Abstract
Description
In particular, in the field of optical communication, the present invention relates to generation of an optical random pulse pattern sequence for evaluation (code error rate, eye pattern measurement) of various optical devices, generation of an optical label pulse sequence for optical packet signals, optical CDMA (Code Division Multiple The present invention relates to an optical pulse pattern generator capable of generating a random signal for (Access: code division multiple access).
When evaluating an optical communication system and an optical communication device by measuring a signal error rate, a sufficiently long random pulse pattern sequence having a variable period of up to about 2 31 -1 bits is essential. When transmitting an optical packet signal, it is necessary to add a label pulse train in addition to the data signal (payload). Furthermore, in optical CDMA, it is necessary to modulate a data signal with a random pattern.
As a high-speed optical pulse pattern generator used for such an application, one having a configuration shown in FIG. 1A has been generally used (
Four types of 10 Gb / s random pulse pattern electric signals that are easy to generate are generated by the electric pulse pattern
Further, conventionally, an ultrahigh-speed optical pulse pattern exceeding 40 Gb / s has a configuration shown in FIG. 1B (Non-patent Document 3). In a signal speed region exceeding 40 Gb / s, it is difficult to generate a basic electric signal and perform timing control before multiplexing depending on the configuration of FIG. Therefore, for example, in order to generate a 160 Gb / s ultrafast optical pulse pattern signal, the conventional apparatus shown in FIG. 1B performs the following operation.
A basic 40 Gb / s optical signal is generated by an optical random pulse pattern
When generating a random pulsed optical signal having a sufficiently long period (2 31 -1 bits) necessary for optical communication and compliant with the ITU standard of 40 Gb / s or more, as shown in FIG. In the conventional method shown in the drawing, it is necessary to generate a plurality of 10 Gb / s random pulse pattern electrical signals and perform time multiplexing after adjusting the timing, which complicates the apparatus and increases the cost. In addition, since the main parts other than the light intensity modulation are all processed in the electrical domain, it is difficult to generate a signal exceeding 40 Gb / s.
On the other hand, when a 40 Gb / s random pulse optical signal compliant with, for example, the ITU standard is generated by the conventional method shown in FIG. 1B, the optical delay lines 12-2, 12-3, 12-4 are optical Delay line length differences of ˜2684 km, ˜5369 km, and ˜8053 km are required for the delay line 12-1, respectively, and the delay line length difference needs to be adjusted with an accuracy of ˜5 mm. Both the delay line length difference and the length fitting accuracy are inversely proportional to the required bit rate. Further, these optical delay lines 12-1 to 12-4 are fixed delay lines, and therefore do not support generation of variable period patterns. Considering the loss (˜0.2 dB / km) of the optical fiber that can be used as these optical delay lines, length adjustment accuracy, and cost, the conventional method shown in FIG. is there.
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described prior art, and the object thereof is various without using a pulse pattern generator and a signal processor in the electrical domain, a long optical delay line, and the like. To provide an optical pulse pattern generator capable of generating an ultrafast optical random pattern having a signal form (RZ (Return-to-Zero), NRZ (Non Return-to-Zero), etc.), period, bit rate, and pattern. It is in.
In order to achieve the above object, an optical pulse pattern generator according to a first aspect of the present invention includes a pulse light source that generates an optical pulse signal, an optical intensity modulator that modulates the optical pulse signal in accordance with an electric drive signal, and An optical tap that bisects the optical pulse signal modulated by the optical intensity modulator, a first optical coupler that bisects an optical pulse signal of one output of the optical tap, and the first optical coupler. The variable and fixed first and second optical delay lines having different delay amounts for respectively delaying the optical pulse signals of the first and second optical delay signals and the two optical output signals delayed by the first and second optical delay lines are multiplexed. The second optical coupler and the logical output of the two optical output signals obtained by combining with the second optical coupler are photoelectrically converted, and the logical output of the converted electric signal is used as the electric drive signal. A light receiver for supplying to the light intensity modulator; Characterized by comprising an output unit to retrieve the other output of the-up as an output signal.
In order to achieve the above object, an optical pulse pattern generator according to a second aspect of the present invention includes a pulse light source that generates an optical pulse signal, and an optical intensity modulation that modulates the optical pulse signal according to an electric drive signal. , An optical tap that bisects the optical pulse signal modulated by the optical intensity modulator, an optical coupler that bisects an optical pulse signal output from one of the optical taps, and an optical pulse signal from the optical coupler The first and second optical delay lines having different delay amounts and the two optical output signals delayed by the first and second optical delay lines are respectively photoelectrically converted, and the 2 A balanced light receiver that obtains a difference between the two electrical signals as a logical output of two optical output signals and supplies the obtained logical output to the light intensity modulator as the electrical drive signal; and the other output of the optical tap As the output signal Characterized by comprising an output unit to retrieve.
Here, the light intensity modulator has a Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure, and when there is no input of the electric drive signal, the output light intensity is close to the minimum value (or the maximum value), and It can be assumed that the electric bias is set so that the output light intensity is close to the maximum value (or the minimum value) when the electric drive signal is input.
A second optical tap is used as a first optical tap, and is connected between the pulse light source and the light intensity modulator separately from the first optical tap to bisect the output of the pulse light source. Of the second optical tap, a third optical coupler that causes the tap output light of the second optical tap and the output light of the first optical tap to interfere with each other, and the output unit is replaced with the third optical coupler. An output unit that extracts one output as an output signal may be further included.
Further, it can be assumed that a direct current (CW: Continuous Wave) light source is disposed at the position of the pulse light source instead of the pulse light source.
In addition, an optical gate element connected to the output unit may be further provided.
Each of the first and second optical delay lines is a variable optical delay line, and each of K delay line pairs having different lengths (K is an integer of 1 or more) and delay line pairs at both ends. And a total of K + 1 symmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometers each having a phase adjustment unit on at least one arm.
Alternatively, each of the first and second optical delay lines is a variable optical delay line, and the difference in length is ΔL, 2ΔL, 4ΔL,..., 2 P−2 ΔL, 2 P−1. A total of P + 1 symmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometers each having a phase adjustment unit on at least one arm between P delay line pairs of ΔL (P is an integer of 1 or more) and before and after a delay line pair at both ends. It can be assumed to be of a connected configuration.
In the present invention, as described above, the output of the pulse light source is variable or fixed having a length of about several times to several hundred times the bit rate length through the light intensity modulator, the optical tap, and the optical coupler. Two optical delay lines are connected, and the electric signal obtained from the output of the optical delay line via the light receiver is fed back as a driving electric signal for optical intensity modulation. An exclusive OR function is realized, and an optical linear feedback shift register is realized with parameters sufficiently realizable by the current manufacturing technology. As a result, according to the present invention, an optical pulse pattern generator capable of generating an ultrafast optical random pattern having various signal forms, periods, bit rates, and patterns only by adjusting the length of the optical delay line is provided. This can be easily realized without using a pulse pattern generator and signal processor in a region, a long optical delay line, and the like.

Among the
Further, the

Hereinafter, as a specific example of the present embodiment, the
Here, the
The signal propagation time of one round of the loop from the
FIG. 3 shows a configuration example of the variable delay lines 24-1 and 24-2 in FIG. As shown in FIG. 3, the variable delay line is formed on each arm of one of the input waveguides 30-1 and 30-2 on the thermo-optic phase shift thin film heater 31-1. ˜P + 1 (P: an integer of 1 or more) are individually arranged to form a plurality of symmetrical Mach-
One of the input waveguides 30-1 and 30-2 and one of the output waveguides 34-1 and 34-2 are used as input / output units, respectively. The length difference ΔL P between the asymmetric arm pairs 33a-1 to P, 33b- 1 to P is set to ΔL P = 2 P−1 ΔL 1 in this configuration example. By changing the switching state of each of the 2 × 2 optical switches 32-1 to P + 1, the characteristics between the input waveguides 30-1 and 30-2 and the output waveguides 34-1 and 34-2 are set to 0 to (2 P -1) the range of [Delta] L 1, the relative delay of the variable can be a total of 2 P as can be realized with minimum configuration in [Delta] L 1 increments. For example, at most P = 10, 1024 delay times can be set. Note that ΔL P may be an arbitrary value, but the method of changing by two times as described above is the most efficient. Moreover, although increasing the [Delta] L P from left to right in FIG. 3, this sequence may be arbitrary, increasing the [Delta] L P from right to left, or order may of course be random.
As the variable delay lines 24-1 and 24-2 in FIG. 2, for example, other configuration examples as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 can be used.

The variable delay line shown in FIG. 4 includes an

When the two inputs A and B to the optical coupler 23-2 are both 1, all light is output to an arm different from the optical wiring 27-3 due to interference of light waves. From Table 1, it can be seen that the two inputs A and B and the output C logically have an exclusive OR relationship represented by the following

Therefore, as an optical output to be output from the output unit 27-4 to the outside of the apparatus, as shown in FIG. 7B, an M (Maximum Length Shift Register) sequence (more precisely, M) It can be seen that the
Further, the
In the same manner, an M sequence having a sequence length of 15 (more precisely, an inverted version of 0 and 1 of the M sequence) can be realized. Thus, according to the optical pulse pattern generator of this embodiment, it can be seen that various sequences can be easily generated by adjusting the delay of the variable delay lines 24-1 and 24-2. Further, according to the optical pulse pattern generator of the present embodiment, a variable random pulse pattern sequence having a variable bit rate can be generated in the same manner.
For the sake of simplicity, an example of generating a pulse pattern with a sequence length of 15 has been shown. However, generation of a pulse pattern with a long sequence length such as 2 23 -1 and 2 31 -1 is also possible with the variable delay line 24- This can be achieved only by setting 1,24-2 to several to several tens of times the delay corresponding to 1-bit time slot time (in the case of 160 Gb / s, a delay of 1.25 mm).

From Table 2, it can be seen that when the sign is ignored, the input signal strengths D and E and the output signal amplitude F logically have an exclusive OR relationship represented by the following Expression 3.

As the third optical coupler 73-3, a two-waveguide proximity type directional coupler (3 dB directional coupler) having a strength coupling ratio of 50% was used, and the phase difference was set to π / 2 + Sπ (S: integer). The intensity branching ratio adjustment of the optical taps 72-1 and 72-2 and the optical couplers 73-1 to 73-3 using a directional coupler changes the proximity waveguide length at the time of fabrication in the case of the waveguide proximity type.
