Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a scattering member used for increasing the light emission efficiency of an organic electroluminescence display device, and an organic electroluminescence display device using the scattering member.
An organic electroluminescence display device (also referred to as an organic EL display device) is a self-luminous display device, and is used for displays and illumination. The organic EL display has advantages in display performance such as higher visibility than conventional CRTs and LCDs and no viewing angle dependency. There is also an advantage that the display can be made lighter and thinner. On the other hand, in addition to the advantages of reducing the weight and the thickness of organic EL lighting, there is a possibility of realizing illumination in a shape that could not be realized so far by using a flexible substrate.
Although organic EL display devices and inorganic EL display devices have excellent characteristics, in general, the refractive index of each layer constituting the display device including the light emitting layer is higher than that of air. For example, in an organic EL display device, the refractive index of an organic thin film layer such as a light emitting layer is 1.6 to 2.1. For this reason, total reflection and interference easily occur at the interface of the emitted light, the light extraction efficiency is less than 20%, and most of the light is lost.
The optical loss in this organic EL display device will be outlined with reference to FIG.
As shown in FIG. 1, the organic EL display device basically has a
However, as shown in FIG. 1, the light generated inside the display device may be totally reflected depending on the angle of incidence on the adjacent layer interface having a different refractive index, and may be guided out of the display device and taken out to the outside. Not possible (lights Lb and Lc in FIG. 1). The ratio of the guided light is determined by the relative refractive index with the adjacent layer, and is a general organic EL display device (air (n = 1.0) / transparent substrate (n = 1.5) / transparent electrode (n = 2.0) / organic layer (n = 1.7) / back electrode), the proportion of light that is not emitted into the atmosphere (air) but is guided inside the display device is about 81%. That is, only about 19% of the total light emission amount can be effectively used.
Therefore, in order to improve the light extraction efficiency, (a) the light (Lb in FIG. 1) that is totally reflected at the transparent substrate / air interface and guided through the “organic layer + transparent electrode + transparent substrate” is extracted (b) ) It is essential to take out light (Lc in FIG. 1) that is totally reflected at the transparent electrode / transparent substrate interface and guided through the “organic layer + transparent electrode”.
Among these, regarding (a), a method has been proposed in which irregularities are formed on the surface of the transparent substrate to prevent total reflection at the transparent substrate / air interface (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
Regarding (b), a method of processing the transparent electrode / transparent substrate interface and the light emitting layer / adjacent layer interface into a diffraction grating shape (for example, see
However, the above method is difficult to process and has a problem that dielectric breakdown is likely to occur during energization. Further development of a useful light extraction method is desired for increasing the efficiency of the light emitting display device.
As one means for solving these problems, for example, a means for improving the extraction efficiency by providing a light scattering layer on the surface of the organic EL surface light emitter has been proposed. (For example, see
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to obtain a display device having high light extraction efficiency and less image blur in a self-luminous light emitting display device in which the refractive index of the light emitting portion is higher than the refractive index of air. . In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide a scattering member capable of increasing the extraction efficiency of light guided through “organic layer + transparent electrode” and an organic electroluminescence display device having high light extraction efficiency.

As described in the background art, the reason for the low light extraction efficiency of the self-luminous display device is that the light generated inside the display device causes total reflection when the angle of incidence on the adjacent layer interface having a different refractive index is large, This is because the inside of the display device is guided and cannot be taken out.
On the other hand, by introducing a scattering member composed of a binder and light scattering particles into the organic EL display device, it becomes possible to extract these lights to the outside. This is realized by bending the traveling direction of light guided in the layer by total reflection by the action of light scattering.
At this time, by making the refractive index of the binder of the scattering member equal to or greater than the refractive index of the organic light emitting layer, it is possible to extract light guided in the high refractive index layer including the organic light emitting layer. . At this time, by scattering light on the upper electrode, the distance between the light emitting point and the scattering position can be reduced, and deterioration of the resolution of the image due to light scattering can be suppressed. Furthermore, in order to further increase the light extraction efficiency, it is preferable to increase the number of times light scattering occurs. For this purpose, it is preferable to increase the number of total reflections in the high refractive index layer including the organic light emitting layer, and this can be realized by thinning the high refractive index layer including the organic light emitting layer.
Further, the light extraction efficiency can also be increased by making the refractive index of the binder of the bonding agent lower than that of the organic light emitting layer and making the refractive index of the light scattering particles equal to that of the organic light emitting layer. In this case, total reflection occurs at the interface between the upper electrode and the scattering member. When light scattering particles with a high refractive index come into contact with this interface, light scattering occurs at this contact point, and the totally reflected light is externally reflected. Can be taken out.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in more detail.
