Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device.
In a liquid crystal display device, the luminance of the light source for the backlight greatly affects the image quality of the displayed image. On the other hand, backlight light sources such as cold cathode fluorescent lamps and LEDs have a characteristic that the light emission luminance (light source luminance) varies depending on the temperature of the light source even when the power supplied to the light source is constant. FIG. 5 shows an approximate correspondence between temperature and light emission luminance in a backlight (light source) with a constant supply power.
On the other hand,
On the other hand, in a liquid crystal display device, the visual brightness of a display image depends on the balance between the image luminance of the entire display image (image gradation level) and the luminance of the backlight light source. Specifically, if the image brightness of the entire display image increases, the glare is alleviated by lowering the light source brightness, and if the image brightness of the entire display image decreases, the brightness of the image is increased by increasing the light source brightness. It is desirable to ensure enough.
However, in a moving image in which video for several tens of frames is updated and displayed per second, the video luminance is large and changes at high speed for each video for one frame. For this reason, the target luminance of the light source corresponding to the image luminance is set for each image of one frame, and the power supplied to the light source so that the actually detected light source luminance becomes the target luminance as shown in
In addition, when the power supplied to the light source is controlled so as to correspond to the target luminance of the light source on a one-to-one basis, a deviation of the light source luminance from the target luminance occurs depending on the temperature of the light source, and the visual brightness of the display image is also reduced. There was a problem that it could not be kept good.
Accordingly, the present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and the object of the present invention is to provide a visual brightness of a moving image displayed on a liquid crystal display panel regardless of a temperature change of a light source for a backlight. An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device that can be kept in good condition.
In order to achieve the above object, a liquid crystal display device according to the present invention comprises a liquid crystal panel for displaying an image and a light source for illuminating the liquid crystal panel, and each of the constituent elements shown in the following (1) and (2) Is provided.
(1) Temperature detection means for detecting the temperature of the light source or the vicinity thereof.
(2) Supply power automatic adjustment means for automatically adjusting the supply power to the light source based on the feature quantity of the input video signal and the temperature detected by the temperature detection means.
The light source for the backlight generally includes a cold cathode tube, but it may be possible to include another light source whose light emission characteristics change depending on the temperature. A typical example of the feature amount of the input video signal is an index value of video luminance, such as an average luminance level (APL (Average Picture Level)) of the video signal for one frame.
According to the present invention, it is possible to automatically adjust the power supplied to the light source so that the luminance of the light source becomes a desired luminance (target luminance) according to the temperature change of the light source for the backlight, and for each image that changes at high speed. , The brightness of the light source can be automatically adjusted so that the visual brightness is in an appropriate state, with the balance between the feature quantity that is an index of the image brightness (the gradation level of the image) and the brightness of the light source for the backlight. .
More specifically, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention further includes temperature / feature value / control value correspondence information representing a correspondence relationship between the temperature, the feature amount of the input video signal, and the control value for adjusting the power supply. It is conceivable to have storage means for storing in advance. In this case, the supply power automatic adjustment means automatically adjusts the supply power to the light source based on the temperature detected by the temperature detection means, the feature quantity of the input video signal, and the temperature / feature quantity / control value correspondence information. .
By the way, the feature amount of the input video signal can change greatly (at high speed) for each frame of video, while the temperature change of the light source is relatively gradual. When the power supplied to the sound source is adjusted while determining the state of both the temperature of the light source and the feature amount of the input video signal for each frame of video (for example, every (1/60) second). , Hardware with high processing speed (such as MPU) is required, which leads to an increase in power consumption and cost.
Therefore, it is conceivable that the supply power automatic adjustment means automatically adjusts the supply power to the light source by including the following components (3) and (4).
(3) For each input of the input video signal for a plurality of frames, based on the detected temperature of the temperature detection means and the temperature / feature / control value correspondence information, the feature of the input video signal and the supply power Feature quantity / control value correspondence information recording means for recording information representing a correspondence relationship with the control value for adjustment in a predetermined storage means.
(4) For each input of the input video signal for one frame, automatically supply power to the light source based on the feature quantity of the input video signal and the latest recorded information by the feature quantity / control value correspondence information recording means. Frame unit power adjustment means to adjust.
The automatic power supply adjusting means shown here performs control corresponding to the temperature of the light source, which is relatively gradual, in a relatively long cycle in which video signals for a plurality of frames are input, and the input The control corresponding to the feature amount of the video signal is performed for each input of the video signal for one frame whose feature amount can change greatly. As a result, the processing load can be reduced while maintaining the control performance.
The temperature / video luminance / control value correspondence information includes a look-up table in which predetermined temperature classification is set, and the supply power automatic adjustment means detects the temperature from the temperature / video luminance / control value correspondence information. It is conceivable to automatically adjust the power supplied to the light source based on the look-up table selected according to the detected temperature of the means. As the look-up table, a look-up table representing a correspondence relationship between the feature amount of the input video signal and the control value for adjusting the supply power can be considered.
As a result, it is possible to reduce the computational load that must be executed at high speed in accordance with the feature amount of the video signal that changes at high speed.
In addition, the temperature / video brightness / control value correspondence information includes an arithmetic expression in which each predetermined temperature section is set, and the automatic power supply adjusting means is configured to detect the temperature detection means from the temperature / video brightness / control value correspondence information. It is also conceivable to automatically adjust the power supplied to the light source based on the arithmetic expression selected according to the detected temperature. As the arithmetic expression, an arithmetic expression representing a correspondence relationship between the feature amount of the input video signal and the control value for adjusting the supply power can be considered.
Further, the temperature / video luminance / control value correspondence information includes first correspondence information representing a correspondence relationship between the feature amount of the input video signal and the luminance of the light source, and the light source set for each predetermined temperature category. It is conceivable that the second correspondence information indicating the correspondence relationship between the brightness of the current and the control value for adjusting the supply power is included.
Accordingly, information on what level the luminance of the light source should be according to the feature amount of the input video signal, and which power supply to the light source according to the temperature of the light source to obtain the necessary light source luminance. It can be handled separately from the information on what level should be, and it is easy for the designer to set each information.
The automatic supply power adjustment means variably controls the supply power to the light source according to the feature amount of the input video signal, and performs correction control of the supply power to the light source according to the temperature detected by the temperature detection means. It is also possible.
According to the present invention, it is possible to automatically adjust the power supplied to a light source so that the luminance of the light source becomes a desired luminance (target luminance) according to the temperature change of the light source for the backlight and According to the feature amount, the luminance of the backlight light source can be automatically adjusted so that the visual brightness of the displayed image is in an appropriate state. As a result, the visual brightness of the moving image displayed on the liquid crystal display panel can be kept good regardless of the temperature change of the light source.

This is information indicating how much the luminance (light emission amount) of the

The APL / light source luminance correspondence information D1 and the temperature / light source luminance / duty ratio correspondence information D2 correspond to the correspondence between the video luminance level (APL) and the light source luminance, and the luminance of the

At this time, the

As described above, for the control corresponding to the detected temperature of the temperature sensor 9 (the temperature of the backlight light source 6) that changes relatively slowly, the
If the ADL / duty ratio correspondence information D3 is a lookup table (lookup table format information), the processing load for calculating (determining) the duty ratio based on the average luminance level is also based on an arithmetic expression or the like. This is preferable because it can be reduced.
