Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an exposure head control method and a printing apparatus that prints an image using the exposure head control method.
In recent years, laser beam printers have become widespread as printers that can print electronic data at high speed and high quality. Furthermore, recently, with an increase in demand for colorization of printed documents, laser beam printers capable of color printing have become widespread. However, a laser beam type printer requires a complicated optical system, and there is a limit to downsizing and cost reduction due to the size and difficulty of adjustment of members.
即ち、複数の色としては、通常、C(シアン)、Y(イエロー)、M(マゼンタ)、K(ブラック)の4色を用いる場合が多い。 Color printing is generally performed using a plurality of colors. That is, as a plurality of colors, usually four colors of C (cyan), Y (yellow), M (magenta), and K (black) are often used. As described above, it is difficult to reduce the size and cost of a laser beam printer, and if four optical systems for exposing these four colors are prepared individually, a total of four systems are required, so that they are very large and expensive. It becomes. Therefore, a relatively inexpensive product among printers using a laser beam system is configured to share one optical system for four colors. This is a system in which printing is performed four times, one color at a time, using one optical system, and is called a four-rotation system. The four-rotation method is disadvantageous in that the speed of color printing is slow in principle and it takes four times as long as the case of one color (monochrome).
In order to compensate for the drawbacks of the laser beam method, LED printers that perform exposure using an LED head have appeared. The LED printer uses an LED array in which a large number of LED elements are arranged in a straight line, and the LED array is installed in the same direction as the main scanning direction in the case of a laser beam to perform exposure. Since there is no movable part such as a laser beam and a complicated optical system is not required, adjustment is relatively easy and downsizing is possible. Further, since it is a semiconductor product, it can be expected to further reduce the cost due to the mass production effect.
Since the LED head is suitable for downsizing, a color printer provided with four LED heads can be realized with a smaller size and lower cost than a laser beam system. By providing four heads, four colors can be exposed simultaneously, and printing can be performed at a speed four times higher than that of the four-rotation method. This method is called a tandem method.
The LED head is composed of an LED array in which a large number of LED elements are arranged as described above, and the print resolution in the main scanning direction is determined by the arrangement density of the LED elements. The printing resolution can be increased as the density is increased. On the other hand, when the density of the LED elements is increased, it becomes difficult to manufacture circuit elements for individually controlling the LED elements, and the cost of the LED head increases. In order to avoid this problem, for example, a technique of an LED print head described in Patent Document 1 has been proposed.
The above-mentioned LED print head is prepared by preparing two sets of LED arrays having a density that is half the arrangement density of the LED elements that are finally required, and shifting them by a pitch that is half the LED element density. is there. Since each LED array may have a relatively low element density, an increase in cost can be suppressed. Moreover, a desired pixel density can be obtained by the two LED arrays complementing the pixel density. FIG. 10 shows a schematic diagram of an LED element arrangement when this LED head is used. In FIG. 10, the arrays indicated by
On the other hand, there is a problem peculiar to the tandem method as compared with the four-rotation method. One of them is a problem of image shift between colors due to an LED head mounting error. In the tandem method, since each color is exposed using a separate head, if the mounting position of the head is deviated, a printing misalignment appears between colors, resulting in degradation of image quality. The head mounting accuracy is mechanical, and there is a certain limit to increasing the accuracy. Even if the installation error is adjusted at the time of shipment from the factory, the error may appear or expand due to expansion or aging due to a difference in temperature conditions for each use environment. Such a problem of color misregistration in a plurality of systems is called registration misregistration.
In order to deal with such problems, proposals have been made to perform image processing on print data. This corrects the image data by calculating the value of a pixel at a new position corresponding to the shift amount so as to cancel the shift amount due to the head mounting error.
Image data correction based on the above proposal will be described with reference to FIG. In FIG. 11, the circles indicate the position of each pixel in the original print data, and the solid line indicates the main scanning line in the original print data. At the same time, each LED head light emitting element and LED head mounting line ideally mounted are shown. Is. On the other hand, the crosses in FIG. 11 indicate the light emitting elements of the LED heads actually attached, and the dotted lines indicate the LED head attachment lines. In FIG. 11, the ideal attachment line and the actual attachment line form an angle θ. This attachment angle error θ is hereinafter referred to as skew. Note that in FIG. 11, θ is intentionally exaggerated for the sake of clarity, but in reality, this angle is extremely small, and the angle itself is not large enough to be perceived by human eyes. Absent.
Here, as an example of the correction of the image data described above, FIG. 12 shows a case where the closest input pixel value is used as the correction value. This method has a feature that the arithmetic processing is simple, but as a result of correcting the image data, a stepped step appears as shown in FIG. In other words, the correction amount necessary for each pixel is not necessarily the unit of one pixel of the original input image, but the method shown in FIG. It is a cause of deterioration.
Therefore, when correction is to be performed with high accuracy, it is necessary to consider a correction amount of less than one pixel. One such proposal is Patent Document 2. This document discloses a method for obtaining the value (density) of an output pixel by arithmetic processing using the values of a plurality of input pixels existing in the vicinity of the output pixel. By performing such arithmetic processing, it is possible to alleviate the occurrence of the stepped step as shown in FIG. 13 and perform smoother correction as shown in FIG.
When printing is performed using the LED head as shown in FIG. 10, the pixel density is increased in the main scanning direction as described above, and high-quality printing is possible. On the other hand, when looking in the sub-scanning direction, since the LED elements of the first and second LED arrays are shifted by the arrangement interval D between the LED arrays, the overall arrangement is zigzag. Therefore, if a straight line extending in the main scanning direction is printed, the result is a zigzag line as shown in FIG. 15, and there is a first problem that a straight line cannot be printed.
On the other hand, in some inexpensive LED heads that control the cost, the light emission control of each LED element for image printing is basically either turning on or off each element. There is. With such an LED head, it is impossible to produce an intermediate gradation by delicately controlling the light emission level of each element. Hereinafter, such an LED head that performs light emission control only by ON or OFF is referred to as a binary head.
Therefore, by controlling the light emission drive time of each LED array even if the arrangement interval is deviated between the plurality of LED arrays, pixel data in the same main scanning direction is caused to emit light so as to be aligned in the same main scanning direction, and There is a problem to be solved in terms of increasing the resolution in the sub-scanning direction even with a binary head in which the light emission of each LED element takes only the binary value of ON or OFF.
An object of the present invention is to make it possible to print a straight line when a straight line extending in the main scanning direction is printed even if the arrangement interval is shifted between the plurality of LED arrays. Further, it is possible to provide an exposure head control method and a printing apparatus using such an exposure head that can obtain a high-quality correction processing result with an increased resolution in the sub-scanning direction even if an inexpensive binary head is used. It is.
In order to solve the first problem, an exposure head control method according to the present invention includes a plurality of light emitting element arrays in which arrangement positions of a plurality of light emitting elements arranged in the main scanning direction are shifted from each other in the sub scanning direction. The exposure head control method is configured to control the light emission timing of each of the light emitting element arrays toward the exposure medium by an external control signal, the light emission driving time of the light emitting element array. The interval T is determined in synchronization with the relative transport speed v between the exposure medium and the exposure head.
According to this control method, the exposure head is configured such that the arrangement positions of the plurality of light emitting elements arranged in the main scanning direction are shifted from each other, and the plurality of such light emitting element arrays are spaced from each other in the sub scanning direction by a distance D. It is arranged by shifting. The individual light emitting element arrays emit light all at once, but the light emission timing can be controlled by a control signal from the outside of the exposure head. Since the light emission drive time interval T between the plurality of light emitting element arrays is determined in synchronization with the exposure medium transport speed v, even if the arrangement interval between the plurality of LED arrays is shifted by D in the sub-scanning direction, When a straight line extending in the main scanning direction is printed, it becomes possible to print a straight line as a whole instead of a zigzag line due to the synchronized action of the light emission timing.
In this exposure head control method, the light emission drive time interval T can be determined by T = D / v. By determining the light emission drive time interval T by this equation, an accurate tuning action can be obtained.
Furthermore, in order to solve the second problem, the printing apparatus using the exposure head according to the present invention includes a plurality of light emitting element arrays in which the arrangement positions of the plurality of light emitting elements arranged in the main scanning direction are shifted from each other in the sub scanning direction. And m (m is a natural number) exposure heads that can be controlled by an external control signal, and the light emission timings of the individual light emitting element arrays directed to the exposure medium can be controlled. And a light emitting control unit of an exposure head, and a printing apparatus that prints an image having nH pixels in the horizontal direction, nV pixels in the vertical direction, and m planes as an input per plane, nH pixels in the horizontal direction and nV in the vertical direction. Interpolated image generating means for generating and outputting an image having pixels as an input image and having n × H pixels in the horizontal direction and k × nV pixels (where k is a natural number) in the vertical direction; Based on the inclination angle θi from the reference position in the main scanning direction due to the attachment error (i is a number corresponding to each head), the value of the target input pixel and / or one or more input pixels around it is calculated. And an image skew calculating means for distorting the input image, wherein the light emission control means causes the exposure head to emit light k × nV times per head per plane.
According to the printing apparatus using this exposure head, the interpolation image generating means takes k times in the vertical direction, that is, the sub-scanning direction with respect to the input image as an image having nH pixels in the horizontal direction and nV pixels in the vertical direction. Generate and output the interpolated image. At the same time, the image skew calculation means calculates the value of the target input pixel and / or one or more input pixels around it based on the inclination angle θi from the reference position in the main scanning direction due to the attachment error of each exposure head. To distort the input image. The light emission control means causes the exposure head to emit light k × nV times, so that each light emitting element of the exposure head takes only binary values of on / off, and even if there is an attachment error of each exposure head, Printing can be performed with high resolution in the sub-scanning direction.
In the printing apparatus using the exposure head, the light emission control unit can control the exposure head in the aspect characterized in the first or second aspect. In this case, an accurate tuning action is obtained in the sub-scanning direction with respect to the light emission timing of the light-emitting element array, and even when a straight line extending in the main scanning direction is printed, a straight line as a whole is printed instead of a zigzag line. It becomes possible.
According to the present invention, even when an exposure head that achieves a high pixel density by combining a plurality of light emitting element arrays is used, a straight line can be printed regardless of the arrangement interval between the light emitting element arrays. Further, when image correction of a light emitting element head mounting error is performed using a binary head, high-quality correction can be performed by reflecting a highly accurate calculation processing result of less than one pixel. Therefore, when these are combined, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide a printing apparatus with high image quality even if an inexpensive LED head such as a binary head is used.
Embodiments of an exposure head control method and a printing apparatus using the same according to the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.

The

On the other hand, the mounting angle error of the
The
FIG. 7 shows a dotted line in FIG. 6, that is, a view that is changed based on the output image side. Further, FIG. 8 shows a case where the pixel density in the vertical direction of the output pixels is doubled. That is, in this embodiment, the resolution of the input image data is nH pixels in the horizontal direction and nV pixels in the vertical direction, but the output after the correction calculation is the same nH pixels in the horizontal direction and doubled in the vertical direction. 2nV pixels are doubled and output. Note that the K plane is a reference plane and has no skew value, so correction calculation is not performed, but the resolution is output as nH × 2nV pixels according to other planes.
B=K1×A1+K2×A2
K1=0(d1>d2の場合)、1(それ以外)
K2=0(d1≦d2の場合)、1(それ以外)
In FIG. 8, the value of the output pixel B is obtained by calculation using the neighboring pixels A1 and A2 as follows.
B = K1 × A1 + K2 × A2
Here, K1 and K2 are coefficients multiplied by A1 and A2, respectively. In this example,
K1 = 0 (when d1> d2), 1 (other than that)
K2 = 0 (when d1 ≦ d2), 1 (other than that)
Here, d1 and d2 indicate the distance between A1 and B and the distance between A2 and B, respectively. That is, for B, the value closer to A1 or A2 is used as it is.
Since d1 and d2 change depending on the skew value θi, the coefficients K1 and K2 are also values corresponding to the skew value θi. Note that the method of determining K1 and K2 is not limited to the above, and various functions can be considered as functions corresponding to the skew value θi, but the description thereof is omitted here. By performing the calculation in this manner, for example, the line of the input pixel indicated by ● in FIG. 8 is converted into the line of the output image indicated by ● in FIG. 9.
The
In this embodiment, the LED heads of the
By performing the processing as described above, it is possible to perform printing with the image resolution increased to twice the original in the vertical direction, that is, in the sub-scanning line direction. Therefore, even when a binary head is used as in the present embodiment, smooth and high-quality correction is performed as shown in FIG. 9 as compared to FIG. 16 in which image processing is not performed as a result of skew correction. Is possible. In the above embodiment, an example is shown in which colors other than K are set to K and K is not corrected. However, a configuration is adopted in which correction is performed so that all colors including K are matched to a separately provided reference position. Also good. As described above, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide a high-quality printing apparatus using an inexpensive LED head.
