Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an improvement of a field emission display, and more particularly to a field emission display in which an organic electroluminescent light emitting layer is arranged on a light emitting layer of a field emission display (FED).
陰極線管CRT(cathode-ray tube)は古くからTVやコンピュターの端末に使われてきた。 Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) have been used for TV and computer terminals for a long time. The main part of the structure of the CRT is (1) the cathode of a thermionic source that generates thermionic electrons, (2) the accelerated heat from the cathode toward the phosphor film on the glass substrate coated with the phosphor. Deflection system that deflects electrons vertically and horizontally, (3), and the anode of a fluorescent screen with an inorganic phosphor coated on the bottom of a transparent glass substrate It consists of three parts. The phosphor film is accelerated and collided with thermionic emission generated between high-voltage electrodes (cathode and anode) to emit phosphor, which is called a cathode ray tube CRT or a Braun tube. .
一方、現在のFED(field emission display)或いはSED(surface emission display)と称する薄型フラットパネルディスプレイは従来のCRTをさらに発展させたものであり、基本原理は同じである。 On the other hand, a thin flat panel display called a current FED (field emission display) or SED (surface emission display) is a further development of a conventional CRT, and the basic principle is the same. However, the main part different from the structure of CRT is (1). The method for emitting electrons from the cathode is a method for emitting electrons by applying a very strong electric field to the surface of the cold cathode. That is, generation of electrons is due to cold cathode emission or field emission. (2) It is not necessary to install a deflection system that deflects electrons vertically and horizontally. (3) The phosphor film uses an inorganic phosphor material as in CRT.
In addition to the thin flat panel displays typified by LCDs, organic electroluminescence is currently most expected. A typical organic electroluminescence device structure is an organic material that performs various functions between an anode made of a transparent electrode obtained by coating ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) on a transparent glass substrate and a cathode made of a metal having a low work function. It is a structure with a multilayer film sandwiched between them. Usually, the organic layer and the cathode are formed into a thin film by vacuum deposition. By applying a DC voltage to organic electroluminescence, holes are injected from the anode through the hole transport layer, and electrons are injected from the cathode through the electron transport layer into the light emitting layer. Fluorescent molecules in the light emitting layer are excited by the injected positive and negative carriers, and light emission is obtained in the relaxation process of the excited molecules. That is, voltage application, charge injection, charge transport, and light emission are all completed in a solid phase. The light emission principle of organic electroluminescence is that the positive and negative carriers of electrons injected into the excited state of organic materials and holes injected into the ground state are applied in organic materials by applying voltage. It moves when driven by an electric field, and emits light when it meets and recombines.
In contrast, the FED or SED is not performed in the solid phase until voltage application, charge injection, charge transport, and light emission are completed in a high vacuum. Therefore, the light emission principle of FED or SED is the so-called cathode luminescence that emits light by accelerating and colliding electrons emitted in vacuum toward the inorganic phosphor material, that is, applying an electron beam. is there.
The inventor has previously invented an FED device equipped with the electron multiplier described in
The inventor has succeeded in obtaining different emission colors as a result of research on the emission characteristics of the organic electroluminescence. However, since the luminous efficiency of the organic electroluminescent element is about 7 cd / A, the luminous efficiency that can be used for flat displays and the like that require high vision has not been obtained.
On the other hand, as a result of further research on organic electroluminescent elements, the present inventor has discovered a light-emitting principle of organic electroluminescence that has not been known so far. That is, if the inorganic fluorescent film of the FED panel that emits light by being irradiated with an electron beam is replaced with an organic electroluminescent light emitting layer and is irradiated with an electron beam, what is the principle of cathode luminescence of the FED? It was found that different luminescence occurs. That is, this light emission is similar to the principle of light emission generated when carriers peculiar to the organic electroluminescence element recombine, and is capable of obtaining light emission characteristics that are extremely efficient as compared with the organic electroluminescence element.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a completely new field emission display having emission luminance far exceeding that of the organic electroluminescence element by effectively utilizing the emission characteristics of the organic electroluminescence element and the emission characteristics of the FED. It is intended.

As described above, according to the present invention, an organic electroluminescence light emitting layer is arranged on an inorganic phosphor film of a field emission display (FED), and the organic electroluminescence light emission characteristics are effectively used, thereby organic electroluminescence. There is a beneficial effect that it is possible to provide a completely new field emission display far exceeding the light emission luminance of the device.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. The basic configuration of the present invention is such that an organic electroluminescent
The FED element includes a
In the FED element of FIG. 1, an
There is a metal channel type electron multiplier as the optimum electron multiplier 5 (see FIG. 14). The secondary electron generating material 9 applied to the metal channel type electron multiplying portion is preferably Cu-Be (copper-beryllium) or Ag-Mg (silver-magnesium). In addition, a box type electron multiplier (see FIG. 10), a line focus type electron multiplier (see FIG. 11), a mesh type electron multiplier (see FIG. 12), and an MPC type electron multiplier. It is possible to select and use one or a combination of any one of (see FIG. 13). The secondary electron generating material 9 can be used as a material for a metal back cathode of the organic electroluminescent
The present invention can also be implemented as an FED element that does not use the electron multiplier 5 (see FIG. 8). At this time, the secondary electron generating material is directly applied to the lower surface of the organic electroluminescent
Furthermore, in the FED element that does not use the
この印加電圧VELは可変出来るので、VELをVth(Vthは有機エレクトロルミネセンスの発光しき値電圧)より少なく調整することができる。
As shown in the configuration of FIG. 9, when a metal back 10 is added to the organic electroluminescent
The form etc. of the organic electroluminescent
Note that the configuration of the organic electroluminescent light-emitting
Next, experimental results of measuring the light emission characteristics of the display of the present invention will be described (see FIGS. 3 to 5). The substrate of the anode ITO electrode 2 (30 × 50 mm) was cleaned with a cleaning solution such as acetone. Next, the
In order to measure the light emission characteristics of the organic electroluminescent
Before measuring the light emission characteristics of the organic electroluminescent
FIG. 5 shows the relationship between the anodic current I (mA), the anodic voltage V (volt), and the luminescent luminance L (cd / m2), and the anodic current density measured within the range in which light emission was confirmed from the anode substrate of the present invention (FEOELD). It is a relationship characteristic figure of J (mA / cm2), anod voltage V (volt), and luminous efficiency (Luminescence Efficiency). The substrate of the
From the comparison chart of both characteristics in Table 1, it can be seen that the luminous efficiency of the present invention (FEOELD) is about 137 cd / A, which is significantly higher than the luminous efficiency of a single organic electroluminescent light emitting layer (OELD) of 7 cd / A. . Next, in order to compare the two under the same current density, a comparative diagram showing luminance and luminous efficiency between the present invention and a single organic electroluminescent light emitting layer is shown (see FIG. 7). From this figure, it can be seen that the element of the present invention has significantly higher luminance and luminous efficiency than a panel using a single organic electroluminescent light emitting layer. For example, at the same current density of 0.14 mA /
Next, an experiment showing the light emission principle of the organic electroluminescence
Further, as can be seen from the energy band diagram shown in FIG. 15, performing the carrier recombination region in the
