Description
The present invention relates to a medical imaging system having a high-speed multi-wire cable.
(Background of the Invention)
Remote imaging systems are used for human observation or for viewing objects that are not normally accessible to conventional optical imaging instruments. Only a limited size image transducer can be positioned to view the image, and a signal is transmitted to a remote location to view the image. For example, surgeons use optical imaging probes to view internal anatomical parts for diagnosis or surgery. Such a system requires a miniaturized multi-wire cable assembly to transmit image signals recorded by a charge coupled device (CCD) to an external display screen. Other medical imaging systems use an ultrasonic transducer that contacts the patient from the outside, and transmits the internal image to the display device via a multi-wire cable.
In surgery or other applications, it is desirable to reduce the cable size. If the diameter is reduced, the desired flexibility can be easily obtained. However, obtaining a detailed real-time image requires significant bandwidth and requires a number of separate conductors with a predetermined frequency capability. A very small number of conductors are required and very thin conductors are used to prevent the cables from becoming undesirably thick. The entire conductor is shielded to limit electrical noise and interference with high frequency signals. A typical solution is to use thin coaxial wires, which are bundled in the cable. Each wire includes its own shield that provides adequate protection to prevent interference at high frequencies.
Many coaxial assemblies are suitable, but have some drawbacks. The cost of manufacturing a thin coaxial wire is higher than acceptable for many applications. Terminating very thin coaxial wires is complex and expensive. Further, the coaxial wire has to be provided with a predetermined space between the core conductor and the shield, and is undesirably bulky.
In order to perform low voltage differential signal (LVDS) communication, twisted pair wires have been used effectively so far. However, the twisted pair has critical limitations for the finest gauge wires and the high frequencies required for a given application. One problem is that if the twisted pair wires are bundled so as to be united and surrounded by a suitable conductive shield layer, the twisted pair wires have different electrical characteristics with respect to the shield. Can be mentioned. Some pairs are forced to be closer to the shield than others, resulting in common mode impedance differences, and signal skew occurs because signals arrive at different times through different pairs. Such skew limits the signal rate that can be used and creates particular problems with the very thin conductors required for slim, flexible cables that require a large number of lines.
Another drawback of current systems is that because there is no light source, the surgeon's hand must transmit light through the fiber optic bundle using a second cable. Coordinating separate cables is difficult for the surgeon and the patient must have a larger surgical opening. Furthermore, efforts to combine these two cables into one have created stiffer cables that lack the desired flexibility due to their overall size.

(Content of disclosure)
The present invention solves the problems of the prior art by providing a flexible cable having a first end and a second end in an optical imaging system. The cable has a central core that includes a flexible light conduit, and a number of wires surround the core element to form a tube that is coaxial with an axis defined by the center of the core. The cable has a conductive shield layer that surrounds the wire and is uniformly spaced from the wire. An electronic device is connected to the first end of the cable, the electronic device having an illuminator connected to the light conduit and a display device connected to the wire. An image transducer is connected to the second end of the cable, and this transducer is also connected to the wire. These wires may be twisted pairs that are uniformly spaced from each other and even from the axis defined by the core.
FIG. 1 shows a
これら光ファイバーのまわりには内径が4.064cm(0.160インチ)で、外径が5.08mm(0.200インチ)の螺旋金属外装層22が巻かれている。

Each of the twisted pair wires 14 includes two helically twisted wires that are insulated from each other and housed in a similar pair of sheaths, as described below. Nine twisted pairs are provided, but this number may be varied without limitation depending on the requirements of the particular application. Each twisted pair sheath has a diameter of 0.762 cm (0.030 inches) so that each sheath can abut the surface of the core over its entire length and can also abut each adjacent paired sheath. It has become. This allows each pair to be maintained at the same controlled distance from the core conductors and from adjacent pairs.
In a preferred embodiment, the twisted pair is spirally wound around the core. As a result of the wrap angle, each pair can complete one turn of the core over a cable length of 3.87 cm (2.0 inches). This wrap angle may vary slightly to accommodate variations in pair sheath diameter and core sheath diameter. If these pairs are sized to abut against each other and with the core, at least one when the diameter of the pair varies slightly from the nominal value or the core diameter varies slightly from the nominal value The pair will move out of contact with the core. However, this problem can be prevented by deliberately making the pair a little smaller (and / or a larger core). In this case, the expected gap between the pairs that occurs when the pairs are parallel to the core can be prevented by winding the pairs in a spiral. The degree of wrap angle is actually determined by the geometry of the pair and core, the smaller the pair diameter, the greater the wrap angle (and the shorter the length of a pair of complete spirals for one revolution). ).

A conductive shield 32 is tightly wound around the bundle. This shield is a braided wrap of 38 AWG copper wire and has a specific coverage of at least 90%. Since the dimensions of the spacer sheath are controlled, the shield is spaced the same distance from each pair of lines.
こうして仕上げられたケーブルは9.906mm(0.39インチ)の外径を有する。

シースに囲まれた各ワイヤは3.81cm(0.015インチ)の外径を有する。 FIG. 2 shows a single twisted pair 14 in detail. Each wire of this twisted pair has a conductor 40 made of 32 AWG copper, which is surrounded by an insulating sheath 42 made of a 0.762 mm (0.003 inch) thick fluoropolymer material. Each wire surrounded by a sheath has an outer diameter of 0.015 inches. These wires are spirally wound with a twist rate of 3 revolutions per inch. In some applications, these twist rates may be processed at different rates to prevent unwanted interference between adjacent pairs. For example, the twist rate may be varied between two different values so that adjacent pairs do not interact. The wires are in contact with each other along their entire length on the axis. In the preferred embodiment, the wires are housed in a cover 44 made of a polymeric material. The cover is co-extruded around the wire to have an outer diameter of 1.145 cm (0.045 inch), ie, 1 to 1/2 times the diameter of the pair.
As described and illustrated in the preferred embodiment, this cable has been found to allow a data rate of 100-655 Mbit / s per pair. This value was obtained with a cable having a length of 18-120 inches (45.72-304.8 cm). Very thin wires are required to ensure flexibility in applications where connected components (eg, for input devices or transducers connected to computing equipment or electronics) must be moved comfortably However, if a longer cable length is required for other purposes, a thicker conductor will be required. Although these wires are disclosed in the preferred embodiment, the principles implemented can be used, but these wires are less suitable when repeated flexibility is required.
