Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a microlens, a spatial light modulation device, and an image display device, and more particularly to a technique of a microlens used in a liquid crystal type spatial light modulation device.
In a spatial light modulation device, particularly a liquid crystal type spatial light modulation device, various wiring such as a data line, a scanning line, a capacitance line, a thin film transistor (hereinafter referred to as TFT (Thin Film Transistor) as appropriate), Various electronic elements such as thin film diodes are formed. For this reason, in each pixel, the region where light that actually contributes to display is transmitted or reflected is limited by the presence of various wirings, electronic elements, and the like. Here, the aperture ratio of each pixel is the ratio of the area where light that actually contributes to display is transmitted or reflected for each pixel (that is, the aperture area of each pixel) to the entire area, for example, about 70%. It is. What is effectively modulated by the spatial light modulator is light of a light amount corresponding to the aperture ratio of each pixel.
Therefore, conventionally, a technique for forming a microlens array having a plurality of microlenses corresponding to each pixel on a counter substrate has been introduced. The microlens has a function of condensing, in each pixel, light that travels toward a non-opening region where the above-described wirings and the like around the opening region exist in each pixel. When the light collected by the microlens is transmitted through the liquid crystal layer of the spatial light modulator, the light is guided into an opening region corresponding to the pixel. Here, in order to make the light from the microlens enter the aperture region efficiently, it has been proposed to match the shape of the focused spot by the microlens with the shape of the aperture region. By matching the shape of the focused spot by the microlens with the shape of the aperture region, light can be used with high efficiency and a high-luminance image can be obtained. For example,
The liquid crystal spatial light modulator modulates light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer by changing the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules according to the applied voltage. If the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules can be accurately changed according to the image signal, a high quality image can be obtained. However, the liquid crystal layer may have a portion in which the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is disturbed due to the influence of the voltage applied to the adjacent pixel, the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules, the shape of the black matrix, and the like. In a portion where the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is disturbed, it is difficult to accurately modulate light according to the image signal, which causes a decrease in contrast. As described above, the conventional technology has a problem that it is difficult to obtain a high-contrast image even if light can be supplied to the aperture region with high efficiency. The present invention has been made in view of the above-described problems. A microlens capable of obtaining a high-efficiency and high-contrast image when used in combination with a spatial light modulator, and spatial light using the microlens. It is an object to provide a modulation device and an image display device.
In order to solve the above-described problems and achieve the object, according to the present invention, a microlens used in a spatial light modulation device includes a first surface having a curvature and a second surface that is substantially flat. And the first surface has a vertex at a position other than the position on the normal line passing through the approximate center of the second surface.
The liquid crystal layer has a portion where the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules deteriorates due to the influence of the voltage applied to the adjacent pixel, the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules, the shape of the black matrix, etc. in each opening region corresponding to the pixel. May occur. At this time, normally, a portion showing a good alignment state according to the image signal is generated at a position shifted in any direction from the center position of the opening region. The microlens of the present invention has a vertex provided at a position other than the position on the normal passing through the approximate center of the second surface. Here, the apex of the microlens is a contact point between the first surface and a plane parallel to the reference surface and in contact with the first surface. The microlens is provided with an apex at a position other than the position on the normal line passing through the approximate center of the second surface. The shape can be decentered so as to be refracted into the part. By using a microlens to advance light having a small light beam angle to a portion where the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules is good, a high-contrast image can be formed by accurate modulation according to an image signal. The ray angle refers to the angle formed with the optical axis. Thereby, by using in combination with the spatial light modulation device, a microlens capable of obtaining a high contrast image can be obtained. The portion where the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules deteriorates in the liquid crystal layer occurs in the same pattern for each opening region. For this reason, it is possible to easily form a microlens array by using microlenses having substantially the same shape.
According to a preferred aspect of the present invention, there is provided a microlens used in a spatial light modulation device including a liquid crystal layer, wherein the first surface has a predetermined characteristic corresponding to the characteristics of the liquid crystal layer that changes the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules. It is desirable to have a shape that allows light to travel in the direction. The liquid crystal layer may exhibit characteristics such that the region where the liquid crystal molecules are regularly aligned is shifted in any direction from the pixel center due to some factor other than the signal for each pixel in the portion corresponding to each opening region. is there. The microlens can have a shape in which light travels in the direction of the portion where the liquid crystal molecules exhibit a good alignment state in accordance with the characteristics of the liquid crystal layer. By advancing light with a small light beam angle to the portion where the liquid crystal molecules show a good alignment state, it becomes possible to display a high-contrast image corresponding to the image signal. Thereby, a microlens for obtaining a high-contrast image can be obtained.
According to a preferred aspect of the present invention, it is desirable that the curvature of the first surface in the first direction is different from the curvature in the second direction substantially orthogonal to the first direction. In a spatial light modulation device, in particular, a liquid crystal type spatial light modulation device, the shape of an opening region that allows incident light to pass through a liquid crystal layer serving as a modulation unit is generally rectangular. When the microlens of the present invention is applied to a liquid crystal type spatial light modulator, the microlens is arranged with the long side direction of the opening region as the first direction and the short side direction of the opening region as the second direction. In this case, by providing a first surface whose curvature in the first direction is smaller than the curvature in the second direction substantially orthogonal to the first direction, light from the microlens can be efficiently incident on the aperture region. it can. Thereby, the microlens which makes it possible to use light with high efficiency can be obtained.
Moreover, as a preferable aspect of the present invention, the first surface is such that at least one of the first direction and the second direction is such that the position where light is incident on the first surface is farther from the vertex. It is desirable to have a shape that generates aberrations that are condensed at a position close to the surface. The microlens condenses light away from the apex to the aperture region efficiently by condensing the light incident on the first surface closer to the first surface as the position away from the apex is greater. Can be used efficiently. In addition, light at a position close to the apex is incident on the aperture region without excessive condensing. For this reason, compared with the case where a condensing spot is formed in the aperture region, it is possible to increase the light having a small light beam angle and improve the contrast of the image. Furthermore, by dispersing light in the opening region, deterioration of the liquid crystal, the alignment film, and the like can be reduced. As a result, it is possible to obtain a microlens that can use light with high efficiency, obtain a high-contrast image, and improve the reliability of the spatial light modulator.
Further, according to the present invention, the modulation unit that modulates incident light in accordance with the image signal, the opening that allows the incident light to enter the modulation unit, the light shielding unit that is provided around the opening, and the first curvature having the curvature. A microlens that includes one surface and a substantially flat second surface, and advances incident light in the direction of the opening, and the first surface is located on a normal line that passes through the approximate center of the second surface. The curvature in the first direction is smaller than the curvature in the second direction substantially orthogonal to the first direction, the opening has a long side in the first direction, and A spatial light modulation device having a rectangular shape with a short side in the second direction can be provided. The microlens is provided with an apex at a position other than the position on the normal line passing through the approximate center of the second surface. The shape can be decentered so as to be refracted into the part. By using a microlens to advance light to a portion where the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules is favorable, it is possible to form a high-contrast image with light that is accurately modulated according to an image signal. Further, by providing the first surface whose curvature in the first direction is smaller than the curvature in the second direction substantially orthogonal to the first direction, the light from the microlens can be efficiently incident on the aperture region. . As a result, it is possible to obtain a spatial light modulation device that can use light with high efficiency and obtain a high-contrast image.
As a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the modulation section has a liquid crystal layer, and the first surface refracts light in a predetermined direction according to the characteristics of the liquid crystal layer that changes the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules. It is desirable to have a shape. Thereby, a spatial light modulation device capable of obtaining a high-contrast image can be obtained.
Furthermore, according to the present invention, the light source unit that supplies light and the spatial light modulation device that modulates light from the light source unit according to an image signal are provided, and the spatial light modulation device includes the spatial light modulation described above. It is possible to provide an image display device characterized by being a device. By providing the spatial light modulation device described above, it is possible to use light with high efficiency and obtain a high-contrast image. Thereby, an image display device capable of displaying a bright and high-contrast image can be obtained.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below in detail with reference to the drawings.

The G light and B light reflected by the R light transmitting
The G light incident on the second color light spatial
The B light transmitted through the B light transmitting

The cross

FIG. 5 shows an example of the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules viewed from the
From FIG. 5, it can be seen that the center position of the area capable of displaying sunken black is a position shifted from the center position of the pixel. The region where the alignment state of the liquid crystal is favorable at the position shifted from the center position of the pixel is caused by the influence of the voltage applied to the adjacent pixel, the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecule, the shape of the black matrix, etc. This is thought to be due to the occurrence of a portion where the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is disturbed. In the present invention, the characteristic of the liquid crystal layer indicates that the region where the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is favorable is shifted in any direction from the center position of the pixel as described above. Further, the predetermined direction refers to a direction from the center position of the pixel to the center position of a region where the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules is favorable.
FIG. 6 illustrates the relationship between the configuration of the
FIG. 7 shows a planar configuration of the
8 and 9 illustrate the behavior of light incident from the
As shown in FIG. 8, in the XZ plane, the
The
In the present embodiment, the
Furthermore, as shown in FIG. 9, when the distance c <distance d, the distance fc> distance fd is established for the
FIG. 10 explains the effect of having a larger curvature at a position farther from the vertex C. FIG. For example, when light is refracted using the
The

The
The gray scale mask is a mask that obtains gradation by changing the light transmittance, and includes, for example, a mask in which a HEBS mask or a chrome mask has a fine aperture area distribution. Further, for pattern formation on the substrate, a chromium mask and a thermal oxide film may be used as a mask, and processing by wet etching may be performed. The
The
The
As described above, the microlens according to the present invention is suitable for use in a liquid crystal spatial light modulator provided in a projector.
