Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an optical waveguide used in the field of optical communication and the like, and more particularly to an optical waveguide having a low polarization dependent loss and a method for manufacturing the same.
A planar waveguide, which is a typical optical waveguide, is manufactured by forming a lower clad layer, a core layer, and an upper clad layer on a silicon or quartz substrate. FIG. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view sequentially showing manufacturing steps in a conventional method for manufacturing an optical waveguide. In the conventional method of manufacturing an optical waveguide, first, as shown in FIG. 1A, a first method is used on the surface of a
However, when an optical waveguide is formed by embedding the
As described above, in the conventional method of manufacturing an optical waveguide, when quartz glass is deposited on the core as the upper clad layer by the CVD method, the FHD method, or the like, bubbles A are formed in the vicinity of the core branching portion. There is a problem that optical characteristics such as propagation loss and polarization dependency of the waveguide deteriorate.
On the other hand, in the method of using a low melting point glass such as BPSG as the material of the upper clad layer and reflowing it at a low temperature, heating at about 800 ° C. is required even if the temperature is low, so it is used as a substrate or a lower clad layer. The residual stress remains after reflow due to the difference in thermal expansion between the material such as quartz glass and the low melting point glass such as BPSG, and this residual stress causes the polarization-dependent loss (hereinafter referred to as PDL) of the optical waveguide. ) And other optical characteristics are degraded. In addition, there is a problem that the upper clad layer cannot be reflowed uniformly, the embedding becomes uneven, and bubbles may remain in a portion between a plurality of cores approaching each other.
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and an object thereof is to provide an optical waveguide having a low PDL and a manufacturing method thereof.

In the present invention, a core layer made of a material having a higher refractive index than the lower clad layer is formed on the lower clad layer of the substrate, and then the core layer is etched to form a core having a waveguide structure.
According to the present invention, the first upper clad layer made of glass having a low reflow temperature is formed on the core and the lower clad layer, and this is reflowed, whereby the upper clad layer in the region where the cores of the optical waveguide are close to each other is formed. Embedding is improved, and bubbles are less likely to remain in the region, so that deterioration of optical characteristics such as transmission loss and polarization dependency due to remaining bubbles can be reduced.
In addition, since the thin first upper clad layer is formed on the lower clad layer and the core and the second upper clad layer is formed thereon, the residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion between the lower clad layer and the upper clad layer. PDL of the core can be reduced by surrounding the core with the first upper clad layer whose stress has been relaxed.
