Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a peripheral device connected to a host device such as a personal computer (PC), and particularly uses a power source (bus power) obtained from the host device through a bus, not a dedicated power source (self-power) by an AC adapter or the like. It is related with the peripheral device which operates.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, peripheral devices such as PCs that operate with bus power obtained from a cable such as USB or IEEE1394 have been provided.
However, when the power consumption of a device externally connected to a PC, such as various disk drives, is relatively high, power consumption that exceeds the PC standard may occur, and the bus power is used as it is. May not be appropriate. In particular, when the USB bus is used, since the maximum current allowable on the PC side is smaller (for example, about 500 mA), the instantaneous current (for example, about 800 mA) generated at the start on the disk drive side is exceeded. Become.
In view of this, a peripheral device having an auxiliary power supply for processing bus power therein is conventionally provided (see Patent Document 1).

The
The booster circuit 15 boosts the voltage of the secondary battery 14 (2.5 to 4.1 V in the case of a lithium ion battery) and converts it into power necessary for the operation of the HDD block 12 (for example, 5 V, 800 mA (max)). And supply.

The
However, the conventional example 1 has a problem that the secondary battery and the circuit components are enlarged in order to cope with the current of 800 mA generated at the time of starting the hard disk drive, for example.
For example, even if there is a booster circuit with an efficiency of 100%, a current of 1.6 A flows at the entrance of the booster circuit. In fact, if the efficiency is 50%, a current of about 3 A flows. Therefore, it is necessary to make the circuit configuration of a sufficient scale.
Further, in the above-described conventional example 2, since the hard disk drive can be started after the charging of the boost current is completed, there is a problem that the starting time is delayed until the charging is completed. In addition, the hard disk drive may require a current exceeding 500 mA even when the hard disk drive is not started, and in this case, power is insufficient.
Therefore, the present invention ensures that sufficient power is ensured in a peripheral device that operates using bus power from the host device without departing from the standard of bus power and without causing an increase in size of components. An object is to provide a peripheral device capable of realizing various operations.
In order to achieve the above object, a peripheral device according to the present invention includes a bus power input unit that inputs bus power from a host device, a secondary power source unit as an auxiliary power source, and the secondary power source unit using the bus power. A charging circuit for charging, a boosting circuit for boosting an output voltage of the secondary power supply unit, and a current adding unit for adding an output current from the boosting circuit to an input current based on the bus power.
According to the peripheral device of the present invention, the current generated by the secondary power supply unit as the auxiliary power supply and the booster circuit is added to the input current of the bus power and used.
For this reason, it is not necessary to handle a large current in the secondary power supply unit or the booster circuit, the components can be downsized, and a sufficient current can be obtained without departing from the bus power standard.
In addition, since the bus power current is monitored and the output current of the booster circuit is controlled in response to the change, the power of the secondary power supply unit can be used effectively, and unnecessary power consumption is reduced. There is an advantage that can be suppressed.
In the embodiment of the present invention, the bus power input current obtained from the USB bus is sent to the power supply line to the HDD block, and the secondary battery is charged by the charging circuit using a part thereof. The output voltage of the secondary battery is boosted by a booster circuit, and the output current is added to the current of the power supply line and supplied to the HDD block.
At this time, the input current of the bus power is monitored by the current monitoring circuit, and when the power consumption in the HDD block increases and the increase in the input current is confirmed, the output current from the booster circuit is increased, and the bus power By supplementing the input current, sufficient drive power on the HDD block side is ensured while maintaining the current value on the USB bus side within the standard.
