Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a radiation detector for detecting radiation.
As a new generation diagnostic X-ray image detector, a planar X-ray detector using an active matrix has attracted attention. By irradiating the X-ray detector with X-rays, an X-ray image or a real-time X-ray image is output as a digital signal. Since this X-ray detector is a solid-state detector, there are great expectations in terms of image quality performance and stability, and many researches and developments are underway.
As the first application for practical use, it has been developed for the chest or general radiography for collecting still images with a relatively large dose, and has been commercialized in recent years. Commercialization is expected in the near future for applications in the circulatory and gastrointestinal fields that require higher performance and real-time video at 30 frames per second under fluoroscopic dose. For this moving image application, improvement of S / N and real-time processing technology of minute signals are important development items.
This type of X-ray detector can be broadly divided into two methods, a direct method and an indirect method. The direct method is a method in which X-rays are directly converted into a charge signal by a photoconductive film such as a-Se and led to a charge storage capacitor. On the other hand, in the indirect method, X-rays are received by a fluorescent conversion film that is a scintillator layer, and once converted into visible light, the visible light is converted into signal charges by an a-Si photodiode or CCD, and led to a charge storage capacitor. It is a method.
Many of the X-ray detectors currently in practical use adopt the indirect method. In a conventional indirect X-ray detector, an X-ray image transmitted through a human body or the like is incident on the X-ray detector, and the image information is converted into an electrical signal. At this time, X-rays are converted into visible light by the fluorescence conversion film, and the visible light is detected for each pixel formed in a grid pattern on the photoelectric conversion substrate and is output as an electrical signal of two-dimensional image information.
The photoelectric conversion substrate is a thin film transistor (TFT) panel manufacturing process that is similar to the manufacturing process of a liquid crystal display device, and a circuit board in which signal wiring and a thin film transistor are formed on a glass substrate is created. A photodiode for detecting the fluorescence is formed in a lattice pattern for each pixel, and the photodiode is electrically connected to a thin film transistor disposed below.
The pixels are arranged in a grid pattern, and the switching elements of each pixel are connected to a selection line representing a row and a signal line representing a column. These selection lines and signal lines are arranged in a grid pattern and are connected to each pixel arranged in the grid pattern.
A phosphor that converts X-rays into visible light is stacked on the photoelectric conversion substrate.
X-rays incident from the outside are converted into visible light inside the phosphor, and the generated visible light enters the photoelectric conversion substrate. Visible light incident on the photoelectric conversion substrate is converted into electric charge by a photodiode and accumulated in the photodiode or in a capacitor element connected in parallel.
The X-ray image information converted into electric charges is transmitted to the outside through a thin film transistor connected to a photodiode. That is, when the potential of the selection line changes, the thin film transistor connected to the selection line whose potential has changed becomes conductive, and the charge accumulated in the photodiode or the capacitor connected to the thin film transistor in the conductive state Are discharged from the thin film transistor to the outside through the signal line.
As for the potential of the selection line for driving the thin film transistor, the potential of only one selection line is usually changed, so that the thin film transistor inside the pixel corresponding to a specific row is brought into a conductive state. By sequentially changing the selection line for changing the potential, signals from the pixels corresponding to a specific row are discharged to the outside, and the position of the signal line from which the charge is discharged and the selection line whose potential has fluctuated at that time It is possible to calculate the incident position and intensity of X-rays by referring to the position.
The charge signal discharged to the outside of the photoelectric conversion substrate is input to an integrating amplifier circuit connected to each signal line. The charge information input to the integrating amplifier circuit is amplified, converted into a potential signal, and output. The potential signal output from the integrating amplifier circuit is converted into a digital value by an A / D converter, and finally edited as an image signal and output to the outside of the X-ray detector.
By the way, the X-ray detector is mainly intended to image X-rays transmitted through the human body. When a large amount of X-ray irradiation is applied to the human body, there is an adverse effect on health, so X-ray irradiation to the human body can be suppressed to the minimum necessary. Therefore, the intensity of the X-ray incident on the X-ray detector is very weak, and the amount of charge output from the thin film transistor inside the X-ray detector is extremely small. In normal human imaging with X-rays, the amount of charge output from one pixel is 1 pC or less. In particular, when acquiring X-ray images for the purpose of moving image observation, the amount of charge output from each pixel is a very fine signal amount of about 1 fC, and image information is easily degraded by noise signals unrelated to the X-ray image. Resulting in. Therefore, it is inevitable that a lot of noise is included in the output signal when an X-ray image is acquired. Most of the noise is caused by electromagnetic waves emitted from a large number of electronic devices included in the X-ray detector and unnecessary signals transmitted through the signal lines inside the devices.
Noise can be roughly divided into two types called random noise and horizontal noise. Random noise occurs uniformly in the entire X-ray image, and has a feature that it does not have a specific pattern or contour. On the other hand, the horizontal noise is characterized by appearing in a streak in the horizontal direction or the vertical direction. Both noises cause deterioration of the X-ray image.
Although there are two types of noise, laterally drawn noise has a large influence in the X-ray image diagnosis that is finally determined by a human. This is because, when a human sees an image, horizontal noise that causes a clear pattern in the horizontal or vertical direction is more prominent than random noise without a pattern. Therefore, X-ray detectors are strongly required to reduce lateral noise.
It is considered that the cause of the horizontal noise is mainly mixed from the selection line for driving the pixel. This is because, in the operation of the X-ray detector, the image signal from the pixels connected to the same selection line is simultaneously amplified and digitized by the detection circuit, so the noise component from the selection line is connected to the same selection line It will be included in all the image signals from the pixels being processed. From this result, the same noise component is mixed in the pixels in the horizontal direction connected to the same selection line, and the luminance changes due to the noise component mixed in the pixels arranged in the horizontal direction at the same time, and is observed as horizontal noise. Become.
The selection line is connected to a driver circuit for driving the thin film transistor, and the driver circuit sequentially changes the voltage of the connected selection line to drive the connected thin film transistor. Noise generated inside the driver circuit or power line noise for driving the driver circuit is mixed into the selection line and enters the pixel through the capacitance component or switching element of the pixel connected to the selection line. If it is mixed in the output signal, it will be observed as lateral noise.
In order to reduce the horizontal noise, it is effective to reduce the noise generated in the driver circuit or from the power supply line, but there are usually limits due to manufacturing problems and device price problems.
As another method for reducing the horizontal noise, there is a method of extracting only the horizontal noise component from the X-ray image and subtracting the extracted noise component from the original image. In this X-ray detector, a device for extracting horizontal noise is built in, and horizontal noise is detected based on an output value from the device. Specifically, by installing dark pixels that do not react to incident X-rays outside the effective area of the X-ray detector, it becomes possible to detect random noise and lateral noise of the X-ray detector.
。 The dark pixels are installed on both sides of the effective pixels, and both are connected to the same selection line. This is because the pixels connected to the same selection line have the same horizontal noise component, and the output from the dark pixel includes the same horizontal noise component as the effective pixel. Further, since the dark pixel has a structure that does not react to incident X-rays, the influence of incident X-rays can be avoided. For this reason, by using the output from the dark pixel, it is possible to predict the horizontal pulling noise from the image by the incident X-ray and reduce the horizontal pulling noise included in the image (see, for example, Patent Document 1). .
The output from the dark pixel usually includes random noise in addition to the horizontal noise. Random noise is mainly generated in a circuit that amplifies an output from a pixel including a dark pixel and converts it into a digital value. In particular, the random noise generated from the amplifier circuit is large. Therefore, the horizontal noise component from the dark pixel is mixed with the random component in the amplifier circuit and the digital conversion circuit. As a result, the output from the dark pixel is composed of two kinds of noise. It becomes a mixed component.
When there are many random noise components in the output value from the dark pixel, it is difficult to estimate the horizontal noise component, and it is difficult to remove the horizontal noise component from the X-ray image. Usually, the horizontal noise is smaller than the random noise, and in order to sufficiently remove the horizontal noise, it is necessary to remove the horizontal noise component of 10% or less of the random noise component. For this reason, outputs from a large number of dark pixels are detected at the same time, and their values are averaged to create a signal in which the lateral noise component is increased relative to the random noise component.
In a normal method, a plurality of dark pixels connected to one arbitrary selection line are connected to one amplifier circuit for each dark pixel. In this configuration, in order to double the ratio of the horizontal noise component to the random noise component in the output from the dark pixel, it is necessary to quadruple the number of dark pixels to be averaged. This is because the sum of the outputs from n dark pixels increases the horizontal component to n times, but the random noise component becomes √n times by nature, so the random noise component relative to the horizontal noise component is 1 / √n.
Since the horizontal noise has a property of being more noticeable than the random noise component, in many cases, the horizontal noise needs to be 1/10 or less of the random noise component in order to make the horizontal noise component inconspicuous. In order to extract a horizontal noise component of about 1/10 from random noise components included in dark pixels, the conventional method requires 100 or more dark pixels. The dark pixels are often formed in the same shape in order to make the noise characteristics the same as those in the effective area, and it is necessary to arrange 100 or more dark pixels outside the effective pixel area. Further, since the horizontal noise component differs for each selection line, 100 or more dark pixels are provided for each selection line, and the area occupied by the dark pixels increases. This increases the outer shape of the X-ray detector and makes it difficult to develop a small device. In addition, the price of the device increases by mounting an expensive amplifier circuit and digital conversion circuit for signal detection for each dark pixel, and the area including the effective pixel and the dark pixel formed on the photoelectric conversion substrate is increased. Increasing the size will increase the price of the device.

Since the
The
The potential generated by the integrating
By continuously performing such an operation, the X-ray image information incident from the outside is converted into image information by an electric signal and output to the outside. Image information based on the electrical signal output to the outside can be easily imaged by a normal display device, and an X-ray image of the image can be observed as an image by visible light.
By the way, since the
FIG. 5 shows a partial configuration diagram of an
The
The
The
In the
The signals from the
The horizontal pulling noise propagated to the
The
The
The
In this comparative example, the operation will be described on the assumption that the amplification factor of the integrating
In such an operation, let Ny be the magnitude of the horizontal noise included in each
Sg=Sx+Ny+Nr …式1 Sg = Sx + Ny + Nr ... Formula 1
The signal Sd flowing through each
Sd=Ny+Nd …式2 Sd = Ny + Nd Equation 2
Thereafter, the signal Sh flowing through the
Sh=(Ny+Ny+Ny+Ny)/4+(Nd+Nd+Nd+Nd)/4
=Ny+2Nd/4
=Ny+Nd/2 …式3
Sh = (Ny + Ny + Ny + Ny) / 4 + (Nd + Nd + Nd + Nd) / 4
= Ny + 2Nd / 4
= Ny + Nd / 2 ... Formula 3
This is because the horizontal noise Ny flowing through the four
As a result of subtracting the component of the signal Sh flowing through the
Sr=Sg−Sh
=Sx+Ny+Nr−(Ny+Nd/2)
=Sx+Nr+Nd/2 …
Sr = Sg−Sh
= Sx + Ny + Nr- (Ny + Nd / 2)
= Sx + Nr + Nd / 2 Equation 4 (Nd is a random noise component, so it is converted to a + sign for convenience)
Although the horizontal noise component Ny propagating from the
Sr=Sx+Nr+Nd/√n …式5 Sr = Sx + Nr + Nd / √n Equation 5
The increased random noise component [Nd / √n] takes the same value in all of the
Therefore, in order to sufficiently reduce the horizontal noise in the comparative example shown in FIG. 5, 100 or more columns of
The first embodiment of the present invention shown in FIG. 1 solves such a problem. FIG. 1 shows a configuration diagram of a part of the
A feature of the present invention, which is different from the comparative example, is that a plurality of
The signal component Sx amplified from the
Sg=Sx+Ny+Nr …式6 Sg = Sx + Ny + Nr ... Formula 6
A signal from each
Sd=Ny+Ny+Ny+Ny+Nd
=4Ny+Nd …式7
Sd = Ny + Ny + Ny + Ny + Nd
= 4 Ny + Nd ... Formula 7
The
Sh=Sd/4
=(4Ny+Nd)/4
=Ny+Nd/4 …式8
Sh = Sd / 4
= (4Ny + Nd) / 4
= Ny + Nd / 4 ... Formula 8
The image signal Sg flowing through the
Sr=Sg−Sh
=Sx+Ny+Nr−(Ny+Nd/4)
=Sx+Nr+Nd/4 …
Sr = Sg−Sh
= Sx + Ny + Nr- (Ny + Nd / 4)
= Sx + Nr + Nd / 4 Equation 9 (Nd is a random noise component and is converted to a + sign for convenience)
In the corrected image signal expressed by the above equation 9, the horizontal noise component Ny propagating from the
In FIG. 1, the number of columns of the
Sr=Sx+Nr+Nd/n …式10
Sr = Sx + Nr + Nd /
Similar to the comparative example, the number of columns of the
In the comparative example, the number of columns of the
In the first embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the signals from all the
In the second embodiment shown in FIG. 6, the
In the second embodiment shown in FIG. 6, in order to remove the horizontal noise equivalent to that in the first embodiment shown in FIG. 1, it is more than in the first embodiment shown in FIG. 1. The number of
In each embodiment shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 6, the processing after conversion into a digital signal is shown as a hardware circuit. However, even if the equivalent function is realized by software, it is equivalent. It is clear that an effect can be obtained.
