Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electro-optical device, a method for manufacturing the electro-optical device, and an electronic apparatus.
Conventionally, a technique for producing an electro-optical device such as a display by forming a predetermined pattern on a substrate with a functional material has been developed, but in recent years, a functional material is dissolved or dispersed in a predetermined solvent. A so-called droplet discharge method, in which a pattern is formed by discharging the liquid composition from a discharge head and applying it to a desired position on a substrate, has attracted attention. Since this droplet discharge method uses only the amount of functional material used for pattern formation, for example, it has the advantage that less functional material is used than the spin coating method in which the functional material is applied to the entire surface of the substrate. There is.
By the way, for example, when forming a pixel pattern of an organic electroluminescence display (hereinafter referred to as “organic EL display”) by a droplet discharge method, in order to prevent the liquid composition discharged on the substrate from flowing out to adjacent pixels, A bank (partition member) is provided on the substrate, and the liquid composition is discharged to a partitioned region surrounded by the bank. At this time, the liquid composition applied in the partition region is in a convex state in which the central portion is raised, and when the solvent is removed, the thickness increases toward the bank and the central portion is recessed. It becomes a concave shape. As a result, after removing the solvent, the functional layer composed of the functional material (for example, the light emitting layer) has a non-uniform distribution of film thickness, which causes uneven light emission (color unevenness). Occurs.
However, in various electro-optical devices such as the organic EL display, various wirings are routed in a complicated manner in order to obtain highly efficient light emission characteristics. Wiring is also routed around the partition area. For this reason, the surface shape of the upper layer portion of the bank is uneven due to the influence of the underlying structure under the bank around the partition region. Therefore, the surface shape of each upper layer portion of the banks provided at positions facing each other across the partition region may not be symmetric with respect to the center of the partition region. Therefore, the liquid composition applied in the partition region using the droplet discharge method is applied on the surface of each upper layer portion of the bank, but the surface shape of the upper layer portion is the surface region of the partition region. Since it is not symmetrical with respect to the center, when the solvent is removed, the liquid composition applied to the partition region is pulled by the bank, which causes a problem that a film having a non-uniform film thickness is formed.
Therefore, the present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and one of its purposes is that when the light emitting element is formed in the partition region surrounded by the bank, the thickness of the formed light emitting element is not uniform. It is an object to provide an electro-optical device that is suppressed and has good light emission characteristics, and an electronic apparatus equipped with the electro-optical device.
In order to solve the above problems, an electro-optical device according to the present invention includes a plurality of first wirings arranged on a substrate at a predetermined interval along one direction, and each of the plurality of first wirings. A plurality of second wirings arranged at predetermined intervals so as to cross each other, the plurality of first wirings, and the plurality of second wirings are formed to cover the first wirings, In the electro-optical device, comprising: a bank that forms a partition region corresponding to an intersection with the second wiring; and a light-emitting element that is formed in each partition region formed by the bank. A symmetrizing means is provided on the substrate for making the surface shape of the bank portion covering the first wiring facing each other across the substrate symmetrical with respect to the partition region.
According to this, the surface shape of the bank is symmetric with respect to the center of the partition region. Therefore, for example, when the light emitting element is an element having an electroluminescence element structure including a light emitting layer sandwiched between two electrode layers, and the light emitting layer is formed by a droplet discharge method. The liquid composition discharged into the partitioned area is applied at a position symmetrical to the center of the partitioned area. As a result, when the solvent in the liquid composition is removed, the liquid composition applied to the partition region is uniformly pulled by the banks provided at positions facing each other. Becomes uniform in the partition region. Therefore, variation in the thickness of the light emitting element can be suppressed, and a light emitting element having favorable light emission characteristics can be formed.
In this electro-optical device, the symmetrizing means may be a flattening means for flattening a surface shape of a portion covering the first wiring of the banks facing each other across the partition region.
According to this, the surface shape of the bank becomes flat. Therefore, for example, when the light emitting element is an element having an electroluminescence element structure including a light emitting layer sandwiched between two electrode layers, and the light emitting layer is formed by a droplet discharge method. The liquid composition discharged onto the bank is symmetric with respect to the center of the partition area. As a result, the film thickness of the light emitting layer to be formed becomes uniform in the partitioned region.
In this electro-optical device, the bank may include a first bank having lyophilicity and a second bank having liquid repellency formed on the first bank.
According to this, in the electro-optical device including the first bank having lyophilicity and the second bank having liquid repellency, variation in the thickness of the light emitting element to be formed is suppressed, and good light emission is achieved. An electro-optical device having characteristics can be realized.
In the electro-optical device, the planarizing unit may be an opening formed at a position of the first bank that is raised by the first wiring.
According to this, the surface shape of the bank becomes flat by forming the opening. As a result, the film thickness of the light emitting element to be formed becomes uniform within the partition region.
In the electro-optical device, the flattening unit may be a wiring layer formed in a depressed position around the position raised by the first wiring in the first bank.
According to this, each surface shape of the bank becomes flat by forming the wiring layer. Therefore, the thickness of the light emitting element to be formed is uniform within the partition region.
In the electro-optical device, the first wiring is a power supply line that supplies driving power for driving the light emitting elements, and the second wiring sequentially scans the light emitting elements formed in the respective partition regions. The scanning line may supply a scanning signal for selecting a light emitting element formed in a predetermined partition region.
According to this, in the electro-optical device arranged so that the feeder line and the selection line intersect each other, even if the raised portion is formed on the feeder line by the feeder line, each surface shape of the bank is flat. become.
In this electro-optical device, the light emitting element may be an electroluminescence element including an anode, a cathode formed opposite to the anode, and a light emitting layer formed between the anode and the cathode. .
According to this, in the electro-optical device provided with the electroluminescence element as the light emitting element, the film thickness of the formed electroluminescence element becomes uniform in the partitioned region.
In this electro-optical device, the electroluminescence element may be an organic electroluminescence element in which the light emitting layer is formed of an organic material.
According to this, in the electro-optical device provided with the organic electroluminescence element as the light emitting element, the film thickness of the formed organic electroluminescence element becomes uniform in the partitioned region.
In the method of manufacturing the electro-optical device according to the aspect of the invention, the plurality of first wirings arranged on the substrate at a predetermined interval along one direction and the plurality of first wirings may be crossed. A plurality of second wirings arranged at a predetermined interval, the plurality of first wirings, and the plurality of second wirings are formed so as to cover the first wiring and the second wiring. In a method for manufacturing an electro-optical device, comprising: a bank that forms a partition region corresponding to an intersection with a wiring; and a light-emitting element that is formed in each partition region formed by the bank. An opening forming step of forming an opening at a position raised by the plurality of first wirings, a bank forming step of forming the bank so as to cover the opening, and the bank A light emitting layer is formed on each of the formed partition regions. And a light-emitting layer forming step of forming.
According to this, since the opening is formed, there is no raised portion due to the first wiring. The raised step does not appear on the surface shape of the bank.

A wiring layer step of forming a wiring layer having a film thickness equal to the height of the raised portion at a recessed position around the raised position by the first wiring; A bank forming step of forming the bank so as to cover the wiring layer; The formed by the serial bank and a light-emitting layer forming step of forming a luminescent layer on each divided area.
According to this, when the wiring layer is formed, there is no raised portion due to the first wiring. The raised step does not appear on the surface shape of the bank. Therefore, for example, when the light emitting element is an element having an electroluminescence element structure including a light emitting layer sandwiched between two electrode layers, and the light emitting layer is formed by a droplet discharge method. Becomes uniform in the partition region. Therefore, variation in the thickness of the light emitting element can be suppressed, and a light emitting element having favorable light emission characteristics can be formed.
In the electro-optical device manufacturing method, the light emitting layer forming step may be performed by a droplet discharge method.
According to this, since only the amount of the light emitting material used for pattern formation is used, for example, the amount of the light emitting material to be used can be reduced as compared with the spin coating method in which the functional material is applied to the entire surface of the substrate. In addition, a light-emitting element having a light-emitting layer with a uniform thickness can be formed using a small amount of material without using a large-sized device such as a vacuum device.
The electronic apparatus of the present invention is mounted with an electro-optical device manufactured using the above-described electro-optical device manufacturing method.

As shown in FIG. 2 (b), a

In addition, a first interlayer insulating layer S1 is formed on the entire surface of the insulating layer M over the
On the first interlayer insulating layer S1, the feeder line LZ extending in the direction of the arrow Y in FIG. 2A is formed. The power supply line LZ is formed above the
Then, on the second interlayer insulating layer S2, a region sandwiched between the scanning line LX (see FIG. 2A), the data line LY, and the power supply line LZ serves as a substantially rectangular anode. The

Thereafter, as shown in FIG. 3D, silicon oxide (SiO 2 ) is formed on the entire surface of the insulating layer M over the
Subsequently, the power supply line LZ is formed by patterning an aluminum layer formed by sputtering, for example, on the first interlayer insulating layer S1 by using a photolithography method or the like. Further, a second interlayer insulating layer S2 is formed by depositing silicon oxide (SiO 2 ) over the first interlayer insulating layer S1 and the power supply line LZ by, for example, a plasma CVD method (FIG. 4). (See (a)). At this time, as shown in FIG. 4A, the feeder line LZ is formed above the

Next, as shown in FIG. 4C, a mask K having an opening on the second interlayer insulating layer S2 facing the upper side of the feeder line LZ and a region excluding the peripheral portion of the

Subsequently, as shown in FIG. 5A, a
Next, the
Then, the position of the
Thereafter, while the
Thereafter, the
Thereafter, the droplet discharge heads 30 for discharging the liquid composition Lr in which the red light emitting layer material is dissolved or dispersed in the solvent are sequentially selected. Then, in the same manner as described above, as shown in FIG. 6A, each of the holes formed previously by discharging the liquid composition Lr formed into droplets from the nozzle Nr of the
Thereafter, similarly, a droplet discharge head that discharges a liquid composition in which a green light emitting layer material is dissolved or dispersed in a solvent, and a droplet that discharges a liquid composition in which a blue light emitting layer material is dissolved or dispersed in a solvent. The ejection heads are sequentially selected (not shown). Then, the liquid composition formed into droplets from the nozzles of each droplet discharge head is discharged into the
Thereafter, the
As a result, the unevenness on the surface of the upper layer portion T of the liquid
Thereafter, a LiF layer, a Ca layer, an Al layer, and the like are laminated on the liquid
As described above, according to the present embodiment, the following effects are obtained.
(1) According to the present embodiment, the

(Second Embodiment)
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. The organic EL display 1a of the second embodiment is the same except that the structure of the
FIG. 7A shows a plan view for explaining a
As shown in FIG. 7A, similarly to the first embodiment, the scanning line LX that supplies the scanning signal formed on the
In the present embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 7A and 7B, the
The

Next, a method for manufacturing the organic EL display 1a having the above structure will be described with reference to FIGS.
As in the first embodiment, after the first and
Next, a mask (not shown) in which the peripheral portion of the

As a result, the surface shape of the upper layer portion T of each liquid
Next, as shown in FIG. 9B, a liquid composition in which a hole transport layer material is dissolved or dispersed in a solvent on the

As described above, according to the present embodiment, the following effects are obtained.
(1) According to the present embodiment, the

(2) Further, according to the present embodiment, since the
(3) According to this embodiment, since the variation in the film thickness of each organic EL element OLED can be suppressed, the organic EL display 1a having good light emission characteristics can be realized. (Third embodiment)
Next, application of the electronic devices of the organic EL displays 1 and 1a as the electro-optical devices described in the first and second embodiments will be described with reference to FIG. The
