Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image signal processing apparatus and an image signal processing method that are applicable to various devices that handle image signals and that perform error diffusion on the image signals.
Conventionally, it has been proposed and put to practical use to perform error diffusion on an image signal (video signal). The error diffusion process is a technique for improving the quality of an image without increasing the number of gradations by performing error diffusion and performing pseudo halftone expression when processing such as reduction of gradation of an image signal is performed.
The details of the error diffusion process will be described in the section “Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention” which will be described later.
Patent Document 1 describes an example of a configuration for performing error diffusion processing.
By the way, when error diffusion processing is performed on an image signal, the recognition rate of the entire screen obtained from the image signal is improved, but the S / N of the entire screen is reduced, and the screen is gritty like noise is mixed depending on the screen. Screen may appear.
Further, the portion where noise in the screen is well recognized is a dark portion where the decrease in S / N is most easily recognized, and is a flat portion where there is no change in the luminance of the image.
In the conventional error diffusion processing, uniform error diffusion is performed on the input image signal in accordance with preset conditions regardless of the characteristics of the image. In some cases, it may appear that noise has occurred.
For example, although it is an image signal of high-quality movie content without noise, there is a possibility that unnecessary error diffusion processing is performed and image quality deterioration is caused.
The present invention has been made in view of the above points, and an object of the present invention is to enable good error diffusion without causing noticeable noise.
According to the present invention, the input image signal is subjected to a predetermined analysis for each region of the image of each frame, and based on the analysis result, it is determined whether or not to perform error diffusion processing in each region of the image signal. Then, based on the result of the analysis, error diffusion is performed on the area of the input image signal that is determined to be subjected to error diffusion.
By doing in this way, it can be judged whether it is a part suitable for error diffusion, such as a field where noise is conspicuous by performing error diffusion, for example. Based on the determination, the error diffusion process is not performed on the region that is not suitable for error diffusion, so that noise does not stand out due to error diffusion, and highly accurate error diffusion can be performed.
According to the present invention, the error diffusion process is not performed on the region that is not suitable for error diffusion, so that noise does not stand out due to error diffusion, and highly accurate error diffusion can be performed. As a result, it contributes to higher image quality.

By inputting a pixel signal to the error
The error diffusion processing configuration shown in FIG. 3 shows an example, and other conventionally proposed error diffusion processing may be applied.
Next, an example of the error diffusion processing state in the

The control
In this way, the analysis result is evaluated (step S18), and it is determined whether or not it is determined that the pattern, flat portion, or edge portion is suitable for error diffusion (step S19). If it is determined that the pattern is a pattern, a flat portion, or an edge portion, the error
Then, it is determined whether there is an input of a video signal of the next frame (step S21). If there is an input of a video signal of the next frame, the process returns to step S12. If there is no video signal input for the next frame, the process is terminated.
[Description of each analysis process]
Next, examples of analysis processing states executed by the
First, an example of performing histogram analysis will be described with reference to FIG.
In the case of this histogram analysis, as shown in FIG. 5, the pixel value of each pixel in a region of predetermined vertical and horizontal pixels (here, 21 pixels) centered on the target pixel P1 is determined in predetermined steps (here, 16 steps). ) And determine how many pixels exist for each of the 16 stages. When the histogram value at the stage including the target pixel P1 is smaller than the histogram values at the other stages, it is determined that it is appropriate for the target pixel P1 to perform error diffusion.
Next, an example in which black / dark area analysis is performed will be described with reference to FIG.
In the case of this black / dark part analysis, as shown in FIG. 6, all the pixels in the region of predetermined vertical and horizontal pixels (here, 9 pixels each) centering on the target pixel P2 are equal to or less than a threshold value determined to be black. It is judged whether it is the value of. For example, when the pixel value is 8 bits and takes a value in the range of 0 to 255, when all the pixels in the region have pixel values from 0 to 20, it is determined that the pixel is black or dark.
Further, when it is determined that the pixel is black or dark by the determination of the nine pixels, a block of nine pixels around it is created as shown in FIG. 6, and the same determination as the determination in the central block is performed. The judgment value of the peripheral block is compared with the judgment value of the central block. In the comparison, it is determined whether the region is black or dark, and if it is determined that the region is not black or dark, it is determined that the possibility of error diffusion is high.
Next, an example in which strong edge analysis and medium edge analysis are performed will be described with reference to FIG.
The range shown in FIG. 7A shows a search range in which edge analysis is performed around the target pixel P10. FIGS. 7B, 7C, and 7D are obtained by extracting a part of the search range in which the edge analysis is performed. The edge analysis is an analysis in which a pixel value has a large change and a part recognized as an edge on the image is searched.
First, as shown in FIG. 7B, the edge direction is searched in a block of 9 pixels in total of 3 pixels in the vertical and horizontal directions centering on the target pixel P10. In the edge direction search process, the pixel value of the target pixel P10 is set to a0, and the pixel values of the surrounding eight pixels are set to a1 to a8. At this time, the difference between each of the surrounding pixel values a1 to a8 and the target pixel value a0 is converted into an absolute value to obtain eight absolute values abs1 to abs8.
reg_cnt_area0>=cnt_area0
Further, a difference threshold sa_area0 and a count number cnt_area0 are set from the outside for determination of eight absolute values.
For this value,
abs1> sa_area0
abs2> sa_area0
...
abs8> sa_area0
A number satisfying the condition is defined as a count number cnt_area0.
Here, the difference threshold value sa_area0 and the count number cnt_area0 are changed depending on the strong edge / medium edge determination. In the case of a strong edge, the threshold value is increased and the count number is decreased. In the case of the middle edge, the threshold value is decreased and the count number is increased.
Based on these results, a determination process as to whether or not the edge is a strong edge and a determination as to whether or not it is a middle edge is performed using cnt_area0 used for absolute value determination and a preset tuning parameter reg_cnt_area0. That is,
reg_cnt_area0> = cnt_area0
If it satisfies, it is determined that the edge is a medium edge or a strong edge, and it is determined that the target pixel is highly likely to be subjected to error diffusion.
As shown in FIG. 7C, the strong edge analysis and the middle edge analysis described so far are 9 pixels each having three vertical and horizontal pixels centered on four pixels P11, P12, P13, and P14 adjacent to the target pixel P10. Similarly, the edge analysis is also performed in the four blocks constituted by
Further, as shown in FIG. 7D, edge analysis is similarly performed in each block composed of nine pixels each having three vertical and horizontal pixels with the peripheral pixels P21 to P36 as the center.
Next, an example of performing texture analysis will be described with reference to FIG.
In this example, calculation results b1, b2, b3,..., B9 are obtained for a total of 9 blocks of 3 pixels × 3 pixels surrounding the target pixel P40 and 8 blocks adjacent to each other. When the determination formula including the central block satisfies a certain condition in the vertical direction, the horizontal direction, and the diagonal direction, it is determined to be a texture, and it is determined that the target pixel is highly likely to be subjected to error diffusion.
The analysis results shown in FIGS. 5 to 8 are comprehensively determined, and the control
As described above, by controlling the execution status of error diffusion processing in units of pixels or areas within one frame based on a predetermined analysis result of an image, error diffusion at a place where noise is likely to occur due to error diffusion Is suppressed and a good error-diffused video signal is obtained.
