Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an ink filling method and an ink filling mechanism in which ink is supplied to a print head from an ink container containing ink via an ink supply tube and the print head is filled with ink.
2. Description of the Related Art Inkjet image forming apparatuses that form images by ejecting ink onto recording media such as recording paper are widely used. This image forming apparatus is equipped with a print head (recording head) having a plurality of nozzles for discharging ink and a plurality of ink discharge ports (nozzle outlets), and the plurality of ink discharge ports are substantially flat with respect to the print head. It is formed on the ink ejection surface (face surface). There are two types of print heads: a type that ejects ink while moving in the main scanning direction together with the carriage (serial type), and a type that ejects ink while it is fixed and stopped (full line type).
Regardless of the type of print head described above, when an ink jet image forming apparatus is newly installed, an operation of filling the print head with ink (initial ink filling) is required. In this initial ink filling operation, ink is supplied from the ink tank to the print head using a pump or the like to be filled.
。 By the way, there is an ink jet type image forming apparatus of a type in which a large-capacity ink tank and a print head which are set apart from a print head are connected by an ink supply tube for the purpose of high-speed mass printing. In this type of ink jet image forming apparatus, air in the ink supply tube is also sent to the print head when the ink is initially filled, so that the ink in the print head contains bubbles. If printing is started with the bubbles remaining in the print head, image formation failure or head failure may occur. In order to discharge such bubbles from the print head, a recovery operation for circulating the ink between the print head and the ink tank is performed (for example, see Patent Document 1).
When the ink is initially filled, air is sent together with the ink from the ink supply tube to the print head as described above. Therefore, a large amount of air bubbles are easily generated in the print head, and the ink is discharged from the ink discharge port. At the same time, a large amount of bubbles are pushed out and discharged. When a large amount of ink and bubbles discharged in this way are introduced (received) into the cap at a time, they are in the form of bubbles and cannot be recovered from the ink recovery flow path of the cap. Ink and air bubbles leak out (overflow). The leaked ink and air bubbles may reach not only inside the apparatus but also outside the apparatus and contaminate various parts.
In view of the circumstances described above, an object of the present invention is to provide an ink filling method and an ink filling mechanism that prevent ink from leaking from a cap that receives ink discharged from a print head.

In this specification, “recording” (also referred to as image formation or printing) is not only for forming significant information such as characters and graphics, but also for human beings, regardless of significance or insignificance. Regardless of whether or not it is manifested in this way, a case where an image, a pattern, a pattern, or the like is widely formed on a recording medium or the medium is processed is also expressed.
The “recording medium” (also referred to as a sheet) is not only paper used in general recording apparatuses but also widely accepts ink such as cloth, plastic film, metal plate, glass, ceramics, wood, leather, etc. It shall also represent what is possible.
Further, the term “ink” should be interpreted broadly in the same way as the definition of “recording” described above. When applied to a recording medium, it forms an image, a pattern, a pattern, etc., or processes the recording medium. It represents a liquid that can be subjected to the above processing (for example, coagulation or insolubilization of the colorant in the ink applied to the recording medium).
According to the present invention, since ink is supplied to the print head in a plurality of times when ink is filled, the amount of bubbles and ink pushed out from the print head at a time is small. That is, only a small amount of ink and bubbles are discharged into the cap at a time. For this reason, these small amounts of ink and bubbles are quickly recovered from the ink recovery flow path of the cap, so that the ink and bubbles do not leak out (overflow) from the cap.
The present invention has been realized in an ink jet printer.
A printer to which the present invention is applied will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2.
FIG. 1 is a front view showing a schematic configuration of a printer as an example of an ink jet type image forming apparatus to which the present invention is applied. FIG. 2 is a perspective view showing a schematic configuration of the printer of FIG.
The
The
The
In addition, the
Further, a

FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing an ink supply tube and an ink return tube in which the image forming unit and the ink supply unit are connected.

FIG. 4 is a schematic diagram showing the ink flow paths of the image forming unit and the ink supply unit. Here, the
The
The upper part in the
The

FIG. 6A shows the positional relationship between the two in the standby state, and FIG. 6B shows the positional relationship between the two in the initial ink filling state. (C) shows the positional relationship between the two immediately before cleaning the face surface, and (d) shows the positional relationship between the two while the face surface is being cleaned.
The
First, the liquid
When it is determined that the initial ink filling / dividing operation has not been performed n times, the pressurizing
Subsequent to S505, the ink pushed out by the face surface 12as and received by the
If it is determined in S507 that ink remains in the
By the way, in the ink supply tubes and the ink regression tubes of the print heads 12a to 12f, there is a variation in the resistance of the ink flow path, and there is a variation in the pumping capacity of the
As described above, the
When it is determined in S503 that the initial ink filling / dividing operation has been performed a predetermined number of times (n times), the
After the
After the above cleaning operation is completed, the discharged ink is attached to the outlet of the nozzle 12an and the face surface 12as. Therefore, in order to remove the ink adhering to the outlet of the nozzle 12an and the face surface 12as, the
In the above flow, the example in which the pressurizing
The case where the present invention is applied to an ink jet recording head employing a so-called bubble jet recording method that uses thermal energy generated from a heating element as energy for ejecting ink has been described as an example. It is obvious that the present invention can also be applied to other types of ink jet recording heads (for example, a method using a piezoelectric element). Further, the mechanical configuration of the ink jet recording apparatus that performs recording on a recording medium using the ink jet recording head according to the present invention is not limited to the serial recording method in which recording is performed while moving the carriage on which the recording head is mounted. A full line recording method may be used in which recording is performed while the recording medium is moved relative to a recording head having a length corresponding to the width of the medium.
