Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an electrophotographic or electrostatic recording type image forming apparatus such as a copying machine or a laser beam printer, and more particularly to a contact type transfer for transferring a visible image on an image carrier onto a recording material such as paper. The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus using a member.
For example, an image forming apparatus such as an electrophotographic laser beam printer is an electrophotographic photosensitive member that is generally a rotating drum type as an image carrier, that is, a photosensitive drum, an image forming process means for primary charging, image exposure, and development. A toner image as a visible image corresponding to target image information is formed on the surface of the photosensitive drum, the toner image is transferred to a recording material such as paper by a transfer unit, and the recording material is further introduced into a fixing unit to form a toner. The image is thermally fixed as a permanently fixed image on a recording material and output as an image formed product (copy, print).
Since the transfer means has an advantage that the conveyance path of the recording material can be simplified and the conveyance can be stabilized, a contact rotation type transfer member, a so-called transfer roller, has been frequently used in recent years.
In the transfer roller, an elastic layer is provided on the outer peripheral surface of the conductive metal core, and the elastic layer is made conductive. The resistance value is adjusted to about 10 6 to 10 10 Ω, but this resistance value is likely to fluctuate due to the influence of environmental temperature and humidity. Furthermore, the conductive agent is deteriorated by energization of the transfer roller, causing long-term resistance fluctuations. Variations in the resistance of the transfer roller induce problems such as poor image transfer, color variations, scattering, and paper marks.
このような印加転写電圧制御手段として、例えば、特許文献1に開示されたATVC(Active Tranafer Voltage Control)が知られている。
Therefore, in order to prevent transfer defects and paper marks due to resistance fluctuations of the transfer roller, the resistance value of the transfer roller is measured, and the transfer voltage (transfer bias) applied to the transfer roller is appropriately controlled according to the measurement result. The applied transfer voltage control system is employed. As such an applied transfer voltage control means, for example, an ATVC (Active Tranfer Voltage Control) disclosed in
The ATVC control is a means for optimizing the transfer voltage applied to the transfer roller at the time of transfer, and can prevent the occurrence of transfer defects, paper marks, and the like. In the ATVC control, a desired constant current is applied from the transfer roller to the photosensitive drum during the pre-rotation process of the image forming apparatus, and the resistance of the transfer roller is detected by measuring the voltage value generated at that time. At the time of transfer, a voltage corresponding to the resistance value is applied as a transfer voltage to the transfer roller by constant voltage control.
By devising this control system in various ways and increasing the frequency of control, it is possible to cope with subtle resistance fluctuations and reliably prevent transfer defects and paper marks due to resistance fluctuations of the transfer roller.
By the way, with the increase in the speed and the image quality of laser beam printers, usage methods such as short delivery time printing and mass printing called print-on-demand are expanding.
In such a usage method, when the control like the above ATVC is frequently performed, not only a transfer defect does not occur, but also a high quality image with almost no hue variation and scattering is obtained from the viewpoint of high image quality. On the other hand, from the viewpoint of speeding up, it becomes a factor that reduces the printing speed. That is, a job that prioritizes image quality and a job that prioritizes speed cannot be satisfied simultaneously.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to solve the above-described problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide an image forming apparatus in which usability is improved by minimizing tint fluctuations and scattering.
To achieve the above object, the present invention provides a transfer member for transferring a visible image on an image carrier to a recording material, a transfer bias applying means for applying a transfer bias to the transfer member, and the transfer member during non-image formation. Recording material information detected from the detection means in an image forming apparatus having a control means for detecting the resistance and determining the output of the transfer bias applying means at the time of image formation and a detection means for detecting the type of the recording material Accordingly, the time required for the control for determining the output of the transfer bias applying means at the time of image formation is changed.
According to the present invention, even if the resistance value of the transfer member of the transfer unit changes, it is possible to provide an image forming apparatus that minimizes color fluctuation and scattering and improves usability.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Toner and other foreign matters remaining on the intermediate transfer belt 130 are wiped onto the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 130 by the
The intermediate transfer belt 130 used in the image forming apparatus having the above-described configuration is a dielectric sheet such as a PET sheet, a polyvinylidene fluoride sheet, or a polyurethane sheet as described above, and the volume resistivity thereof is 10 9 to 10. 16 Ω · cm is common.

In the present embodiment, as described above, the resistance unevenness is 1.5 or less, that is, Imax / Imin ≦ 1.5.

In the present embodiment, the low-temperature and low-humidity environment to the high-temperature and high-humidity environment is divided into seven environments, and the paper types are plain paper first side, second side, thick paper first side, second side, coated paper first side, second side, and OHP sheet. It is set in detail and registered in the memory.

That is, knowing the resistance fluctuation of the
Next, the resistance change of the
The resistance change of the
As described above, the resistance value of the transfer roller fluctuates in the short term and in the long term, and this resistance variation causes a deviation from the optimum value of the transfer bias. As a result, problems such as transfer defects, color variations, and scattering occur.
Next, resistance detection of the

According to the present invention, the resistance of the transfer roller is detected as follows according to the environmental value E recognized by the
A constant current bias having a constant current value I is applied to the
In this embodiment, the process speed is 200 mm / second. The transfer bias was controlled by detecting the resistance of the transfer roller. The optimum transfer current value in a low-temperature and low-humidity environment varies depending on the paper type, but is approximately 20 μA to 40 μA.
Therefore, at the time of non-image formation, for example, the constant current value I of the constant

The voltage value of the
On the other hand, since the measurement is performed for three rotations of the transfer roller with one current, it takes 0.47 seconds × 3 rotations × 4 current values = 5.64 seconds. That is, the throughput varies greatly between when this measurement is performed and when it is not performed.
Therefore, the priority of image quality and the priority of throughput can be selected by changing the frequency of this measurement depending on the importance of copying by the user.
First, in the case of image quality priority, this control is performed for every 25 copies. When the priority is given to throughput, this control is the same for every 100 copies, and the current measurement points are not 10, 10, 30, 40 μA, but 10, 20, μA. As a result, the control time becomes 2.82 seconds.
The number of images formed per minute in this image forming apparatus is about 50 sheets of A4 size plain paper. Accordingly, in the image priority mode in one hour, the throughput is increased by about 10%. Such image priority or productivity priority may be input to an instruction means that can be determined and input by the user. In addition, the image forming mode may be designated as a high image quality mode or a high productivity mode, and the control method may be varied according to this setting.
As described above, it has been possible to provide an image forming apparatus in which usability is improved by minimizing tint fluctuations and scattering.
<
In this embodiment, the configuration is such that the priority of the image is automatically determined using the detection means for detecting the paper type.
The configurations of the image forming apparatus and the transfer roller are basically the same as those in the first embodiment.
Recording materials used in electrophotography can be broadly classified into recycled paper with low gloss on the paper surface, plain paper with normal gloss, coated paper with high gloss, and cast coated paper. These gloss levels are considered to be related to the image quality desired by the user. That is, it is considered that high-gloss paper requires high-quality image formation, and conversely low-gloss paper does not require high image quality.
Therefore, the glossiness of the paper is detected and the ATVC control timing is changed.
Next, a media sensor that is paper type detection means will be described.
In this embodiment, a media sensor is used to determine the set paper type. The media sensor is sensed until it is transported from the manual feed unit and the paper feed cassette and goes to the intermediate transfer member.
FIG. 5 shows a schematic configuration of the media sensor 1000.
The media sensor 1000 measures glossiness by a method defined in JISZ8741. In other words, the measuring method is to measure a light beam with a specified opening angle incident at a specified incident angle and reflected with a specular reflection direction with a light receiver. In FIG. 5, the light beam irradiated by the light source 1001 passes through the lens 1002 and enters the recording material P at an angle θ. Then, the light beam reflected in the specular reflection direction is detected by the light receiver 1004 through the lens 1003. By disposing the glossiness detection mechanism in the paper feed unit, the surface gloss of the recording medium itself can be detected. In the present embodiment, surface gloss is detected with an incident angle θ of 60 °.
In JISZ8741, the amount of reflected light with a refractive index of 1.567 is defined as 100 glossiness. In accordance with this rule, Table 1 classifies the types of recording media according to glossiness.
By the way, when the glossiness is detected in this way and the glossiness is 60 or more, the above four points are controlled every 10 sheets. When the glossiness was 10 to 60, the above four points were controlled every 50 sheets. When the glossiness was 10 or less, the above four points were controlled every 100 sheets.
The control interval and the number of copies per hour are summarized in Table 2 below.
<
In the present embodiment, the measurement time is variable according to the priority of the image quality, while the measurement of one current is performed in the rotation time of three rotations of the transfer roller in the first embodiment. . The measurement interval was once every 50 sheets.
In addition, the media sensor used in the second embodiment was used. The configurations of the image forming apparatus and the transfer roller are basically the same as those in the first embodiment.
Table 3 shows the relationship between the glossiness of this embodiment and the measured rotational speed.
In this embodiment, the secondary transfer roller of the intermediate transfer roller is used, but it goes without saying that the present invention is not limited to this.
If the system uses a conductive transfer roller, the effect can be obtained even in a black and white image forming apparatus. The same effect can be obtained with a multiple transfer system using a transfer belt or a transfer drum. The same effect can be obtained with an intermediate transfer type primary transfer roller. Further, the transfer roller is not limited to the configuration of the present embodiment, and needless to say, the conductive roller is effective. In the present embodiment, a solid rubber roller is used, but a sponge roller may be used. The material used is NBR rubber, but other rubber materials such as EPDM may be used. Moreover, although an ionic conductive agent is used as the conductive material, a conductive agent such as carbon black may be used.
The present invention relates to an electrophotographic or electrostatic recording type image forming apparatus such as a copying machine or a laser beam printer, and more particularly to a contact type transfer member for transferring a visible image on an image carrier onto a recording material such as paper.
