Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a photocatalyst synthesis method, a photocatalyst electrode, a hydrogen generator using the photocatalyst electrode, and a method of generating hydrogen by the hydrogen generator.
From the viewpoint of global energy and environmental problems, the development of science and technology that can use solar energy is eagerly desired. Furthermore, technology that converts solar energy into chemical energy, that is, a fuel that uses solar energy, has attracted attention. As a method for producing such a solar fuel, there is decomposition of water using a photocatalytic electrode having semiconductor characteristics.
The material of the photocatalytic electrode is very limited. For example, TiO 2 (see Non-Patent Document 1), SrTiO 3 (Strontium Titanate) (see Non-Patent Documents 2 to 4), KTaO 3 (Non-Patent Document 5). And WO 3 (see Non-Patent Document 6), Fe 2 O 3 (see Non-Patent Document 7), and the like.
However, in the case of performing the decomposition of water using a photocatalyst electrode by TiO 2 can not band gap of TiO 2 is only utilized UV in order to be 3.0 eV, that when utilizing solar as a light source The utilization efficiency is extremely low. In addition, the application of an external bias is essential. Further, when the decomposition of water using a photocatalyst electrode according SrTiO 3 or KTaO 3, although not requiring application of an external bias, also only ultraviolet light is utilized for the band gap of SrTiO 3 or KTaO 3 is wide I can't.
Further, when the decomposition of water using a photocatalyst electrode by WO 3 and Fe 2 O 3, which may be a band gap of WO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 is using visible light to a relatively narrow, Application of an external bias is essential.
All of these photocatalytic electrode materials exhibit n-type semiconductor characteristics. That is, in the decomposition of water, oxygen is generated on the surface of these photocatalytic electrodes, and hydrogen is generated on the surface of the counter electrode such as platinum.
In contrast, in a photocatalytic electrode made of a material exhibiting p-type semiconductor characteristics, hydrogen is produced on the surface of the photocatalytic electrode and oxygen is produced on the counter electrode. A photocatalyst electrode exhibiting p-type semiconductor characteristics is required in order to efficiently decompose water by using such characteristics in combination with, for example, a photocatalyst electrode exhibiting n-type semiconductor characteristics. The development of this photocatalytic electrode exhibiting p-type semiconductor characteristics is regarded as a very important issue not only in the field of water decomposition but also in the fields of electronics, optoelectronics, solar cells and the like.
CaFe 2 O 4 has been reported as a photocatalytic electrode material exhibiting p-type semiconductor characteristics (see Non-Patent Document 8), but there are almost no other materials.
However, even when a photocatalytic electrode made of CaFe 2 O 4 is used, it is essential to apply an external bias.
By the way, the metal sulfide powder shows high activity in the hydrogen generation reaction in the presence of a sacrificial reagent as a photocatalyst, regardless of whether it exhibits p-type or n-type semiconductor characteristics. Although it is said that water cannot be decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen, there is a possibility that it can be applied to water decomposition by forming a wet battery (see Non-Patent Document 9).
In order to use a metal sulfide photocatalyst for water decomposition, it is essential that the metal sulfide photocatalyst electrode has p-type semiconductor characteristics. This is because in the photocatalytic electrode having p-type semiconductor characteristics, hydrogen is generated during the decomposition of water and oxygen is generated at the counter electrode. In contrast, in a photocatalytic electrode made of a metal sulfide having n-type semiconductor characteristics, self-corrosion occurs and water cannot be oxidized to generate oxygen, so that water cannot be decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen. .
The present inventors have so far reported a metal sulfide exhibiting high activity in a hydrogen generation reaction under irradiation of visible light (see Non-Patent Document 10), and among them, a composite having a chalcopyrite structure. It has been found that CuGaS 2 , which is a metal sulfide, exhibits p-type semiconductor characteristics, and further, the photoelectrochemical characteristics are improved by partially substituting Ag for Cu (Non-patent Document 11). reference.).
On the other hand, the composite metal sulfide A I 2 —Zn—A IV —S 4 (A I = Cu, Ag; A IV = Ge, Sn) (see Non-Patent Document 12) having a stannite structure is a chalcopyrite structure. Since this compound group does not contain In as a constituent element, it has an interest as a novel optical functional material. For example, Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 has attracted attention as a material for solar cells (see Patent Document 1).
As described above, in order to decompose water, hydrogen can be generated under the application of an external bias of less than 1.23 V, which is the theoretical decomposition voltage of water, and under visible light irradiation. There is a need for a photocatalytic electrode having p-type semiconductor properties.
However, CuGaS 2 alone and its partially substituted Ag are not sufficient from the viewpoint of effectively using light in all wavelengths of visible light. Specifically, light in the long wavelength region is effectively used. It cannot be said that it is available.
In addition, A I 2 —Zn—Sn—S 4 (A I = Cu) has a certain high activity in the hydrogen generation reaction, but is required to have a higher activity.

According to the photocatalyst electrode of the present invention, since the photocatalyst electrode has a photocatalyst composed of a composite metal sulfide having a specific composition, it exhibits p-type semiconductor characteristics and is applied as an electrode for water decomposition. Thus, hydrogen can be generated on the photocatalytic electrode.
According to the hydrogen generator of the present invention, since the photocatalyst electrode is used, application of an external bias of less than 1.23 V that is the theoretical decomposition voltage of water under irradiation of light to the photocatalyst of the photocatalyst electrode. Thus, water can be decomposed to generate hydrogen on the photocatalytic electrode surface.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be specifically described.
The photocatalytic electrode of the present invention is also referred to as a photocatalyst (hereinafter referred to as “specific photocatalyst”) made of a composite metal sulfide represented by the above composition formula (1) (hereinafter also referred to as “specific composite metal sulfide”). ) And exhibit p-type semiconductor characteristics, that is, a cathode photocurrent is observed.
In the composition formula (1), x is 0.5 ≦ x ≦ 1, and y is 5 ≦ y ≦ 30.
When x is in the above range, the photocatalytic electrode exhibits excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics. On the other hand, when x is less than 0.5, the photocatalytic electrode may not exhibit sufficient p-type semiconductor characteristics.
In addition, when y is in the above range, the photocatalytic electrode exhibits excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics. Although this reason is not certain, it is presumed that the formation of impurities and defects is suppressed as compared with the composite metal sulfide having a stoichiometric ratio of y = 0. On the other hand, when y is less than 5, the photocatalyst electrode contains a large amount of impurities and defects, and may not be suitable for practical use without exhibiting excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics. On the other hand, when y is larger than 30, ZnS and GeS 2 as raw materials may not be completely dissolved and remain in the synthesis of the composite metal sulfide.
As the specific composite metal sulfide, those satisfying 0.7 ≦ x ≦ 0.8 and 10 ≦ y ≦ 20 are preferable because they exhibit excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics, and in particular, x = 0. 75 and y = 15 are preferred.
As such a photocatalytic electrode having a specific photocatalyst by a specific composite metal sulfide, the larger the value of x, that is, the larger the Cu content, the larger the cathode photocurrent is obtained, that is, the better It shows p-type semiconductor characteristics.
[Method of synthesizing photocatalyst]
The specific composite metal sulfide constituting the specific photocatalyst forming such a photocatalyst electrode is Cu 2 S, Ag 2 S, ZnS, and GeS 2 in a molar ratio of x: (1-x): { (100 + y) / 100}: synthesized by a so-called solid-phase method in which the mixture is mixed and fired so as to have a ratio of {(100 + y) / 100}.
However, in the above ratio, x is 0.5 ≦ x ≦ 1, and y is 5 ≦ y ≦ 30.

The baking treatment is performed in an atmosphere such as a vacuum atmosphere or an inert gas atmosphere.
The temperature of the baking treatment is preferably 400 to 1000 ° C., for example, and the time of the baking treatment is preferably 5 to 15 hours, for example.

Certain composite metal sulfides were synthesized by the solid phase method.
Specifically, Cu 2 S (purity 99%: manufactured by High Purity Chemical Laboratory), Ag 2 S (purity 99.9%: manufactured by Rare Metallic), ZnS (purity 99.9%: high purity chemical research) And GeS 2 (purity 99.9%: manufactured by High Purity Chemical Laboratory Co., Ltd.), respectively, x: (1-x): {(100 + y 1 ) / 100}: {(100 + y 2 ) / 100 } (The combinations of x, y 1 and y 2 are in accordance with Table 1.) and these were mixed in an agate mortar. Next, this mixture is vacuum sealed in a quartz ampule, and calcined at 550 ° C. for 10 hours (x = 1, y = 15 at 650 ° C. for 10 hours), thereby producing a powdery product [a] to [G], [p] to [t] were obtained.

Since it shifted to the low angle side continuously, formation of the solid solution in which Cu and Ag were made into a uniform solid phase was confirmed.
Hereinafter, the powder products [a] to [g] and [p] to [t] are referred to as photocatalysts [a] to [g] and [p] to [t].

The diffuse reflection spectrum was measured using “UbestV-570” (manufactured by Jasco). The results are shown in FIG. In FIG. 4, (p) to (r) and (a) to (e) indicate diffuse reflection spectra for the photocatalysts [p] to [r] and [a] to [e], respectively.
From the results of FIG. 4, the stoichiometric ratio ((y 1 , y 2 ) = (0, 0)), Zn only excess ((y 1 , y 2 ) = (15, 0)) or Ge only excess ((y In the photocatalyst [p] to [r] synthesized by ( 1 , y 2 ) = (0, 15)), absorption due to impurities and defects was confirmed at a wavelength of 600 to 900 nm. That is, it seems that they do not show excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics. On the other hand, in the photocatalysts [a] to [e] synthesized with both Zn and Ge in excess ((y 1 , y 2 ) = (5, 5) to (30, 30)), they are caused by impurities and defects. Since there is no absorption and a single absorption edge is observed, it is considered that excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics are exhibited. Then, Zn and Ge were synthesized with both Zn and Ge in excess of 15% from the stoichiometric ratio ((y 1 , y 2 ) = (15, 15) to (30, 30)). In the photocatalysts [c] to [e], a single absorption edge with a very sharp rising is observed, and thus it is considered that the p-type semiconductor characteristics are extremely excellent.

<Change in semiconductor characteristics depending on Zn / Ge content>
(Y 1 , y 2 ) = (0, 0), (15, 0), (0, 15), (5, 5), (10, 10), (15, 15), (20, 20), The hydrogen generators [p] to [r] and [a] to [e], which are (30, 30), were used, respectively, and CV measurement was performed at a sweep rate of 20 mV / s while irradiating visible light. Specifically, it started from 0V while repeating light on and light off, swept to 0.4V on the noble side, then swept to -1V on the base side, and again swept to 0V on the noble side. The results are shown in FIG. 5 and FIG.
5 and 6, (p) to (r) and (a) to (e) are CV curves for the hydrogen generators [p] to [r] and [a] to [e], respectively. Indicates.
From the results of FIG. 5 and FIG. 6, in the photocatalyst [c] synthesized with both Zn and Ge in excess of 15% or more than the stoichiometric ratio ((y 1 , y 2 ) = (15, 15)) It was confirmed that a large cathode photocurrent was obtained, and it was revealed that the photocatalyst [c] exhibits the most excellent p-type semiconductor characteristics.
<Change in semiconductor characteristics depending on Cu / Ag content>
Hydrogen generators [s], [t], [f] where (y 1 , y 2 ) = (15, 15) and x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 , [C] and [g] were used, and CV measurement was performed at a sweep rate of 20 mV / s while irradiating visible light. The results are shown in FIG.
In FIG. 7, (s), (t), (f), (c), and (g) are the hydrogen generators [s], [t], [f], [c], [g], respectively. The CV curve about] is shown.
From the result of FIG. 7, in the hydrogen generator [g] related to x = 1, that is, the photocatalyst [g] containing no Ag, a large cathode photocurrent rising from around +0.3 V and a large anode darkness in the noble region. An electric current was observed, and it was revealed that the photocatalyst [g] in the hydrogen generator [g] has p-type semiconductor characteristics. This anode dark current is believed to be due to an auto-oxidation reaction.
In addition, x = 0.5, 0.75, that is, the photocatalysts [f] and [c] containing a large amount of Cu, a sufficiently large cathode photocurrent was observed. It became clear that semiconductor characteristics were exhibited, and that, as the Cu content increased, a larger cathode photocurrent was obtained, that is, better p-type semiconductor characteristics were obtained. Furthermore, in these solid solutions containing both Cu and Ag, the anode dark current is suppressed as compared with those not containing Ag. Therefore, the solid solution containing both Cu and Ag does not contain Ag. It became clear that it was more stable against auto-oxidation than those.
On the other hand, in the case of x = 0, that is, a photocatalyst [s] containing no Cu, both the cathode photocurrent and the anode photocurrent are observed, and it becomes clear that the photocatalyst [s] exhibits intrinsic semiconductor characteristics. It was.
Moreover, in the case of x = 0.25, that is, a photocatalyst [t] containing Cu but having a very small amount, since a slight anode photocurrent and cathode photocurrent were obtained, sufficient p-type semiconductor characteristics were obtained. Was found not to show.
<Wavelength dependence of cathode photocurrent>
(Y 1 , y 2 ) = (15, 15) and x = 0.75 for the hydrogen generator [c], 400 nm, 420 nm, 440 nm, 500 nm, 520 nm, 540 nm, 560 nm, 580 nm, 600 nm, respectively. The constant potential electrolysis measurement (A1) was performed while irradiating visible light through a cut-off filter that blocks light in the wavelength range of 620 nm and 640 nm and below and applying a potential difference of −1.0 V to the reference electrode. . Moreover, the constant potential electrolysis measurement (A2) was performed in a state where no light was irradiated. Then, a value obtained by subtracting the cathode current value measured in (A2) from the cathode current value measured in (A1) was calculated. The results are shown in FIG. In FIG. 8, the diffuse reflection spectrum for the photocatalyst [c] is shown together.
From the results shown in FIG. 8, the wavelength at which the cathode photocurrent is observed and the rise of the peak of the diffuse reflection spectrum almost coincide with each other, and thus it is clear that the obtained cathode photocurrent is due to band gap excitation. .
<Change in cathode photoelectric flow rate with respect to light irradiation time>
Using a photocatalyst [c] in which (y 1 , y 2 ) = (15, 15) and x = 0.75, a potential difference of −1 V is given to the reference electrode over 10 hours and visible While irradiating with light (light irradiation area 2.0 cm 2 ), constant potential electrolysis was measured and the amount of hydrogen produced was measured. The amount of hydrogen produced was quantified using an on-line gas chromatograph.
The amount of hydrogen produced was 4.2 μmol in 10 hours.
Moreover, the constant potential electrolysis measurement was performed in a state where no light was irradiated.
The result of the constant potential electrolysis measurement is shown in FIG. In FIG. 9, c (light on) is the result of constant potential electrolysis measured while irradiating with visible light, and c (light off) is the result of constant potential electrolysis measured with no light irradiated. .
From the result of FIG. 9, it was confirmed that the cathode photocurrent can be obtained relatively stably over a long period of time. Moreover, although it was a value lower than the theoretical value (8.3 μmol), since it was confirmed that hydrogen was produced, it was found that the obtained cathode photocurrent was due to a reduction reaction of water.
<Cathode photoelectric flow rate under application of external bias smaller than the theoretical decomposition voltage of water>
(Y 1 , y 2 ) = (15,15), and x = 0.75, using a bipolar hydrogen generator [c-2] with a photocatalyst [c], and between the counter electrode, Constant potential electrolysis was performed while applying an external bias of −1.1 V and irradiating visible light (light irradiation area: 1.7 cm 2 ). The results are shown in FIG.
From the result of FIG. 10, it was confirmed that the cathode photocurrent can be obtained relatively stably under the application condition of the external bias smaller than the theoretical decomposition voltage of water (1.23 V). From this, it became clear that the hydrogen generator [c-2] by this photocatalyst [c] functions as a light energy conversion system for water decomposition.
