Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a high-efficiency and high-definition liquid crystal display using a phosphor composed of quantum dots.
A liquid crystal display is a display device in which a liquid crystal composition is used for display. The liquid crystal display is used as a display device in various devices, particularly as an information display device and an image display device.
The liquid crystal display displays an image by transmitting and blocking light for each region based on application of a voltage. Therefore, external light is required to display an image on the liquid crystal display. As a light source for that purpose, a backlight provided on the back surface of the liquid crystal display is used. Conventionally, a cold cathode tube is used for the backlight. Recently, LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are sometimes used instead of cold-cathode tubes for reasons such as long life and good color development.
By the way, in recent years, nano-sized phosphors using quantum dots have been commercialized mainly by foreign venture companies.
A quantum dot is a conductive crystal of several tens of nm or less formed to confine electrons in a minute space. Electrons confined in quantum dots can only exist as standing waves of discrete wavelengths. Therefore, the energy that the electrons can take becomes discrete.
As quantum dots emit and absorb photons, the energy level of electrons changes. In addition, the energy of photons emitted and absorbed by the quantum dot changes depending on the crystal size of the quantum dot (quantum size effect). Accordingly, various fluorescent color quantum dots can be manufactured. A phosphor composed of quantum dots is used as a fluorescent marker in biotechnology, for example.
(例えば特許文献1,特許文献2参照) As a method for synthesizing such a quantum dot, for example, while continuously supplying a particle-forming precursor-containing solution inside a reactor arranged in a heating zone, the reaction is performed by rapidly heating to a reaction start temperature. A method of quenching is known. (For example, see Patent Document 1 and Patent Document 2)
Most of the LEDs for illumination, including those for backlights, are made fluorescent by covering a blue LED with a phosphor, and the fluorescence is emitted.
Conventionally, several to several tens of μm-doped luminescent particles mainly composed of an oxide have been used as phosphors. Since the particle diameter of the phosphor is longer than the wavelength of light, there is a problem that light is easily scattered on the particle surface and energy loss occurs. There is also a problem that the part contributing to the light wavelength conversion is only the phosphor surface, and the light conversion is inefficient with respect to the volume of the phosphor. In addition, the doped luminescent particles have a problem that the emission wavelength, emission intensity, and temperature dependence are substantially fixed depending on the type of dopant (coloring ions, atoms). In addition, there is a problem that the types of materials that can obtain practical emission intensity are limited.
In addition, since the excitation wavelength and the fluorescence wavelength are in a one-to-one correspondence, there is a problem that the phosphors that can be used at one excitation wavelength are limited and the degree of freedom in color tone is low. For example, a pseudo white LED based on a combination of a blue LED and a phosphor that fluoresces yellow is known, and light emitted from the pseudo white LED is recognized as white by the naked eye. However, since the light of only two wavelengths of blue and yellow is actually included, the light of the pseudo white LED has low color rendering properties.
As described above, the conventional phosphor has many problems as an optical material. As a result, conventional phosphors cause the following problems with respect to liquid crystal displays.
Since the conversion efficiency between excitation light and fluorescence in the phosphor and the efficiency of taking out the fluorescence are poor, the loss of energy increases. Further, the spectral characteristics of the color filter of the liquid crystal display do not match the wavelength of the fluorescence, and further energy loss occurs. Therefore, the power consumption of the liquid crystal display increases.
In addition, since the degree of freedom of the fluorescent color tone is low, there is a limit to the presentation of images displayed on the liquid crystal display. On the other hand, when a plurality of color LEDs are mounted to increase the color tone, the structure of the liquid crystal display becomes complicated, leading to an increase in the size of the liquid crystal display.
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described circumstances, and an object thereof is to provide a high-efficiency and high-definition liquid crystal display using a phosphor made of quantum dots.
(1) A liquid crystal display according to the present invention includes a liquid crystal panel provided with a color filter, a backlight using an LED as a light source, and irradiating the liquid crystal panel with light from the back side of the liquid crystal panel, and the backlight irradiates. A phosphor layer provided on the light path and including a phosphor made of quantum dots.
Here, the liquid crystal display according to the present invention includes an independent display device provided with a terminal for inputting a video signal, and a liquid crystal display that is incorporated in an electronic device or the like and functions as a display screen of the electronic device.
In addition, the color filter in the present invention is laminated as a part of the liquid crystal panel in order to display a color image on the liquid crystal panel. In the color filter, a plurality of types of regions that transmit light of different wavelengths are arranged on a plane.
In addition, the phosphor composed of quantum dots in the present invention is a fine particle having a maximum particle diameter of 50 nm or less, and absorbs photons of a specific wavelength and emits photons of different wavelengths.
The phosphor layer in the present invention is a layer in which the phosphor is sealed with a sealant that transmits at least part of light. The film thickness of the phosphor layer is 10 μm or less.
Light emitted from the backlight is incident on the phosphor layer. The light incident on the phosphor layer excites electrons inside the phosphor. When the electrons return to the ground state, the phosphor emits light having a wavelength unique to the phosphor. This phenomenon is called fluorescence. Accordingly, the wavelength of the light transmitted through the phosphor layer is changed. Part of the light transmitted through the phosphor layer is emitted from the display surface of the liquid crystal display. Thereby, an image is displayed on the liquid crystal display.
By using quantum dots, phosphors of various fluorescent colors can be manufactured at one excitation wavelength. The spectrum of light transmitted from the phosphor layer changes depending on the balance of the phosphors included in the phosphor layer. Therefore, the color tone of the liquid crystal display can be easily adjusted.
Since the spectrum of the light transmitted from the phosphor layer is adjusted, the wavelength of the light can be matched with the spectral characteristics of the color filter. Thereby, the liquid crystal display has high definition. At the same time, energy loss in the color filter is reduced, and the energy efficiency of the liquid crystal display is increased.
Since the maximum particle diameter of the phosphor composed of quantum dots is 50 nm or less, light scattering on the particle surface is reduced. In addition, the phosphor layer can contain a large number of phosphors per unit volume. By adjusting the concentration of the phosphor to an optimum value, the conversion efficiency in the phosphor layer is increased, and the energy efficiency of the liquid crystal display is further increased. Further, since the phosphor layer is realized as a thin film having a thickness of 10 μm or less, the degree of freedom in the structure of the liquid crystal display is increased.
(2) The liquid crystal display according to the present invention may be one in which a plurality of phosphor layers having different fluorescence wavelengths are laminated on the backlight.
By laminating the phosphor layer on the backlight, the backlight can output light of a plurality of wavelengths using a single color LED as a light source. Therefore, the above-described backlight with a high color rendering property is realized.
(3) The liquid crystal display according to the present invention may be one in which a plurality of phosphor layers having different fluorescence wavelengths are laminated on the liquid crystal panel.
By laminating the phosphor layer on the liquid crystal panel, the liquid crystal panel can display a high-definition image by a backlight using a single color LED as a light source.
(4) In the liquid crystal display according to the present invention, the phosphor layer may include a plurality of phosphors having different fluorescent colors inside.
For example, the phosphor layer contains two kinds of phosphors having different fluorescent colors inside. As the phosphor, the phosphors having red and green fluorescent colors are selected. When the blue LED is irradiated as a backlight, the light transmitted through the phosphor layer has a spectrum having peaks in red and green. Blue is created by part of the light from the blue LED passing through the phosphor layer as it is. Thereby, three colors of light are efficiently produced.
(5) A liquid crystal display according to the present invention includes a liquid crystal panel provided with a fluorescent filter coated with a plurality of phosphor layers containing a phosphor composed of quantum dots, and an LED as a light source, and the back surface of the liquid crystal panel. And a backlight that irradiates the liquid crystal panel with light from the side.
Here, the fluorescent filter in the present invention can be used in place of the color filter of the conventional liquid crystal panel. The fluorescent filter is one in which the above phosphor is used instead of the colorant in the conventional color filter.
In the conventional color filter, about 70% of the light is lost and mainly heat. That is, only about 30% of the incident light contributed to the brightness of the liquid crystal display. Moreover, in the conventional liquid crystal display, since the light by fluorescence was further passed through the color filter, multiple energy losses occurred. The use of a fluorescent filter in the liquid crystal display eliminates the need for a color filter. Thereby, the energy efficiency of the liquid crystal display is further increased.
(6) In the liquid crystal display according to the present invention, the fluorescent filter is divided into one of a first region, a second region, and a third region corresponding to the sub-pixels of the liquid crystal panel. In the first region and the second region, a transmissive layer that transmits at least part of light is coated with the phosphor layer containing the phosphors of different fluorescent colors, and the third region. Then, the transmission layer may not be coated with the phosphor layer.
Here, the sub-pixel in the present invention is a region corresponding to one of RGB and other colors for high definition and high color rendering in the liquid crystal panel, and constitutes a pixel of the liquid crystal panel. is there.
For example, the first region is coated with the phosphor layer containing the phosphor having a fluorescent color of red. The second region is coated with the phosphor layer containing the phosphor having a fluorescent color of green. If the LED is a blue LED, red, green, and blue light are output from the first region, the second region, and the third region, respectively. Therefore, a high-definition liquid crystal display is realized using only one color LED as a light source.
(7) In the liquid crystal display according to the present invention, the LED may be a blue LED, a purple LED, or an LED having a shorter wavelength of light to be emitted than the blue LED and the purple LED.
By adopting the above configuration, a highly efficient and high-definition liquid crystal display is realized. Since such a liquid crystal display can use only one color LED as a light source, it has a high degree of freedom in structure and is thin. Further, the color tone is freely adjusted by the balance of the phosphors.
Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings as appropriate. Note that the embodiment described below is merely an example of the present invention, and it is needless to say that the embodiment of the present invention can be changed as appropriate without departing from the gist of the present invention.

The particle structure of the nanophosphor is described. The nanophosphor has a core as a light emitting part coated with a shell as a protective film. For example, CdSe can be used for the core and ZnS can be used for the shell. Quantum yield is improved by coating the surface defects of the CdSe particles with ZnS having a large band gap. Further, the nanophosphor may be one in which the core is doubly coated with the first shell and the second shell. CdSe can be used for the core, ZnSe for the first shell, and ZnS for the second shell. A ZnSe layer having an intermediate lattice constant between them is epitaxially sandwiched at the interface between CdSe and ZnS. Distortion due to lattice mismatch between CdSe and ZnS is relaxed by ZnS using zinc and selenium as raw materials. Thereby, the physical properties of the nanophosphor are improved.
The film-type nanophosphor described above is manufactured by, for example, the method described in the example of Patent Document 2. For example, a nanophosphor having a CdSe / ZnS structure can be obtained by the following method. First, a solution prepared by adding 165 μl of octylamine and 26.6 mg of cadmium acetate to 5 ml of octadecene and a solution prepared by dissolving 494 μl of selenium in 25 ml of trioctylphosphine (TOP) are mixed 1: 1. The mixed solution is filled in a syringe pump and passed through a microchannel heated to 275 ° C. As a result, a CdSe fine particle solution (average particle diameter is 3 nm) is obtained as a core fine particle.
Subsequently, a solution in which [(CH3) 2NCSS] 2Zn was dissolved in TOP was filled into a syringe pump, and the mixture was adjusted to 1: 1 (50 vol%: 50 vol%) with respect to the obtained CdSe fine particle solution. The mixed solution is passed through a microchannel having an inner diameter of 0.2 mm that has been heated to 180 ° C. in advance. CdSe is coated with ZnS in the flow path, and a CdSe / ZnS structured nanophosphor is obtained. A high-performance nanophosphor can be continuously obtained by such a manufacturing method using a microreactor. The obtained nanophosphor is purified, adjusted in concentration, and dispersed in a volatile solvent to form a nanophosphor solution.

210] [LCD panel 210]

Subsequently, the operation of the
The light emitted from the LED

The phosphor layer (red) 720 and the phosphor layer (green) 730 are thin films of several μm each made of resin or the like. A nanophosphor is sealed inside the resin. The phosphor layer (red) 720 is sealed with a nanophosphor having a red fluorescence color. The phosphor layer (green) 730 is sealed with a nanophosphor having a green fluorescent color.
