Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a printer, and a facsimile.
In a conventional electrophotographic image forming apparatus, particularly an image forming apparatus for forming a chromatic color image, a two-component developing method in which a nonmagnetic toner and a magnetic carrier are mixed and used as a developer is widely used. Yes. Compared to other currently proposed development methods, the two-component development method has advantages such as image quality stability and device durability, but only the toner is consumed during image formation. Accordingly, it is necessary to appropriately replenish the toner and control the toner density (the mass ratio of the toner to the total mass of the developer) within an appropriate range.
As means for controlling the toner density within an appropriate range, a light detection method, an inductance detection method, a patch detection method, a video count method, and the like have been proposed and implemented.
For example, the light detection method and the inductance detection method are methods in which a sensor is provided in or near the developing device, the toner concentration of the two-component developer is directly detected, and the toner replenishment amount is controlled based on the detection result.
In the patch detection method, the density of a reference image (hereinafter referred to as “patch image”) formed on a photosensitive member is read by an optical sensor provided opposite to the surface of the photosensitive member or intermediate transfer member, and the output value is read. This is a method of controlling the toner replenishment amount based on the above.
The video count method is a method in which an image information signal of an image to be formed is read, a toner amount consumed is predicted from a count number of a signal corresponding to the image density, and toner is replenished based on the predicted value.
In any of these methods, when toner is consumed by image formation, the toner is replenished accordingly, so that the toner in the developer is sequentially replaced by repeating image formation. It will follow.
However, when an image with a small amount of toner consumed (an image with a low image ratio) is continuously output, there is almost no toner replacement, resulting in a longer time for one toner to be present in the developing device. Therefore, it continues to circulate in the developing device for a long time. If the toner stays longer, the toner is repeatedly rubbed and stirred for a long time in the developing device, the shape becomes irregular, the particle size distribution is biased, and the developer is External additives such as silica and titanium oxide particles added for the purpose of improving fluidity are buried in the toner surface or released from the toner. As a result, deterioration such as lowering of the fluidity of the developer occurs, and it becomes difficult to transfer the toner on the image bearing member to the intermediate transfer member, and thus an image having a desired image quality may not be obtained.
In addition, the toner is given an electric charge by rubbing with the carrier, but the electric charge is gradually given by the same toner being repeatedly rubbed. The toner charge amount distribution may become broad (the charge amount range from a low charge amount to a high charge amount becomes wide). For example, as the charge of the toner increases, the amount of toner adhering to the electrostatic latent image formed on the photoreceptor is reduced compared to the initial state in the reverse development, and the toner charge amount distribution is broadened. As a result, the ratio of the toner not transferred to the intermediate transfer member in the toner on the image carrier increases, resulting in deterioration in image quality such as a decrease in density when the image is output and a decrease in graininess in the low density portion. May occur.
As a method for solving such a problem,
By performing such control, when continuously outputting images with a low image ratio, it is possible to prevent deterioration in image quality and image density caused by the fact that toner in the developing device is not replaced. Will be able to.
However, in practice, even when an image with a low image ratio is continuously output, there is often no problem in image depending on the state of the developer at that time.
For example, if an image with a high image ratio was output continuously all the time before an image with a low image ratio was output continuously, the toner in the developing device has been frequently replaced. Most of it is made up of new toner. Even if images with a low image ratio are continuously output from such a state, it takes a longer time than usual when an image problem occurs.
In addition, when the environment in which the image forming apparatus is installed is gradually changed from a low humidity environment to a high humidity environment, the average charge amount of the toner gradually decreases, and accordingly, developability gradually increases. It will go up. In such a case, even if an image with a low image ratio is continuously output, because the developability is improved, the image quality and the image density are not easily lowered even when the toner is deteriorated.
In other words, even if an image with a low image ratio is continuously output, there may be no problem in the image because the state of the developer varies depending on how the apparatus is used and the environment. It will be.
At that time, if the toner is forcibly consumed only based on the judgment criterion that an image with a low image ratio has been continuously output, the toner is forcibly consumed even though no problem occurs on the image. Therefore, there is a possibility that problems such as an increase in useless toner consumption, an increase in running cost, and an increase in downtime for forced consumption may occur.
Therefore, the present invention accurately determines whether or not to execute the forced toner consumption mode, and suppresses a decrease in image quality and image density and reduces excessive toner consumption and useless downtime. It is an object of the present invention to provide an image forming apparatus that can be used.

That is, the above problems are solved by the following inventions (1) to (7).
(1) An image forming apparatus according to the present invention is formed on an image carrier, latent image forming means for forming an electrostatic latent image corresponding to an image information signal on the image carrier, and the image carrier. And

According to the present invention, the control means determines whether to execute the forced consumption mode based not only on the calculation result by the image ratio calculation means but also on the calculation result and the detection result by the image density detection means. For example, even when the image ratio is low, the forced consumption mode is executed only when it is necessary to forcibly transfer the toner in consideration of the detection result of the image density detection means, and the toner Can be transferred (exhaled).
Unlike the case where the developing device provided in the image forming apparatus transfers the toner to the image area by transferring the toner in the two-component developer to the non-image area on the image carrier when executing the forced consumption mode, The influence on the image area due to toner transfer can be prevented.
When the control unit included in the image forming apparatus executes the forced consumption mode, the toner consumption is controlled by controlling the toner consumption based on the calculation result of the image ratio calculation unit and the detection result of the image density detection unit. The amount can be suitable.
By controlling the toner replenishment amount replenished in the developing device based on the density of the same reference image as the reference image used for controlling the toner consumption amount in the forced consumption mode, the replenishment toner amount Therefore, the control time for forming the reference image can be omitted, and the control can be simplified.
The control means controls the toner density target value in the toner density detection means based on the density of the same reference image as the reference image used for controlling the toner consumption amount in the forced consumption mode. Since it is commonly used for controlling the toner density target value and for controlling the toner consumption, the control time for forming the reference image can be omitted, and the control can be simplified.
When the control unit executes the forced consumption mode, the density of the toner image formed on the intermediate transfer member by toner transfer is detected by the image density detection unit, and the detection result exceeds a predetermined value. By ending the forced consumption mode when it is detected, the forced consumption mode is ended when the density of the toner image formed on the image carrier by toner transfer exceeds a predetermined value. Consumption can be made suitable.
By integrally supporting at least one unit selected from an image carrier and a charging unit, a developing unit, and a cleaning unit and making it a process cartridge that can be attached to and detached from the main body of the image forming apparatus, a user or serviceman can use a cartridge. The image carrier and at least one means selected from a charging means, a developing means, and a cleaning means can be exchanged together.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged view of the developing device in FIG. FIG. 3 is a flowchart for controlling the toner density. The image forming apparatus shown in FIG. 1 is an electrophotographic printer.

The developing
The developer is composed mainly of, for example, a non-magnetic toner in which a pigment is dispersed in a polyester resin and a magnetic carrier in which ferrite or magnetite is coated with a silicone resin. The developer is stirred in the developing
Consumed toner is replenished into the agitating
When the image forming operation is repeated, the toner in the developer in the developing device 4 is consumed, and the toner concentration of the developer decreases. Therefore, the toner concentration is controlled within a desired range by appropriately replenishing the toner. There is a need to. In the present invention, a density signal of a reference toner image (patch image) as a reference image formed on the intermediate transfer member is detected by a density detection sensor (image density detection means), and this density signal and an initial reference stored in advance are stored. A toner replenishment control method (patch detection method) is used in which the rotation time of the toner replenishment screw is controlled based on the comparison result.
When patch detection is executed, an electrostatic latent image of a reference toner image having a certain area is formed on the
However, when toner replenishment control is performed based on the density of the reference toner image as described above, the density of the reference toner image is lowered even when the toner charge amount is increased from the initial state. Since the toner is replenished even if the density is not low, the toner density of the developer may increase excessively. When the toner density rises excessively, toner scattering occurs and the inside of the image forming apparatus is contaminated, or the driving torque increases due to an excessive amount of developer, and the developing device 4 is locked.
Therefore, in the present embodiment, a toner concentration monitoring sensor (toner concentration detecting means) 22 based on an inductance detection method is provided in the stirring
As the toner in the developing device 4 is consumed by the image forming operation, the density of the reference toner image gradually decreases, so that Vsp−Vref <0 and a signal is issued to rotate the toner supply screw. When the toner consumption is large, the difference between Vsp and Vref is increased, so that the rotation time of the toner replenishing screw is lengthened, and more toner corresponding to the consumed amount is replenished into the developing device 4. .
On the other hand, when the toner consumption is small, the difference between Vsp and Vref is small, so the amount of toner replenished in the developing device 4 is also small. In such a case, the toner in the developing device 4 is not replaced, and stirring and rubbing are repeated many times in the developing device 4, so that the shape becomes irregular or an external additive is embedded in the surface. As a result, the fluidity is lowered or the battery is excessively charged.
Therefore, in the present invention, such toner is forcibly consumed to forcibly replace the toner, to prevent toner deterioration, and to control image quality deterioration. The control flow will be described with reference to FIG.
In the toner replenishment control described above, the density signal Vsp of the detected reference toner image is first compared with the initial reference signal Vref (S1). If Vsp−Vref <0 (YES in S1), the density lower limit value Vlimit ( It is compared with Vlimit <Vref (S2). When Vsp ≧ Vlimit (NO in S2), the normal toner replenishment operation is performed (S3), the toner replenishment amount is determined from the difference between Vsp and Vref, and toner replenishment is executed. On the other hand, if Vsp <Vlimit in S2 (YES in S2), the above-described toner deterioration can be considered as one of the causes, so the average image ratio in the image forming operation performed in the past in the next step is calculated. (S4). The average image ratio is calculated as follows.
When image formation starts, image data input to the CPU 30 (see FIG. 1) is read, and the image ratio of the image is calculated by the
It is determined whether or not the calculated average image ratio is below a predetermined value (2% in this embodiment) (S5). If it is below (YES in S5), the reference toner image density is determined. It is determined that the excessive decrease is due to toner deterioration, and a predetermined amount of forced toner consumption and replenishment operation are performed (S7).
In this embodiment, an electrostatic latent image is formed in the entire axial direction of the
Here, the non-image area means an area other than the area corresponding to the sheet for image formation in the entire surface of the image carrier. Specifically, for the four sides of the sheet relating to image formation, the downstream side in the sheet conveyance direction of the two sides in the direction orthogonal to the sheet conveyance direction (sheet width direction) is the leading end, and the upstream side is the rear side. When the left side is the left end and the right side is the right end of the two sides along the sheet conveying direction, the left side is the right side and the right side is the right side. The area outside the left edge of the sheet along the area, the area outside the right edge of the sheet, and the rear edge of the preceding sheet and the succeeding sheet when performing continuous image formation on a plurality of sheets. An area between the leading edge (so-called paper gap) and an area obtained by extending the gap between the paper sheets in the sheet width direction. Therefore, for example, when the sheet for image formation is a public postcard, a wide non-image area is formed on the surface of the image carrier on the outside of the left end and the outside of the right end of the public postcard. It will be. With this configuration, unlike the case where toner is transferred to the image area, the influence of the toner transfer on the image area can be prevented.
The toner image developed as described above is removed by the
Further, when the average image ratio is 2% or more in S5 (NO in S5), the excessive density reduction is detected by a cause other than the toner deterioration (for example, the toner
In this embodiment, toner supply control is performed by a patch detection method, and whether or not forced toner consumption is necessary is determined based on a reference toner image used for toner supply control. However, a light detection method or an inductance detection method is used. The toner replenishment control may be performed, and the necessity of forced toner consumption may be determined together with a reference toner image used as a means for correcting the density target value.
By performing the control as described above, it is possible to prevent toner deterioration caused by a low average image ratio by forcibly replacing the toner, and furthermore, only when this toner replacement operation is really necessary. Since it can be performed appropriately, it is possible to provide an image forming apparatus in which wasteful toner consumption and excessive downtime do not occur.

A control flow in the present embodiment will be described with reference to a flowchart shown in FIG. Note that the configurations of the image forming apparatus and the developing device 4 in the present embodiment are the same as those in the first embodiment, and depending on the density detection result and average image ratio of the reference toner image used for normal toner replenishment control, The same applies to the control for determining whether or not to execute toner consumption (forced consumption mode).
The present embodiment is characterized in that when execution of forced toner consumption is selected, the amount of toner to be forcibly consumed is determined based on the above-described reference toner image density detection result and average image ratio. .
Also in this embodiment, forced toner consumption is executed when it is detected that the density signal Vsp of the reference toner image used for toner replenishment control is below the density lower limit value Vlimit and the average image ratio is below 2%. The control flow is the same as that in the first embodiment (S11 to S16). That is, each step of S11 to S16 in FIG. 4 corresponds to S1 to S6 in FIG. 3 in this order.
In the first embodiment, the toner consumption amount (toner discharge amount) of toner consumed in forced toner consumption and the toner replenishment amount of toner to be replenished, that is, the toner replacement amount, are determined based only on the average image ratio. For example, the toner amount is equivalent to an average image ratio of 2%.
However, even if the average image ratio of the formed images is the same, as described above, it is common that there is a difference in the degree of deterioration in image quality and the degree of reduction in image density depending on the state of the developer at that time. . For example, when the toner degradation level is relatively small and the density signal Vsp of the reference toner image is slightly lower than Vlimit, and when the toner degradation level is relatively large and Vsp is significantly lower than Vimit, If the toner with the same average image ratio of 2% is replaced, when the toner deterioration degree is relatively small, the toner replacement amount becomes excessive, and wasteful toner consumption increases. Conversely, when the toner deterioration degree is relatively large There is a risk that the toner replacement amount becomes insufficient, and the image quality and image density after replacement are insufficiently restored.
Rd=A×(Vlimit−Vsp)/Vlimit……(1)
Therefore, in this embodiment, when execution of forced toner consumption is selected, the density reduction degree Rd is calculated as follows from Vsp and Vlimit (S17 in FIG. 4).
Rd = A × (Vlimit−Vsp) / Vlimit (1)
Here, A is a constant, and an optimum value is set for each image forming apparatus. Next, the Rd is weighted with respect to the toner amount corresponding to the average image ratio of 2%, thereby determining the toner amount to be consumed (toner consumption amount) and the toner amount to be replenished (toner replenishment amount) (S18). ) Based on the determined toner amount, forced toner consumption and replenishment operation are executed (S19).
Thus, by weighting the toner amount obtained from the average image ratio with the density reduction degree Rd, it is less when the toner deterioration degree is relatively small, and more when the toner deterioration degree is relatively large. Can be replaced.
As described above, by performing the control as in the present embodiment, it is possible to replace the optimum toner amount according to the degree of toner deterioration, so that unnecessary toner consumption and excessive downtime occur. In addition, it is possible to prevent the image quality from being insufficiently restored due to an insufficient toner replacement amount.
<
The control flow in the present embodiment will be described with reference to the flowchart of FIG. Note that the configurations of the image forming apparatus and the developing device 4 in this embodiment are the same as those in the first and second embodiments, and depending on the density detection result and average image ratio of the reference toner image used for normal toner replenishment control. Similarly, control is performed to determine whether or not to execute forced toner consumption.
In the present embodiment, during the forced toner consumption operation, the density of the toner image formed for the forced toner consumption is detected by the density detection sensor, and the forced toner consumption is terminated based on the detection result. It is a feature.
Also in this embodiment, forced toner consumption is executed when it is detected that the density signal Vsp of the reference toner image used for toner replenishment control is below the lower limit value Vlimit and the average image ratio is below 2%. This control flow is the same as in the first and second embodiments (S21 to S26). That is, each step of S21 to S26 in FIG. 5 corresponds to S1 to S6 in FIG. 3 and S11 to S16 in FIG. 4 in this order.
In the first and second embodiments, the amount of toner to be forcibly consumed (toner consumption) is determined based on the average image ratio calculated in advance (2% in the first embodiment) and the density signal of the reference toner image. However, these are only predicted values, and there are many cases where variations occur in the restoration level of image quality and image density after actual consumption and replenishment of toner. For example, when the amount determined based on the average image ratio or the density signal of the reference toner image is replaced, if the image density after replacement is excessive, the replacement amount is excessive, and conversely the image density after replacement is If it has not recovered sufficiently, it can be said that the amount of replacement is too small. This can occur due to, for example, variations in toner replenishment control.
Therefore, in this embodiment, when execution of forced toner consumption is selected (S27), forced toner consumption is performed by forming a toner image having the same density as the reference toner image used for the determination. The density of the toner image formed in order to forcibly consume the toner is detected at any time by the density detection sensor (S28).
The toner image formed for forced toner consumption has the same density (for example, an initial density of 1.0% by mass) as the reference toner image used for toner supply control and determination of necessity of forced toner consumption. A latent image is formed in the entire region of the
The density signal Vsp of the detected toner image is compared with Vlimit (S29). If Vsp is lower than Vlimit (Vsp <Vlimit: NO in S29), forced toner consumption and supply operation are continued, and Vsp is equal to or higher than Vlimit. When it is detected that (Vsp ≧ Vlimit) (YES in S29), the forced toner consumption and the replenishment operation are terminated. In this way, by monitoring the density of the toner image formed for toner consumption as needed, the forced toner consumption operation can be properly terminated when the image density is restored to a necessary and sufficient density. .
As described above, by performing the control as in the present embodiment, the toner is replaced while checking the actual image density recovery level, so that the optimum toner amount corresponding to the actual image is replaced. Therefore, wasteful toner consumption and excessive downtime are not generated, and it is possible to prevent the image quality from being insufficiently restored due to an insufficient amount of toner replacement.
In the above description, the case where the toner is transferred to the non-image area on the image carrier when executing the forced toner consumption mode has been described as an example. However, the present invention is not limited to this and the image carrier is not limited thereto. You may make it transfer to the image area | region on a body.
