Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a direct fuel cell stack.
A direct fuel cell that supplies liquid fuel such as alcohol directly to the power generation unit does not require an auxiliary device such as a vaporizer or a reformer, and is expected to be used for a small power source of a portable device. For example, a direct methanol supply fuel cell (DMFC) stack has a structure in which a plurality of single cells each having an anode and a cathode are stacked. In the DMFC stack, methanol diluted as liquid fuel is supplied to the anode side, and air is supplied to the cathode side to generate a chemical reaction to generate power. It is necessary to discharge unreacted methanol and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as a reaction product gas from the anode side, and water from the cathode side.
In order to discharge unreacted methanol and CO 2 from the anode side, there is a method in which methanol and CO 2 are mixed in an anode flow path provided in the anode plate on the anode side and discharged from the anode outlet as a gas-liquid two-phase flow. It has been proposed (see, for example, Patent Document 1). In the proposed method, a gas-liquid separator or the like is connected to a flow path connected to the outlet side of the anode to separate the discharged gas-liquid two-phase flow into a gas and a liquid. The separated unreacted methanol is recycled to the anode. The separated gas is released to the atmosphere.
However, when the gas-liquid two-phase flow is circulated through the channel connected to the anode channel and the anode outlet side, the pressure loss of the anode channel may increase. Moreover, since the anode circulation part becomes large by arranging the gas-liquid separator, miniaturization may be difficult.
Therefore, as a method for downsizing a direct fuel cell stack such as DMFC, a gas flow path for gas discharge is provided on the anode plate in addition to the anode flow path for fuel supply, and is adjacent to the diffusion layer of the anode electrode. There has been proposed a structure in which a gas flow path is connected to an arranged lyophobic porous membrane (see, for example, Patent Document 2). By utilizing the lyophobic property of the lyophobic porous membrane, it is possible to prevent the fuel from being mixed into the gas flow path. In addition, CO 2 can be selectively recovered in the gas flow path through the lyophobic porous membrane. Therefore, gas-liquid separation between the fuel and the reaction product gas can be easily realized inside the electromotive unit, so that downsizing can be realized and pressure loss on the anode side can be reduced.
However, when the power generation at the electromotive unit is stopped, the generation of CO 2 is stopped, so that the internal pressures of the gas flow path and the anode are lowered. Therefore, CO 2 remaining in the gas flow path may flow backward to the electromotive part side. If droplets adhere to the gas channel or the outlet end when power generation is stopped, the droplets flow toward the hydrophobic porous membrane while closing the gas channel. As a result, the liquid enters the hydrophobic porous membrane. In particular, in a bipolar structure in which a plurality of single cells are stacked in the vertical direction, a phenomenon in which liquid intrusion concentrates on a single cell in the center of the fuel cell stack is observed. When liquid enters the lyophobic porous membrane, the liquid fuel leaks into the gas flow path through the lyophobic porous membrane while remaining in the liquid state. Thus, gas-liquid separation with a lyophobic porous membrane becomes difficult, and the utilization efficiency of liquid fuel is reduced, which is not desirable.
In order to efficiently collect CO 2 , a plurality of single cells are arranged in a plane so that the anode and the cathode are adjacent to each other with a common electrolyte membrane, and a gas flow path provided between the adjacent anode and cathode Has been proposed (see, for example, Patent Document 3). However, in the proposed planar stack structure, the cathode channel has a large pressure loss, so an air pump is required to supply air to the cathode channel. For this reason, noise is generated by the air pump, and power consumption increases. Further, it is difficult to reduce the size by adding an air pump, and application to a portable device is not desirable.
An object of the present invention is to provide a fuel cell stack that can suppress a decrease in the utilization efficiency of liquid fuel and can be miniaturized.
According to an aspect of the present invention, a fuel cell stack in which a plurality of single cells are stacked, each of the plurality of single cells being provided under the electrolyte membrane, the anode electrode provided on the electrolyte membrane, and the electrolyte membrane. A membrane electrode assembly having a cathode electrode formed thereon, a lyophobic separation membrane in contact with the upper surface of the anode electrode, and an anode channel for supplying liquid fuel to the separation membrane with the lower surface in contact with the upper surface of the separation membrane An anode plate provided with a gas flow path for discharging a generated gas generated by the reaction of liquid fuel at the anode electrode, and a cathode for contacting the upper surface with the lower surface of the cathode electrode and supplying an oxidant to the cathode electrode on the upper surface The cathode plate has a through hole extending from the cathode flow path to the lower surface, and when the single cells are stacked in series, the through hole communicates with the gas flow path of the other single cell. Fuel cells Click is provided.
ADVANTAGE OF THE INVENTION According to this invention, it becomes possible to provide the fuel cell stack which can suppress the fall of the utilization efficiency of liquid fuel and can be reduced in size.

As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a fuel cell

As the

When liquid fuel and air are supplied to each
Methanol and water pass through the
CH3OH + H2O → CO2 + 6H+ + 6e- (1)
CH 3 OH + H 2 O →
The generated hydrogen ions permeate the
(3/2)O2 + 6H+ + 6e- → 3H2O (2)
(3/2) O 2 + 6H + + 6e − → 3H 2 O (2)
CO 2 which is a product gas of the anode reaction shown in the reaction formula (1) diffuses from the
The discharged CO 2 contains unreacted VOC such as methanol together with water vapor. The VOC is removed by the
Thus, in the fuel cell stack according to the embodiment, since the
The through
For example, in the
The CO 2 gas permeability of the
When the supply of liquid fuel is stopped to stop power generation, the generation of CO 2 from the
Here, as shown in FIG. 8, as a comparative example, a
In the fuel cell stack according to the comparative example, as shown in FIG. 10, when power generation is stopped, air flows back to the
In the
On the other hand, in the embodiment, as shown in FIG. 7, when power generation is stopped, a back flow of residual CO 2 and air occurs for each
In contrast to the structure for collecting gas discharges shown in FIG. 9, a structure in which gas is directly exhausted from the anode plate without using the cathode plate is conceivable. However, in this case, CO 2 containing a small amount of methanol vapor is discharged as it is to the outside of the fuel cell stack and cannot be employed. Although it is conceivable to separately provide a methanol vapor removal filter similar to the
