Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a cell module assembly in which two or more cell modules each having a hollow electrolyte membrane are integrally fixed, and a fuel cell including the cell module assembly.
A fuel cell directly converts chemical energy into electrical energy by supplying fuel and an oxidant to two electrically connected electrodes and causing the fuel to be oxidized electrochemically. Unlike thermal power generation, it is not subject to the Carnot cycle, so it exhibits high energy conversion efficiency. A solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell is a fuel cell that uses a solid polymer electrolyte membrane as an electrolyte, and has advantages such as being easy to downsize and operating at a low temperature. It is attracting attention as a power source for mobile objects.
In the solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell, when hydrogen is used as the fuel, the reaction of the formula (1) proceeds at the anode.
H 2 → 2H + + 2e − (1)
The electrons generated by the equation (1) reach the cathode after working with an external load via an external circuit. Then, the proton generated in the formula (1) moves by electroosmosis from the anode side to the cathode side in the solid polymer electrolyte membrane in a state of being hydrated with water.
Further, when oxygen is used as the oxidizing agent, the reaction of the formula (2) proceeds at the cathode.
2H + + (1/2) O 2 + 2e − → H 2 O (2)
The water produced at the cathode mainly passes through the gas diffusion layer and is discharged to the outside.
As described above, the fuel cell is a clean power generation device that has no emissions other than water.
Conventionally, as a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell, a catalyst layer serving as an anode and a cathode is provided on one surface of a planar solid polymer electrolyte membrane, and the resulting planar membrane / electrode assembly is obtained. There has been developed a fuel cell stack obtained by laminating a plurality of flat single cells prepared by further providing gas diffusion layers on both sides and finally sandwiching them with a planar separator.
In order to improve the output density of the solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell, a proton conductive polymer membrane having a very thin film thickness is used as the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. This film thickness is already 100 μm or less, and even if a thinner electrolyte membrane is used to further improve the power density, the thickness of the single cell cannot be dramatically reduced from the present one. Similarly, the catalyst layer, the gas diffusion layer, the separator, and the like have been made thinner, but there is a limit to improving the output density per unit volume even by making all these members thinner. Therefore, it is expected that it will not be possible to meet the demand for miniaturization in the future.
In addition, a sheet-like carbon material having excellent corrosivity is usually used for the separator. This carbon material itself is also expensive. However, in order to distribute the fuel gas and the oxidant gas almost uniformly over the entire surface of the planar membrane / electrode assembly, a gas is usually provided on the surface of the separator. Since the groove to be the flow path is finely processed, the processing makes the separator very expensive, which increases the manufacturing cost of the fuel cell.
In addition to the above problems, for flat single cells, the periphery of single cells stacked in multiple layers should be reliably sealed so that fuel gas and oxidant gas do not leak from the gas flow path. However, there are many problems such as technical difficulties, and power generation efficiency may decrease due to deflection or deformation of the planar membrane / electrode assembly.
In recent years, a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell has been developed in which a cell module having electrodes on the inner surface side and outer surface side of a hollow electrolyte membrane is used as a basic power generation unit. (For example, see
Usually, in a fuel cell having such a hollow cell module, it is not necessary to use a member corresponding to a separator used in a flat type. Since different types of gas are supplied to the inner surface and the outer surface for power generation, it is not necessary to form a gas flow path. Therefore, cost reduction is expected in the manufacture. Further, since the cell module has a three-dimensional shape, the specific surface area with respect to the volume can be increased as compared with the flat single cell, and the power generation output density per volume can be expected to be improved.
Usually, a suitable number of hollow cell modules are aligned with a predetermined interval in parallel in the longitudinal direction so that the reaction gas can be uniformly and smoothly supplied to the outer surface of the cell module, and fixed together. By collecting the anode and cathode of each cell module, a cell module assembly is formed, and the cell module assembly is used alone, or two or more cell module assemblies are connected in series or in parallel as required. Connect to and incorporate into the fuel cell.
However, in order to form a cell module assembly, it is very laborious to accurately position, align, and fix a large number of hollow cell modules. Therefore, the productivity of the cell module assembly is not so good, and it is not easy to change the alignment pattern.
In addition, from the viewpoint of increasing the current collection efficiency of the hollow cell module, it is desired that the adhesion between the cell module and the current collection member is excellent.
In view of such circumstances, the first object of the present invention is to accurately and quickly align cell modules having a basic component of a hollow electrolyte membrane provided with electrodes on its inner and outer surfaces. It is an object of the present invention to provide a highly productive cell module assembly that can be fixed.
The second object of the present invention is to provide a cell module assembly with high productivity by reducing the number of assembly parts by using a member for fixing the cell module as a current collecting member. There is.
In addition, the third object of the present invention is that the member for fixing the cell module plays the role of a current collecting member, so that the adhesion between the cell module and the current collecting member is excellent and the current collecting efficiency is high. It is to provide a cell module assembly.
Furthermore, a fourth object of the present invention is to provide a fuel cell using any one of the above cell module assemblies.
The cell module assembly of the present invention is a cell module assembly in which two or more cell modules having a pair of electrodes provided on an inner surface and an outer surface of a hollow electrolyte membrane are fixed integrally with a clamp, A first clamping element, a second clamping element, and a biasing member, wherein each of the first and second clamping elements has at least one alignment portion; And the alignment portion of the second clamp element form a pair to sandwich two or more cell modules, and at least one of the pair of alignment portions includes two or more cell modules. Positioning recesses that can be aligned so that the longitudinal directions of the cell modules are parallel to each other are provided at predetermined intervals, and the first and second clamping elements are disposed between the pair of alignment portions. The cell module is expanded and contracted so that the cell module can be inserted and fixed, and the biasing member has a clamping force for fixing the cell module between the pair of alignment portions. The two or more cell modules can be applied to at least one of the first and second clamping elements, and the two or more cell modules are sandwiched between the pair of alignment portions at the position of the positioning recess, The cell modules are aligned so that their longitudinal directions are parallel to each other.
The cell module assembly of the present invention can easily and efficiently accurately align and fix a plurality of cell modules by the clamp as described above.
In order to make it easier and more efficient to align and fix a plurality of cell modules, it is preferable that the positioning recesses are provided in both of the paired alignment portions.
As a specific form of the cell module assembly of the present invention, each of the first and second clamp elements has at least two alignment portions parallel to the direction in which the cell modules are aligned. The alignment portions of the elements and the alignment portions of the second clamp elements are alternately arranged, and the alignment portions form a pair and sandwich two or more cell modules to form two or more rows, and the cells are arranged in each row. Examples include modules that are sandwiched and arranged in two or more rows.
More specifically, the first clamp element includes a stage portion provided with a support surface for supporting the second clamp element, and an alignment portion protruding from the support surface, The clamp element forms a structure in which the alignment portion of the first clamp element and the alignment portion of the second clamp element are paired with the first clamp element to sandwich two or more cell modules. There are those that are arranged and supported on the support surface of the stage portion in a slidable state so that the interval between the paired alignment portions can be expanded and reduced.
At this time, both the first clamp element having the stage portion and the second clamp element supported on the stage portion have at least two alignment portions in which the cell modules are aligned in parallel. The alignment portions of the first clamp elements and the alignment portions of the second clamp elements are alternately arranged, and the alignment portions form a pair to form two or more structures sandwiching two or more cell modules. The urging member is mounted between a pair of alignment portions and another pair of alignment portions adjacent to the alignment portions, and the cell modules are sandwiched between the rows of the structure in which the cell modules are sandwiched. It is good also as a cell module aggregate arranged in more than a row.
Of the first and second clamp elements, at least a portion of the alignment portion that sandwiches the cell module is formed of a conductive material, and is disposed on the inner surface side or outer surface side of each aligned cell module. When the clamp is in contact with the collected current collector and functions as a current collection member, the number of components of the cell module assembly can be reduced. In addition, the sandwiched portion formed of the conductive material is in contact with the inner surface side current collector or the outer surface side current collector in a state where surface pressure is applied, so that the current collection efficiency can be increased.
At this time, at least one of the first and second clamping elements including the positioning recess is formed of a conductive material, and the cell module has a current collector in contact with the outer surface side, It is preferable that the outer surface portion of the cell module is sandwiched between the paired alignment portions at the position of the positioning recess, and the current collector on the outer surface side is in contact with the inner surface of the positioning recess. Current collection efficiency can be further increased by increasing the surface pressure between the current collector member and the outer current collector, and the contact area between them.
The portion including the positioning recess of at least one of the first and second clamp elements is formed of a conductive material, and the cell module is in contact with an inner peripheral surface of the cell module and has a gas flow. A columnar current collector provided with a groove in the path, and the columnar current collector disposed on the inner surface side of the cell module is located at the position of the positioning recess between the pair of alignment portions. It is preferable to be sandwiched. This is because the current collection efficiency can be further increased by increasing the surface pressure between the clamp, which is the current collecting member, and the current collecting material on the inner surface side and the contact area between them.
The cell module assembly of the present invention as described above can be incorporated into a fuel cell by itself or by connecting a plurality of cell module assemblies in parallel or in series.
Since the cell module assembly of the present invention can efficiently align and fix a plurality of cell modules constituting the cell module assembly, the cell module assembly is excellent in productivity.
Further, since the member for fixing the cell module also serves as a current collecting member, the number of assembly parts can be reduced, and thus the productivity can be further increased. Furthermore, since the member for fixing the cell module also serves as a current collecting member, the adhesiveness between the cell module and the current collecting member is excellent, and thus the current collecting efficiency is high.
The fuel cell of the present invention using such a cell module assembly has excellent productivity and high battery characteristics.
Hereinafter, an embodiment of a cell module assembly of the present invention and a fuel cell including the cell module assembly will be described with reference to FIGS. In the following embodiment, the description will focus on a polymer electrolyte fuel cell using hydrogen gas as the fuel and air (oxygen) as the oxidant, but the present invention is not limited to the following embodiment.

If the cell module can sufficiently supply the reaction gas to the inner surface side of the hollow electrolyte membrane, one end of the hollow portion (tube) may be sealed and the other end opened. In particular, in the present embodiment, hydrogen gas containing almost no non-reactive component is supplied as a fuel gas into the hollow of the cell module, and the diffusibility of hydrogen molecules is high, so that the fuel gas can be consumed. Therefore, the reaction gas can be sufficiently supplied even in the hollow portion whose one end is sealed. At this time, either the positive electrode side or the negative electrode side collector collecting portion may be arranged at the open end of the cell module, and the form of the cell module assembly (cell cartridge), the connection between the cell module assemblies, the exterior It may be determined in consideration of the shape of the container. Examples of the method of sealing one end of the cell module include a method of injecting resin or the like into the hollow one end, but is not particularly limited.
In this embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 11 to 13, only one end is opened, and the takeout portion (the outer surface of the inner surface side current collector) of the inner surface side current collector (negative electrode side current collector) 4 is exposed on the opening end side. 1) A
The inner diameter, outer diameter, length and the like of the tubular solid
The perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin membrane is preferably thin from the viewpoint of improving proton conductivity, but if it is too thin, the function of isolating gas is lowered and the permeation amount of aprotic hydrogen is increased. However, in comparison with a conventional fuel cell in which flat cells for fuel cells are stacked, a fuel cell manufactured by collecting a large number of hollow cell modules can take a large electrode area. Even when is used, sufficient output can be obtained. From this viewpoint, the thickness of the perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin film is 10 to 100 μm, more preferably 50 to 60 μm, and still more preferably 50 to 55 μm.
Moreover, from the preferable range of said outer diameter and film thickness, the preferable range of an internal diameter is 0.01-10 mm, More preferably, it is 0.1-1 mm, More preferably, it is 0.1-0.5 mm. is there.
In FIG. 1, the
Since the fuel cell of the present invention has a cell module having a hollow shape, the electrode area per unit volume can be increased as compared with a fuel cell having a flat cell. Even when an electrolyte membrane that does not have proton conductivity as high as that of a fluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin membrane is used, a fuel cell having a high output density per unit volume can be obtained. As the solid polymer electrolyte membrane, perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin and materials used for the electrolyte membrane of solid polymer fuel cells can be used. For example, fluorine other than perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin can be used. One kind of proton exchange groups such as at least sulfonic acid groups, phosphonic acid groups, and phosphoric acid groups, based on hydrocarbons such as polyolefins such as polystyrene ion exchange resins and polystyrene cation exchange membranes having sulfonic acid groups A complex of a basic polymer and a strong acid, which is disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 11-503262, etc., in which a basic polymer such as polybenzimidazole, polypyrimidine, and polybenzoxazole is doped with a strong acid And polymer electrolytes such as solid polymer electrolytes. A solid polymer electrolyte membrane using such an electrolyte should be reinforced with a perfluorocarbon polymer in the form of a fibril, a fabric, a non-fabric, or a porous sheet, or the membrane surface can be coated with an inorganic oxide or metal. It can also be reinforced. Examples of the perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin membrane include commercially available products such as Nafion (trade name) manufactured by DuPont, USA and Flemion (trade name) manufactured by Asahi Glass.
In the present embodiment, a perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin membrane, which is a kind of proton conductive membrane and one of solid polymer electrolyte membranes, is described as an electrolyte membrane, but it is used in the fuel cell of the present invention. The electrolyte membrane to be used is not particularly limited, and may be proton-conductive or other ion-conductive such as hydroxide ion or oxide ion (O 2− ). The proton conductive electrolyte membrane is not limited to the solid polymer electrolyte membrane as described above, but a porous electrolyte plate impregnated with an aqueous phosphoric acid solution, a proton conductor made of porous glass, or a hydrogel Phosphated phosphate glass, organic-inorganic hybrid proton conductive membrane having proton conductive functional groups introduced into the surface and pores of nanoporous glass, inorganic metal fiber reinforced electrolyte polymer, etc. can be used. . Depending on the configuration of the fuel cell, for example, when the present invention is applied to a solid oxide fuel cell or to a solid polymer fuel cell using hydroxide ions as charge carriers, oxygen ions or It may be a solid electrolyte membrane that conducts ions serving as other charge carriers such as hydroxide ions.
Each electrode provided on the inner surface and outer surface of the electrolyte membrane (perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin membrane) can be formed using an electrode material used in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell. Usually, an electrode configured by laminating a catalyst layer and a gas diffusion layer in order from the electrolyte membrane side is used.
The catalyst layer contains catalyst particles and may contain a proton conductive material for increasing the utilization efficiency of the catalyst particles. As the proton conductive material, those used as the material of the electrolyte membrane can be used. As the catalyst particles, catalyst particles in which a catalyst component is supported on a conductive material such as a carbon material such as carbonaceous particles or carbonaceous fibers are preferably used. Since the fuel cell of the present invention has a cell module having a hollow shape, the electrode area per unit volume can be made larger than that of a fuel cell having a flat cell. Even when components are used, a fuel cell having a high output density per unit volume can be obtained. The catalyst component is not particularly limited as long as it has a catalytic action for hydrogen oxidation reaction at the anode and oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode. For example, platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir) , Rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), osmium (Os), tungsten (W), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn) , Vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo), gallium (Ga), aluminum (Al) and other metals, or alloys thereof. Pt and an alloy made of Pt and another metal such as Ru are preferable.
As the gas diffusion layer, a porous conductive material mainly composed of a carbon material such as carbonaceous particles and / or carbonaceous fibers can be used. The sizes of the carbonaceous particles and the carbonaceous fibers may be appropriately selected in consideration of the dispersibility in the solution when the gas diffusion layer is produced, the drainage property of the obtained gas diffusion layer, and the like. The gas diffusion layer is, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polytetrafluoroethylene, perfluorocarbon alkoxyalkane, ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene polymer, or these from the point of improving the drainage of moisture such as generated water It is preferable to perform water-repellent processing by impregnating a mixture of the above or the like or forming a water-repellent layer using these substances.
In addition, the structure of each electrode provided in the inner surface and outer surface of a hollow electrolyte membrane, the material used for an electrode, etc. may be the same, and may differ.
The method of providing a pair of electrodes on the inner and outer surfaces of the tubular electrolyte membrane is not particularly limited. For example, first, a tubular electrolyte membrane is prepared. The method for preparing the tubular electrolyte membrane is not particularly limited, and a commercially available electrolyte membrane formed in a tube shape can also be used. Then, a solution containing electrolyte and catalyst particles is applied and dried on the inner and outer surfaces of the tubular electrolyte membrane to form a catalyst layer, and carbonaceous particles and / or carbonaceous fibers are contained on the two catalyst layers. The method of apply | coating and drying a solution and forming a gas diffusion layer is mentioned. At this time, the catalyst layer and the gas diffusion layer are formed so that a hollow portion exists on the inner surface of the gas diffusion layer formed on the inner surface side of the electrolyte membrane.
Alternatively, first, a tube material (tubular carbonaceous material) containing a carbon material such as carbonaceous particles and / or carbonaceous fibers is used as the gas diffusion layer of the first electrode (anode), and the gas A solution containing an electrolyte and catalyst particles is applied to the outer surface of the diffusion layer and dried to form a catalyst layer to produce a first electrode, and then a solution containing the electrolyte is applied to the outer surface of the catalyst layer and dried. Then, a catalyst layer of the second electrode (cathode) is formed on the outer surface of the electrolyte membrane layer and the electrolyte membrane layer, and a solution containing a carbon material is applied to the outer surface of the catalyst layer and dried to form a gas for the second electrode. A method for forming a diffusion layer is also included. The tubular carbonaceous material can be obtained, for example, by dispersing a carbon material such as carbonaceous particles and an epoxy and / or phenolic resin in a solvent to form a tubular shape, thermosetting, and firing.
In addition, the solvent used when forming the electrolyte membrane, the catalyst layer, and the gas diffusion layer may be appropriately selected according to the material to be dispersed and / or dissolved, and the coating method when forming each layer is also as follows. It can be appropriately selected from various methods such as a spray method and a brush coating method.
The cell module having a hollow shape used in the fuel cell of the present invention is not limited to the configuration exemplified above, and a layer other than the catalyst layer and the gas diffusion layer may be provided for the purpose of enhancing the function of the cell module. . In this embodiment, the anode is provided inside the hollow electrolyte membrane and the cathode is provided outside, but the cathode may be provided inside and the anode may be provided outside.
The inner surface side current collector (in this embodiment, the negative electrode side current collector) 4 is a columnar current collector having an outer diameter in contact with the inner peripheral surface of the cell module. The outer peripheral surface has an axial direction (longitudinal direction) of the cell module.
The outer surface side current collector (in this embodiment, the positive electrode side current collector) 5 can be manufactured, for example, by winding a metal wire in a spring shape.
As the metal used as the inner surface side or outer surface side current collector, for example, at least one metal selected from Al, Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr, Ta, Ti, Zr, Sm, In, etc., Or their alloys such as stainless steel are preferred. Further, the surface thereof may be coated with Au, Pt, conductive resin or the like. Of these, stainless steel and titanium are preferred because of their excellent corrosion resistance. The thickness of the wire and the number of turns of the spring are not particularly limited.

(Cell module assembly)
In the present invention, the cell modules as described above are sandwiched by clamps, and two or more are fixed together to form a cell module assembly. Hereinafter, the cell module assembly will be described with reference to FIGS. 7 to 17, the specific structure of the
An example of the cell module assembly is a
In the present embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 11 to 13, as the
The
In the present embodiment, the pair of wide front and back surfaces of the
The cell module assembly of the present invention is characterized by a clamp that integrally fixes two or more cell modules. Hereinafter, the present invention will be described by taking a clamp having a structure as shown in FIGS. 3 is a schematic view of the clamp applied to the present invention, and is a view of one end of the cell module fixed by the clamp as viewed from the end face side, and FIG. 4 is a diagram of the first clamp element in FIG. FIG. 5 is a schematic view of the second clamping element in FIG.
As shown in FIG. 3, the
In addition, the
Further, the
As described above, the
Hereinafter, the
In the present invention, the structure of the
Moreover, the clamp part which fixes the end of a some cell module may be comprised from a some clamp. For example, it is possible to divide a cell module constituting one cell module assembly into several parts, fix each using a plurality of clamps, and connect these clamps with appropriate members.

The positioning recess 28 provided in the aligning portion 27 may be provided in only one of the pair of aligning
The shape of the positioning recess 28 is not particularly limited as long as the position of the cell module can be determined and aligned. However, the positioning recess 28 has a shape that fits (fits) the shape of the portion sandwiched in the positioning recess 28 of the
Further, when the
For the reasons described above, the clamp 24 (clamp 24B) shown in FIG. 3 fixes the cell module on the outer surface of the cell module (including the take-out
In order to make the shape of the positioning recess conform to the shape of the portion sandwiched between the recesses, for example, an adhesive (conductive) is applied to the surface of the positioning recess, and the recess and the cell are applied. Fill the gap with the module surface, or increase the contact area between the dent and the cell module surface by subjecting the surface of the dent for positioning to unevenness (mat processing) to increase the surface area, or A member having a biasing force such as a leaf spring (preferably having a biasing force and conductivity) is disposed on the surface of the positioning recess, and the member such as the leaf spring, the recess, the member such as the leaf spring, and the cell module. Can be in close contact.
The two or
Therefore, depending on the direction in which the reaction gas supplied to the outer surface side of the cell module flows, it is preferable that the positioning recesses 28 are provided at regular intervals so that the intervals between the cell modules can be constant. The length of the interval between the positioning recesses 28 may be determined as long as it can supply a sufficient amount of reaction gas to the outer surface of the cell module.
From the same point of view, as shown in FIG. 3, when the

For example, in the present embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the

In order to increase the contact area between the inner surface side

Examples of the conductive material that can be used as a material for forming the clamp element 25 include those used for current collecting members of flat fuel cells, such as metals, carbon materials, conductive ceramics, and conductive materials. Examples thereof include resins. These conductive materials may be used alone or in combination. Specific examples of the metal material include at least one metal selected from Al, Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr, Ta, Ti, Zr, Sm, In, and the like, or stainless steel (SUS). These alloys are mentioned. SUS and Ti are preferable from the viewpoint of the strength of the obtained clamp element 25, Al and Ti are preferable from the viewpoint of weight reduction, and Cu and Al are preferable from the viewpoint of conductivity. The metal material can be appropriately selected depending on the environment to which the clamp element 25 is exposed. For example, when the clamp element 25 is in contact with hydrogen, it is preferable to select one that has resistance to hydrogen embrittlement in which the metal material becomes brittle due to hydrogen adsorption. Further, when corrosion resistance is required, it is preferable to use Ti, SUS or the like.
As shown in FIGS. 14 to 16, the
As described above, the fuel cell configured using the cell module assembly of the present invention has high productivity, and, depending on the material of the clamp, has excellent productivity and power generation efficiency.
The cell cartridge as described above includes an accommodating portion that accommodates two or more of the cell cartridges, a cartridge connecting portion that electrically connects the positive electrode output portion and the negative electrode output portion of the accommodated cell cartridge, and the connected cell cartridge. The positive electrode output part and the negative electrode output part can be accommodated and used in an exterior container having a positive electrode output terminal and a negative electrode output terminal, respectively.
Hereinafter, the exterior container will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 16 shows an

As described above, a fuel cell in which two or more cell cartridges (cell module aggregates) connected to a plurality of cell modules are accommodated in an outer container and electrically connected is a cell connected to the cell cartridge. By supplying hydrogen and air (oxygen) to the hollow inside (anode, fuel electrode in this embodiment) and the outer surface (cathode, air electrode in this embodiment) of the module, it is possible to generate an electrochemical reaction and generate electric power.
