Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a polymer electrolyte fuel cell.
A polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) has a structure in which a plurality of single cells that exhibit a power generation function are stacked. Each of the single cells is also referred to as (1) a polymer electrolyte membrane (for example, a Nafion (registered trademark) membrane) and (2) a pair of (anode, cathode) catalyst layers (an “electrode catalyst layer”) sandwiching the membrane. ), And (3) a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) including a pair of (anode, cathode) gas diffusion layers (GDL) for dispersing the supply gas sandwiching them. And MEA which each single cell has is electrically connected with MEA of the adjacent single cell through the separator. A fuel cell stack is configured by stacking and connecting single cells in this manner. The fuel cell stack can function as power generation means that can be used for various applications. In such a fuel cell stack, the separator exhibits a function of electrically connecting adjacent single cells as described above. In addition to this, a gas flow path is usually provided on the surface of the separator facing the MEA. The gas flow path functions as gas supply means for supplying fuel gas and oxidant gas to the anode and the cathode, respectively.
The power generation mechanism of the PEFC will be briefly described. During operation of the PEFC, a fuel gas (for example, hydrogen gas) is supplied to the anode side of the single cell, and an oxidant gas (for example, air or oxygen) is supplied to the cathode side. As a result, in each of the anode and the cathode, an electrochemical reaction represented by the following reaction formula proceeds to generate electricity.

That is,
Anode reaction: H 2 → 2H + + 2e − (1)

It is.
In order to advance the above-described electrochemical reaction, the GDL needs a gas supply function for efficiently diffusing fuel gas and oxidant gas and supplying them to the catalyst layer.
Patent Document 1 proposes a structure using a foam metal porous body as GDL.
However, the foam metal porous body has a relatively large pressure loss because the formed pores are random. For this reason, a gas diffusion rate becomes slow, and a sufficient gas supply function cannot be obtained, and an electrochemical reaction is hindered, resulting in a decrease in battery output.
An object of the present invention is to provide a polymer electrolyte fuel cell that can secure a sufficient gas supply function by reducing the pressure loss in the gas diffusion path and can achieve high output.
In order to achieve the above object, a polymer electrolyte fuel cell of the present invention comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane, an anode catalyst layer and a cathode catalyst layer provided on each surface of the polymer electrolyte membrane, and a gas having conductivity. An anode separator and a cathode separator. An anode electrode member that forms an anode together with the anode catalyst layer is disposed between the anode catalyst layer and the anode separator. A cathode electrode member that forms a cathode together with the cathode catalyst layer is disposed between the cathode catalyst layer and the cathode separator. Each of the anode electrode member and the cathode electrode member is a conductive fabric in which a plurality of fine grooves are formed in parallel, the groove pitch is 0.2 to 1 mm, and the groove depth is 0. It is composed of a woven fabric that is 2 to 1 mm. And in at least a partial region of the reaction part that contributes to power generation, via the anode catalyst layer, the polymer electrolyte membrane and the cathode catalyst layer, an anode-side groove in the fabric constituting the anode electrode member, The cathode side groove in the fabric constituting the cathode electrode member is crossed.
Each of the anode electrode member and the cathode electrode member is a conductive fabric in which a plurality of fine grooves are formed in parallel, the groove pitch is 0.2 to 1 mm, and the groove depth is 0.2. Since it is composed of a woven fabric having a thickness of ˜1 mm, when viewed in a cross section in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the groove extends, apexes for forming the groove appear regularly and continuously in the woven fabric. . As a result, the gas diffusion path becomes a uniform or regular flow path, and the pressure loss of the gas diffusion path is reduced. For this reason, gas can be diffused efficiently and a sufficient gas supply function can be secured. As a result of promoting the progress of the electrochemical reaction, high output can be achieved.
Furthermore, since the groove on the anode side and the groove on the cathode side intersect, the apex portion of the fabric constituting the anode electrode member and the apex portion of the fabric constituting the cathode electrode member are connected to the anode catalyst layer, the polymer electrolyte. Contact can be made face-to-face through the membrane and cathode catalyst layer. As a result, the contact surface pressure between the anode electrode member and the cathode electrode member can be sufficiently ensured and the number of contact points can be sufficiently ensured as compared with the case where the apex portions of the fabric are displaced. . For this reason, the cell resistance which is an internal resistance is lowered, and the cell voltage can be increased.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. For ease of understanding, the dimensional ratio of each member on the drawing is exaggerated and may be different from the actual ratio.

With reference to FIG. 1 (B) and FIG. 2, the

The

It is preferable that the

[Example 1]
As a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, Nafion CS (registered trademark, manufactured by DuPont) was used. A Teflon (registered trademark) sheet coated with platinum-supporting carbon (TEC10E50E manufactured by Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd., platinum content: 50% by mass) was transferred to the electrolyte membrane by a hot press method to form a catalyst layer. The amount of platinum catalyst used was 0.4 mg / cm 2 for both the anode and cathode.
In order to protect the catalyst layer and improve the current collection, a carbon particle layer (microporous layer; MPL) was pressure-bonded onto the catalyst layer to produce a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, a catalyst layer, and an MPL assembly. MPL impregnates PTFE porous material Poraflon (manufactured by Sumitomo Electric Industries) with an aqueous dispersion composed of acetylene black (manufactured by Denki Kagaku Kogyo), PTFE fine particles Polyflon (manufactured by Daikin Industries), and an appropriate amount of a thickener, and 350 A baking treatment is performed at a temperature of 30 ° C. for 30 minutes.
A stainless mesh having a mesh number of 300 (twill weave, wire diameter 25 μm, mesh opening 26 μm) was processed into a triangular corrugated shape shown in FIG. The groove depth was 200 μm and the pitch was 200 μm.
The stainless mesh was processed so that each of the groove on the anode side and the groove on the cathode side formed a wave-like channel in plan view as shown in FIGS. 3 (A) and 4 (A). The pitch p2, the width w of the wavy flow path, and the pitch p1 of the groove are the same for both the anode-side groove and the cathode-side groove, and the phase of the wavy flow path is the difference between the anode-side groove and the cathode-side groove. The phase was reversed.
The stainless steel mesh was plated with gold of 100 nm thickness to prevent corrosion and reduce contact resistance, thereby producing an electrode member.
An electrode member was placed on the MPL of the catalyst layer and sandwiched between a pair of separators to form a single cell for evaluation. Cutting carbon (made by mechanical carbon) was used as a separator. The shape of the separator was a flat shape without ribs. As shown in FIG. 1A, both the anode and the cathode are composed of a catalyst layer and an electrode member, and no carbon paper, carbon nonwoven fabric, or carbon fiber gas diffusion layer is used.

A stainless steel mesh on the anode side was used that was processed so that the groove formed a wave-like channel in plan view. A stainless steel mesh on the cathode side was used that was processed so that the groove formed a straight channel in plan view. The rest is the same as in the first embodiment.

A stainless steel mesh on the anode side and a stainless steel mesh on the cathode side were processed so that the groove formed a straight channel in plan view. The rest is the same as in the first embodiment.
A power generation test of each evaluation single cell of the example and the comparative example was performed. Hydrogen was supplied to the anode and air was supplied to the cathode. H. /
The evaluation results are shown in FIG. Moreover, the pressure loss of the cathode was 88.0 kPa in Example 1, 30.0 kPa in Example 2, and 30.0 kPa in the comparative example.
As shown in FIG. 10, the cell using the electrode member of the comparative example had a low cell voltage. In the comparative example, since the anode channel structure and the cathode channel structure are both straight, the apex portion of the anode electrode member and the apex portion of the cathode electrode member are shifted due to component tolerance and assembly tolerance. Sometimes. For this reason, it can be inferred that the contact resistance between the anode electrode member and the cathode electrode member is small, the number of contact points is small, and the contact resistance is increased, so that the cell resistance as the internal resistance is increased. .
On the other hand, in the cells using the electrode members of Examples 1 and 2, the anode-side groove and the cathode-side groove intersect in plan view. The apex portion of the anode electrode member and the apex portion of the cathode electrode member face each other through the anode catalyst layer, the polymer electrolyte membrane, and the cathode catalyst layer. For this reason, it can be inferred that the contact resistance between the anode electrode member and the cathode electrode member is large, the number of contact points is large, and the contact resistance is lowered, so that the cell resistance as the internal resistance is lowered. .
In the cells using the electrode members of Examples 1 and 2, the cell voltage does not drop rapidly even under high humidification conditions where flooding is likely to occur. For this reason, it can be inferred that no flooding phenomenon occurs and the cell resistance is low, so that the cell voltage is high even at high current density, and good performance is exhibited.
Furthermore, in Example 2, since the cathode channel structure was straight, the pressure loss of the cathode was smaller than in Example 1. As a result, the load on the compressor that supplies air can be reduced, and the system efficiency can be increased.
From the above, the fuel cell in which the anode-side groove and the cathode-side groove are arranged to intersect each other has a sufficient contact surface pressure between the anode electrode member and the cathode electrode member as compared with the fuel cell that does not intersect. In addition to ensuring the sufficient number of contact points, it was found that the cell resistance, which is the internal resistance, was lowered, the cell voltage was increased, and good performance was exhibited. Furthermore, it has been found that by making the groove on the cathode side straight in a plan view, it is possible to reduce the load of the compressor that supplies air and to increase the system efficiency.
