Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal device and a head-mounted display device using the same.
In recent years, head-mounted displays (head-mounted display devices, head mounted displays; HMDs) have become widespread. In general, a liquid crystal device is used as a display mounted on the HMD. Since the liquid crystal device itself does not emit light, a backlight is an essential component. For this reason, it is necessary to supply more power to the backlight of the liquid crystal device as the image display with high brightness is required in the HMD, and the power consumption increases.
In order to reduce the power consumption of the backlight, it is necessary to efficiently make the light propagated in the light guide plate of the backlight incident on the liquid crystal panel. For example, in
In the technique of
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and an object thereof is to provide a bright and low power consumption liquid crystal device and a head-mounted display device using the same.
In order to solve the above problems, a liquid crystal device according to the present invention includes a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other, a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate, and the first substrate. A light guide plate disposed on a side of the substrate opposite to the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided, a light source for making light incident on an end surface of the light guide plate, and a side of the light guide plate opposite to the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided A first light transmission type reflector that is disposed on the side and reflects light from the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided and transmits external light incident from the side opposite to the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided. It is characterized by providing.
According to this configuration, light (light from the backlight or external light) from the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided is reflected on the side opposite to the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided (back surface of the backlight). In addition, a first light transmission type reflection plate (first half mirror) that transmits external light incident from the side opposite to the side on which the liquid crystal layer is provided is disposed. That is, in the first half mirror of the present invention, the reflective layer described in
The liquid crystal device may further include a light collecting plate that is provided on the light emitting surface side of the light guide plate and collects at least one of the light from the light source and the external light.
According to this configuration, it is possible to suppress loss due to surface reflection of at least one of light from the light source emitted from the light guide plate and external light. Therefore, it is possible to remarkably increase the light use efficiency and reliably achieve low power consumption.
A head-mounted display device according to the present invention includes the liquid crystal device according to
According to this configuration, since the liquid crystal device is provided, a bright and low power consumption head-mounted display device (HMD) can be provided.
The head-mounted display device includes a lens that emits light emitted from the liquid crystal device toward the eyes of the observer, and the lens has at least an optical working surface that transmits or reflects light. A free-form surface formed by a rotationally asymmetric surface that does not have a rotationally symmetric axis on the inside and outside of the at least one surface that reflects light in the prism among the at least three optical action surfaces. It may consist of a prism.
According to this configuration, since the lens that emits the light (display image light) emitted from the liquid crystal device toward the observer's eyes is formed of the free-form surface prism, the display image light is reflected on the reflection surface in the free-form surface prism, A plurality of optical paths are bent and bent by the refractive surface. For example, the free-form surface prism has three optical action surfaces, and has a first surface having only a transmission action and both transmission and reflection actions in the path from the light exit surface side of the liquid crystal device to the eyes of the observer. It is assumed that the second surface and the third surface having only a reflecting action are included. Then, the display image light of the liquid crystal device is refracted by the first surface and enters the prism, is reflected by the second surface and is incident on the third surface, and the display image light reflected by the third surface is the second surface. The light is refracted and exits from the prism and is emitted toward the observer's eyes. In addition, since the shape of at least one surface that reflects the light in the prism is formed by a rotationally asymmetric surface that does not have a rotationally symmetric axis inside and outside the surface, it is formed by a conventional rotationally symmetric surface. Rather than using a lens, the direction of the light emitted from the liquid crystal device can be changed with a small number of parts toward the observer's eyes with high accuracy. Therefore, it is possible to obtain an HMD that can be reduced in size and weight and that can accurately correct the direction of light.
The head-mounted display device includes a lens that transmits light emitted from the liquid crystal device and a light emitting surface side of the lens, and the direction of the light emitted from the lens is determined by the observer. A second light transmission type reflection plate that reflects toward the eye and transmits external light incident from a direction parallel to the direction toward the observer's eye.
According to this configuration, the external light incident on the light exit surface side of the lens is reflected from the direction of the light emitted from the lens toward the viewer's eyes and is incident in a direction parallel to the direction toward the viewer's eyes. A second light transmission type reflecting plate (second half mirror) is disposed. Therefore, even when the liquid crystal device is mounted on a see-through type HMD, it is possible to obtain a bright and low-power-consumption HMD that is not affected by external brightness.

The

The
The
In addition, a plurality of
The
Further, a groove-
In addition, a plurality of semi-circular
The
That is, in the
The
Further, on the bottom surface of the
According to the
Further, according to this configuration, since the
In the

The
Specifically, the free-form surface prism has a
Further, the shapes of the two surfaces, the
With such a configuration, at least one of light from the
For example, when the
According to the
Further, according to this configuration, the
In the
Further, as shown in FIG. 3, the
FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram showing a schematic configuration of an
As shown in FIG. 3, the
The
