Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a display device capable of displaying a stereoscopic image or displaying two images according to directions.
Two light sources that alternately blink so as to illuminate the entire surface of the liquid crystal display unit, a liquid crystal display unit that alternately displays left and right parallax image data in synchronization with the blinking of the light source, and the image data for the right eye and the image for the left eye A memory for storing data, wherein either the right-eye image data or the left-eye image data is the latest input image data, the other is the immediately preceding image data displayed one field before, and the latest input image data A stereoscopic image display apparatus that uses immediately preceding image data for tone compensation processing is disclosed. In this stereoscopic image display device, a gradation conversion table is created for the compensation process of the gradation value of the latest input image data. The gradation conversion table emphasizes the change from the previous image data to the latest input image data as the gradation voltage for the image display of the latest frame. The applied voltage is changed according to the time from the writing time to the lighting time of the light source. Applying the gradation voltage for image display of the latest frame to the liquid crystal display panel using this gradation conversion table, the response speed of the liquid crystal to the gradation change can be accelerated, and the response delay is compensated. Can do. In addition, since the gradation conversion table is created corresponding to each gate line, the gradation value is compensated for each gate line, so that it is possible to prevent the occurrence of uneven brightness in the gate scan direction. Deterioration can be prevented (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
In the stereoscopic image display device of
In a time-division stereoscopic image display device, in two light sources that alternately flash and illuminate different directions on the left and right from the back of the liquid crystal panel, the left-eye image of the parallax image is displayed when the light source that illuminates the left direction from the front is turned on When the light source that illuminates the right direction from the front is turned on, the right-eye image of the parallax image is displayed and stereoscopic display is performed.
At this time, the light quantity of the outgoing light to the left and the outgoing light to the right is the difference in luminance between the LEDs (light emitting diodes) arranged on both sides of the light guide plate and the structural symmetry of the illumination device used as the light source. It may vary depending on the conditions. In addition, the liquid crystal panel itself may have viewing angle anisotropy, and the VT characteristics (voltage-transmittance characteristics) are different between the left eye direction and the right eye direction when facing the liquid crystal panel. Characteristics may vary.
Therefore, even when the left eye image display and right eye image display are performed using the same gradation conversion table and the same correction voltage is applied to the same gradation change, the effect is not the same. Alternatively, there is a problem that a ghost or a double image can be seen on both sides and good stereoscopic viewing cannot be performed.
Further, in the stereoscopic image display device disclosed in

When the input image data is the second image data and the immediately preceding image data is the first image data, the data to be output to the liquid crystal display panel is compensated. Even in this case, the image data can be optimally corrected, ghosts and double images are prevented, and a good image is displayed.

FIG. 8 is a diagram for explaining a gradation change in a parallax image displayed by the time-division stereoscopic image display device shown in FIG. In the stereoscopic image display device, left and right parallax image data are alternately displayed to perform stereoscopic display, and in order to prevent flickering, for example, the left and right images are displayed at a high rate of 40 times or more per second.
As shown in FIG. 8, the same display target is displayed as a left-

Conventionally, the latest input image data is the left-eye image, and the immediately preceding image data displayed one field before is the right-eye image (or the immediately preceding image data is the left-eye image and the latest input image data is the right-eye image). Compensation processing is performed in the same way both when changing from a right-eye image to a left-eye image and vice versa. It was.
However, as shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, since the light source or the liquid crystal of the
Therefore, in the present embodiment, the
The
The
FIG. 2 is an example of a conversion table in the
For example, when the gradation of the previous image data is “64” and the gradation of the latest input image data is “128”, a value larger than the gradation “128” is set so as to increase the difference between the two. For example, the gradation “144” is output data. Since a voltage corresponding to the gradation “144” is applied to the liquid crystal and the response of the liquid crystal is accelerated, a desired gradation “128” can be displayed after one frame period.
In the
A method for creating the conversion table will be described.
A method for creating a conversion table used for compensation processing when the gradation changes from the right-
In FIG. 8, when the image is observed from the left oblique direction, more precisely, from the position where the left eye is located when facing the liquid crystal panel, only the image for the left eye is observed if the optimal compensation processing is performed on the image data. The object should be visible in a uniform gradation in both area A and area B. However, if the gradation value set as the output data so as to emphasize the gradation change from the background to the object is smaller than the optimum value, the brightness is not sufficiently increased and the area B becomes darker than the area A, and the optimum If it is larger than the value, the luminance is too high and the region B looks brighter than the region A. Based on such an observation result, an optimum value is obtained by adjusting the gradation value for compensation processing so that the luminance of the region B becomes uniform with the region A. In the conversion table, the optimum gradation value for compensation processing obtained as described above is arranged at the intersection of the row corresponding to the background gradation value at this time and the column corresponding to the gradation value of the object. . Similarly, for other gradations, the optimum gradation value for compensation processing is obtained and the table is filled.
However, as a matter of course, it is not necessary to implement all combinations of 256 gradations × 256 gradations, and a table is completed by selecting a plurality of arbitrary gradations and filling the table, for example, by linear interpolation.
The table created here is a conversion table (first conversion table T1) used for compensation processing when the gradation changes from the right-
The image signal from the signal source 5 is simultaneously supplied with a signal for identifying the left-eye image or the right-eye image together with the left and right parallax image data, and according to this signal, the left eye of the two conversion tables for each frame. The conversion table used for the compensation process for the image data for use or the conversion table used for the compensation process for the image data for the right eye is selected and used.
As described above, in the present embodiment, the first conversion table is used when changing from the right-eye image to the left-eye image, and the second conversion table is used when changing from the left-eye image to the right-eye image. Since the correction is made in accordance with the change, when the stereoscopic image shown in FIG. 8 is displayed, a double image and a ghost are prevented from being generated in both the left eye image and the right eye image, and a good stereoscopic image is observed. There is.
In the present embodiment, the case where one

As described above, in the present embodiment, in the first embodiment, the two light sources are arranged on the left and right sides of the liquid
In the present embodiment, the images are sorted and displayed in the vertical direction of the liquid

The display device according to the third embodiment of the present invention is a liquid crystal panel in which the liquid
The polarity inversion driving method is a method in which the polarity state is inverted for each frame and the image is displayed in the first polarity state or the second polarity state. The frame inversion driving method is a one-frame period in the liquid crystal panel. Each time, the polarity of the voltage applied to the pixel electrode is reversed with respect to the counter electrode voltage (common voltage), resulting in an afterimage phenomenon called “burn-in” caused by the application of a DC voltage for a long time and the characteristics of the switching circuit. Flicker and the like generated from the can be prevented.

Therefore, in the present embodiment, the two conversion tables of the
In the conversion table of the present embodiment, the polarity state of the frame in which the left-eye image or the right-eye image is displayed is determined by, for example, examining the voltage waveform using an oscilloscope. It is created in accordance with the method described in the first embodiment.
In this case, for example, the left-eye image is displayed in the second state and the right-eye image is displayed in the first polarity state so that the polarity states of the corresponding frames are always the same for the left and right images. If it is set so as to correspond to the above, by using the conversion table creation method described in the first embodiment, the gradation that inevitably includes the influence of the structural anisotropy and the influence of the voltage polarity. The change will be observed, and no further work such as correction will occur.
Note that which of the two conversion tables is used is determined by identifying the polarity of each frame based on the frame signal and selecting the corresponding conversion table.
Although only the polarity of the voltage applied to the pixel electrode is shown in this embodiment mode, the counter electrode voltage may be constant at this time, or the signal line may be inverted by synchronizing the polarity with the timing of frame inversion. A “common inversion driving method” that halves the applied voltage amplitude may be used.
As described above, in the stereoscopic image display apparatus according to the present embodiment, a good stereoscopic image was observed without any ghost or double image being generated by the image processing unit according to the present embodiment.
Further, although the stereoscopic image display device has been described in the present embodiment, it is needless to say that the present invention can also be applied to the two-direction image display device shown in the second embodiment.
Furthermore, not only in the stereoscopic image display device and the two-image display device by direction, but also when displaying a moving image on a normal LCD, if the compensation voltage changes with the polarity reversal of the applied voltage, the image flickers. Since the display quality is deteriorated, this embodiment can be applied to solve this problem.

Using the first conversion table T1 q and the second conversion table T2 q , the change from the right-eye image to the left-eye image, and the left-eye image to the right-eye image, as in the third embodiment. By performing the compensation process for the change to, a good three-dimensional image was observed without appearing to have noise in stripes during image display.
Note that which of the two conversion tables is used is selected for each line according to the polarity of the applied voltage at that time.
