Description
The present invention relates to a thermoelectric element and a method for manufacturing the same, and more particularly to a thermoelectric element effective for improving thermoelectric performance and a method for manufacturing the same.
As a conventional technique related to the present invention, for example, there is a thermoelectric conversion element described in Patent Document 1 and a manufacturing method thereof. The purpose of this is to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit by the quantum effect of making nanowires of thinner thermoelectric materials. Electrodeposition is performed on columnar pores of porous bodies made of silicon, germanium, or a mixture of germanium and silicon. Alternatively, the thermoelectric material is nanowired to a diameter of 0.5 nm or more and less than 15 nm by filling the thermoelectric material with a catalytic reaction method.
According to such a patent document 1, in order to produce a quantum effect, the thermoelectric material must be nanowired to have a diameter of 0.5 nm to 15 nm. However, if it is possible to improve the thermoelectric performance without necessarily forming a nanowire in this way, that is, even in the order of μm where the diameter is larger and the quantum effect cannot be expected. If improvement of this can be aimed at, it becomes advantageous, such as being able to aim at the ease of manufacture.
The present invention has been made based on such a viewpoint, and provides a thermoelectric element capable of improving the thermoelectric performance without necessarily thinning the thermoelectric material to the extent that a quantum effect is generated, and a method for manufacturing the thermoelectric element. For the purpose.
In the present invention, the template having low thermal conductivity and insulating properties, the template having a plurality of mutually independent fine pores penetrating from the upper surface to the lower surface, and having a lower melting point than the template, a vacuum environment The above-mentioned object is achieved by a thermoelectric element having a thermoelectric material that is press-fitted into the pores of the template and filled in the pores by being pressurized in a molten state.
According to this, since the thermal conductivity of the template is low, the thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric material pressed into the pores of the template is on the order of μm, for example, 50 μm, and the thermal conductivity is smaller than that of the bulk thermoelectric element. Become.
Further, in the present invention, a template having low thermal conductivity and insulating properties, the template having a plurality of independent pores penetrating from the upper surface to the lower surface, and a thermoelectric material having a melting point lower than that of the template, Is disposed in the furnace, and a melting step for melting only the thermoelectric material in a vacuum state, a press-in step for applying pressure to the thermoelectric material in the molten state and press-fitting the thermoelectric material into the pores of the template, and press-fitting The above object is achieved by a method of manufacturing a thermoelectric element including a cooling step of gradually cooling the thermoelectric substance later to solidify the thermoelectric substance. Thereby, the thermoelectric element mentioned above can be manufactured.
In addition, the thermoelectric material can be pressed into the pores of the template by pressurization using an inert gas or liquid that does not affect the thermoelectric material. The magnitude of the applied pressure depends on the diameter of the pores of the template, and a larger pressure is applied as the diameter decreases. Further, since a liquid is likely to have a higher pressure than a gas, whether to pressurize with a gas or pressurize with a liquid is selected according to the target pressure.
In addition, when the thermoelectric material is cooled, the orientation of the crystal is controlled so that the crystals of the thermoelectric material are aligned in one direction by gradually cooling the template while giving a predetermined temperature difference in the vertical direction or the horizontal direction. Is called. Thereby, since the Seebeck coefficient can be improved and the thermal conductivity can be further reduced, the thermoelectric performance index ZT = (α 2 / ρκ) · T (α: Seebeck coefficient, ρ: low efficiency, κ : Thermal conductivity, T: absolute temperature) can be increased, and the thermoelectric performance can be improved without the need for thinning such that the quantum effect necessarily occurs. This does not prevent further thinning of the thermoelectric material so that a quantum effect is generated.
Furthermore, after the thermoelectric material is cooled, heat treatment is performed on one of the upper surface or the lower surface of the template at a temperature close to or higher than the melting point of the thermoelectric material and at a temperature lower than the temperature at which the template does not melt. The crystal orientation is controlled so that the thermoelectric crystals are aligned in one direction. Similarly, the Seebeck coefficient α can be improved and the thermal conductivity κ can be reduced, and the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT can be further improved.
According to the present invention, since the thermal conductivity of the template is low, the thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric material press-fitted into the pores of the template can be made smaller than that of the bulk thermoelectric element even when the diameter is on the order of μm, for example. Can do.
In addition, since the thermoelectric material is pressed by pressurizing the thermoelectric material using an inert gas or liquid that does not affect the thermoelectric material, it is possible to apply a pressure according to the diameter of the pores of the template. it can.
Furthermore, by controlling the crystal orientation of the thermoelectric material, the Seebeck coefficient can be improved and the thermal conductivity can be greatly reduced, and the thermoelectric figure of merit can be greatly improved.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing an example of a thermoelectric element according to the present invention. Reference numeral 1 is a template, and
The template 1 is made of glass in this example, has a low thermal conductivity, for example, about 1 W / mK or less, has an insulating property, and includes a plurality of
The
According to the thermoelectric element having such a configuration, since the thermal conductivity of the template 1 is low, the
FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram showing an example of a manufacturing apparatus used for manufacturing a thermoelectric element according to the present invention, and reference numeral 10 is a reactor.
The reaction furnace 10 includes a furnace body 11, a
A
FIG. 3 is a view showing an example of a method for installing the template 1. In this example, the bottom of the
Returning to FIG. 2, the reaction furnace 10 is provided with a
The reactor 10 is provided with an
In this example, since the handling is convenient and the price is low, the molten
Using such a manufacturing apparatus, the template 1 and the bismuth Bi as the
First, the
Subsequently, a pressurization process is started. That is, the second and third high-
After bismuth Bi, which is the
The thermoelectric element manufactured in this way is controlled in crystal orientation so that the crystals of bismuth Bi as the
In the orientation control by cooling, the orientation control of the crystal of bismuth Bi as the
In the orientation control by heat treatment, after the above-described cooling step, the temperature is close to the melting point of bismuth Bi, which is the
In such crystal orientation control, since bismuth Bi has diamagnetism, for example, if orientation control is performed in a magnetic field in which the upper surface of the template 1 is an N pole and the lower surface is an S pole, Bismuth Bi crystals are more easily aligned in one direction, and orientation control can be further improved.
The thermoelectric performance index ZT is obtained by the Herman method for the thermoelectric element in which the crystal orientation is controlled, the thermoelectric element in which the crystal orientation is not controlled, and the bulk bismuth, and the Seebeck coefficient is based on the thermoelectric performance index ZT. α and thermal conductivity κ were calculated. In these thermoelectric elements, the template 1 is made of lead glass, and bismuth Bi is used as the

As shown in FIG. 5, the thermoelectric performance number ZT is only slightly improved in the thermoelectric element B that is not subjected to the orientation control as compared with the bulk bismuth C, but the thermoelectric element in which the orientation control is performed. In A, it is greatly improved. As apparent from the Seebeck coefficient α shown in FIG. 6, the thermoelectric element B that is not subjected to orientation control has an improved Seebeck coefficient α as compared with the bulk bismuth C, and the thermoelectric element A that is subjected to orientation control. It is further improved. Further, as is apparent from the thermal conductivity κ shown in FIG. 7, even in the thermoelectric element B that is not subjected to the orientation control, the thermal conductivity κ is reduced compared to the bulk bismuth C, and the orientation control is performed. Further, in the thermoelectric element A, it is further reduced.
