Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device.
A liquid crystal device used as a light modulation unit of a projection display device such as a liquid crystal projector is configured by sealing a liquid crystal between a pair of substrates. Electrodes are formed on the inner surfaces of the pair of substrates, and an alignment film for controlling the alignment of liquid crystal molecules is formed on the inner surfaces of these electrodes. With such a configuration, the liquid crystal device modulates the light source light based on the change in the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules when the non-selection voltage is applied and when the selection voltage is applied, and emits image light to the viewer side.
By the way, as the above-mentioned alignment film, a film obtained by subjecting the surface of a polymer film made of polyimide or the like to which a side chain alkyl group is added to a rubbing treatment is generally used. The rubbing treatment is to orient the polymer in a predetermined direction by rubbing the surface of the polymer film in a predetermined direction with a roller made of a soft cloth. Due to the intermolecular interaction between the alignment polymer and the liquid crystal molecules, the liquid crystal molecules are arranged along the alignment polymer, so that the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a predetermined direction when a non-selective voltage is applied and pretilt to the liquid crystal molecules. Can be given.
However, when a liquid crystal device including such an organic alignment film is employed as a light modulation unit of a projector, the alignment film may be gradually decomposed by strong light or heat emitted from a light source. Then, after a long period of use, there is a risk that the liquid crystal molecule alignment control function will be degraded, such as the liquid crystal molecules being unable to align at the desired pretilt angle, and the display quality of the liquid crystal projector will be degraded.
Therefore, the use of an alignment film made of an inorganic material having excellent light resistance and heat resistance has been proposed. As a method for producing such an inorganic alignment film, for example, a silicon oxide (SiO 2 ) film formed by oblique deposition is used. Film formation is known.
However, the inorganic alignment film formed by the oblique deposition method or the like has a large number of polarized hydroxyl groups on the surface thereof, and particularly easily adsorbs a compound having a polar group such as water. As a result, there has been a problem that, particularly by adsorbing water, the water causes deterioration of the liquid crystal, resulting in low moisture resistance.
Further, since the inorganic alignment film is generally amorphous and its surface is porous, the adhesion between the inorganic alignment film and the sealing material is low. As a result, the airtightness in these seal portions is lowered, and the moisture resistance as the seal portion is lowered. As a result, the moisture-proof property is lowered, and there is a problem in that display characteristics abnormality and alignment film uniformity cannot be ensured.
However, the method disclosed in
(1) Since alcohol hardly reacts with the inorganic alignment film, unreacted alcohol tends to remain on the surface of the inorganic alignment film, and display unevenness is caused due to this.
(2) surface treatment with alcohol are the only applicable to the alignment film made of SiO 2, in the case of using a SiO 2 material other than the inorganic alignment films, it was not possible to apply a surface treatment with an alcohol .
Furthermore, in recent years, various electronic devices (such as televisions and mobile phones) have been developed, and the viewing angle required for the liquid crystal device of each electronic device varies depending on the environment in which the electronic device is used. Therefore, a simple and low-cost method for simultaneously orienting the liquid crystal according to the electronic device is required.
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and an object of the present invention is to manufacture a liquid crystal device that can control (change) the alignment state of liquid crystal easily and at low cost and has excellent moisture resistance. To provide a method.
In order to solve the above-described problems, the present invention provides a method of manufacturing a liquid crystal device in which liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates arranged opposite to each other, and an inorganic alignment film is formed on the liquid crystal side of at least one of the substrates. Using an inorganic alignment film forming step, and a silane coupling agent that imparts an alignment regulating force on the surface of the inorganic alignment film to align the liquid crystal substantially vertically or substantially horizontally with respect to the surface of the inorganic alignment film, And a silane coupling treatment step for treating the surface of the inorganic alignment film.
According to this method, the alignment state of the liquid crystal is horizontally adjusted by treating the surface of the inorganic alignment film by selecting one of the silane coupling agents that impart alignment regulating force that aligns the liquid crystal substantially vertically or substantially horizontally. It can be easily changed to either orientation or vertical orientation. Thereby, cost reduction of a liquid crystal device can be achieved.
Further, according to this method, the type of the inorganic alignment film is not limited to SiO 2 , and therefore, it can be applied to the inorganic alignment film by various methods using various materials.
Furthermore, in the inorganic alignment film forming step, porous holes are formed on the surface of the inorganic alignment film. In the present invention, by providing a silane coupling treatment step after the inorganic alignment film forming step, Porous pores are filled with a silane coupling agent. Thereby, the inorganic alignment film becomes denser and, for example, the water intrusion path from the interface between the sealing material and the inorganic alignment film is blocked. Therefore, the adhesion between the inorganic alignment film and the sealing material is increased, and the moisture resistance and reliability of the liquid crystal device can be improved.
In the method for producing a liquid crystal device of the present invention, in the silane coupling treatment step, the surface of the inorganic alignment film is imparted with an alignment regulating force for aligning the liquid crystal substantially perpendicular to the surface of the inorganic alignment film. It is also preferable to use a silane coupling agent containing an alkyl group as the silane coupling agent.
According to this configuration, since the silane coupling agent has an alkyl group, the surface of the inorganic alignment film becomes water repellent. Thereby, the surface energy of the surface of the inorganic alignment film is reduced, and the liquid crystal between the pair of substrates can be easily aligned substantially perpendicular to the surface of the inorganic alignment film.
In the method for producing a liquid crystal device of the present invention, in the silane coupling treatment step, a material obtained by fluorinating a part or all of the alkyl group contained in the silane coupling agent is used as the silane coupling agent. Is also preferable.
According to this configuration, the water repellency of the silane coupling agent can be further improved by fluorinating (substituting) some or all of the alkyl groups.
In the method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device of the present invention, in the silane coupling treatment step, the surface of the inorganic alignment film is provided with an alignment regulating force that aligns the liquid crystal substantially horizontally with respect to the surface of the inorganic alignment film. As a coupling agent, epoxycyclohexylethyltrimethoxysilane, an aromatic silane coupling agent, an aliphatic silane coupling agent having at least one oxygen atom in an aliphatic group, an alicyclic silane coupling agent, an aromatic in a chain It is also preferable to use a silane coupling agent having a ring and several oxygen atoms, a silane coupling agent having a branch in the fatty chain, or a silane coupling agent having a telocyclic aromatic group.
According to this configuration, by using the above-mentioned material for the silane coupling agent, the regulating force for aligning the liquid crystal changes, and the liquid crystal between the pair of substrates is simply aligned substantially horizontally with respect to the surface of the inorganic alignment film. Can be made.

Next, as shown in FIG. 5B, the surface of the
Here, as the
First, the case where the alignment regulating force for vertical alignment is applied will be described.
In this case, as the
And as shown to Fig.7 (a), arrange | positions a pair of board |
Next, a case where an alignment regulating force for horizontal alignment is applied will be described.
In this case, as the
Then, as shown in FIG. 7A, a pair of
According to the present embodiment, by selecting any one of the
In addition, according to the present embodiment, the silane coupling treatment is not limited to SiO 2 as the material of the
Further, in the inorganic alignment film forming step, porous holes are formed on the surfaces of the
