Description
The present invention relates to a reproducing magnetic head and a manufacturing method thereof, and more particularly, to a reproducing magnetic head characterized by a structure for flattening and narrowing a reproducing magnetic head provided in a magnetic disk head and a manufacturing method thereof. Is.
In recent years, hard disk drive devices are used as storage means in various information processing devices, and GMR elements, TMR elements, or the like are used as reproducing magnetic heads constituting magnetic heads in such hard disk drive devices.
This GMR element or TMR element is a magnetoresistive sensor that utilizes the magnetoresistive effect that changes its electrical resistance in response to changes in the external magnetic field, and has good detection sensitivity. Has contributed greatly.
In order to meet the demand for higher density recording in recent years, it is necessary to narrow the core width of the magnetoresistive sensor. However, the conventional manufacturing method using a resist pattern having a constriction supports further narrow core width. Therefore, various methods using the CMP method have been proposed as a method of forming a magnetoresistive sensor having a narrow core width (see, for example, Patent Document 1).

The combination of the CMP method and the removal of the hard mask described above makes it possible to achieve both a narrow core width and a narrow gap width. However, as the

Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to avoid the occurrence of steps and protrusions associated with the removal of a hard mask, and to achieve a desired narrow read gap width that can cope with high-density recording.

In addition, as a method for manufacturing a reproducing magnetic head, a step of forming the
By adopting such a process, there is no step or protrusion when the mask is removed, so that the flatness of the upper electrode layer 5 is ensured and the intended narrow read gap width can be achieved. .

The second etching stopper layer 7 does not need to have conductivity.

As such a dummy layer, a metal material of any one of Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, and Pd, or an alloy containing a metal material is desirable.

After patterning the magnetoresistive film by ion milling, the insulating film and the magnetic domain control film are sequentially stacked while leaving the mask, and then the second etching stopper layer and the dummy layer on the magnetic domain control film are sequentially deposited, and then the CMP is performed. The magnetic domain control film formed on the mask, the second etching stopper layer, the dummy layer, and a part of the top of the mask are removed and planarized, and then the dummy layer is removed by ion milling, and then the reactive ions The mask is selectively removed by the etching method using the first etching stopper layer and the second etching stopper layer as a stopper layer.
