first gas diffusion layer is a concave secondary flow path that is closed on the upstream side, extends in a substantially horizontal direction, and is positioned above and below the primary flow path, respectively. A secondary flow path for discharging gas to the outside,
A convex flow path wall portion disposed between the primary flow path and the secondary flow path and partitioning the primary flow path and the secondary flow path in the surface direction;
The first gas diffusion layer overlaps with an upper flow path wall portion that is the flow path wall portion provided on the upper side of the primary flow path when viewed along the stacking direction of each component of the power generation module. An upper region which is a region, and a lower region which is a region overlapping with a lower flow channel wall which is the flow channel wall provided on the lower side of the primary flow channel,
The fuel cell, wherein the upper region and the lower region are configured so that at least a part of at least one of gas diffusibility and hydrophilicity is different at least in part.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 1, the upper region and the lower region of the first gas diffusion layer that passes when the reaction gas flows from the primary flow channel to the secondary flow channel sandwiching the upper and lower sides of the primary flow channel, It is comprised so that at least one grade of a diffusibility and hydrophilicity may differ. This can reduce the possibility of variations in the amount of reaction gas supplied to the electrodes. Here, in the present specification, “gas diffusibility” means that in a gas permeable member such as a porous member, gas flowing in from one side flows out from the other side through the inside. This is a degree representing the ease of gas movement from one side to the other side.
[Application Example 2] The fuel cell according to Application Example 1,
At least a part of the upper region has a higher hydrophilicity than the lower region.
In the lower region, the direction in which gravity is applied and the flow of the reactive gas are in the same direction (downward direction of gravity), so that water that connects the primary flow path and the secondary flow path (also referred to as “water path”) is likely to occur. When the water path is generated, water can be easily moved from the primary flow path to the secondary flow path located below the primary flow path using the differential pressure between the primary flow path and the secondary flow path. On the other hand, the upper region is different in the direction in which gravity is applied (downward direction of gravity) and the flow of reactive gas (upward direction of gravity), so the water path from the primary channel to the secondary channel located above the primary channel. Is difficult to generate. Therefore, it is necessary to move water using the flow of the reaction gas. According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 2, since at least a part of the upper region has a higher degree of hydrophilicity than the lower region, generation of a water path can be promoted also in the upper region. Thereby, water can be easily moved from the primary flow path to the secondary flow path located above the primary flow path using the differential pressure between the primary flow path and the secondary flow path. Thereby, since possibility that water will stay in a primary flow path can be reduced, possibility that dispersion | variation will arise in the quantity of the reactive gas supplied to an electrode can be reduced.
[Application Example 3] The fuel cell according to Application Example 1,
At least a part of the upper region has a higher gas diffusibility than the lower region.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 3, since at least a part of the upper region has higher gas diffusibility than the lower region, more reactive gas can be circulated from the primary flow path to the upper region. Thereby, the water which exists in a primary flow path (especially upper part in a primary flow path) with the flow of a reactive gas can be moved to a secondary flow path via an upper area | region. Thereby, since possibility that water will stay in a primary flow path can be reduced, possibility that dispersion | variation will arise in the quantity of the reactive gas supplied to an electrode can be reduced.
[Application Example 4] The fuel cell according to Application Example 1,
At least a part of the lower region has a higher gas diffusibility than the upper region.
In the lower region, the direction in which gravity is applied and the flow of the reactive gas are in the same direction (downward direction of gravity), so there is a tendency that more water exists than in the upper region. According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 4, since at least a part of the lower region has higher gas diffusibility than the upper region, more of the first reaction gas flowing through the primary flow path is in the lower region. Can be distributed. Therefore, the water in the lower region can be easily moved to the secondary flow path by the flow of the first reaction gas. Thereby, since the amount of water staying in the lower region can be reduced, variation in the distribution of water in the surface direction in the first gas diffusion layer can be reduced. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the possibility of variations in the amount of reaction gas supplied to the electrode.
[Application Example 5] The fuel cell according to Application Example 3 or Application Example 4,
At least a part of any one of the upper region and the lower region has a portion having a higher air permeability than other regions.
In general, the higher the air permeability, the higher the gas diffusibility. According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 5, the first gas diffusion layer is formed by making the air permeability of one of the upper region and the lower region higher than the air permeability of the other region. The variation in the water distribution in the surface direction can be reduced. Here, “air permeability” refers to a plate-like (film-like) fiber base material or porous base material, which gives a predetermined pressure difference between one surface side and the other surface side. Sometimes, the value can be obtained as the amount per unit time of the gas passing through the substrate in the thickness direction.
[Application Example 6] The fuel cell according to Application Example 3,
A fuel cell, wherein a cut is formed in the upper region so as to connect the primary flow path and the secondary flow path.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 6, the degree of gas diffusibility can be easily increased by forming a cut in the first gas diffusion layer.
[Application Example 7] The fuel cell according to Application Example 6,
The notch is formed so as to be positioned on the downstream side in the flow direction of the first reaction gas flowing through the primary flow path and the secondary flow path from the primary flow path side toward the secondary flow path side. A fuel cell.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 7, since the cut is formed along the flow direction of the reaction gas in the primary flow path and the secondary flow path, the flow of the first reaction gas is efficiently used. Thus, the water in the primary channel can be moved to the secondary channel through the notch. Thereby, variation in the distribution of water in the surface direction in the first gas diffusion layer can be reduced, and the possibility of variation in the amount of reaction gas supplied to the electrode can be reduced.
[Application Example 8] The fuel cell according to Application Example 6 or Application Example 7,
The notches are formed at a plurality of locations,
About the flow direction of the first reaction gas flowing through the primary flow path and the secondary flow path,
The fuel cell in which the distance between the adjacent cuts becomes shorter from the upstream side toward the downstream side.
In general, with respect to the flow direction of the reaction gas in the primary flow path and the secondary flow path, the amount of water present on the downstream side tends to be larger in the primary flow path than on the upstream side. According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 9, since the distance between adjacent cuts becomes shorter toward the downstream side, in the region where more water is present, the distance from the primary flow path through the cut is increased. More water can be moved to the next flow path. Thereby, since possibility that water will retain in a primary channel can be reduced more, the quantity of reaction gas supplied to an electrode can be made more uniform.
[Application Example 9] The fuel cell according to Application Example 8,
A fuel cell in which the width of the cut increases as it goes from the upstream side to the downstream side.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 9, more water present on the downstream side of the primary flow path can be moved from the primary flow path to the secondary flow path through the cut. Thereby, since possibility that water will retain in a primary channel can be reduced more, the quantity of reaction gas supplied to an electrode can be made more uniform.
[Application Example 10] The fuel cell according to any one of Application Example 1, Application Example 3, and Application Example 4,
Either one of the upper channel wall and the lower channel wall has a narrow portion having a smaller width than the other channel wall.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 10, by reducing the width of the flow path wall portion of the first separator, the gas diffusibility of the first gas diffusion layer overlapping the flow path wall portion having a reduced width is achieved. The degree can be easily increased.
[Application Example 11] The fuel cell according to Application Example 10,
The width of the narrow portion monotonously decreases in the flow direction of the first reactive gas flowing through the primary flow path and the secondary flow path from the upstream side toward the downstream side.
According to the fuel cell described in the application example 11, the degree of gas diffusivity is increased toward the downstream side of the primary flow path and the first gas diffusion layer where more water is present, thereby existing on the downstream side. More water can be easily moved from the primary channel to the secondary channel. As a result, the flow of the first reactive gas can be maintained satisfactorily, and the possibility of variations in the amount of reactive gas supplied to the electrode can be reduced.
[Application Example 12] The fuel cell according to any one of Application Example 1, Application Example 3, and Application Example 4,
Either one of the upper region and the lower region has a thick portion that is thicker than the other region.
According to the fuel cell described in Application Example 12, the degree of gas diffusibility can be easily increased by increasing the thickness of the first gas diffusion layer.

FIG. 5 is a diagram for explaining the effect of the first embodiment. FIG. 5A is a diagram showing the
As shown in FIG. 5A, in the installed state of the
Further, since the
For easier understanding, the movement of the water GW will be described with reference to FIG. Since the

FIG. 6 is a view for explaining a
The anode
As described above, in the

A-2. Second embodiment:
FIG. 7 is a view for explaining the
As shown in FIG. 7A, the anode
Since the
As described above, similarly to the first embodiment, the
In the

FIG. 8 is a view for explaining the

As described above, by forming the

A-3-1. Modification of the third embodiment:
FIG. 9 is a diagram for explaining a modification of the third embodiment. FIG. 9A is a view for explaining a first modification of the third embodiment. FIG. 9B is a view for explaining a second modification of the third embodiment. FIG. 9A is a diagram schematically showing the configuration of the anode gas diffusion layer 24b1 of the first modification, and corresponds to FIG. 8B. FIG. 9B is a diagram schematically showing the configuration of the anode gas diffusion layer 24b2 according to the second modification, and corresponds to FIG. 8B. 9A and 9B illustrate the
In the anode gas diffusion layer 24b1 of the third embodiment, the

A-4. Fourth embodiment:
The fourth embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 10 is a view for explaining the
As shown in FIG. 10, the upper flow path wall portion 35fc is smaller in width than the lower flow
As described above, since the

A-5. Example 5:
A
As shown in FIG. 13, the lower flow path wall portion 35ge is smaller in width than the upper flow
However, as described above, in the
FIG. 15 is a diagram for explaining a preferable method of setting the width Tf and the width Tg. FIG. 15A shows a
As shown in FIG. 15B, when the flow rate of the reaction gas supplied to the
The retention of water inside the anode
Width Tf: Width Tg = Pg: Pf (1)
Here, Pf is a pressure loss in the
For example, when Pf: Pg = 1: 2, the width Tf and the width Tg of the
As described above, the width Tf and the width Tg are determined by the ratio of the pressure loss between the

A-6. Sixth and seventh embodiments:
FIG. 16 is a diagram for explaining the
As shown in FIG. 16A, the anode gas diffusion layer 24f1 of the sixth embodiment is configured such that the
As described above, the
As shown in FIG. 16B, the anode gas diffusion layer 24g1 of the seventh embodiment has a
By making the

A-7. Example 8:
FIG. 17 is a view for explaining a
As shown in FIG. 17A, the
As shown in FIG. 17B, an example of a method for manufacturing the
