The present invention relates generally to audio signal processing and, more particularly, to an integrated module that includes a microphone capsule and associated signal processing circuitry.
There are a wide variety of sensors for converting real-world characteristics into electrical signals that can be manipulated for various purposes. For example, electret condenser microphones (ECMs) are used to transmit acoustic signals (eg, human voice) and related devices such as personal computers, cellular phones, wireless phones, conference phones, voice recorders, etc. Convert to analog electrical signal that can be supplied to. Many such related devices include a well-known analog input interface for receiving an electrical signal representative of an acoustic signal captured by one or more ECMs.
For example, FIG. 5 shows a conventional ECM 50 connected to an associated
The analog output signal (OUT) is supplied from the
In many applications, it is desirable to improve the sound quality of an acoustic signal generated by a microphone such as the ECM50. For example, a circuit based on digital signal processing (DSP) is connected between the ECM and a related device, and an electric signal generated by the ECM is reduced in noise and directivity to improve sound quality. It can be configured to process using various techniques such as degrees. DSP-based solutions typically include an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a DSP circuit, and possibly a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The ADC converts the analog signal received from the ECM into a digital signal, ie, a digital signal that can be processed so that the DSP circuit performs one or more desired functions such as noise reduction and / or directivity sensitivity. . The DAC converts the digital signal output from the DSP circuit back into an analog electrical signal that is compatible with the input to the
The various components of the DSP engine (eg, DSP circuitry, ADC and DAC circuitry, and other related circuitry) are relatively complex, require a significant amount of silicon area, such as the

It should be understood that a sound processing module according to embodiments of the present invention may include any suitable number of ECM capsules. In other embodiments, other types of microphone sensors (eg, those fabricated in silicon using micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology) can be used. As an alternative, embodiments of the present invention may include sensors other than microphone sensors, such as accelerometers. In the following description, for the purposes of explanation, specific terminology is set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. In other instances, well-known circuits and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the present invention. For example, the interconnections between circuit elements or circuit blocks may be shown or described as multiple conductors or single conductor signal lines. Each of the signal lines made up of a plurality of conductors can alternatively be a signal line made up of a plurality of single conductors, and each of the signal lines of a plurality of single conductors can be made up of a plurality of conductors as an alternative. Signal lines. Signals and signal paths shown or described as single-ended may be differential, and signals and signal paths shown or described as differential may be single-ended. Further, the logic states of the various signals described herein are exemplary, and thus can be inverted or otherwise changed as is generally known in the art. Accordingly, the present invention should not be construed as limited to the particular embodiments described herein, but includes within its scope all embodiments defined by the appended claims. .
In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, an integrated acoustic processing module is disclosed that includes a plurality of ECM capsules that are directly connected to a signal processing circuit, the signal processing circuit including noise reduction and / or directivity. Techniques such as directional sensitivity can be used to improve the sound quality of the acoustic signal captured by the ECM capsule. In some embodiments, the sound processing module also includes non-volatile memory for storing configuration information and / or various sound profiles for the signal processing circuit. All components of the acoustic processing module are encapsulated together in a casing, which electrically isolates the acoustic processing module from external interference such as electric, magnetic, RF (radio frequency) waves. In this way, the ECM capsule of the module can be connected directly to the signal processing circuit, for example, without using a JFET driver, thereby reducing the size and power consumption of the module.
In some embodiments, the signal processing circuitry of the module processes the signal received from the ECM capsule entirely in the analog domain and consumes more than a DSP engine and / or microprocessor executing signal processing software. Use analog processing circuits with significantly less power. For example, a major factor in power consumption in digital circuits is switching between 0 (logic low) and 1 (logic high), which can charge node capacitance from ground to power supply voltage in a short time and Requires discharge. On the other hand, the analog implementation does not require such an intense signal swing in such a short time. Further, since a single signal is represented digitally using multiple bits, multiple nodes must be charged and discharged simultaneously for each operation. On the other hand, an analog signal can be represented by a voltage at a single node. In addition, by using signal processing circuits that operate in the analog domain, embodiments of the present invention do not require ADC and DAC converters, thereby further reducing circuit size and power consumption.
An
The
In one embodiment, acoustic processing can be used to form an acoustic beam, referred to as a “beamformer” function. An acoustic beam is equivalent to having increased microphone sensitivity in one or more preferred directions and reduced sensitivity in one or more other directions. Such a beam can be formed using two or more microphones and appropriate signal processing. Such beams can also be configured as fixed or variable. In the latter case, the acoustic beam (direction of sensitivity) can be processed to change in response to acoustic signals such as unwanted interference. When an acoustic beam is “steered” dynamically in a certain direction, this function is called “beam steering”. In the embodiments disclosed herein, the signal processing included in the integrated module can perform both beamforming and beam steering operations as required by the application. Beamforming is a subset of beam steering (specifically in the case of fixed beams), so for purposes of explanation, the terms “beamforming” and “beam steering” are used interchangeably herein. Note that it is used.
The
The
As described above, by using an analog signal processing circuit instead of a DSP engine, not only power consumption is reduced, but also the circuit size can be reduced. In addition, by connecting the ECM capsule directly with the analog signal processing circuit and housing them together in an electrically shielded integrated casing, the JFET driver typically required by the ECM sensor is eliminated. Can be achieved, thereby further reducing power consumption and circuit size. As a result, the acoustic processing module according to the present embodiment is smaller than a conventional microphone system that performs signal processing so as to improve sound quality. For example, in one embodiment of the
Further, as is known in the art, JFET drivers (eg,

FIG. 2 shows a simplified block diagram of an
The input buffers 221 to 222 are well known, and supply the analog electrical signals generated by the
In some embodiments, the configuration information stored in
Further, in some embodiments, the
Further, in other embodiments, the
As described above, the beam steering circuit 223 can operate only in the analog domain and provides an ECM compatible analog output signal to the
Although the invention has been described with reference to specific exemplary embodiments thereof, various changes and modifications can be made without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. It will be clear that this can be done. The specification and drawings are accordingly to be regarded in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense. For example, the modules of the present invention can include types of sensors other than acoustic sensors. One such example is a glass breakage detector module, in which case the sensor can be a combination of an acoustic sensor and an impact sensor, the process of which can be exemplified by impact detection, timing evaluation, It may include acoustic pattern matching and the like. All of these are well housed in a small module and provide a robust “plug and play” glass break detection signal by simply sending on / off signals compatible with traditional passive sensors To do.
