Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an ink jet recording apparatus and a recovery of a recording head in which ink is forcibly discharged from the nozzle and recovered in order to recover the ejection performance of the nozzle with respect to the recording head having a nozzle for discharging ink. It relates to devices.
2. Description of the Related Art Inkjet recording apparatuses (inkjet recording apparatuses) that form images by ejecting ink (ink droplets) onto a recording medium from ink ejection ports of a plurality of nozzles formed on a recording head are widely used. As a technique for ejecting ink droplets from the ink ejection port of the recording head, thermal energy corresponding to the drive pulse is supplied to the ink in the nozzle formed in the recording head to generate bubbles due to film boiling, and these bubbles cause the nozzles to A technique for ejecting ink droplets is known. In an ink jet recording apparatus using such an ink ejection technique, a large number of nozzles are arranged in a recording head, and a large number of ink droplets corresponding to an image to be recorded are ejected from the plurality of nozzles onto the recording medium. Record.
In the ink jet recording apparatus as described above, in order to improve the image recording speed, a large number of nozzles including ink discharge ports and ink flow paths communicating with the ink discharge ports are stacked in a direction perpendicular to the recording medium conveyance direction. One using an arrayed line head is known. A recording apparatus (line printer) using this line head discharges ink from ink discharge ports of a plurality of nozzles in accordance with conveyance of a recording medium, and simultaneously records one line.
In general, current recording apparatuses are required to form high-quality images with high image quality at high speed. However, these requirements are satisfied by using the above-mentioned line printer and other ink-jet recording apparatuses. be able to. Further, the ink jet recording apparatus has an advantage that it can perform very stable image recording because the recording head and the recording medium are not in contact with each other during image recording.
By the way, in the above-described ink jet recording apparatus, there may be a problem that, during recording or standby, bubbles are mixed in the ink in the vicinity of the nozzles, the ink droplet ejection performance is lowered, and the recording quality is lowered. In order to solve such problems, the cap is closely attached to the print head, and a constant negative pressure is generated in the cap by a pump so that bubbles existing in the nozzle are discharged together with the ink. A recovery operation is being performed to restore performance. Regarding such a recovery operation, Patent Document 1 discloses a technique for more reliably discharging bubbles adhering to the nozzle by opening the cap to the atmosphere a plurality of times during ink suction by the cap.
However, in the recovery operation as described above, not only air bubbles but also ink in the nozzles is discharged, and a large amount of ink may adhere to the surface on which the ink discharge ports are formed (hereinafter referred to as discharge port surface). In this case, the ink droplets ejected from the ink ejection ports are affected by the ink adhering to the ejection port surface, the ejection direction is deviated, the landing position on the recording medium is deviated, and the image quality may be degraded. In addition, if a large amount of ink is left on the ejection port surface, paper dust generated from the recording medium or dust present in the recording device will adhere to the ejection port surface, causing a deviation in the ejection direction of the ink droplets. Or non-ejection (a state in which ink cannot be ejected) occurs, which also causes a reduction in image quality.
As a technique for solving the problems as described above, a technique is disclosed in which after the ink in the nozzle is sucked, the discharge port surface is wiped (hereinafter referred to as wiping) with a wiper blade made of an elastic material and cleaned (patent). Reference 2). The ink jet recording apparatus includes, for example, four recording heads for forming a color image by ejecting four colors of ink. In this case, one wiper blade corresponds to one recording head, and the discharge port surfaces of the four recording heads are wiped by separate wiper blades.
After the ink is sucked and discharged from the nozzle as described above, when the discharge port surface of each recording head is wiped with a wiper blade, a large amount of discharged ink remains on the discharge port surface. Ink may not be wiped off, and a considerable amount of ink may remain on the ejection port surface even after wiping. Such residual ink is not preferable because it causes ejection failure as described above.
Therefore, in the conventional ink jet recording apparatus, the residual ink amount on the ejection port surface is also suppressed before wiping by using the negative pressure generated in the nozzle. That is, normally, the inside of the nozzle of the recording head is maintained at a constant negative pressure because it is necessary to form a meniscus at the discharge port. For this reason, after the ink is discharged from the nozzle, a wait time is provided before wiping is performed, and the extra ink discharged to the discharge port surface due to the negative pressure in the nozzle is again sucked into the nozzle. Yes.
However, with the above method, it is possible to reduce the amount of ink remaining on the ejection port surface before wiping, but the ink has not been sufficiently removed. This is because the negative pressure in the nozzle is set to a condition suitable for ink ejection during the recording operation, and since the value is small, the ink remaining on the ejection port surface cannot be sufficiently sucked. . Further, in order to reduce the remaining ink amount, a lot of wait time is required.
In addition, a method has been used in which the number of wiping operations is increased and finally the amount of ink remaining on the ejection port surface is suppressed. However, in this case as well, a lot of time is required. In addition, there is a problem that a considerable amount of ink adheres to the wiping portion of the wiper blade in the first wiping operation, and the ink is scattered to stain the inside of the machine. That is, the wiper blade in contact with the ejection port surface during wiping is elastically deformed, and when the wiper blade is detached from the recording head ejection port surface, the elastic deformation is released to return to the original shape. At this time, there is a problem that the ink adhering to the wiper blade is scattered and the inside of the apparatus is soiled.
In addition, in order to reduce the size of the apparatus, when adopting a configuration in which the discharge port surfaces of a plurality of recording heads are wiped with one wiper blade, or when using a recording head having a plurality of nozzle rows on the same surface, Further, there is a possibility that ink color mixing may occur due to repeated wiping. That is, when a plurality of colors of residual ink are repeatedly wiped with one wiping blade, mixed color ink is generated at the tip of the wiping blade, and the mixed color ink may enter the nozzle from the ink discharge port. When an image is recorded in a state where mixed color ink has entered the nozzle, the color of the recorded image is different from the original image color to be formed, and the image quality is significantly reduced.
Further, in order to reduce the degradation of image quality caused by such mixed color ink, a predetermined number of preliminary discharges are performed after the wiping operation is completed, and after the mixed color ink that has entered the nozzles is discharged, the recording operation is started. A method has also been implemented. However, since the number of preliminary ejections needs to be determined according to the amount of mixed-color ink generated, if a large amount of ink remains on the ejection port surface and the amount of mixed-color ink generated increases, a number of preliminary ejections are performed. Discharging is required. As a result, there arises a problem that the amount of waste liquid increases and the running cost increases.
In addition to the method of discharging ink from the nozzle as described above, in order to recover the discharge performance of the recording head, in addition to the method of sucking ink from the nozzle, the ink is pressurized from the nozzle rear and discharged from the nozzle. There is also a way to make it. However, this method is the same in that the ink is discharged from the discharge port, and has the same problem as the case of sucking the ink from the discharge port.
The present invention relates to an ink jet recording apparatus and a recording head recovery apparatus capable of greatly reducing ink remaining on the discharge port surface even when ink is discharged from the discharge port in order to recover the discharge performance of the print head. And a recording head recovery method.
In order to achieve the above object, the present invention has the following configuration.
That is, the first aspect of the present invention is an ink jet recording apparatus that performs recording on a recording medium by ejecting ink droplets from nozzles of a recording head, and discharging means that discharges ink that does not contribute to recording from the nozzles. And a negative pressure generating means for applying a negative pressure lower than atmospheric pressure to the nozzle, and the negative pressure generating means discharges ink droplets from the nozzle after the ink discharging operation by the discharging means. A negative pressure larger than that is applied to the nozzle.
A second aspect of the present invention is a recovery method for recovering the ejection performance of the nozzles to a recording head having nozzles that eject ink droplets, and discharges ink that does not contribute to recording from the nozzles. And a negative pressure generating step of applying a negative pressure lower than atmospheric pressure to the nozzle, wherein the negative pressure generating step discharges ink droplets from the nozzle after the ink discharging operation by the discharging means. A negative pressure larger than that during the recording operation is applied to the nozzle.
According to the present invention, after the ink is discharged from the nozzle to restore the discharge performance of the nozzle of the recording head, a larger negative pressure is applied to the nozzle than during the recording operation. Ink adhering to the ink can be sucked into the nozzle. As a result, it is possible to reduce ink remaining on the ejection port surface, and it is possible to properly eject ink during recording. In addition, even if there is a concern about the generation of mixed color ink due to the wiping operation on the discharge port surface, the amount of mixed color ink generated is suppressed to a small amount as the residual ink on the discharge port surface is reduced. The number of discharges such as discharge can also be reduced. In addition, since the amount of ink adhering to the wiping member during the wiping operation is also reduced, the contamination inside the machine due to the scattering of ink from the wiping member into the machine is reduced.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

FIG. 4 is a plan view showing the shape of an impeller provided in the pressure adjusting pump, and FIG. 5 shows the rotation speed (rpm) of the impeller shown in FIG. 4 and the pressure acting on the ink in each nozzle 22Kn of the
At the time of recording, it is necessary to apply an appropriate negative pressure to the
As described above, due to the centrifugal force generated in the ink when the
The magnitude of the negative pressure generated in the vicinity of the rotation center R1 according to the speed (the number of rotations per unit time) when the
By the way, as the
On the other hand, when a piston pump or the like classified as a so-called volume type is used as the
Next, a pressure circulation cleaning operation for recovering the recording head using the recovery unit 40 (see FIG. 1) and the capping mechanism 50 (see FIGS. 1 and 6) will be described. The cleaning operation herein refers to an operation performed to continuously maintain the ink discharge quality of the recording heads 22K to 22Y (see FIG. 1). This cleaning operation is performed automatically or arbitrarily by the user when conditions such as the elapsed time since the recording operation stopped and the discharge status of the recording head are satisfied, or when there is an abnormality in the image quality. Is done.
FIG. 6 is a longitudinal side view for explaining the configuration and operation of the

The
The
In the ink jet recording apparatus configured as described above, in a standby state where the recording operation is not performed, the recording head 107 is in the lowered position as shown in FIG. 6A, and the
Here, in the recovery process, the recording head 107 is raised to the position shown in FIG. 6B, and ink is discharged from the discharge port of the recording head 107 by the pressure applied by the pump, and the recovery system unit located below. It is discharged to 100
This wiping operation is performed by moving the
Here, the pressure circulation cleaning operation performed under the control of the
When performing the cleaning operation, first, in order to ensure the required amount of ink in the
After the ink is circulated, the
The ink stored in the bottom of the
At this time, a considerable amount of ink remains on the discharge port surface 22Ks of the
Therefore, in the present embodiment, the
After the pressure discharge operation, a large negative pressure as described above is applied to the nozzle 22Kn of the recording head, and a short wait time is provided (S712), thereby remaining on the discharge port surface 22Ks centering on the discharge port of the nozzle 22Kn. Most of the ink to be discharged is quickly sucked into the nozzle, and only a small amount of ink remains on the discharge port surface.
Thereafter, in order to remove a small amount of ink remaining on the ejection port surface together with the foreign matter, each recording head is moved to a wiping operation position (position shown in FIG. 6B) above the ink discharge position (S713). .
When the
After completion of the wiping operation, the
As described above, in the present embodiment, since the amount of ink remaining on the ejection port surface 22Ks and the like at the start of the wiping operation is extremely small, the amount of mixed color ink entering the nozzle 22Kn is also small. For this reason, the number of discharges in preliminary discharge can be reduced, the amount of waste liquid can be reduced, and the running cost can be reduced. Similarly, since the amount of ink adhering to the wiper blade is also reduced, the amount of ink scattered from the wiper blade into the apparatus is greatly reduced even when the wiper blade is released from the discharge port surface and returns elastically. In addition, the contamination inside the apparatus is greatly reduced.
Finally, the

Next, with reference to FIG. 8, a wiping operation for sequentially wiping the ink adhering to the ejection port surfaces 22Ks, 22Cs and the like with the
FIG. 8A is a cross-sectional view schematically showing a state immediately before the inks of the nozzles 22Cn and Kn are pressurized and discharged, and the two discharge port surfaces are cleaned with the wiping blade from the nozzle 22, and FIG. It is sectional drawing which shows typically the state which is cleaning the discharge port surface of the 3rd with the wiping blade. (C) is a cross-sectional view schematically showing a state in which the second discharge port surface is cleaned with a wiping blade after cleaning the first discharge port surface, and (d) is a second discharge port surface. It is sectional drawing which shows typically the state which cleaning of the exit surface was substantially complete | finished.
First, as shown in FIG. 8A, the
Subsequently, as shown in FIG. 8B, the
In the present embodiment, as described above, after the wiping operation, a large negative pressure within a range that does not destroy the meniscus formed at the discharge ports at the nozzles 22Kn and Cn is applied to each nozzle, and the amounts of residual ink IC and Ik are reduced. It is to be reduced quickly. For this reason, it is possible to shorten the cleaning time, eliminate ejection failure due to unwiping, reduce the amount of waste ink to eliminate the mixed color layer Z, and reduce device contamination due to ink remaining in the
(Second Embodiment)
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described.
In the second embodiment, the negative pressure generating means shown in FIG. 9 is provided in place of the negative pressure generating means in the first embodiment, and other configurations are the same as those in the first embodiment. It is the same.
Hereinafter, the negative pressure generating means in this embodiment will be described with reference to FIG.
The negative pressure generating means in the second embodiment is provided with a
In the above configuration, one or more of the flow
Further, it is possible to set a more appropriate negative pressure by appropriately combining both the number of valve bodies opened in the flow
(Other embodiments)
The present invention is characterized in that after the ink is forcibly discharged from the ejection port of the recording head, the ink adhering to the ejection port surface is sucked into the nozzle from the ejection port. Therefore, the ink discharging means for forcibly discharging the ink from the recording head, the means for generating a negative pressure in the recording head, and the like can be configured other than the above-described embodiments as follows.
That is, in the above embodiment, the case where the ink is forcibly discharged from the nozzle 22Kn by the pressure applied by the cleaning
Various known pumps can be used as the pressure adjusting pump. For example, a reciprocating pump that drives the piston in the cylinder to suck the ink in the sub tank and discharges the sucked ink to the recording head may be used.
It is also possible to use a so-called gear pump in which a pair of gears meshing with each other is provided in the casing, and the gears rotate to suck ink from the sub-tank and pressure-feed ink to the recording head.
Further, as the pressurizing pump, a so-called tube pump in which a flexible tube is pushed out while being crushed by a plurality of rollers provided on a rotating body that is rotated by a motor can be applied.
In addition, the means for forcibly discharging the ink from the ejection port is not limited to the pressure ejection unit as described above, and the ink is ejected by the negative pressure generated outside the recording head with respect to the ejection port of the recording head. The ink may be forcibly sucked and discharged from the outlet. For example, a negative pressure is generated by a pump or the like in a cap that covers the discharge port of the recording head as shown in FIG. 6, and the ink is forcibly sucked and discharged from the discharge port by the negative pressure. Is possible.
The negative pressure generating means for generating a negative pressure for sucking the ink adhering to the discharge port surface into the discharge port after forcibly discharging the ink from the discharge port of the recording head is also other than the above embodiments. It is possible to adopt the following configuration. That is, in the negative pressure generating means of the above embodiment, the negative pressure applied to each nozzle of the recording head is adjusted during the recording operation by adjusting the force for sucking up the ink in the head liquid chamber of the recording head by the pressure adjusting pump. It can be changed in two stages after the discharging operation. However, the negative pressure generating means in the present invention is not limited as long as it can generate different negative pressures in the recording head during the recording operation and after the discharging operation, and the configuration other than the negative pressure generating means shown in the above embodiment. It is also possible to adopt.
Further, in the above-described embodiment, the case where the negative pressure is generated in the nozzle by applying the negative pressure to the ink in the recording head has been described. However, it is also possible to apply a negative pressure to the nozzles of the recording head by sucking air in a space formed above the ink storage area in the sub tank and generating a negative pressure in the sub tank. In this case, various configurations can be applied as means for discharging the air in the sub tank. For example, a configuration in which the air in the sub tank is discharged by a fan provided inside or outside the sub tank is applied. It is possible.
Further, a tank (sub tank or main tank) for storing ink to be supplied to the recording head is provided below the recording head in the gravity direction so that a negative pressure is generated in the recording head by utilizing a water head difference between the recording head and the tank. It is also possible to make it. In this case, switching between the negative pressure applied to the recording head during the recording operation and the negative pressure applied to the recording head after the ink discharging operation is performed by an elevating mechanism that moves the tank up and down. That is, during the recording operation, the recording head is positioned at a position where the water head difference between the recording head and the tank becomes small, and after the ink discharging operation, the tank is lowered and a large water head is placed between the recording head and the recording head. Make a difference. By adjusting the water head difference between the recording head and the tank in this way, it is possible to adjust the negative pressure generated in the recording head.
The above-described recording head cleaning method can be applied to a system including a plurality of devices (for example, a host computer, an interface device, a reader, and a recording device). Furthermore, the cleaning method can be applied to an independent apparatus (for example, a copying machine, a facsimile machine, etc.).

It is also possible to do.
Further, as the storage medium, for example, a magnetic disk, a hard disk, an optical disk, a magneto-optical disk, a CD-ROM, a CD-R, a magnetic tape, a nonvolatile memory card, a ROM, or the like can be used.
In addition, it is also possible to perform part or all of actual processing by an OS (operating system) running on a computer based on an instruction of a program code for realizing the cleaning method of the present invention. is there.
