Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a polymer electrolyte fuel cell including a polymer electrolyte membrane, and a membrane-electrode assembly and a membrane-catalyst layer assembly used in the polymer electrolyte fuel cell.
In recent years, fuel cells have attracted attention as clean energy sources. Examples of the fuel cell include a molten carbonate fuel cell, an alkaline aqueous fuel cell, a phosphoric acid fuel cell, and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell. Among these, phosphoric acid fuel cells and polymer electrolyte fuel cells are often used as fuel cells constituting a fuel cell system because their operating temperatures are lower than those of other fuel cells. In particular, the polymer electrolyte fuel cell is suitable for a household fuel cell system such as a cogeneration system because of its low operating temperature.
A polymer electrolyte fuel cell is constructed by laminating and fastening a plurality of cells each including a membrane-electrode assembly including an anode and a cathode and a polymer electrolyte membrane, an anode side separator, and a cathode side separator. Has been. The anode is composed of an anode side catalyst layer and an anode side gas diffusion layer. The cathode is composed of a cathode side catalyst layer and a cathode side gas diffusion layer. A polymer electrolyte fuel cell generates electricity and heat by a cell reaction between a fuel gas supplied to an anode and an oxidant gas supplied to a cathode.
In this case, in order to suppress deterioration of the polymer electrolyte membrane and improve the life of the fuel cell, the fuel cell is operated by supplying a reaction gas having a dew point equal to the cell temperature (full humidification operation). Is known (see Patent Document 1).
In a domestic fuel cell system such as a cogeneration system, cost reduction and downsizing of a fuel cell are pursued for practical use. Conventionally, it has been considered that the reaction gas needs to be humidified under high humidification conditions in order to stably generate power in the fuel cell. However, with the progress of materials, etc., it is no longer necessary. In view of this, the present inventors have studied not to provide a humidifier or to humidify the reaction gas under low humidification conditions in order to reduce costs.
As a result, in the configuration of
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problems. A fuel cell that operates stably even when the fuel cell is operated under low humidification conditions, and a membrane electrode that constitutes the fuel cell. It is an object to provide a joined body and a membrane-catalyst layer joined body.
Specifically, the inventors conducted the following examination.
The inventors have used the normal membrane-electrode assembly shown in FIG. 12 and the anode-side separator and cathode-side separator configured so that the fuel gas and the oxidant gas are in a so-called parallel flow. A cell (single fuel cell) shown in FIG. Further, as shown in FIG. 13, the inventors set the main surface of the cathode-side separator to the 27 region along the cathode gas flow path (the portion corresponding to the most upstream area of the cathode gas flow path is Using the current collector plate divided so that the region corresponding to the region P1 and the most downstream region of the cathode gas flow path becomes the region P27 (in FIG. 13, only the region divided into 27 points of the current collector plate is shown) Then, while keeping the total power generation amount constant under low humidification conditions, SO 2 is mixed in the oxidant gas, and the power generation amount (current) is measured for each of the divided regions (region P1 to region P27). An experiment was conducted. “Low humidification condition” is a temperature in which the operating temperature of the fuel cell is in the range of 60 ° C. to 120 ° C., and the dew point of the fuel gas supplied to the anode gas flow path is in the range of 50 ° C. to 70 ° C. The condition that the dew point of the oxidant gas supplied to the cathode gas channel is a dew point in the range of 35 ° C. to 70 ° C.
As a result, first, a decrease in the amount of power generation was confirmed in the upstream portion (region from P1 to P9) of the cathode gas flow path. Next, after about 80 hours have passed since the SO 2 was mixed, the amount of power generation in the midstream portion (region from P10 to P21) suddenly decreased, and then the upstream portion (from P1 to P9) after about 100 hours had elapsed. The power generation amount in the area of
The inventors considered the above results as follows. First, the decrease in the amount of power generation in the upstream portion (region from P1 to P9) that occurs up to 80 hours after mixing SO 2 is caused by the upstream portion of the cathode catalyst layer being poisoned by SO 2 . It is thought that. This is a phenomenon also seen when the same test is performed under full humidification conditions. On the other hand, when the SO 2 is further mixed, the power generation amount suddenly decreases in the midstream portion (region from P10 to P21) and the power generation amount in the upstream portion (region from P1 to P9) suddenly increases. This decrease was thought to be caused by the anode side catalyst layer being poisoned by SO 2 . This sudden decrease in the amount of power generated in the midstream and upstream is a unique phenomenon seen under low humidification conditions.
That is, when the fuel cell is operated under low humidification conditions, the water generated at the cathode by the power generation reaction moves from the cathode side to the anode side by reverse diffusion and moves to the anode side. Concomitantly, it was thought that SO 2 was carried to the anode side and poisoned the anode. Here, the water content of the cathode is increased toward the downstream side because water is generated by the power generation reaction. On the other hand, the sulfur compound contained in the oxidant gas is oxidized or adsorbed in the cathode side catalyst layer, or dissolved in water existing in the cathode, and therefore the amount increases toward the upstream side. Therefore, the amount of the sulfur compound that moves from the cathode side to the anode side is the largest in the midstream portion where both the back-diffusion water and the sulfur compound are present in a well-balanced state, followed by the upstream portion where the sulfur compound concentration is high. Therefore, it is considered that poisoning of the anode catalyst layer occurred in the order of the middle stream and upstream.
Therefore, the fuel cell of the present invention includes a polymer electrolyte membrane, an anode-side catalyst layer and an anode-side gas diffusion layer that are sequentially laminated on one main surface of the polymer electrolyte membrane, and the other of the polymer electrolyte membranes. A membrane-electrode assembly having a cathode side catalyst layer and a cathode side gas diffusion layer laminated in order on the main surface, and an anode gas channel is formed on one main surface, and the anode gas channel is formed A plate-like anode separator provided so that the main surface is in contact with the anode-side gas diffusion layer, a cathode gas flow channel is formed on one main surface, and the main surface on which the cathode gas flow channel is formed is A plate-like cathode-side separator provided in contact with the cathode-side gas diffusion layer, wherein a portion including the upstream end of the cathode gas channel is defined as an upstream portion, and the cathode gas In the case where a portion including the downstream end of the passage is defined as a downstream portion, and a portion other than the upstream portion and the downstream portion of the cathode gas flow path is defined as a midstream portion, the anode side catalyst layer corresponding to the midstream portion The total surface area of the catalyst particles supported per unit area of the polymer electrolyte membrane (hereinafter simply referred to as “per unit area”) per unit area in the anode-side catalyst layer corresponding to the upstream part and the downstream part Greater than the total surface area of the catalyst particles.
The “anode side catalyst layer corresponding to the midstream portion of the cathode gas flow path” refers to an anode side catalyst layer sandwiching the polymer electrolyte membrane and facing the midstream portion of the cathode gas flow path. The “anode side catalyst layer corresponding to the upstream portion of the cathode gas flow path” refers to an anode side catalyst layer sandwiching the polymer electrolyte membrane and facing the upstream portion of the cathode gas flow path. The “anode side catalyst layer corresponding to the downstream portion of the cathode gas flow path” refers to an anode side catalyst layer sandwiching the polymer electrolyte membrane and facing the downstream portion of the cathode gas flow path. The “polymer electrolyte membrane unit area” here refers to a unit area in a plan view of the polymer electrolyte membrane facing the anode catalyst layer in the anode catalyst layer laminated on the polymer electrolyte membrane. . In other words, it is a unit area in a plan view of the anode side catalyst layer facing the polymer electrolyte membrane. In the present invention, the total surface area of the catalyst particles supported per unit area in a plan view of the anode catalyst layer facing the polymer electrolyte membrane is changed for each part.
With such a configuration, the portion of the sulfur compound that moves accompanying the reverse diffusion water from the cathode side to the cathode side is adsorbed by the anode side catalyst layer having a large total surface area of the catalyst particles per unit area. And since the total surface area of the catalyst particles per unit area is large, there is a margin in the adsorption of sulfur compounds. Thereby, the voltage drop due to the progress of the poisoning of the anode is suppressed, and the operation of the fuel cell is stabilized.
The cathode-side catalyst layer corresponding to the downstream portion has a total surface area of catalyst particles per unit area (in other words, supported per unit area of the polymer electrolyte membrane) in the cathode-side catalyst layer corresponding to the upstream portion. It may be larger than the total surface area of the catalyst particles per unit area.

The “cathode side catalyst layer corresponding to the downstream portion” refers to a cathode side catalyst layer in a portion facing the downstream portion of the cathode gas flow path. Further, the “polymer electrolyte membrane unit area” here means a unit area in a plan view of the polymer electrolyte membrane facing the cathode catalyst layer in the cathode catalyst layer laminated on the polymer electrolyte membrane. . In other words, the unit area in a plan view of the cathode side catalyst layer facing the polymer electrolyte membrane. And in this invention, the total surface area of the catalyst particle carried | supported per unit area in planar view of the cathode side catalyst layer facing a polymer electrolyte membrane is changed for every site | part.
With this configuration, the sulfur compound contained in the oxidant gas supplied to the cathode gas channel is adsorbed on the cathode side catalyst layer corresponding to the upstream portion of the cathode gas channel before moving to the anode side. Is done. Accordingly, the progress of poisoning of the cathode side catalyst layer is suppressed and the progress of poisoning of the anode side catalyst layer is further suppressed, and the operation of the fuel cell is further stabilized.
The operating temperature of the fuel cell is a temperature in the range of 60 ° C. to 120 ° C., and the dew point of the fuel gas supplied to the anode gas channel is a dew point in the range of 50 ° C. to 70 ° C., and the cathode gas channel The dew point of the oxidant gas supplied to is preferably a dew point in the range of 35 ° C to 70 ° C.
With such a configuration, the fuel cell operates under so-called low humidification conditions. Thereby, the cost reduction and compactization of a fuel cell are implement | achieved. Furthermore, when the fuel cell is operated under low humidification conditions, the progress of poisoning of the anode side catalyst layer is suppressed.

As shown in FIG. 2, the anode-
As shown in FIG. 3, the cathode-

Next, the structure of the membrane-
As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the

The cathode
The material which comprises the anode
Further, the anode
In addition, as a polymer electrolyte used here, the same kind as the material which comprises the
Moreover, it is preferable that the metal particle used as an electrode catalyst is a thing with the average particle diameter of the range of 1-10 nm. It is preferable that the average particle diameter of the metal particles is 1 nm or more because preparation is industrially easy. Further, if the average particle size of the metal particles is 10 nm or less, the activity per mass of the electrode catalyst is more easily secured, which is preferable because it leads to cost reduction of the fuel cell.
The conductive carbon particles used as the catalyst carrier preferably have a specific surface area of 50 to 1500 m 2 / g. When the specific surface area of the conductive carbon particles is 50 m 2 / g or more, it is easy to increase the loading ratio of the electrode catalyst, and the output characteristics of the obtained anode-
The conductive carbon particles used as the catalyst carrier preferably have an average particle size in the range of 0.01 to 1.0 μm. When the average particle diameter of the conductive carbon particles is 0.01 μm or more, it becomes easier to sufficiently secure gas diffusibility in the anode
The anode side
The cathode side
The configurations of the anode side
As the anode side
Further, between the anode side
Next, a method for manufacturing the membrane-
First, a support means (for example, a support base) for supporting the
Then, in a state where the mask is arranged on the
Next, the
In this case, when the electrode catalyst having the same mass is used in the
As described above, the membrane-
Next, the mechanism by which the progress of poisoning of the anode-
First, the fuel cell of this embodiment is operated under a low humidification condition. The low humidification condition refers to a condition in which the dew point of the fuel gas supplied to the
Under the above conditions, the fuel gas is supplied to the
However, in the fuel cell, the membrane-

Since FIG. 7 is a schematic cross-sectional view, the number of flow paths and the like do not strictly coincide with each other in relation to FIG.
In the fuel cell (cell 100), the membrane-
That is, as shown in FIG. 7 to FIG. 10, the cathode
The fuel cell, the membrane-
Furthermore, the fuel cell, the membrane-
In the present embodiment, the
In this case, the
Further, the total surface area of the catalyst particles per unit area in the

Next, a method for manufacturing the membrane-
First, an ink for forming a cathode side catalyst layer was prepared. Catalyst-supported particles (Pt catalyst-supported carbon) in which platinum particles having an average particle diameter of about 3 nm are supported on carbon particles (Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd., 50% by mass is Pt) and have hydrogen ion conductivity A polymer electrolyte solution (manufactured by Asahi Glass Co., Ltd .: “Flemion” (registered trademark)) was dispersed in a mixed dispersion medium (mass ratio 1: 1) of ethanol and water. Further, the cathode side catalyst layer forming ink was prepared so that the ratio (W p / W cat ) of the mass W p of the polymer electrolyte to the mass W cat of the carrier of the catalyst-carrying particles was 1.0. Using this cathode-side catalyst layer forming ink, a cathode-side catalyst layer having a constant catalyst surface area in the entire catalyst layer region is converted into one of polymer electrolyte membranes (trade name “GSII” manufactured by Japan Gore-Tex Co., Ltd.). It was formed by applying to the main surface of the film by a spray method.

It was dispersed in a medium (mass ratio 1: 1). Furthermore, an anode side catalyst layer forming ink was prepared such that the ratio (W p / W cat ) of the mass W p of the polymer electrolyte to the mass W cat of the carrier of the catalyst-carrying particles was 1.0.
Next, a gas diffusion layer including a carbon paper subjected to a water repellent treatment and a water repellent carbon layer containing a fluororesin and carbon provided on one surface of the carbon paper is prepared. The membrane-
Finally, the
Specifically, as shown in FIG. 13, with respect to the cathode-
The current collector plate is composed of a total of 27 small pieces of 9 vertical × 3 horizontal. For each small piece of the current collector plate, the part corresponding to the most upstream area in this order along the cathode
(First Experiment Example)
In the first experimental example, the temperature of the
When the operation of the
Further, hydrogen gas having a dew point of 65 ° C. was supplied to the
Thereafter, the
Then, after mixing SO 2 and mixing for 220 hours, mixing SO 2 is stopped, and when power generation is continued with a clean oxidant gas, the amount of power generation in the decreased P1 to P18 region slightly increases, but SO 2 However, the power generation amount in the region of P19 to P27 remained increased.
With respect to the
As shown in FIG. 14, the current value at the
From the above results, it is understood that in the full humidification operation, the upstream portion of the cathode
(Second Experimental Example)
Also in the second experimental example, the
Next, the temperature of the
With respect to the
As shown in FIG. 16, in the
From the above results, when the
A possible and the oxidizing gas flowing through the
