Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a control device for an internal combustion engine that can be operated at a lean air-fuel ratio.
A lean burn engine that can be operated at a lean air-fuel ratio that is leaner than the theoretical air-fuel ratio has been put into practical use. When operating at a lean air-fuel ratio, NOx cannot be purified by a three-way reaction because the exhaust gas contains a large amount of oxygen. Therefore, there is a system in which a NOx catalyst capable of storing NOx is provided in the exhaust passage of the lean burn engine, and NOx is temporarily stored in the NOx catalyst during lean air-fuel ratio operation.
The NOx catalyst has a characteristic that it cannot efficiently store NOx unless the temperature is within a certain zone (for example, 300 ° C. to 500 ° C.). For this reason, in order to prevent the release of NOx into the atmosphere, when the temperature of the NOx catalyst is not within the above temperature range (hereinafter referred to as the “storable temperature range”), the lean air-fuel ratio. It is desirable to perform control so as to perform a theoretical air-fuel ratio operation that can purify NOx by a three-way reaction without performing the operation.
However, the temperature in the NOx catalyst is usually not uniform. That is, in the NOx catalyst, there are cases where both a portion that falls within the storable temperature range and a portion that does not fall within the storable temperature range coexist.
In view of such circumstances, Japanese Patent Publication No. 2003-503622 discloses that the NOx catalyst is divided into a plurality of cells (sections) to detect the temperature of each cell, and the operation of the internal combustion engine is performed based on at least one cell temperature. An operation mode control method for determining a mode is disclosed.
In the operation mode control method described in the publication, the operation is switched to the lean air-fuel ratio operation on condition that at least one cell enters the storable temperature range during the theoretical air-fuel ratio operation. However, when the amount of exhaust gas is large, such as in a high load region or a high rotation region, NOx cannot be captured only by the cells that have entered the storable temperature region, and a situation in which NOx blows down downstream of the NOx catalyst tends to occur.
In the operation mode control method described in the publication, the operation is switched to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio operation on condition that at least one cell is out of the storable temperature range during the lean air-fuel ratio operation. However, when the amount of exhaust gas is small, such as in a low load region or a low rotation region, NOx can often be sufficiently captured even if some cells deviate from the storable temperature region. For this reason, in the control method described in the publication, the lean air-fuel ratio operation region becomes unnecessarily narrow, and the fuel efficiency improvement effect of the lean burn engine cannot be utilized to the maximum extent.
As described above, in the operation mode control method described in the above publication, good fuel efficiency and emission cannot always be obtained when various operation states are considered.
By the way, the conventional lean burn engine has other problems as follows. In order to reduce and purify NOx stored in the NOx catalyst, a rich spike is performed in which the exhaust air-fuel ratio is temporarily rich or stoichiometric. When rich spike is performed, reducing agent components such as HC, CO, and H 2 reach the NOx catalyst, and the stored NOx can be reduced to N 2 and separated. When all the NOx occluded in the NOx catalyst is reduced and released, the reducing agent component leaks downstream of the NOx catalyst.
Conventionally, the 0 2 sensor provided downstream of the NOx catalyst, by detecting the leakage of the reducing agent component to the NOx catalyst downstream, and determine when to end the rich spike. However, when the end timing of the rich spike is determined by such a method, HC, CO, and H 2 are inevitably blown downstream of the NOx catalyst at the end of the rich spike. For this reason, there is a problem that the emission tends to deteriorate due to the release of these reducing agent components.
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and provides an internal combustion engine control apparatus capable of obtaining excellent fuel efficiency and emission performance in an internal combustion engine that can be operated at a lean air-fuel ratio. The fifth invention is the fourth invention, wherein
An end determination value setting means for setting the end determination value based on the operating state of the internal combustion engine is further provided.
According to the first aspect of the present invention, the inside of the NOx catalyst is virtually divided into a plurality of compartments (cells), and the temperature for each compartment is detected or estimated, whereby a predetermined temperature range suitable for storing NOx. It is possible to determine the storable section contained in the storage. On the other hand, from the operating state of the internal combustion engine, the number of compartments required for the amount of exhaust gas discharged under the operating state can be calculated. According to the first aspect of the present invention, the operation mode of the internal combustion engine can be switched based on the result of comparing the number of storable sections and the required number of sections. If the number of storable compartments is equal to or greater than the required number of compartments, it can be determined that NOx in the exhaust gas can be sufficiently captured by the NOx catalyst even when lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed. That is, it is possible to appropriately determine whether or not the lean air-fuel ratio operation should be performed by comparing the number of storable sections with the required number of sections. Therefore, according to the first aspect, the conditions for switching the operation mode of the internal combustion engine can be appropriately determined, so that both excellent fuel efficiency and emission performance can be achieved.
According to the second aspect of the invention, when the number of storable compartments is greater than or equal to the required number of compartments, lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed. If the number of storable compartments is greater than the required number of compartments, NOx in the exhaust gas can be sufficiently captured by the NOx catalyst even when lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed. For this reason, if the lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed when the number of storable compartments is greater than the required number of compartments, the lean air-fuel ratio operation region can be expanded to the maximum without exhausting NOx into the atmosphere. . For this reason, fuel consumption can be improved to the maximum while ensuring low emissions.
According to the third invention, when the number of storable sections is less than the required number of sections, the theoretical air-fuel ratio operation is performed. When the number of storable compartments is less than the required number of compartments, it can be determined that if the lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed, NOx in the exhaust gas cannot be sufficiently captured by the NOx catalyst. Therefore, in such a case, low emission can be ensured by performing a theoretical air-fuel ratio operation that can purify NOx by a three-way reaction.
According to the fourth aspect of the invention, the inside of the NOx catalyst is virtually divided into a plurality of compartments, and the temperature for each compartment is detected or estimated to enter a predetermined temperature range suitable for storing NOx. The storable compartments can be determined. On the other hand, from the operating state of the internal combustion engine, the number of compartments required for the amount of exhaust gas discharged under the operating state can be calculated. According to the fourth aspect of the present invention, when the required number of compartments is N during the rich spike execution, the temperature rise of the Nth compartment counted from the upstream side among the storable compartments is a predetermined end determination value. When this happens, the rich spike can be terminated. If the temperature rise in the Nth section is equal to or higher than the end determination value, it can be determined that the reduction and purification of NOx stored in the Nth section is completed. And since the Nth section is the section located on the most downstream side among the sections that occluded NOx before the rich spike, if the reduction purification of NOx is completed in the Nth section, it The NOx reduction purification is also completed in the upstream section. Therefore, according to the fourth aspect, by terminating the rich spike at the above timing, the rich spike can be appropriately terminated at the timing when an appropriate amount of the reducing agent component is supplied. Even when an excess reducing agent component is present, the excess reducing agent component can be oxidized and purified by oxygen occluded in the compartment downstream from the Nth compartment. For this reason, according to the 4th invention, discharge | release of the reducing agent component to air | atmosphere at the time of rich spike execution can be suppressed, and the deterioration of an emission can be avoided effectively. Moreover, since it can prevent supplying a reducing agent component wastefully, favorable fuel consumption can be ensured.
According to the fifth aspect, the rich spike end determination value can be set based on the operating state of the internal combustion engine. Thereby, the end timing of the rich spike can be determined more appropriately.

[Features of Embodiment 1]
The
In order to prevent the release of NOx into the atmosphere, the lean air-fuel ratio operation is not performed when the temperature of the
Further, the temperature inside the
In view of the circumstances as described above, in the present invention, the inside of the
Each section is divided so that its capacity (NOx storage capacity) is equal. Needless to say, the number of virtual sections is not limited to eight, and may be seven or less or nine or more.
The temperature for each section can be estimated from the operating state of the
It can be determined that NOx can be efficiently occluded in a section where the temperature thus obtained falls within the occlusion-capable temperature range. In the following description, a section within the storable temperature range is referred to as a “storable section”. If the temperature of each section of the

Conversely, when the required number of compartments exceeds the number of storable compartments, if the lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed, NOx cannot be captured with the current number of storable compartments, and NOx is downstream of the
必要区画数は、空間速度SV(Space Velocity)によって判断することができる。
The required number of partitions can be determined by space velocity SV (Space Velocity). The space velocity SV is a value obtained by dividing the amount of exhaust gas (dm 3 / h) passing through the
The amount of exhaust gas passing through the
In the present embodiment, switching between the theoretical air-fuel ratio operation mode and the lean air-fuel ratio operation mode is performed based on the above-described idea. That is, when the number of storable sections of the
On the other hand, when the number of storable compartments is less than the required number of compartments, if the lean air-fuel ratio operation is performed, it can be determined that the current effective capacity of the
[Specific Processing in Embodiment 1]
FIG. 3 is a flowchart of a routine executed by the
Next, the current required number of sections is calculated based on the current operation area obtained in step 100 (step 102). The necessary number of compartments is the number of compartments of the
Subsequently, the estimated temperature for each section of the
Here, an example of the catalyst temperature estimation model used to calculate the estimated temperature for each section of the
Next, in the catalyst temperature estimation model, the amount of heat released from the catalyst due to the influence of traveling wind or the like is calculated as a factor for lowering the catalyst temperature. The amount of heat released from the catalyst can be calculated by a known method based on the outside air temperature, the vehicle speed, and the like.
In the catalyst temperature estimation model, the amount of heat transfer inside the catalyst is calculated. Inside the catalyst, the site on the inlet side (No. 1 in the NOx catalyst 38) is due to the heat conduction effect in which heat moves in the component (in the carrier) and the heat transfer effect in which heat is transferred by the flow of exhaust gas. Heat is sequentially transferred from the section) toward the outlet side (the section # 8 in the NOx catalyst 38). Such a heat transfer amount can be calculated by a known heat transfer model.
In the catalyst temperature estimation model, the estimated temperature for each section of the
The
Although an example of the catalyst temperature estimation model used to calculate the estimated temperature for each section of the
Of the estimated temperatures of the respective sections of the
If it is determined in
On the other hand, if it is determined in
According to the routine processing shown in FIG. 3 described above, the operation mode of the

Next, the second embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. 4. The description will focus on the differences from the first embodiment described above, and the description of similar matters will be omitted or simplified. To do. The present embodiment can be realized by causing the
There is a limit to the amount of NOx that can be stored in the
When rich spike is performed, a three-way reaction occurs between a reducing agent component such as HC, CO, H 2 and the NOx occluded in the
Whether or not NOx reduction purification and separation in a certain section has been completed can be determined based on the temperature increase amount in that section. Therefore, if it is confirmed that the temperature of the most downstream compartment among the compartments storing NOx has increased by a predetermined temperature increase compared to before the start of the rich spike, the
During lean air-fuel ratio operation, NOx that has flowed into the
Therefore, in this embodiment, when the required number of compartments is N, the temperature of the Nth compartment counted from the upstream side among the storable compartments is only a predetermined determination temperature increase compared to before the start of the rich spike. When it was confirmed that the rise, the rich spike was terminated. By determining the end time of the rich spike by such a method, there are the following advantages.
At the time of rich spike, when the reduction and purification of NOx stored in the Nth compartment (the 6th compartment in the example shown in FIG. 2) is completed, the reducing agent components such as HC, CO, and H 2 are changed to the Nth compartment. It is no longer consumed by the parcel. For this reason, immediately after that, a situation occurs in which the excessive reducing agent component flows into the downstream side of the Nth section. Even when such a situation occurs, if a section is left downstream from the Nth section, the excess reducing agent component is oxidized by oxygen stored in the section. Can be purified. That is, in the example shown in FIG. 2, even when the excessive reducing agent component flows into the 7th and 8th compartments after the reduction and purification of NOx stored in the 6th compartment is completed, Excess reducing agent components can be oxidized and purified by oxygen occluded in the 7th and 8th compartments.
For this reason, according to the present embodiment, it is possible to effectively suppress the release of reducing agent components such as HC, CO, H 2 and the like into the atmosphere during the execution of rich spike. It is possible to prevent the emission from being deteriorated due to the release of.
In other words, unlike the conventional, in the method so as to end the rich spike from the detection of the leakage of the reducing agent component by 0 2 sensor provided downstream of the NOx catalyst, more or less reducing agent each time the rich spike execution Although the component is released into the atmosphere, according to the second embodiment, the release of such a reducing agent component can be effectively suppressed.
[Specific Processing in Second Embodiment]
FIG. 4 is a flowchart of a routine executed by the
According to the routine shown in FIG. 4,
Then, according to the routine shown in FIG. 4, it is determined whether or not there is a rich spike request during execution of the lean air-fuel ratio operation (step 112). The necessity of the rich spike can be determined by a known method. For example, based on the operating state of the
If it is determined in
In
In the present invention, the temperature increase allowance for rich spike end determination may be constant regardless of the load of the
Subsequently, it is determined whether or not the temperature increase allowance of the corresponding section when compared with before the start of the rich spike has reached the end determination temperature increase allowance calculated in step 114 (step 116). Here, the “corresponding section” is the storable section determined according to the estimated temperature of each section acquired in
If it is determined in
On the other hand, when it is determined in
According to the processing of the routine shown in FIG. 4 described above, the rich spike is terminated when the temperature increase allowance of the corresponding section reaches the end determination temperature increase allowance, so that excess reducing agent is supplied to the
When the exhaust gas flow rate is large and the required number of compartments is equal to the total number of compartments of the
