Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery such as a lithium ion secondary battery, and more particularly to a safety technique for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery.
In recent years, electronic devices have become increasingly portable and cordless, and the demand for secondary batteries that are small, light, and have high energy density is increasing as power sources for driving these devices. A typical secondary battery includes a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery. In a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, in general, an active material such as lithium metal or a lithium alloy is used as a negative electrode material, or carbon is a host material (here, a host material is a substance that can occlude and release lithium ions). A lithium intercalation compound in which lithium ions are occluded is used. Further, as the electrolytic solution, an aprotic organic solvent in which a lithium salt such as LiClO 4 or LiPF 6 is dissolved is used.
Specifically, this nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes a negative electrode plate, a positive electrode plate, and a separator. In the negative electrode plate, the negative electrode material is held in the negative electrode current collector, and in the positive electrode plate, a positive electrode active material that reversibly electrochemically reacts with lithium ions (for example, lithium cobalt composite oxide) is held in the positive electrode current collector. Has been. The separator holds the electrolytic solution and is interposed between the negative electrode plate and the positive electrode plate to prevent a short circuit from occurring between the negative electrode plate and the positive electrode plate.
As a method for producing such a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, first, a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate are respectively formed into a thin film sheet or a foil, and the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate are laminated or spirally arranged through a separator. Turn to form a power generation element. Next, it is housed in a battery container made of metal such as stainless steel, nickel-plated iron or aluminum, and a non-aqueous electrolyte is poured into the battery container. Thereafter, the lid plate is fixed to the battery container to seal the battery container. Thereby, a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is assembled.
By the way, generally, when a lithium secondary battery is overcharged or when an internal short circuit occurs in the lithium secondary battery, the lithium secondary battery generates heat and becomes high temperature. Lithium secondary batteries have the potential to cause thermal runaway at high temperatures, and thus there is a demand for improved safety.
The main cause of thermal runaway when a lithium secondary battery is left at high temperature is that the positive electrode active material is unstable in a charged state and at high temperature. That is, in a charged state and at a high temperature, oxygen is desorbed from the positive electrode active material (generally, lithium composite oxide), and the desorbed active oxygen reacts with the electrolytic solution and the like. Since reaction heat is generated by this reaction, the temperature is further increased. If the temperature is further increased, the desorption of oxygen from the positive electrode active material becomes violent, so that the reaction with the electrolytic solution is likely to occur, and the reaction heat is likely to be generated. As described above, when the temperature is high, the active oxygen reacts with the electrolytic solution and the like, and reaction heat is easily generated, and when the reaction heat is generated, the temperature is further increased. It is believed that the positive electrode active material is subject to thermal runaway due to such chained heat generation.
The reason why the lithium secondary battery becomes high temperature is considered as follows. When the battery becomes abnormal due to overcharge or internal short circuit, the separator melts or contracts, and the positive electrode and the negative electrode are short-circuited. A large current flows due to this short circuit, and as a result, the temperature rises rapidly. When the temperature rises rapidly, as described above, the lithium secondary battery goes out of control.
Generally, in order to ensure safety during overcharge, a lithium ion battery has a component (CID) that cuts off current due to an increase in internal pressure due to gas generated when the temperature of the battery rises. In addition, assuming the failure of CID, a function to block the current by closing the pores of the separator by thermal contraction at the stage before the battery suddenly rises in temperature when overcharged using a polyethylene porous separator is provided. Yes. Specifically, since a rapid temperature rise of the battery occurs from around 120 ° C., by using a porous separator containing polyethylene having a heat shrink temperature of 110 ° C. to 120 ° C., the heat shrinkage of the separator at 110 ° C. to 120 ° C. Has a current interrupt function. However, when an internal short-circuit occurs, the separator holes generated in the short-circuit portion expand due to heat generated by the short-circuit, thereby expanding the short-circuit area and rapidly increasing the battery temperature.
On the other hand, the technique proposed in
This overcharge problem has not only the porous insulating ceramic layer described in
Therefore, the present invention solves such problems, and is a non-aqueous electrolyte excellent in safety that can suppress overrun safety and battery thermal runaway even when sudden battery heat generation occurs due to an internal short circuit. An object is to provide a secondary battery.
The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the present invention includes a conductive positive electrode current collector, a positive electrode having a positive electrode mixture layer that is held by the positive electrode current collector and includes a plurality of types of lithium composite oxides, A negative electrode having a negative electrode current collector, a negative electrode mixture layer that is held by the negative electrode current collector and includes a negative electrode active material capable of electrochemically occluding and releasing lithium ions, and between the positive electrode and the negative electrode The porous insulating layer is a porous insulating layer in which a shutdown phenomenon occurs at 140 ° C. or higher, or a porous insulating layer in which a shutdown phenomenon does not occur, and an olivine The lithium composite oxide having a structure or a spinel structure is interspersed or covers the interface between the positive electrode current collector and the positive electrode mixture layer. Here, the shutdown phenomenon is a phenomenon in which lithium ions cannot pass through the porous insulating layer due to the pores of the porous insulating layer being blocked, thereby interrupting the current. The fact that the shutdown phenomenon does not occur means that the hole of the porous insulating layer is not blocked even if the temperature becomes several hundred degrees due to thermal runaway in the battery.
In the above configuration, when the battery causes an internal short circuit, the conventional porous insulation layer mainly composed of polyethylene having a low heat shrinkage temperature has a low heat shrinkage temperature. Since the contact area between the positive electrode and the negative electrode is enlarged, a large current flows through the short-circuit point, and the battery tends to run out of heat. Since the heat shrinkage area of the porous insulating layer can be reduced, the contact between the positive electrode and the negative electrode can be minimized, and a large current can be prevented from flowing at the short circuit point. As a result, the temperature rise of the battery at the time of a short circuit can be moderated, and safety is improved.
On the other hand, at the time of overcharge, lithium composite oxide having an olivine structure or a spinel structure is scattered at the interface between the positive electrode current collector and the positive electrode mixture layer instead of the polyethylene-based separator, or the interface is By covering, when the voltage exceeds a certain voltage, the overvoltage accompanying the rise in DC resistance causes almost no current during overcharging to flow, so the battery may stop charging before it reaches a thermal runaway state. it can.
Also, by arranging a material having an olivine structure or a spinel structure at the current collector interface, the reaction resistance is increased when the battery voltage exceeds the predetermined voltage effectively in a smaller amount than when interspersed in the mixture. As a result, it is possible to ensure safety during overcharge without reducing the battery capacity.
In particular, it is considered that a particularly great effect can be obtained when the porous insulating layer is a porous insulating layer that does not cause a shutdown phenomenon.
The porous insulating layer preferably includes at least a metal oxide. Metal oxides have excellent heat resistance at a heat resistance temperature of 1000 ° C or higher, and contact between the positive electrode and the negative electrode at the time of short circuit is minimized. It is considered to be a material.
In particular, magnesia (MgO), silica (SiO 2 ), aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ), and zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) are the most optimal materials for the reasons described above.
As shown in preferred embodiments described below, the porous insulating layer can be formed of a metal oxide and a binder to form a porous insulating layer.
Preferably, the porous insulating layer is a porous insulating layer in which secondary particles obtained by sintering or dissolving and recrystallizing a part of the primary particles of the metal oxide are bonded by a binder. A porous insulating layer having a higher lithium ion permeability can be formed. More preferably, the secondary particles are optimally composed of chain-like or layer-like particle groups for the same reason as described above. Moreover, it is preferable for the same reason as described above that the primary particles of the secondary particles having a chain shape have a diameter in the range of 0.01 to 0.5 μm.

The porous insulating layer preferably includes a binder and is fixed to the positive electrode or negative electrode surface. By forming the porous insulating layer on the surface of the electrode plate, the electrode group can be more easily produced.
Meanwhile, the material having an olivine structure, Li Z Fe 1-y X y PO 4 (0 <z ≦ 1,0 ≦ y ≦ 0.3) (X = Nb, Mg, Ti, Zr, Ta, W, Mn , Ni, or Co) can be used.

According to the present invention, it is possible to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery excellent in safety during both overcharge and internal short circuit.
Before explaining the best embodiment of the present invention, the circumstances that led to this will be described.
Conventionally, there has been no separator that prevents thermal runaway from both overcharge and internal short circuit as described above. Although it is conceivable to combine a porous polyethylene film and a porous insulating ceramic layer, there is a problem that the manufacturing cost increases. As a result of various studies, the present inventors have come up with the idea of using a lithium composite oxide having an olivine structure or a spinel structure.
LiFePO 4 having an olivine structure is attracting attention as a positive electrode active material that is less likely to cause thermal runaway because oxygen does not escape even at high temperatures, but has a low discharge capacity and a low voltage and poor electronic conductivity. This is a material under study. Here, the inventors of the present application have found that when LiFePO 4 is used as the positive electrode active material, when the battery voltage becomes 3.9 V or more during charging, the overvoltage rapidly rises to interrupt the current. In addition, it was found that when a positive electrode active material having a manganese spinel structure was used, the overvoltage suddenly increased and the current was interrupted when the battery voltage was 4.3 V or higher during charging. The inventors of the present application have confirmed that such a current interruption phenomenon when a constant voltage is reached during charging is commonly seen in lithium composite oxides having an olivine structure or a spinel structure.
With the above phenomenon as a hint, the inventors of the present application have come up with the following embodiment.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. The present invention is not limited to the following embodiment.
In the embodiment of the present invention, a lithium ion secondary battery is taken as an example of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, and the configuration thereof is shown.

In the present embodiment, the
In order to ensure the safety at the time of overcharge, the inventors of the present application mixed and mixed a material having an olivine structure or a spinel structure (lithium composite oxide) in the positive

FIG. 3 is a diagram showing a configuration of the
In the lithium ion secondary battery, at the time of charging, lithium ions move in the positive
On the other hand, in the case shown in FIG. 3, since the
Material having an olivine structure, Li Z Fe 1-y X y PO 4 (0 <z ≦ 1,0 ≦ y ≦ 0.3) (X = Nb, Mg, Ti, Zr, Ta, W, Mn, Ni And any one of Co) can be used.
Material having a spinel structure, Li Z Mn 2-y X y O 4 (0 <z ≦ 1,1.5 ≦ y ≦ 2.0) (X = La, Nb, Mg, Ti, Zr, Ta, W , Any one of Mn, Ni, and Co).

It is done.

In the present embodiment, the positive electrode
As the negative electrode active material, for example, metal, metal fiber, carbon material, oxide, nitride, tin compound, silicon compound, or various alloy materials can be used. Examples of the carbon material include carbon materials such as various natural graphites, cokes, graphitized carbon, carbon fibers, spherical carbon, various artificial graphites, and amorphous carbon. In addition, since a single substance such as silicon (Si) / tin (Sn) or a silicon compound / tin compound has a large capacity density, a simple substance such as silicon (Si) / tin (Sn) or a silicon compound / tin compound is used as the negative electrode active material. It is preferable to use it. For example, as a silicon compound, SiO x (0.05 <x <1.95), or B, Mg, Ni, Ti, Mo, Co, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Nb, Ta, V, W A silicon alloy, a silicon compound, a silicon solid solution, or the like in which a part of Si is substituted with at least one element selected from the group consisting of Zn, C, N, and Sn can be used.

The porous
As a material for the porous insulating layer at which the above-described shutdown phenomenon occurs at 140 ° C. or higher, for example, polypropylene, a partially modified polypropylene, aramid, imide, or the like can be used.
On the other hand, as the porous insulating layer in which the shutdown phenomenon does not occur, a microporous thin film made of nonwoven fabric, metal oxide, metal nitride, metal sulfide, or the like can be raised.
In particular, when the porous insulating
The porous
As the metal oxide, alumina (aluminum oxide), titania (titanium oxide), zirconia (zirconium oxide), magnesia (magnesium oxide), zinc oxide, silica (silicon oxide), or the like can be used.
In particular, magnesia (MgO), silica (SiO 2 ), aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ), and zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) are the most optimal materials for the reasons described above.
The porous
Preferably, the porous insulating layer is a porous insulating layer in which secondary particles formed by sintering or dissolving and recrystallizing a part of the primary particles of the metal oxide are bonded by a binder. It becomes difficult to densely (finely) fill the metal oxide, so that the space region can be increased, and a porous insulating layer having high lithium ion permeability can be formed.
The secondary particles are more preferably composed of chain or layered particle groups for the same reason as described above. Moreover, it is preferable for the reason similar to the above that the primary particles of the secondary particles having the chain shape have a diameter in the range of 0.01 to 0.5 μm. The particle size (primary particle size such as the diameter of chain-like individual particles and the width of scaly individual flakes) can be determined (measured) by SEM (scanning electron microscope).
As a method of creating such a particle group, various chemical methods such as dissolving all of the corresponding substance or a part of the surface of the primary particle and recrystallizing it, such as dissolving in chemicals, applying external pressure, etc. Physical methods are mentioned. In particular, as a method that can be easily performed, a method of necking by raising the temperature to near the melting temperature of the material is common. It is desirable that the melt rate in a partially melted state is low in bulk density so that the shape is not crushed by stirring when making a paste.
The aforementioned binder is made of a polymer resin such as PVDF, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, aramid resin, polyamide, polyimide, polyamideimide, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylic acid, polyacrylic acid methyl ester, polyacrylic acid.
