Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for charging a lithium ion battery, a lithium ion battery, an assembled battery, a battery system, a charge control device, and a vehicle.
Conventionally, there are the following methods for charging lithium ion batteries. A battery is provided with a reference electrode made of metallic lithium or a lithium alloy in addition to the positive electrode and the negative electrode. At the time of charging, the charging is terminated before the potential difference between the reference electrode and the negative electrode is lowered to a potential difference at which metallic lithium is deposited on the negative electrode (Patent Document 1).
However, in the conventional method, the charging is terminated by the potential at which metallic lithium is deposited on the negative electrode, so that the charging is stopped before the positive electrode capacity is completely charged. For this reason, there is a problem that charging that sufficiently satisfies the positive electrode capacity cannot be performed, and the utilization efficiency of the positive electrode active material is poor.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a method for charging a lithium ion battery that can be charged to sufficiently satisfy the positive electrode capacity. Another object of the present invention is to provide a lithium ion battery that can be charged to sufficiently satisfy the positive electrode capacity. Still another object of the present invention is to provide an assembled battery comprising this lithium ion battery, a battery system, and a vehicle using such a lithium ion battery.
In order to achieve the above object, a charging method according to the present invention includes a first positive electrode and a second positive electrode that include the same positive electrode active material and are electrically separated, and a negative electrode disposed opposite to the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode. Is a charging method for a lithium ion battery including First, a voltage is applied at a constant current between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode, and charging is performed for a predetermined time (first charging stage). Thereafter, the second positive electrode is used as a reference electrode, and charging is performed by applying a voltage between the first positive electrode and the negative electrode so that the potential of the negative electrode with respect to the reference electrode is not more than a predetermined potential (second charging stage).
In order to achieve the above object, a lithium ion battery according to the present invention includes a first positive electrode including a positive electrode active material and a second positive electrode including the same positive electrode active material as the positive electrode active material used in the first positive electrode. It is electrically separated from one positive electrode. A negative electrode is disposed opposite to the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode via a separator.
In order to achieve the above object, an assembled battery according to the present invention comprises a plurality of the lithium ion batteries connected in series and / or in parallel.
In order to achieve the above object, a battery system according to the present invention includes a first positive electrode and a second positive electrode that include the same positive electrode active material and are electrically separated, and a negative electrode disposed opposite to the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode. And a charge control means. The charge control means first applies a voltage with a constant current between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode, and performs constant current charging for a predetermined time. Thereafter, using the second positive electrode as a reference electrode, constant voltage charging is performed by applying a voltage between the first positive electrode and the negative electrode until the potential of the negative electrode with respect to the reference electrode reaches a predetermined potential. After reaching the predetermined potential, constant voltage charging is performed by further applying a voltage between the first positive electrode and the negative electrode so that the potential of the negative electrode with respect to the reference electrode is less than the predetermined potential.
In order to achieve the above object, a charge control device according to the present invention includes a first positive electrode and a second positive electrode that include the same positive electrode active material and are electrically separated from each other, and are disposed opposite to each other via a separator. It is an apparatus for charging a lithium ion battery including a negative electrode. This charge control device has charge control means. Then, the charging control means first applies a voltage with a constant current between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode, and performs constant current charging for a predetermined time.
A vehicle according to the present invention for achieving the above object is equipped with the lithium ion battery, the assembled battery, or the battery system.
According to the method for charging a lithium ion battery according to the present invention, the second positive electrode is charged first and used as a reference electrode. Therefore, when charging using the first positive electrode, the negative electrode potential with respect to the reference electrode is set to metal lithium. The potential can be made nobler than the deposition potential. For this reason, the deposition of metallic lithium is suppressed, and charging is possible until it becomes lower than the deposition potential of metallic lithium, thereby improving the coulomb efficiency of the battery. Therefore, charging that sufficiently satisfies the capacity of the positive electrode active material can be performed.
According to the lithium ion battery of the present invention, since the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode using the same active material are electrically separated, only the second positive electrode is charged in advance and used as a reference electrode. Will be able to. Therefore, if only the second positive electrode is charged first and used as the reference electrode, then the negative electrode potential with respect to the reference electrode can be set to a noble potential with respect to the deposition potential of metallic lithium and charged using the first positive electrode. Thus, the battery can be charged until it becomes lower than the deposition potential of metallic lithium, so that the coulomb efficiency of the battery is improved, and charging that sufficiently satisfies the capacity of the positive electrode active material can be performed.
According to the assembled battery according to the present invention, since the lithium ion battery to be incorporated can perform charging that sufficiently satisfies the capacity of the positive electrode active material, not only the capacity of the assembled battery becomes large, but also the usage time is long. can do.
According to the battery system of the present invention, since the second positive electrode is charged first and used as the reference electrode, the negative electrode potential with respect to the reference electrode is determined from the deposition potential of metallic lithium when charging using the first positive electrode. Can also be a noble potential.
According to the charge control device of the present invention, the reference electrode can be obtained by charging the second positive electrode of the battery first. For this reason, when charging using the first positive electrode, the negative electrode potential with respect to the reference electrode can be made nobler than the deposition potential of metallic lithium and charged until it becomes lower than the deposition potential of metallic lithium. Therefore, it is possible to improve the coulomb efficiency of the battery and perform charging that sufficiently satisfies the capacity of the positive electrode active material.
According to the vehicle of the present invention, the mounted lithium ion battery, the assembled battery, or the lithium ion battery used in the battery system can perform charging that sufficiently satisfies the capacity of the positive electrode active material. The travel distance per full charge can be extended.

The

The
FIG. 6 is a flowchart showing the operation procedure of this battery system.
First, the
Subsequently, the
After the predetermined time has elapsed, the
The
On the other hand, when the predetermined voltage is reached, the
After switching to the constant voltage charging in S5, the charging is terminated when the positive electrode and the substance having a potential lower than the predetermined voltage are sufficiently used and the charging is completed (S6). The determination of the end of charging may be, for example, the end of charging when the voltage between the second
Here, the voltage between the reference electrode and the negative electrode and the potential of the negative electrode with respect to the reference electrode have been described, but these are values measured by the
When the electric power is taken out from the
When the charging
On the other hand, when the
The operation of the first embodiment will be described.
In the
Therefore, in the present embodiment, when the second
A preferable value of x in LixFePO 4 is x = 0.95 to 0.15 (x represents a composition ratio of Li per mole of the composition formula LixFePO 4 ). This range of x is a composition in the state of 3.4 V indicating potential flatness.
FIG. 7 is a graph for explaining potential flatness. The horizontal axis shows the composition ratio of Li in LixFePO 4 (value of x), and the vertical axis shows the potential of LixFePO 4 versus the reference electrode (E / V vs Li / Li +) when metallic lithium is used as the reference electrode. As can be seen from this graph, when x is 0.95 to 0.15, there is almost no potential change and the surface is flat.
For this reason, the second
In many cases, various additives are contained in the electrolyte. Among these, there is an additive that suppresses deterioration by forming a film on the negative electrode. Such an additive is decomposed at a potential on the negative electrode to form a film on the negative electrode. At this time, if a material having a very low potential (2 V or less) such as metallic lithium is used as a reference electrode, metallic lithium reacts with the additive and is consumed, so that the effect of suppressing deterioration of the battery by the additive is lost. End up. However, in this embodiment, LixFePO 4 is used for the reference electrode in a region exhibiting potential flatness, and therefore the potential is 3.4V. Thus additives, this LixFePO 4 is not be consumed by reacting with (Li therein). Therefore, the effect of the additive can be maximized. For this reason, durability of a battery can be improved.
Further, in this embodiment, so-called olivine positive electrodes represented by the chemical formula LiFePO 4 are used as the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode. As already described, the use of the olivine positive electrode has a potential flat portion in the electric potential during charging, unlike other positive electrode materials. For this reason, there is almost no change in potential due to change over time (self-discharge) during charging used as a reference electrode. Therefore, it functions stably as a reference electrode.
In addition, the magnitude | size of the 2nd
From such a viewpoint, in addition to the structure in which the first
Next, each member constituting this embodiment will be described.
(Positive electrode and negative electrode)
The positive electrode and the negative electrode each include a positive electrode active material and a negative electrode active material.
The positive electrode active materials (first positive electrode active material and second positive electrode active material) include, for example, olivine-type lithium cobalt phosphate and olivine-type phosphate in addition to the olivine-type lithium iron phosphate represented by the chemical formula LiFePO 4 described above. An olivine-type lithium-transition metal phosphate compound such as manganese lithium can be used. Even when these olivine-type materials are used as the positive electrode active material, as in the above-described LiFePO 4 , the second positive electrode is charged only to the extent that it has potential flatness in the two-phase coexistence region during charging, and thereafter the reference Charge as a pole.
In addition, about a 1st positive electrode active material, it is not limited to such an olivine type material, In addition, the material used as a positive electrode active material of a lithium ion secondary battery can be used. For example, lithium-transition metal composite oxides such as LiMn 2 O 4 , LiCoO 2 , LiNiO 2 , Li (Ni—Co—Mn) O 2 and a part of these transition metals substituted with other elements, A lithium-transition metal sulfate compound or the like can be used, and in some cases, two or more positive electrode active materials may be used in combination. For this reason, the 1st positive electrode active material which comprises a 1st positive electrode, and the 2nd positive electrode active material which comprises a 2nd positive electrode may be different positive electrode active materials.
On the other hand, examples of the negative electrode active material include carbon materials such as graphite, soft carbon, and hard carbon.
The positive electrode and the negative electrode may contain, for example, a binder, a conductive additive, an electrolyte salt (lithium salt), an ion conductive polymer, and the like as additives.
Among these, examples of the conductive assistant include carbon materials such as acetylene black, carbon black, graphite, and vapor grown carbon fiber. These effectively form an electronic network inside the active material layer and contribute to improving the output characteristics of the battery.
Examples of the electrolyte salt (lithium salt) include Li (C 2 F 5 SO 2 ) 2 N), LiPF 6 , LiBF 4 , LiClO 4 , LiAsF 6 , LiCF 3 SO 3 and the like.
Examples of the ion conductive polymer include polyethylene oxide (PEO) -based and polypropylene oxide (PPO) -based polymers.
The binder is an additive that plays a role in binding the active material and the conductive additive. The binder is not particularly limited as long as it can bind the active material and the conductive additive. For example, thermoplastic polymer, fluororesin, fluororubber, etc. are used.
Since the mixing ratio of these positive electrode active material and negative electrode active material and the components of the additives contained in them can be implemented by appropriately referring to known knowledge as a non-aqueous solvent secondary battery, a detailed explanation is provided. Omitted. Moreover, there is no restriction | limiting in particular also about the thickness (thickness of each active material layer) of a positive electrode and a negative electrode, The conventionally well-known knowledge about a battery can be referred suitably.
(Separator and electrolyte)
Examples of the separator include a microporous film made of polyolefin such as polyethylene and polypropylene. The separator is impregnated with an electrolyte.
The electrolyte can be, for example, a liquid electrolyte. The liquid electrolyte has a form in which a lithium salt that is a supporting salt is dissolved in an organic solvent that is a plasticizer. Examples of the organic solvent that can be used as the plasticizer include carbonates such as ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC). Examples of the supporting salt (lithium salt) include inorganic acid anion salts and organic acid anion salts.
Further, instead of the separator impregnated with the liquid electrolyte, the polymer electrolyte itself may be used as the separator. The polymer electrolyte is classified into, for example, a gel electrolyte containing an electrolytic solution and an intrinsic polymer electrolyte containing no electrolytic solution.
The gel electrolyte has a configuration in which the above liquid electrolyte is injected into a matrix polymer made of an ion conductive polymer. Examples of the ion conductive polymer used as the matrix polymer include polyethylene oxide (PEO), polypropylene oxide (PPO), and copolymers thereof. In such polyalkylene oxide polymers, electrolyte salts such as lithium salts can be well dissolved.
In these electrolytes, vinylene carbonate (VC), ethylene carbonate (EC), diethylene carbonate auto (DEC), lithium bisoxalate borate (LiBOB), ethylene sulfite (ES), chloroethylene carbonate (Cl) -EC) or other conventionally known additives may be included. As described above, this additive forms a film on the negative electrode and suppresses deterioration.
(Current collector)
The current collector is made of a conductive material on both the positive electrode side and the negative electrode side. The positive electrode side and the negative electrode side may be made of the same material or different materials. For example, a metal or a conductive polymer can be employed. Specifically, metal materials, such as aluminum, nickel, iron, stainless steel, titanium, copper, are mentioned, for example. In addition to these, a clad material of nickel and aluminum, a clad material of copper and aluminum, or a plating material of a combination of these metals can be preferably used. Moreover, the foil by which aluminum is coat | covered on the metal surface may be sufficient. Of these, aluminum and copper are preferable from the viewpoints of electron conductivity and battery operating potential.
The size and thickness of the current collector are not particularly limited as long as the current collector has a size suitable for the battery capacity and can function as a current collector.
(Positive electrode tab and negative electrode tab)
The positive electrode tab and the negative electrode tab are electrically connected to each current collector for the purpose of taking out current outside the battery. The material may be the same as or different from the current collector. Furthermore, it is good also as a positive electrode tab and a negative electrode tab by extending each electrical power collector.
(Battery exterior material)
In the case of the flat form shown in FIG. 1, a bag-like case using a laminate film containing aluminum can be used as the battery exterior material. For example, a laminate film having a three-layer structure in which polypropylene, aluminum, and nylon are laminated in this order can be used as the laminate film, but the laminate film is not limited thereto. A metal can case can also be used.

The charging
FIG. 12 is a flowchart showing an operation procedure of the battery system according to the second embodiment.
First, the
正極活物質にLiFePO4を使用した場合は、LixFePO4(ただし、x=0.95〜0.15)になるまでの時間である。
Subsequently, the
After the predetermined time has elapsed, the
On the other hand, when the predetermined voltage is reached, the
After switching to the constant voltage charging in S25, the charging ends when the predetermined charging end voltage is reached or when the charging end time is reached, as in the first embodiment (S26). The end of charging is performed by setting the
The charging process is thus completed.
When taking out electric power from the
As described above, in the second embodiment, only the second
The second embodiment configured as described above has the same operation as that of the first embodiment. That is, by using the second

The separator of the above (3) is impregnated with the electrolyte of the above (4), and the positive electrodes made by the above (1) are insulated in parallel to each other as shown in FIG. The first positive electrode and the second positive electrode were provided.
The area of the first positive electrode was 6.8 cm × 6.3 cm = 42.84 cm 2 , and the area of the second positive electrode was 6.8 cm × 0.5 cm = 3.40 cm 2 . The insulating space distance between the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode was 0.1 cm. Moreover, the size of the separator was 7.8 cm × 7.8 cm.
In addition, aluminum which is a positive electrode current collector that supports the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode is also separated and insulated.
The first positive electrode and the second positive electrode were disposed on one surface of the separator, and the negative electrode prepared in (2) was disposed on the other surface. The size of the negative electrode is 7 cm × 7 cm.
In this way, a single-layer battery in which the negative electrode was disposed opposite to the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode via the separator was manufactured.
Here, for Example 2, 0.5% by mass of vinylene carbonate (VC) was added as an additive to the electrolyte. In addition, the structure of Example 1 and 3 is the same, and the experiment mentioned later differs.
(Comparative Example 1)
A single-layer battery in which the separator of (3) is impregnated with the electrolyte of (4), the positive electrode made in (1) above is provided on one side of the separator, and the negative electrode of (2) is provided on the other side. Was made. The size of the positive electrode was 6.8 cm × 6.8 cm, the size of the negative electrode was 7 cm × 7 cm, and the size of the separator was 7.8 cm × 7.8 cm.
(Comparative Example 2)
A single-layer battery having the same configuration as that of Comparative Example 1 and having 0.5% by mass of vinylene carbonate (VC) added as an additive to the electrolyte was manufactured (Experiment 1).
The single-layer battery of Example 1 was first subjected to constant current charging at 85 mA for 4 minutes using only the second positive electrode as initial charging (during this time, no voltage was applied to the first positive electrode). As a result, LiFePO 4 was changed to Li0.6FePO 4 .
Thereafter, constant current charging was performed by applying a voltage between the first electrode and the negative electrode until the voltage between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode reached 3.4 V at 85 mA. Furthermore, when the voltage between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode became 3.4 V, the charging was switched to constant voltage charging, and charging was performed for about 4 hours until the voltage between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode became 5 mV.
Here, the initial charge time of 4 minutes using only the second positive electrode was determined as follows.
The theoretical capacity for LiFePO 4 to become FePO 4 is 96500 / 157.46 / 3600/1000 = 170 (mAh / g). Note that 96500 is a Faraday constant, 157.46 is a molecular weight of LiFePO 4 , and 3600 is a constant for converting C (Coulomb) to Ah.
Here, since the area of the second positive electrode is 6.8 (cm) × 0.5 (cm) = 3.40 (cm 2 ), the theoretical capacity at which LiFePO 4 becomes all FePO 4 is 30 (mg) × 0. .86 (wt%) × 170 (mAh) × 3.4 (g) = 15 (mAh). In this example, since the target value of x of LixFePO 4 of the second positive electrode was set to 0.6, when charging only the second positive electrode to make Li0.6FePO 4 , a simple theoretical calculation yields (15 (mAh) × (1-0.6)) / 85 (mA) = 0.071 (h) = 4.2 (min).
As shown in FIG. 7, since the potential flatness is very wide, it is not necessary to strictly set x = 0.6, and the charging time may be within a range of x = 0.15 to 0.95. .
Meanwhile, in order to fully charge using the first positive electrode, since the area of the first positive electrode 6.8cm × 6.3cm = 42.84 (cm 2 ), all become FePO 4 volume 30 × 0.86 × 170 × 42.84 = 188 (mAh). The charging time is theoretically (188 (mAh) × 1) / 85 (mA) = 2.2 (h).
Accordingly, when charged for 4 hours, almost all the active material LiFePO 4 of the first positive electrode becomes FePO 4 .
On the other hand, in Comparative Example 1, constant current and constant voltage charging was performed for 4 hours at a current of 85 mA and a voltage of 4.0 V.
Then, it discharged using the single layer battery of Example 1 and a comparative example after charge. The discharge was performed at a constant current of 85 mA until the battery voltage reached 2.0 V, and the ratio of the amount of discharged electricity to the amount of charged electricity at that time, that is, the coulomb efficiency was calculated.
Table 1 shows the results of Coulomb efficiency.
As can be seen from Table 1, Example 1 has higher coulomb efficiency than the comparative example. From this, it can be understood that the utilization efficiency with respect to the positive electrode active material is increased by performing the initial charging on the second positive electrode and charging with the first positive electrode using this as the reference electrode.
(Experiment 2)
The single-layer batteries of Examples 2 and 3 were initially charged in the same manner as in
From Table 2, it can be seen that the capacity retention ratio against repeated charging and discharging in Examples 1 and 2 is higher than that in Comparative Example 2. In particular, Example 2 to which VC is added is better than Example 3 to which VC is not added, and the capacity retention is greatly improved as compared to Comparative Example 2 to which VC is similarly added.
According to the embodiments and examples described above, the following effects are obtained.
The second positive electrode is charged first and used as a reference electrode (charging at this time is referred to as initial charging). Thereby, when charging using the first positive electrode, the negative electrode potential with respect to the reference electrode can be made nobler than the deposition potential of metallic lithium.
Since the voltage between the reference electrode and the negative electrode is monitored and the constant current charging is switched to the constant voltage charging when the predetermined voltage is reached, the charging current at the end of charging can be quickly reduced. For this reason, precipitation of Li on the negative electrode is suppressed, and the Coulomb efficiency is improved.
In addition, when an additive is added to the electrolyte, consumption of the additive is suppressed and durability is improved.
The initial charging to the second positive electrode may be performed together with the first positive electrode (Embodiment 1) or only to the second positive electrode (Embodiment 2). When performed together with the first positive electrode, the charging time for charging through the first positive electrode after making the second positive electrode the reference electrode, compared with the case where the initial charge is performed only on the second positive electrode accordingly. Shorter. Conversely, when initial charging is performed only on the second positive electrode, the time for converting the second positive electrode to the reference electrode can be shortened. For this reason, it is suitable for quick charge so that it can be used to some extent, not fully charged.
The positive electrode active material is preferably an olivine-type active material, and in particular, olivine-type lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) has a wide range of potential flatness when metallic lithium is used as a reference electrode, and has little self-discharge. Therefore, it can be used stably as a reference electrode. The charging time for the second positive electrode in initial charging (predetermined time) is set to time LiFePO 4 of the second positive electrode that varies LixFePO 4 (x = 0.95~0.15). For this reason, it can be in the range of potential flatness using the second positive electrode as the reference electrode.
Moreover, the lithium ion battery has only two divided positive electrodes made of the same active material. For this reason, a structure is simple compared with the case where another substance (metallic lithium) is separately used as a reference electrode. For this reason, since it is not necessary to arrange or manufacture a separate electrode dedicated to the reference electrode, the manufacturing is easy and the manufacturing cost is hardly increased.
Further, in an assembled battery in which a plurality of lithium ion batteries are combined in parallel and / or in series, each lithium ion battery constituting the lithium ion battery has a high utilization efficiency of the positive electrode active material. For this reason, not only it becomes large capacity as an assembled battery, but the utilization time can also be lengthened.
In the battery system that combines the lithium ion battery and the charge control device, after the initial charging of the second positive electrode, the switching from the constant current reception to the constant voltage charging is performed thereafter. For this reason, the initial charge to the second positive electrode and the subsequent switching from the constant current power reception to the constant voltage charge can be appropriately executed to perform the charge with high utilization efficiency of the positive electrode active material. Of course, also in this battery system, the initial charge to the second positive electrode can be performed together with the first positive electrode (Embodiment 1), or can be configured to be performed only on the second positive electrode (implementation). Form 2). When it is performed together with the first positive electrode, charging when charging is performed through the first positive electrode after making the second positive electrode the reference electrode, compared with the case where the initial charging is performed only on the second positive electrode accordingly. Time is shortened.
Further, the charge control device can be provided as a single device separately from the lithium ion battery. As a result, it becomes a charger for a lithium ion battery provided alone, and appropriately performs initial charging to the second positive electrode, and then switching from constant current reception to constant voltage charging, and utilization of the positive electrode active material. Efficient charging can be performed.
In the case of the charge control device provided alone, the initial charge to the second positive electrode can be performed together with the first positive electrode (Embodiment 1) or the second positive electrode can be configured only to be performed. (Embodiment 2). When it is performed together with the first positive electrode, charging when charging is performed through the first positive electrode after making the second positive electrode the reference electrode, compared with the case where the initial charging is performed only on the second positive electrode accordingly. Time is shortened.
A vehicle using a lithium ion battery, an assembled battery, or a battery system has a high utilization efficiency of an active material in a secondary battery (lithium ion battery, an assembled battery, or a battery system) as a power source. The mileage can be extended. For this reason, the duration is longer than before and it is suitable for long-distance running.

For example, a wound-type lithium ion battery may be used. In the case of the winding type, the unit cell configuration shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 is prepared. And like the conventional winding type | mold, it can manufacture easily, if it winds up through an insulating layer (it may be either the positive electrode side or the negative electrode side).
