Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus such as a printer that forms an image on a medium.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, attempts have been made to automatically set a printer by reading information on media used for printing, such as media size and registration information, and color patches, from the media itself.
For example,
However, as the usage of readers is diversified, there are cases where it is desired to perform reading even in a situation where contamination easily occurs. For example, detection of the edge of the media during the print sequence. During printing, the ink mist is scattered so much that if the shutter is opened and reading is performed at that time, it is inevitable that dirt will adhere. Therefore, depending on the application, maintenance at a reasonable frequency is necessary.
The present invention has been made in view of recognition of the above-described problems.
An object of the present invention is to provide an image forming apparatus that suppresses the progress of dirt adhesion to a reader more than ever and has excellent maintainability.
The present invention that solves the above-described problems is an image forming apparatus that forms an image on a medium, and includes a reading window and a light-transmitting shutter that opens and closes the reading window, and receives information from the medium through the reading window. A reader for reading, and switching means for switching between a first mode for reading with the shutter opened and a second mode for reading through the shutter with the shutter closed according to the information to be read. It is characterized by this.
According to the present invention, it is possible to provide an image forming apparatus that suppresses the progress of dirt adhesion to a reader more than before and has excellent maintainability.

However, the constituent elements described in this embodiment are merely examples, and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention only to them.
Hereinafter, an ink jet printer which is an example of an image forming apparatus will be described. The scope of application of the present invention is not limited to this. For example, various types of images such as office use and home use equipment such as printers, copiers, facsimiles, multifunction devices such as electrophotographic system, thermal system, and dot impact system, and commercial and industrial printing devices. It can also be applied to a forming apparatus.

The
FIG. 2 shows a block diagram of the reader. The
As the
The
The
The
FIG. 3 is a block diagram showing a configuration of a controller that processes input / output signals of the reader and controls the entire printer. The

FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the
The opening / closing operation of the
First, the operation of opening the
Next, the operation for closing the
The
<Example of closed mode>
As an example of reading in the closed mode, there is an edge detection of a medium. This detects the position information of the edge of the medium from the change in the intensity of the reflected light from the surface of the medium on the platen. The reason for performing in the closed mode is as follows. One is that it is sufficient to be able to identify the difference in reflection intensity between the surface of the platen and the media, and so high detection accuracy is not required. The second reason is that it is desirable to prevent the ink mist from entering from the reading window because the ink mist scatters strongly during printing.
Edge detection of the medium 106 is performed by calculating the difference between the outputs of the
When the
Thus, the absolute position of the medium 106 and the width of the medium 106 are obtained. The controller uses this information to set image forming conditions, that is, a print range. As a result, it is possible to prevent printing that does not protrude from the medium even when the marginless print does not have a margin around it or when the user sets the size of the medium larger than the original by mistake. This is very effective for preventing contamination of the platen. Further, it is possible to prevent adhesion of ink mist and fluff on the surface of the media to the LEDs and photodiodes in the
<Example of open mode>
As an example of reading in the open mode, there is color patch density detection for color calibration. When the color patch is irradiated with light, the amount of light absorbed depends on the color density, and this is reflected in the reflection intensity, and density information is detected. The reason for performing in the open mode is as follows. One is that high detection accuracy is required for color density detection. The second reason is that since the reading operation is performed after the color patch is dried, there is little concern about contamination due to ink mist scattering.
First, the medium 106 is conveyed, and a predetermined area is positioned on the
Thereafter, the
In reading, first, the
Assuming that the reflection intensity Vr in the area without the patch on the medium 106 and the reflection intensity Vp at the patch, the relative color density D in the medium 106 is obtained by the following equation.
D=log10(Vr/Vp)
D = log 10 (Vr / Vp)
Since the color characteristics to be printed differ depending on the type of
Then, the controller performs color calibration based on the color density of the patch, and sets image forming conditions so that the printed image has the original density. If the patch is also a mark for print alignment, print alignment is set from the patch detection position.
As described above, in accordance with the information to be read, an open mode (first mode) in which reading is performed with the shutter opened and a closed mode (second mode) in which reading is performed with the shutter closed are switched. . As a result, the progress of dirt on the reader can be minimized, and the apparatus can be excellent in maintenance such as maintenance effort, frequency, and cost.
By the way, with the long-term use of the printer, it is inevitable that ink mist or the like adheres to the
Dirt such as ink adhering to the
FIG. 8 is a flowchart showing the operation sequence of the maintenance operation. The maintenance operation is performed at a timing that does not make the user wait, such as after the end of a series of print jobs.
When the maintenance operation is started, the
If the media is appropriate, proceed to the next step and move the
Next, the
Using the values stored in the
