Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a fuel cell system, and more particularly to an improvement in a configuration for efficiently discharging water circulated from a fuel cell stack in order to maintain a wet state of an electrolyte membrane of the fuel cell stack.
A PEM type fuel cell main body, which is widely used nowadays, has a structure in which a polymer solid electrolyte membrane is sandwiched between a fuel electrode and an air electrode.
Both the fuel electrode and the air electrode are composed of a catalyst layer containing a catalyst material, and an electrode device that supports the catalyst layer and supplies a reaction gas and further functions as a current collector.
On the further outside of the fuel electrode and the air electrode, a separator (connector plate) provided with a gas flow groove for uniformly supplying the reaction gas from the outside into the electrode and discharging excess gas to the outside is laminated. This separator collects current to prevent gas permeation and to take out the generated current to the outside.
The fuel cell main body and the separator constitute a unit unit of the fuel cell. In an actual fuel cell system, many such unit units are stacked in series to form a stack.
In the fuel cell main body, heat having a heat amount substantially corresponding to the generated power is generally generated. Therefore, in order to prevent the fuel cell body from excessively heating up, a cooling plate is built in the stack. A cooling medium such as air or water is circulated through the cooling plate to cool the stack, thereby maintaining the fuel cell body at a desired temperature.
The electromotive force of the fuel cell having such a structure is that, as a result of the fuel gas being supplied to the fuel electrode side (anode) and the oxidizing gas being supplied to the air electrode side, electrons are generated as the electrochemical reaction proceeds. Generated by extracting electrons to an external circuit.
That is, the hydrogen ions obtained at the fuel electrode (anode) move to the air electrode (cathode) side in the electrolyte membrane containing moisture in the form of protons (H + ), and are obtained at the fuel electrode (anode). The extracted electrons move to the air electrode (cathode) side through an external load and react with oxygen in the oxidizing gas (including air) to produce water, thereby extracting electric energy by a series of electrochemical reactions. Because it can.
In the above, protons take a state of hydration when moving from the fuel electrode toward the air electrode, so that when the electrolyte membrane dries, the ionic conductivity decreases and the energy conversion efficiency decreases. Resulting in.
Therefore, it is necessary to supply moisture to the solid electrolyte membrane in order to maintain good ion conduction. For this purpose, the moisture is supplied by humidifying the fuel gas and the oxidizing gas.
On the anode electrode side, in order to properly continue the electrode reaction, it is necessary to maintain the wet state of hydrogen gas more, and various proposals have conventionally been made on humidifying the fuel gas.
On the other hand, a method for humidifying process air has been proposed, but in order to reliably humidify an air electrode heated by reaction heat (usually about 80 ° C.), normal temperature process air is humidified. It is necessary to heat in advance. This is because the saturated water vapor amount is matched with the environment around the air electrode. Therefore, the humidifier has a complicated configuration that requires a water supply function and a process air temperature raising function.
In the fuel cell device disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 7-14599, an injection nozzle is provided in the air introduction pipe, and water necessary for humidification is sprayed into the process air. When this injection nozzle is on the upstream side of the compressor, the sprayed water is evaporated by the heat accompanying the compression of the process air, and humidifies the air electrode in the state of water vapor. In this apparatus, an air humidifier is further added as necessary.
In any case, in the conventional technique, water is supplied to the electrolyte membrane by mixing water vapor into the air.
Further, in the fuel cell device disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 9-266004, gas discharged from the fuel electrode (this exhaust gas contains unreacted hydrogen gas) in order to reduce the concentration of discharged hydrogen gas. Is introduced into the air electrode side, and hydrogen gas therein is burned in the air electrode. Since reaction water (recovered water) is generated in the combustion, such a fuel cell device can supply sufficient water to the electrolyte membrane without adding a humidifier.
Further research revealed the following:
When a fuel cell is composed of an electrolyte membrane with a thickness less than a predetermined value, the water produced by the reaction of protons with oxygen in the air at the air electrode reversely osmosis through the electrolyte membrane from the air electrode to the hydrogen electrode. To do. Since the electrolyte membrane can be maintained in a suitable wet state by the reversely osmotic water, it is not necessary to humidify hydrogen (fuel gas) on the hydrogen electrode (anode electrode) side.
However, on the air electrode (cathode electrode) side, the introduced air (oxidizing gas) flow evaporates the water on the air electrode side of the electrolyte membrane, so that the moisture on the air electrode side of the electrolyte membrane is insufficient. .
Therefore, in Japanese Patent Application No. 10-67885, the present applicant has proposed a water direct injection type fuel cell system in which water is supplied in a liquid state to the air electrode of the fuel cell body.
According to the fuel cell system configured as described above, water supplied to the surface of the air electrode preferentially takes away latent heat from the air, so that evaporation of moisture from the electrolyte membrane on the air electrode side is prevented. Therefore, the electrolyte membrane always maintains a uniform wet state without being dried on the air electrode side. Therefore, the performance and / or durability of the fuel cell system is improved.
Furthermore, when water is supplied to the air electrode in a liquid state, the water supplied to the surface of the air electrode takes heat from the air electrode itself and cools it, so that the temperature of the fuel cell body can be controlled. That is, the fuel cell body can be cooled without adding a cooling plate to the fuel cell stack.
As a result of intensive studies on such a direct water injection type, the present inventor has found the following problems to be solved.
In other words, in order to increase the efficiency of the fuel cell system and to further reduce the size and weight of the fuel cell system, there is a problem of how efficiently the liquid water supplied to the fuel cell stack can be discharged from the fuel cell stack and circulated. Become.
Such water countermeasures are not limited to direct water injection type fuel cells. Even in the case of conventional fuel cells that humidify process air, efficient draining of water from the fuel cell stack is a solution to ensure power generation efficiency, especially when the size is increased to be applied to vehicles. It will be a challenge.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a fuel cell stack capable of efficiently discharging water and a fuel cell system including the same.
Still another object is to provide a fuel cell system having a novel configuration.
Still another object is to provide a compact fuel cell system.
A first aspect of the present invention is a fuel cell stack that achieves at least one of the above objects, and the configuration thereof is as follows.
A fuel cell stack configured by stacking a plurality of unit units of a fuel cell,
A fuel cell stack, wherein each unit unit has a lower edge inclined.
According to the invention of the first aspect configured as described above, the lower edge of the unit unit of the fuel cell is inclined, so that the moisture in the unit unit falls to the lower edge due to gravity, and the unit unit's It gathers at one corner of the lower edge according to the inclination of the lower edge. Therefore, if a drain is provided at this corner, water can be efficiently discharged from here.
The inclination of the lower edge of the unit unit of the fuel cell is achieved by tilting the unit unit as a whole or by designing the unit unit so that only the lower edge is inclined.
In one embodiment of the present invention suitable for a vehicle, each unit unit is overlapped in the width direction of the vehicle to form a fuel cell stack, and each unit unit is inclined with respect to the traveling direction of the vehicle. That is, the lower edge of each unit unit faces the traveling direction of the vehicle and intersects the horizontal line. Further, the fuel cell stack itself is inclined with respect to the width direction of the vehicle. That is, the fuel cell stack is tilted three-dimensionally, so that water is concentrated at one corner and discharged from there.
It is preferable to provide a pan (water recovery device) for receiving water discharged from the unit unit below the fuel cell stack. The pan itself is also tilted to facilitate water recovery.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a fuel cell stack is configured by overlapping a plurality of unit units in the vehicle width direction, and the lower edge of each unit unit is inclined with respect to the traveling direction of the vehicle. And the water receiving pan attached to the lower side of the fuel cell stack was inclined in the width direction of the vehicle. The frequency of the vehicle tilting in the width direction during traveling is less than the frequency of tilting in the traveling direction. Therefore, water flows smoothly along the inclination of the pan and is collected. On the other hand, in the unit unit of the fuel cell, the air flow path (the water supplied to the air electrode flows here) is narrow, so even if the inclination slightly changes, the flow of water is hardly affected at the lower edge. There is no.
If the water recovery device is arranged under the fuel cell stack, the water in the fuel cell stack falls to the water recovery device by its own weight. Therefore, it is not necessary to provide an auxiliary device (such as a pump) for forcibly moving water from the fuel cell stack to the water recovery device. Thus, a lighter and smaller system can be achieved.
The fuel cell system according to the second aspect of the present invention is configured as follows.
A fuel cell stack and a water supply system that supplies water to the fuel cell stack and collects water from the exhausted air and / or exhausted fuel gas, and a water tank of the water supply system is located below the fuel cell stack. A fuel cell system which is arranged.
According to the fuel cell system configured as described above, since the water tank is disposed below the fuel cell stack, the liquid water discharged from the fuel cell stack falls to the water tank by its own weight. Go. Therefore, it is not necessary to provide an auxiliary device (such as a pump) for forcibly moving the water discharged from the fuel cell stack to the water tank. Thus, a lighter and smaller system can be achieved.
In addition, in order to flow water more smoothly from the fuel cell stack to the water tank, it is preferable that the piping connecting the two always maintain the inclination with the fuel cell stack on the upper side.
The invention of the second aspect is more effective in a system that needs to discharge a large amount of water from the fuel cell stack, such as a direct water injection type.
The fuel cell system according to the third aspect of the present invention is configured as follows.
A fuel cell stack; and a fuel supply system for supplying fuel gas to the fuel cell stack and discharging the fuel gas from the fuel cell stack, and an exhaust valve for the fuel gas is provided below the fuel cell stack. A fuel cell system characterized by that.
In the fuel cell stack, the wet state must be maintained even on the fuel electrode side as described above. Therefore, water may accumulate on the fuel electrode side, which may cause a problem such as blocking the fuel gas flow path. In particular, in a type in which the fuel gas is intermittently circulated in order to achieve complete combustion of the fuel gas, it is required to reliably discharge water from the fuel gas flow path.
According to the fuel cell system of the second aspect, the fuel gas exhaust valve is provided below the fuel cell stack. Therefore, the water on the fuel electrode side of the fuel cell stack falls to the exhaust valve by its own weight, and when the exhaust valve is opened, this water is also discharged together with the fuel exhaust gas.
In order to assist the fall of water from the fuel electrode to the exhaust valve, it is preferable that the pipe connecting the two is disposed at least downward from the fuel cell stack. That is, this pipe always maintains the inclination with the fuel cell stack side as the upper side.
From the same viewpoint as described above, the fuel gas discharge port of the fuel cell stack is preferably disposed below the fuel electrode. More preferably, the fuel gas discharge port is provided at the lowest position of the fuel cell stack.
In order to increase the water discharge efficiency, the position of the fuel gas discharge port is determined as described above. On the other hand, the fuel gas introduction port is provided at a position higher than the fuel gas discharge port so that the fuel gas does not flow from the top to the bottom and prevent water from falling. The fuel gas discharge port is preferably located higher than the fuel electrode. More preferably, the fuel gas inlet is provided at the highest position in the fuel cell stack.

As can be seen from FIGS. 3 and 4, the

As described above, when the unit unit U is inclined, the water supplied to the
In this way, the water discharged from the unit unit U drops on the

FIG. 9 is a diagram in which the
As can be seen from FIG. 9, the

As described above, all of the hydrogen
