This type of prior art terminal is customarily used to accommodate within the connector housing, with the contact surface located on the connecting line. In practice, the accommodation of the terminals in the housing, ie the arrangement of the contact surfaces, is determined by the orientation of the fixed area.

The contact surface provided by this type of terminal is discontinuous due to the coupling line, which is detrimental to the conductive performance.

An object of the present invention is to solve this problem and to provide a male electrical terminal with improved conductive performance. The terminals are not affected by the orientation of the fixing area in the connector housing and do not require improvement of the fixing area.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a male electrical terminal of the type described above, in which the intermediate region is twisted about the longitudinal axis and the connecting line is angularly offset from the contact surface about the longitudinal axis. Yes.

The present invention also relates to a process for manufacturing such terminals, and electrical connectors including such terminals.

The invention will be better understood upon reading the following description of one embodiment of the invention, given as a non-limiting example.

A male electrical terminal according to the present invention is shown in FIGS.

This male electric terminal 1 is a type suitable for being crimped to one end of an electric cable and accommodated in an insulating housing (not shown) of a connector for a plurality of circuits.

More specifically, this terminal is suitable for electrical connectors used in automotive applications.

The male terminal 1 is suitable for fitting with the female terminal 3 shown in FIGS.

The male terminal 1 extends along the longitudinal axis X, and the axis X also represents the fitting direction attached to the terminal 1. The X axis is directed from the male terminal 1 toward the female terminal 3 so as to be in a fitted state.

The phrase direction or position used in this description and relative to the male terminal 1, in particular the phrase “front” or “front” refers to this mating axis X.

The male terminal 1 is integrally formed from a metal sheet (or blank), and is basically formed by a series of punching and bending operations.

The male terminal 1 includes a crimping region 5, a fixing region 7, and a contact region 9 that continuously extend from the rear to the front along the longitudinal axis X. The male terminal also comprises an intermediate region 11 extending between the fixed region 7 and the contact region 9.

1 and 2, the male terminal 1 is connected to a metal strip 12 and is integrally formed with a metal sheet. Of course, this strip 12 is not part of the terminals, but is customarily used to feed blanks through the mold during the manufacturing process and to connect together a series of processed terminals.

The crimping region 5 is substantially U-shaped in a cross section (a plane perpendicular to the X axis), and is symmetric with respect to the axial plane P. The plane P is assumed to be vertical in the following.

The above description of the crimping region 5 and the more general description of the region 5 shows the initial state of the terminal, and is the state before the terminal is crimped to the wire.

In other embodiments, the crimp area may be replaced with other suitable types of wire connection areas.

The fixed region 7 is substantially box-shaped (parallelepiped) and includes four side walls extending in the longitudinal axis direction. The side walls are formed by two opposing vertical walls 13 and two opposing horizontal walls 15. is there.

The securing region 7 is provided for being housed and secured in the chamber of the insulating housing of the electrical connector. For this purpose, the fixing area 7 comprises a rear stop 17 provided for being engaged by a locking member such as a flexible arm of the connector housing.

The locking member is partly shown in the cross-sectional view of FIG. 3 and is indicated by reference numeral 21 and is in a position engaged with the stop end 17. FIG. 3 shows a state in which the male terminal 1 is completely inserted and in a fixed position in the connector housing (shown by the locking arm 21).

In an alternative embodiment (not shown), the securing area may be a recess or window formed therein, by means of the protruding teeth of the locking arm for securing the terminal in the individual receiving chamber. Note that they may be engaged.

In the embodiment shown, the fixing area 7 is also adapted to guide and guide the terminal 1 as it is inserted into the housing. For this purpose, the fixing region 7 is provided with a guide and guide member 23 which protrudes from one side wall 13 and is integrally formed by punching.

The contact area 9 is formed in a pin shape and has a substantially rectangular outer shape in the cross section. As shown in more detail in FIG. 4, taking into account the center line 25 of the metal sheet (dashed line in FIG. 4), the pin 9 is generally U-shaped in the cross section and is longitudinally oriented. It is symmetrical with respect to the horizontal plane Q (see FIGS. 1 and 2).

The pin 9 is formed by bending a corresponding portion of the metal sheet along a folding line along the longitudinal axis, and the other is overlaid on the substantially U-shaped branch portions 27A and 27B.

Accordingly, one side surface of the substantially rectangular pin 9 is formed by integrating a face that is initially opposed to the end of 29A, 29B, which is a matching part of the metal sheet, and the faces 29A, 29B are Bonded along a longitudinal bond line 30.

The contact area 9 forms a contact surface 33 (see FIGS. 3 and 4), and the complementary contact surface of the complementary female terminal 3 at the coupling position of the contact area as shown in FIGS. Is engaged by.

As shown in FIG. 1, the intermediate region 11 connects the contact region 9 and the fixed region 7, but is twisted about the X axis. In other words, the intermediate region is permanently deformed from a folded state by twisting around the X axis and has a substantially symmetrical surface, which is perpendicular and identical to the surface P.

In these states, the symmetric surface Q of the pin 9 is angularly moved around the longitudinal axis X direction from the symmetric surface P of the crimping region, and more specifically, is orthogonal to the surface P.

Due to the permanent deformation of the intermediate region 11, the connecting line 30 is angularly moved around the X axis from the contact surface 33 and provided on the outer surfaces of the branch portions 27 </ b> A and 27 </ b> B.

In the example shown, the movement angle is equal to 90 °.

3 and 4, it is noted that the female terminal 3 has a box-shaped body 41 and includes a lower longitudinal wall 43 and a rear end 47. The female terminal 3 also includes a flexible contact blade 49 that extends into the body 41.

The wall 43 and the blade 49 form a contact surface of the female terminal, applies a contact pressure between the wall 43 and the blade 49, and suitably receives the pin 9.

The terminal body 41 is accommodated in the chamber of the mating connector housing and fixed there by a locking member 51 engaged with the rear end portion 47. It resembles the individual functions of the locking member 21 and the end 17.

3 and 4, the individual directions of the terminals 1 and 3 are such that the contact blade 49 and the lower wall 43 extend in a substantially horizontal direction, and the contact surface 33 is the outer surface of the branches 27A and 27B. It is made to extend horizontally.

In such a configuration, one relative direction of the terminals is pressed by the locking members 17, 21, 47 and 51 of both terminals 1 and 3 and the contact surface 33 is not intersected by the coupling line 30. This is preferred because the contact surface 33 is arranged on a different surface of the pin 9.

This is due to the torsional deformation of the intermediate region 11 and provides improved continuity of the contact surface 33.

Referring to FIG. 5, the manufacturing process of the male terminal shown in FIGS.

In fact, FIG. 5 shows the male terminal of the present invention in a conventional state during the manufacturing process, and the terminal in this state is indicated by reference numeral 1 '.

In the first continuous step of the manufacturing process, the blank is stamped and bent to form an untwisted terminal 1 ', which is a crimping area 5, a box-shaped fixing area 7, U It has a letter-shaped contact area 9 and an intermediate area that is not deformed (not twisted around the X axis). The undeformed intermediate region is indicated by reference numeral 11 '.

Since the terminal 1 'is a conventional terminal, the first process for manufacturing the terminal 1' is not described in further detail, and these first steps are also conventional.

FIG. 5 shows that the terminal 1 ′ not torsionally deformed has a generally symmetric outer shape with respect to the axial vertical plane P, and therefore the coupling line 30 is arranged in this symmetric plane P. ing.

In a further step of the manufacturing process, the terminal 1 ′ is twisted in the intermediate region around the longitudinal axis X, so that the pin 9 is at an offset angle of 90 ° with respect to the fixing part 7. In this twisting (or twisting) step, the ends 29A, 29B are arranged in a vertical plane, the plane being parallel to the plane of symmetry of the crimping area 5 and perpendicular to the stop end 17 of the fixing area 7.

Therefore, the symmetry plane Q of the contact area 9 is perpendicular to the symmetry plane P of the crimping area 5.
