Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device using a memory liquid crystal.
The memory-type liquid crystal has a plurality of optical states and has a specific state (memory characteristic) that is maintained without applying a voltage. That is, in the memory-type liquid crystal, the liquid crystal is shifted to the first state by applying a voltage higher than a predetermined positive threshold, and thereafter, the first state is controlled without applying the voltage. It is possible. Similarly, it is possible to control the liquid crystal to shift to the second state by applying a voltage equal to or higher than a predetermined negative threshold, and to maintain the second state without applying a voltage thereafter. is there.
However, since the positive threshold value and / or the negative threshold value of the memory liquid crystal changes depending on the environmental temperature, it is necessary to compensate for such temperature characteristics. In a liquid crystal panel using a memory-type liquid crystal, electrodes for driving the liquid crystal are arranged, and display control of the liquid crystal panel is performed by applying a driving voltage waveform to each electrode. Therefore, as a method of compensating the temperature characteristics of the memory liquid crystal, there is a method of controlling the pulse width of the drive voltage waveform applied to each electrode. However, if the pulse width of the drive voltage waveform is increased, within one frame period. There may be no time margin for applying the drive voltage waveform to all the electrodes. Therefore, in a liquid crystal panel using a memory-type liquid crystal, a method is known in which electrodes for applying a driving voltage waveform are evenly thinned over the entire liquid crystal panel (for example, Patent Document 1).
In order to compensate for the temperature characteristics of a liquid crystal panel using memory liquid crystal, if the electrode to which the drive voltage waveform is applied is evenly thinned across the entire liquid crystal panel, the part of the display screen that is not rewritten is not selected. There was a problem that it was generated along the electrodes and proper display could not be performed. For this reason, if a drive voltage waveform having a variable pulse width is applied to all the electrodes, there is a problem that one frame cycle must be changed and display control becomes complicated.
In view of the above, an object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device that can perform good display regardless of changes in environmental temperature.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a liquid crystal display device that can perform good display without changing the frame period regardless of changes in environmental temperature.
In order to solve the above problems, in the memory type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the first transparent substrate, the second transparent substrate, the memory type liquid crystal sandwiched between the first and second transparent substrates, A liquid crystal panel formed on the first or second transparent substrate and having a plurality of electrodes for driving the memory-type liquid crystal, a temperature sensor, and a display control unit for controlling a driving voltage applied to the plurality of electrodes The plurality of electrodes are arranged separately in the first region and the second region of the liquid crystal panel, and the display control unit is selected from the electrodes arranged in the second region according to the output of the temperature sensor. The number of electrodes to which the drive voltage is applied is controlled to be variable.
In the memory-type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, it is preferable that the display control unit performs control so that the number of electrodes to which the drive voltage is applied is reduced when the temperature detected by the output of the temperature sensor decreases. Only in the second region, the number of electrodes applied in one frame period was controlled to be small.
Further, in the memory type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the display control device controls so that one frame period in which the drive voltage is applied to all the electrodes to which the drive voltage is applied is constant regardless of the output of the temperature sensor. It is preferable to do. Only in the second region, the number of electrodes applied in one frame period was controlled to be small so that the one frame period was kept constant.
Furthermore, in the memory-type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the display control unit controls the pulse width of the drive voltage applied to all the electrodes to which the drive voltage is applied so as to vary according to the output of the temperature sensor. It is preferable to do. The pulse width was controlled to be variable according to the positive or negative threshold according to the environmental temperature change of the memory liquid crystal.
Furthermore, in the memory-type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, it is preferable that the display control unit performs control so that the pulse width of the drive voltage is increased when the temperature detected by the output of the temperature sensor decreases.
Furthermore, in the memory-type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the display control unit includes a positive threshold value for shifting from the second ferroelectric state to the first ferroelectric state of the memory-type liquid crystal according to the output of the temperature sensor. It is preferable to vary the pulse width in accordance with the temperature change of the negative threshold value that shifts from the first ferroelectric state to the second ferroelectric state of the memory liquid crystal.
Furthermore, in the memory type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the plurality of electrodes are preferably scanning electrodes or signal electrodes of a liquid crystal panel.
Furthermore, in the memory type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, it is preferable that the first area is an area for performing time display and the second area is an area for performing function display. Only the electrodes in the second region that do not need to be frequently rewritten are configured to be variable.
Furthermore, in the memory type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the memory type liquid crystal is preferably a ferroelectric liquid crystal or a cholesteric liquid crystal.
According to the present invention, it is possible to perform a display operation satisfactorily in a memory-type liquid crystal display device regardless of changes in environmental temperature.
Further, according to the present invention, the display control is performed as usual for the first area where the image needs to be frequently rewritten, and the second area where the image does not need to be frequently rewritten is driven. Since the electrodes to which the voltage is applied are made variable, the memory type liquid crystal display device can always display the same display regardless of the environmental temperature.
Hereinafter, a liquid
First, the memory-type liquid crystal will be described by taking a ferroelectric liquid crystal as an example. The memory liquid crystal refers to a liquid crystal having a plurality of optical states and having a characteristic of maintaining a specific state without applying a voltage, and includes, for example, a ferroelectric liquid crystal and a cholesteric liquid crystal.
The ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules take one of two stable positions along the side of the cone (liquid crystal cone) according to the external influence such as an electric field. When a ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates and used as a liquid crystal display device, the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules are in any of the two stable positions described above according to the polarity of the voltage applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystal. Control to be located on either side. One of the two stable positions is called the first ferroelectric state, and the other is called the second ferroelectric state.
図1において、偏光板15a(偏光軸の方向をa)及び15b(偏光軸の方向をb)をクロスニコルに合わせて配置した。
FIG. 1 shows a configuration example of a
As shown in FIG. 1, when the polarizing
Next, switching of the
For example, when a voltage value equal to or higher than V2 is applied to the ferroelectric
The environmental temperature characteristics of the
FIG. 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the
As described above, the polarization axis a of the first

FIG. 4 is a schematic block diagram of the liquid

FIG. 5 shows details of the scanning drive voltage
FIG. 6 shows a display example of the
The
As will be described later, the

FIG. 7 shows an example of a driving voltage waveform applied to each pixel of the
FIG. 7 shows drive voltage waveforms for two frames, in which “ON” indicates white display and “OFF” indicates black display. Here, one scanning period is used to execute display based on one display data. One frame consists of a reset period (Rs) and a scanning period. One scanning period consists of a selection period (Se) and a non-selection period (NSe).
In the reset period (Rs), the
When the display data of the predetermined pixel is ON (white display), a composite drive voltage waveform (c) having a voltage equal to or higher than the positive threshold V2 is applied during the selection period (Se), and the
When the display data of the predetermined pixel is OFF (black display), a composite drive voltage waveform (c) having a voltage equal to or lower than the negative threshold V4 is applied during the selection period (Se), and the
FIG. 8 shows an example of drive voltage waveforms applied to TP1 to TP40 connected to the 40
In FIG. 9, since the environmental temperature has become minus 8 ° C. (temperature range of less than minus 5 ° C. and 10 ° C. or more), the pulse width of the drive voltage waveform applied in the selection period (Se) is set to T2 (> T1). An example is shown. As a result, since the number of scan electrodes to which the drive voltage waveform can be applied during one frame period is limited, the drive voltage waveform is applied to all TP1 to TP25 corresponding to the scan electrodes arranged in the first region. In TP26 to TP40 corresponding to the scan electrodes arranged in the second region, control was performed so that the drive voltage waveform was applied to only one of them (TP26). The state shown in FIG. 9 corresponds to a state where the

As described above, the scan electrodes applied in the
FIG. 11 shows the number of scan electrodes corresponding to the second region selected by the
In this way, the first region that frequently needs to be rewritten and the second region that does not need to be rewritten frequently are distinguished, and the positive and negative of the ferroelectric liquid crystal that changes according to the environmental temperature change. Since the pulse width of the drive voltage waveform to be applied is controlled in accordance with the threshold value, it is possible to perform good display regardless of the environmental temperature.
In the above embodiment, “Felix 015” manufactured by Clariant Co. is used as the
In the above embodiment, the number of scan electrodes selected in one frame period in the second region is changed in five steps according to the change in the environmental temperature, but this is an example. A person skilled in the art can select an optimum control method according to the scale of the liquid crystal or display panel to be used.
