Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a facsimile machine, a printer, a plotter, and a printing machine. More specifically, the fixing property to a transfer material when a high viscosity and high density liquid developer is used as a developing unit. The present invention relates to an improved image forming apparatus and an image forming method.
In image forming apparatuses such as copying machines, facsimile machines, printers, plotters, and printing machines, a liquid developer in which toner is dispersed in an insulating liquid (hereinafter referred to as a carrier liquid) is applied to an image carrier and a visualized image ( Toner image) is formed, and the formed visualized image (toner image) is primarily transferred onto the intermediate transfer member, and then the visualized image on the intermediate transfer member is secondarily transferred to a transfer material such as transfer paper and fixed. In general, an image forming apparatus using a liquid developer that forms an image is widely used.
In such an image forming apparatus using a liquid developer, when the carrier liquid adheres to the transfer paper, the cost becomes high, and in the case of a non-volatile carrier liquid, the carrier liquid remains in the transfer paper almost permanently. It deteriorates the property, sticks when handled, and the fixing property is poor, and the toner rubs on the transfer paper. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent the carrier liquid from adhering to the transfer paper as much as possible and to reduce the amount taken out of the image forming apparatus as much as possible. Also, it is necessary to prevent the developer image from being crushed when transferring the toner image on the intermediate transfer member to a transfer paper with good smoothness such as coated paper or a transfer paper with poor carrier liquid permeability. There is.
In order to solve such problems, for example, a method of removing the carrier liquid from the intermediate transfer member has been proposed as described in Patent Document 1 and
(1) Patent Document 1: Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2002-296918 Prior to secondary transfer, a liquid removing roller is provided to remove excess carrier liquid from a toner image superimposed and transferred on an intermediate transfer belt, and surplus By applying a bias to the liquid removal roller simultaneously with the removal of the carrier liquid, only the excess carrier liquid is removed while preventing the toner from adhering to the liquid removal roller.
(2) Patent Document 2: Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2001-356613 When the thickness of a print medium is determined and the value is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, a plurality of removing rollers arranged so as to be capable of contacting the intermediate transfer member. The number of carrier liquids to be removed from the toner image on the intermediate transfer member is increased by changing the number to be used.
However, when the carrier liquid is removed as described in Patent Document 1 and
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems. When secondary transfer is performed from an intermediate transfer member to a transfer material using electrostatic transfer, the carrier liquid is excessively reduced and secondary transferability is reduced. Since it may deteriorate, the carrier liquid removal of the developer image on the intermediate transfer member is adjusted to improve the secondary transfer property.If the fixing property is insufficient, the fixing property is improved and transfer omission is prevented. It is an object of the present invention to provide an image forming apparatus and an image forming method capable of obtaining a high-quality image with good fixability. Further, as described above, the carrier liquid should not be attached to the transfer paper as much as possible, and the carrier liquid should not be taken out of the image forming apparatus as much as possible. Alternatively, an object of the present invention is to provide an image forming apparatus capable of obtaining a high-quality image by collecting charge after compressing the toner by applying an electric charge, and collecting the separated carrier liquid without being rubbed on the transfer paper.
Hereinafter, an example of an embodiment when the present invention is applied to an electrophotographic image forming apparatus using a liquid developer will be described.

In this embodiment, the surface of the photosensitive drum 1 is formed of amorphous silicon (a-Si), but OPC (Organic Photoconductor) or the like is also used as the material of the photosensitive drum 1. be able to.
As an exposure device, an LED writing device using a light emitting diode array (LED array) and an imaging element (micro lens array, rod lens array, etc.), a laser light source such as a laser diode (LD), an optical deflector, and scanning. A laser scanning device using an imaging optical system can be used.
The developing device 4 is a liquid developing device that uses a high-viscosity, high-concentration liquid developer in which toner is dispersed in an insulating liquid (carrier liquid).
Next, an image forming operation of the
The surface of the photosensitive drum 1 uniformly charged by the
The visualized image (toner image) developed into the electrostatic latent image reaches a position facing the
The toner image primarily transferred in this way is secondarily transferred onto a transfer sheet S as a transfer material at a portion between the

Next, the structure of the developing device 4 will be described. The developing device 4 includes a

When a volatile liquid developer is used, it is advantageous for fixing as compared with the non-volatile case. However, if the
The pair of agitating

Next, the photosensitive member sweep unit 5 that removes excess toner on the surface of the photosensitive drum 1 will be described. As shown in FIG. 1, the

As one of the functions of the photosensitive member sweep unit 5, there is a function of removing the fog toner causing the fog from the photosensitive drum 1. Specifically, the
Next, the transfer part will be described. The transfer unit mainly includes a
The structure of the
When the intermediate transfer member is in the form of a drum, there are advantages such as good rotation accuracy, good position reproducibility, and easy application of high pressure. On the other hand, when the intermediate transfer member is in the form of a belt, it is advantageous when a plurality of photosensitive members are used, such as for color, or when a wide nip width is desired. Examples of the material for the elastic conductive layer include hydrin, urethane, NBR, chloroprene rubber, silicone rubber, EPDM, and the like. The material of each elastic body layer is not limited to the above, but may be any material that has conductivity and does not swell or dissolve with the carrier liquid / developer. In addition, if the surface is conductive and does not swell or dissolve with the carrier liquid / developer, and the inner layer does not come into contact with the carrier liquid / developer, the inner layer The material of each elastic body layer is not limited to the above-described conductivity / swelling / dissolution, and may be elastic. In this case, however, the bias voltage applied to the intermediate transfer member needs to be applied from the surface, not from the axis of the intermediate transfer member. The rubber hardness of the elastic layer is preferably 50 degrees or less in terms of JIS-A hardness. This is for providing a transfer nip, and when a belt-like intermediate transfer member is used, it may be of a hardness that has a function of driving and bending as a sheet. When a belt-shaped photoconductor is used, the intermediate transfer member does not need to be an elastic body.
The surface roughness of the
If the volume resistivity of the
When the intermediate transfer material has problems such as surface roughness and surface slippage, another layer (surface layer) may be provided on the surface. When an elastic body is used, it becomes difficult to improve the surface roughness and the tack becomes strong. Therefore, in order to solve such a problem, for example, a coating layer having a thickness of several [μm] to several [mm] using a fluorine-based resin, a film layer, and an elastic layer made of another material may be provided. In this case, the resistivity of the intermediate transfer member is composed of three layers of the base body + elastic layer + surface layer. Taking the

Hereinafter, specific examples of the toner particle layer compression unit of the image forming apparatus according to the present invention will be described.
<Packing roller configuration>
As shown in FIG. 1, the
As an example of the packing
Further, a thin (thickness of about 5 to 10 [μm]) polyamide resin coating film and a 15 [μm] fluororesin (including 4 wt% carbon) surface layer are provided on the elastic layer, and toner It is good to make it difficult to adhere and to have high durability. Further, the surface resistance may be adjusted as described above by providing a conductive resin coating, a coating, or an alumite layer on the surface of the core metal.
Further, the average roughness (ten-point average roughness Rz (JIS)) at ten locations on the surface of the packing
The carrier liquid adheres to the
<Relationship between secondary transferability, developer layer solid content and smear>
Here, the relationship among the secondary transfer property, the developer layer solid content, and the smear in the image forming apparatus of the present invention will be described.
When the toner solid content rate in the developer layer on the
Further, as shown in FIG. 4A, the toner particle compression member (packing roller) 62a is brought into contact with the developer layer on the
The presence or absence of the
From the above, in the relationship between the solid content rate of the developer layer on the
Therefore, in order to improve the fixability, not only the solid content ratio of the entire developer layer is increased, but also the solid content ratio of the toner particle layer in the developer layer is increased (that is, the toner particle layer is compressed, It is considered necessary to remove the carrier liquid from between the toner particles.
However, the fixability may vary depending on the environment. For example, when the temperature is low, the heat conduction to the toner layer becomes inefficient and the fixing property is deteriorated even at the same fixing roller temperature as usual. Depending on the application, higher fixability may be required, or relatively low fixability may be acceptable. Therefore, in such a case, by adjusting the pressure of the packing roller, the removal amount of the carrier liquid is adjusted, and the fixing property is adjusted.
Regarding the secondary transferability, since the carrier liquid in the vicinity of the toner particles that swell the toner particles is involved in the charging of the toner, the carrier liquid between the toner particles is similar to the fixability. Although it is considered to be involved, if the toner particle layer is compressed to remove the carrier liquid between the toner particles too much, the secondary transfer property becomes poor. Therefore, in such a case, the removal amount of the carrier liquid is adjusted by adjusting the pressure of the packing roller, and the secondary transfer property is adjusted.
<Variable mechanism of packing roller pressure>
Next, a specific example of a variable mechanism (toner particle compression member pressurizing mechanism) for adjusting the pressure of the packing

In FIG. 5A, the toner particle compression
The packing
In FIG. 5A, when the adjusting

FIG. 7A is a cross-sectional view of the packing roller 130 according to this modification. FIG. 7B is an explanatory diagram of a state in which the packing
(Example 2)
In the first embodiment, the configuration has been described in which the packing
In FIG. 8A, the

<Packing roller contact / separation mechanism>
Incidentally, in order to efficiently compress the toner particles with the packing
As an example of the contact / separation mechanism, intermediate transfer is performed against the tensile force of the tension spring 121 (or the spring 129) for each of the packing roller

An electric field in a direction in which the toner moves to the

<Smear measurement method and pressure control method>
In the image forming apparatus according to the present invention, the fixability of the fixed image discharged from the fixing device may be evaluated and fed back to the pressure adjusting mechanism of the packing
FIG. 9 shows an example of a smear measuring apparatus, which includes a white

Dsmr=(Dcrk−Dcls)/Dinit
Here, as shown in the following equation, a value Dsmr obtained by dividing a value obtained by subtracting the cloth density (Dcls) from the smear density (Dcrk) by the original image density (Dinit) is an evaluation value (= smear) in the smear method. To do. The smaller the value of Dsmr, the better the fixability, and the current target value is 0.1 or less.
Dsmr = (Dcrk−Dcls) / Dinit
The smear measurement is performed before or after the printing operation, and the fixing property is adjusted based on the result. For example, at the time of printing, smear measurement is performed every fixed number of sheets such as every 1000 sheets, every 10,000 sheets, etc., and the fixability of the fixed image is evaluated by the
