Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, and particularly to a technique effective when applied to a liquid crystal display device using an alignment film.
In recent years, liquid crystal display devices are frequently used as display devices. In particular, the liquid crystal display device is thin, lightweight, and power-saving, and thus is used as a display unit for large televisions and portable devices.
However, since a liquid crystal display device uses a liquid crystal composition, an alignment film is required. In addition, the liquid crystal display device has a structure in which a liquid crystal composition is sealed between two substrates. Therefore, a sealing material for sealing the liquid crystal composition is provided around the substrate. In addition, the alignment film and the sealing material are provided close to each other due to the demand for narrowing the frame.
Patent Document 1 describes a liquid crystal display device in which an alignment film is formed even in a sealing material formation region. However, in Patent Document 1, the process of removing the alignment film in the seal formation region is increasing, and the simplification of the process and the adhesive strength between the alignment film and the seal material are not taken into consideration.
In general, the alignment film is formed in a predetermined region on the substrate by offset printing or the like. That is, the alignment film is formed in the region partitioned by the sealing material sufficiently away from the sealing material. Therefore, the problem that the alignment film has on the sealing material has not been considered.
However, there is an increasing demand for reducing the peripheral portion of the display area, and so-called narrowing of the frame is progressing. For this reason, the area of the peripheral portion where the sealing material is formed is also reduced, and the distance between the sealing material and the end portion of the alignment film is also reduced.
In considering the further narrowing of the frame, if the positional deviation of the alignment film is taken into consideration, there is a high possibility that the alignment film forming region and the sealing material overlap. However, it has been found that if a sealing material is formed on the alignment film, the adhesive strength of the sealing material is significantly reduced.
The present invention has been made based on such circumstances, and its purpose is to provide sufficient adhesion even when the alignment film formation region is close to the seal material and the alignment film is formed outside the seal material. A sealing material having strength can be realized without increasing the number of manufacturing steps.

Further, the liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate, and includes a sealing material provided around the first substrate and an alignment film formed on the first substrate. A structure having a surface having low affinity for the alignment film is formed at a position where the sealant is provided.
In the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, in the structure in which the alignment film is formed in the vicinity of the sealing material, the alignment film is formed on the outer side of the sealing material in the side portion that contributes to the narrowing of the frame.
Further, the present invention eliminates the alignment film from the sealing material forming portion without increasing the number of manufacturing steps in the structure in which the alignment film is formed close to the sealing material in the liquid crystal display device.
According to the present invention, it is possible to obtain a liquid crystal display device in which the periphery of the display unit is formed narrow by bringing the sealing material forming region and the alignment film close to each other.
According to the present invention, the alignment film can be easily excluded from the sealing material forming region, and a liquid crystal display device having a wide display region with respect to the peripheral portion can be obtained without increasing the number of steps. It becomes.
A liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal panel, the liquid crystal panel having two substrates opposed to each other with a liquid crystal layer sandwiched therebetween, around the two stacked substrates so as to seal the liquid crystal composition A sealing material is provided, an alignment film is formed on the liquid crystal layer side of the two substrates, and a structure that excludes the alignment film is formed at a position where the sealing material of at least one of the two substrates is formed. .
The liquid crystal panel has four sides, the three sides are formed by aligning the end surfaces of two substrates, and one side extends from one side to the other side to form an external connection portion. The alignment film is formed on the outer side of the sealing material on the three sides where the external connection portion is not formed, and the end of the alignment film is formed on the inner side of the sealing material on the one side where the external connection portion is formed.
A structure having a low affinity for the alignment film is formed in the vicinity of the position where the sealing material of at least one of the two substrates is formed.
FIG. 1 is a plan view showing a liquid

In FIG. 1, a gate signal line (also referred to as a scanning line) 21 extending in the x direction and juxtaposed in the y direction, and a drain signal line (video) extending in the y direction and juxtaposed in the x direction. The
A
The
The
Next, the appearance of the liquid crystal panel 1 will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the liquid crystal panel 1, and the
On the three
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the vicinity of the sealing
A
The
An inorganic insulating
The sealing
The
Next, FIG. 4 shows a sectional view of the vicinity of the
Although the
The
The positional accuracy by printing the
That is, when the width of the sealing
FIG. 5 shows the experimental results of the adhesive strength when the sealing material overlaps the alignment film. FIG. 5 shows the results of the peel strength test of the sealing material. A
Compared with the
Next, a structure for improving the adhesive strength of the sealing
The
As shown in FIG. 6, it is possible to increase the adhesive strength of the sealing material by providing the adhesive surface of the sealing
Next, the structure which reduced the coating-film property of the sealing
As shown in FIG. 7, the
Near the
In contrast, the transparent
The
FIG. 8 is a cross-sectional view showing the vicinity of the sealing
Since the transparent
If the
Next, the
FIG. 11 shows a state in which the
In the portion where the interval between the
The alignment film before drying is fluid due to a large proportion of the solvent, and has a property that the solute easily moves between the
FIG. 12 shows a cross section of the
Trusting the problem that the sealing material is peeled off from the substrate by selecting a substrate having a low affinity for the alignment film and exposing a part of the substrate by the
FIG. 13 is a plan view showing how the
