Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a structure for efficiently connecting a plurality of single-core fibers to a multi-core fiber applicable to a part of an optical communication system.
Conventionally, in order to provide an FTTH (Fiber To The Home) service that enables optical communication between one transmitting station and a plurality of subscribers, for example, as shown in FIG. 7, a multi-stage optical splitter is interposed. Thus, a so-called PON (Passive Optical Network) system is realized in which each subscriber shares one optical fiber.
That is, the PON system shown in FIG. 7 is between the terminal station 1 (transmitting station), which is the final relay station of an existing communication system such as the Internet, and between the
The
As described above, in the PON system shown in FIG. 7, the
However, in a PON system in which a plurality of subscribers share a single optical fiber through multistage optical splitters as described above, future transmission capacity such as congestion control (Congestion Control) and securing of a receiving dynamic range, etc. It is true that there is a technical challenge against this increase. As a means for solving this technical problem (congestion control, securing a dynamic range, etc.), a transition to an SS (Single Star) system can be considered. When migrating to the SS system, the number of fiber cores on the inner side of the station increases with respect to the PON system. Therefore, it is essential to make the diameter and the ultra-high density of the optical cable inside the station. A multi-core fiber is suitable as the optical fiber for ultra-fine diameter and ultra-high density.
For example, as a multi-core fiber, the optical fiber disclosed in
The inventors have found the following problems as a result of examining the above-described conventional technology.
That is, the multicore fiber described in
In addition, since the multi-core fiber described in
On the other hand, in FTTH, the number of fiber cores increases as the number of subscribers increases, so it is also true that the fiber storage space in the station is being pressed, and a multi-core fiber having a one-dimensional core arrangement and a multi-core having a two-dimensional core arrangement. It can be easily imagined that the demand for using any of the fibers will increase.
However, network resources that are assumed to be connected to a multi-core fiber having a plurality of cores as described above, such as general optical equipment, are premised on being connected to a station via a single core fiber. However, this is a technical issue. In other words, considering the connection between a multi-core fiber and multiple single-core fibers, the core spacing of the multi-core fibers and the outer diameter of each single-core fiber differ greatly, so the multi-core fiber and multiple single-core fibers are directly connected. It was difficult to do. In this case, as shown in FIG. 8, the
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and increases the connection loss when optically connecting a plurality of single-core fibers to a multi-core fiber having a plurality of cores. An object of the present invention is to provide a fiber array having a structure for effectively suppressing and an optical connector including the same.
The present invention relates to a multi-core fiber having a plurality of cores each individually functioning as an optical waveguide, and a fiber array having a structure for enabling efficient connection between a plurality of single-core fibers, etc. In order to solve the problem, a holding member fixed to a light emitting end face of a multicore fiber to be connected and a plurality of single core fibers are provided.
Specifically, the holding member includes a first end face facing the light emitting end face of the multi-core fiber, a second end face facing the first end face, and a plurality of through holes communicating between the first and second end faces. Have. The plurality of through holes are arranged so as to coincide with the core arrangement (either one-dimensional arrangement or two-dimensional arrangement) on the light emitting end face of the multi-core fiber to be connected. In each of the plurality of single core fibers, the tip portion including the end face is shaped to be thinner than the outer diameter of the remaining portion, and the tip portion of each single core fiber is inserted into the corresponding through hole of the holding member. Has been. In this way, by reducing the diameter of each tip portion of the plurality of single core fibers, the distance between the light incident end faces of the single core fibers at the first end face of the holding member facing the light emitting end face of the multicore fiber is It becomes possible to make it correspond with the core space | interval in the light-projection end surface of a multi-core fiber.
In the fiber array according to the present invention, it is preferable that the holding member has an asymmetrical outer shape when viewed from the first end surface toward the second end surface. That is, the side surface of the holding member preferably includes a flat surface at least partially. According to this configuration, the fiber array can be easily installed on the guide member and the like, and the through hole arrangement in the holding member can be easily confirmed.
In the fiber array according to the present invention, the thinning process for the tip portion of each of the plurality of single core fibers is performed in the direction of the length of each single core fiber having a core outer diameter larger than the core outer diameter of the multicore fiber. It is a reality that each single-core fiber that is drawn or has the same core outer diameter as that of the multi-core fiber but has a thin cladding outer diameter is manufactured in advance, or the surface of each single-core fiber is etched. Is. The holding member preferably includes a capillary.
An optical connector according to the present invention includes a fiber array having the above-described structure (a fiber array according to the present invention) and a sleeve having a space for storing at least a holding member in a predetermined position in the fiber array.
According to the fiber array and the optical connector according to the present invention, it is possible to arrange the light incident ends of a plurality of single core fibers so as to match the core arrangement at the light exit end of the multicore fiber. There is no need for a new configuration for changing the interval. Therefore, it is possible to effectively suppress an increase in connection loss in optical connection of a plurality of single core fibers to a multicore fiber.
Hereinafter, embodiments of a fiber array and an optical connector according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. In the description of the drawings, the same elements are denoted by the same reference numerals, and redundant description is omitted.
FIG. 1 is a diagram for explaining the configuration of an embodiment of a fiber array according to the present invention and an example of its use. As shown in FIG. 1, the fiber array according to this embodiment efficiently connects a
Specifically, the fiber array according to the present embodiment includes a capillary 100 as a holding member fixed to the light emitting end face of the
On the other hand, in each of the plurality of
Next, the manufacturing process of the fiber array according to this embodiment will be described with reference to FIG.
First, a capillary 100 having a plurality of through
Here, the capillary 100 is made of a glass material, but the constituent material itself may be a material such as ceramic, metal, or resin. The capillary 100 may be integrally formed using a mold. The plurality of through
Each of the plurality of
As shown in FIG. 2C, each of the plurality of
The
According to the fiber array according to the present embodiment obtained through the above steps, the core interval on the light emitting end face of the
In the capillary 100 described above, since the plurality of through
For example, FIG. 3A shows a configuration of a capillary 110 having a two-dimensional core array conversion function, and FIG. 3B shows a configuration of a capillary 120 having a core interval conversion function. Yes.
Specifically, the capillary 110 shown in FIG. 3A includes a
The capillary 120 shown in FIG. 3B includes a
Next, a connection operation (core alignment operation) between the fiber array according to the present embodiment and a multicore fiber having a two-dimensional core array will be described with reference to FIG.
As shown in FIG. 4, the
In the alignment operation between the
After alignment, the adhesive between the
FIG. 5 is a perspective view for explaining a modified example of the capillary applicable to the fiber array according to the present embodiment. As described above, the
FIG. 5A is a perspective view showing the structure of the capillary 11 (
On the other hand, FIG. 5B is a perspective view showing the structure of the capillary 12 (
According to the
Next, an embodiment of an optical connector according to the present invention will be described. FIG. 6 is a diagram showing a configuration of an embodiment of the optical connector according to the present invention.
