Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus, and more particularly to an image forming apparatus that performs a calibration operation at a predetermined timing.
As a conventional image forming apparatus, the toner consumption is calculated by performing dot count of image data, and when the cumulative toner consumption exceeds a predetermined amount, the toner near-end (the remaining amount of toner) is detected and the toner near-end is detected. After the image is detected, a special image pattern (patch) for determining the toner remaining amount is formed, the patch density is detected by an optical sensor, and the patch density falls below a predetermined value. It is known that toner end (no remaining toner) is determined (for example, see Patent Document 1).

By the way, conventionally, an image forming apparatus that performs a calibration operation for performing density correction and color correction is known (for example, see
An object of the present invention is to suppress wasteful toner consumption after a toner near end is detected in an image forming apparatus that performs a calibration operation.
The image forming apparatus according to claim 1 is an image forming apparatus that performs a calibration operation at a predetermined timing, and includes an image forming unit, a density detecting unit, a calibration unit, a toner near-end detecting unit, and a toner end. Means. The image forming unit forms the first patch using toner during the calibration operation. The density detection unit can detect the density of the toner image including the first patch. The calibration control unit controls the calibration operation based on the density of the first patch detected by the density detection unit. The toner near end detection means detects the toner near end. The toner end detection means detects the toner end. When the toner near end is detected, the image forming apparatus stops the subsequent calibration operation, and the image forming unit forms a second patch having a density lower than that of the first patch. The toner end detection unit detects the toner end based on the density of the second patch detected by the density detection unit.
In this image forming apparatus, until the toner near end is detected, the first patch is formed and its density is detected, and calibration operations such as density correction and color correction are performed based on the density. When the toner near end is detected, the subsequent calibration operation is stopped and the toner end is detected using the second patch.
Here, since the calibration operation is not performed after the toner near end is detected, the toner consumption is suppressed, and an image having a good density is obtained during the compensation number of sheets that can be printed from the toner near end to the toner end. Can do.
Further, since the toner end detection is performed using the second patch having a density lower than that of the first patch, it is possible to accurately detect the toner end while suppressing the toner consumption.
An image forming apparatus according to a second aspect is the apparatus according to the first aspect, wherein the image forming means forms the second patch during non-image formation.
In this image forming apparatus, the formation of the second patch image is performed during non-image formation other than the time during which the normal image forming operation for forming an image other than the patch is performed. , Toner remaining amount can be grasped in real time. Examples of the non-image formation include, for example, intervals between printing operations for each page in continuous printing (hereinafter also referred to as “paper interval”).
According to a third aspect of the present invention, in the apparatus of the first or second aspect, even after the toner near end is detected, the image forming apparatus is turned off until the toner end is detected. When turned on, the calibration operation is canceled after stopping the calibration operation.
When the power is turned on / off from the detection of the toner near end to the end of the toner, it is preferable to perform a calibration operation at the time of startup. Therefore, in this image forming apparatus, the stopped calibration operation is performed only when the power is turned on.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, in the image forming apparatus according to any one of the first to third aspects, the image forming unit employs a touch-down developing system.
In an image forming apparatus employing a touch-down development method, a magnetic brush is formed on a magnetic roller disposed adjacent to a developing roller during an image forming operation, and only toner is transferred to the developing roller. The electrostatic latent image is visualized by the toner. In this type of image forming apparatus, in particular, a ghost image is generated or a toner end is erroneously detected in spite of a toner density sufficient for normal image formation.
However, in the image forming apparatus according to the fourth aspect, after the appropriate density correction and color correction are performed by the calibration operation, the toner layer thickness change on the developing roller and the toner remaining amount are detected by the second patch. Generation of ghost images and erroneous detection of toner end can be suppressed.
An image forming apparatus according to a fifth aspect is the tandem type color printer according to any one of the first to fourth aspects.
According to the present invention, since the calibration operation is not performed after the toner near end is detected, the toner consumption is suppressed, and an image having a good density is compensated between the number of compensation sheets that can be printed from the toner near end to the toner end. Can be obtained.
Further, since the toner end detection is performed using the second patch having a density lower than that of the first patch, it is possible to accurately detect the toner end while suppressing the toner consumption.

The control unit 30 (calibration control means, toner near end detection means, toner end detection means) is composed of a microcomputer having a CPU and a memory. As shown in FIG. 3, each part such as an image forming unit 4 and a density sensor 55 is provided. It is connected to the. The

<Operation of Image Forming Apparatus>
Next, the operation of the
When the
In the calibration operation, as shown in FIG. 6, first, the
When the calibration operation is completed and a print job with image data is acquired from an external PC or the like, a normal image forming operation is performed based on the print job (S11). At this time, the dot count of the image data is performed by the
On the other hand, if the number of dots counted in the image forming operation in step S14 is within the predetermined value (Yes in S16) and the number of printed sheets is within the predetermined number (Yes in S17), the calibration operation is performed. A
When the toner container 50 is replaced, the accumulated number of dots for toner near-end detection is cleared and the stop of the calibration operation is released, and is performed for each predetermined number of printed sheets as before the stop. .
According to the
In addition, since the
<Other embodiments>
(A) The second patch may be formed not only on the intermediate transfer belt but also on a photosensitive drum or recording paper. In the former case, the density sensor is disposed in the vicinity of the photosensitive drum and between the developing device and the transfer device. In the latter case, the second patch is formed at the same position as the density sensor 55 described above, and the second patch is formed in accordance with the paper transport timing.
(B) The image forming apparatus may not include a toner container but may include a developing device that can be replaced by itself. In this case, in order to determine the deterioration degree (development performance) of the developer, the development bias is fixed, a special image pattern is formed as the third patch, and the development performance is detected by detecting the density of this patch. You may make it perform the operation | movement which detects.
As the developing bias for forming the third patch, for example, Vdc = 200 V, Vpp = 1.6 kV, frequency f = 2.7 kHz, Duty ratio = 27% is applied to the developing roller, and the magnetic roller Are applied with Vdc = 350V, Vpp = 300V, frequency f = 2.7 kHz, and duty ratio = 27%.
Such a development performance detection operation is preferably performed in combination with the calibration operation. However, during the period from the near end detection to the toner end, it is stopped together with the calibration operation, so that more toner is consumed. The amount can be reduced.
(C) The second patch is not limited to the interval between sheets, and may be formed at other timings.
(D) The image forming apparatus may use a one-component developer as a developer. The image forming apparatus is not limited to a tandem color machine, and may be a copying machine, a multifunction machine, or the like.
