Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a projection-type image display apparatus that irradiates light from a light source to a light valve such as a liquid crystal panel to form an optical image corresponding to an image signal and project it in an enlarged manner.
Liquid crystal projectors for business use are becoming widespread. Further, as an alternative to a conventional image display apparatus that projects an image displayed on a cathode ray tube onto a screen, a projection television using a liquid crystal display element has been developed. In particular, home projection televisions are required to have more faithful color reproducibility, high contrast performance, and quick video display performance than commercial liquid crystal projectors.
In the case of a liquid crystal reflective light valve, since the liquid crystal layer is reciprocated twice by reflection, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer can be halved compared to the transmissive type. If the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is halved, the response speed is quadrupled, which is advantageous for displaying moving images.
In a projection type projector apparatus using a liquid crystal reflective light valve, in general, a polarization wave having a predetermined polarization direction having a function of a polarizer and an analyzer is transmitted in front of the reflective light valve, and a polarization direction orthogonal thereto. Polarization separation means for reflecting the polarized wave is arranged. Such conventional techniques are described in, for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2001-56449 (Patent Document 1) and Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 10-55037 (Patent Document 2).
In these conventional techniques, three sets of reflective light valves for red, green, and blue light and polarization separation means are arranged, and the three-color light is color-combined by a cross dichroic prism.
As the polarization separation means, in general, for example, a PBS prism formed by forming a polarized beam splitter (hereinafter referred to as PBS), which is a dielectric multilayer film, at the interface between two right-angle prisms, for example, US Pat. 234, 634 (Patent Document 3), there is a wire grid type polarization separation element in which a diffraction grating having a wire grid structure is formed on a translucent substrate.
FIG. 6 is an explanatory diagram of various polarization separation systems. FIG. 6 (1) shows a case where a PBS prism is used as the polarization separation means, and FIGS. 6 (2) and 6 (3) show wire grid type polarization separation elements. This is the case.
In FIG. 6 (1),
6 (2), a wire grid type
6 (2) and 6 (3), the peak value of the extinction ratio at 45 ° incidence is low, but the degradation of the extinction ratio with respect to an angled ray is small. For this reason, the contrast performance as the whole light beam is good. However, the wire grid type polarization separation element has the following problems. That is, the wire grid type polarization separating element of FIG. 6 (2), the

In view of the above situation, the problem of the present invention is that in the projection-type image display technology, a temperature increase in a polarization separation means having a polarization separation surface that separates light by diffraction based on a grating structure, such as a wire grid type polarization separation element. It is to suppress deformation by heat and to suppress astigmatism and total reflection.
An object of the present invention is to provide a projection-type image display technique that can solve the above-described problems and ensure high image quality.
In order to solve the above-described problems, in the present invention, as the polarization separation means, a configuration in which a polarization separation element is disposed in a medium such as a liquid having a refractive index of light larger than 1, and the polarization separation element, A polarization separation surface for polarizing and separating light by diffraction based on a lattice structure such as a wire grid structure is provided, and an air layer is formed in contact with the polarization separation surface. Further, as the projection type image display apparatus or optical unit using the polarization separation means, the light irradiated to the light valve by the polarization separation surface inclined at an angle of less than 45 ° with respect to the light irradiation surface of the light valve and the light unit The light modulated by the light valve is polarized and separated. Further, the polarization separation means has its light incident surface tilted from the direction perpendicular to the incident light direction, and the direction of the incident light beam is orthogonal to the direction of the outgoing light beam that is polarized and separated by the polarization separation surface and perpendicularly enters the light valve. To be done.
According to the present invention, in the projection type image display technology, it is possible to suppress the temperature rise of the polarization separation element unit and at the same time to ensure the high image quality of the image.
The best mode for carrying out the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.
1-3 is explanatory drawing about the inclination of the total reflection in a polarization separation means, and a polarization separation surface. FIG. 1 is an explanatory view of total reflection generated by the polarization separation means, and FIG. 2 is an optical path explanatory view when the polarization separation surface of the polarization separation means is inclined at 45 ° with respect to the light irradiation surface of the light valve. FIG. 3 is an explanatory diagram of an optical path when the polarization separation surface is inclined at an angle of less than 45 ° with respect to the light irradiation surface of the light valve.
In FIG. 1, in order to reduce the astigmatism generated in the wire grid type polarization separation element of FIG. 6 (2), the wire grid type
In general, when dealing with the refraction and reflection of light rays at the boundary between a medium having a large refractive index of light and a medium having a small refractive index, attention must be paid to total reflection. In FIG. 1A, when the refractive index of the
Means for avoiding the total reflection will be described with reference to FIG. In the polarization separation means 10B of FIG. 1 (2), the wire grid
As described above, the wire grid polarizer having the air layer is disposed in the liquid at an angle of less than 45 ° with respect to the reflective light valve, and the illumination optical system for the wire grid polarizer (illustrated). By making the incident angle of incident light from (None) below the critical angle at the interface between the liquid and the air layer, it is possible to reduce astigmatism, total reflection, deformation due to heat, and the like.
2 and 3 are optical path diagrams of each color light after color separation in the illumination optical system.

FIG. 4 is a configuration example diagram of the polarization separation means in the present invention, and FIG. 5 is a configuration example diagram of a projection type video display apparatus as an embodiment of the present invention. In addition, the same code | symbol is attached | subjected to the part which has the same function as the structure shown in the said FIGS.
In the present invention, as the polarization separation means, a wire grid type polarization separation element having a polarization separation surface in which a diffraction grating having a wire grid structure is formed on a light transmissive substrate is used. A transparent container filled with a medium containing N and having a thin air layer formed at the interface between the polarization separation surface and the medium is used. The polarization separation means is disposed such that the polarization separation surface forms an angle of less than 45 ° with respect to the light irradiation surface of the reflective light valve. That is, the polarization separation means is configured such that light incident on the polarization separation surface is incident on the polarization separation surface at an angle of incidence of less than 45 ° (45 ° −θ), and the light polarized and separated by the polarization separation surface is The light is emitted at an angle of reflection less than 45 ° (45 ° −θ) and incident perpendicularly to the light irradiation surface of the reflection type light valve. The light incident surface of the polarization separation means is tilted from the direction perpendicular to the incident light direction, and the direction of the incident light and the direction of the outgoing light that is polarized and separated by the polarization separation surface and perpendicularly enters the reflective light valve. Are orthogonal to each other.
In the polarization separation means, in order to eliminate total reflection at the interface between the medium and the air layer, the following relationship is established between the inclination angle θ of the polarization separation surface and the refractive index N of the light of the medium. It is necessary to do so.

tan α = sin 2θ / (N−cos 2θ) (Equation 3)
Here, since γ and 90− (2θ + α) are in a relationship of a complementary angle, the following equation 4 is obtained.
γ=2θ+α …(数4)
γ = 2θ + α (Equation 4)
Further, when the refracted light beam L1 ′ is incident on the wire grid type
Further, the S-polarized light incident on the reflection type
In FIG. 4 described above, the incident surface is rotated around the point A without changing the point A where the light beam L1 on the optical axis of the illumination optical system (not shown) is incident on the polarization separating means, that is, Although the case where the incident wall surface 19Bi is rotated so as to overlap the incident wall surface 19i has been shown, the center of the surface of the polarization separating means 10 facing the

FIG. 5 is a structural example diagram of a projection-type image display apparatus as an embodiment of the present invention using the polarization separation means 10 of FIG.
In FIG. 5, 11 is a light source, 12 is a reflector, 131 and 132 are first and second multi-lens arrays as integrators, 14 is a plate-type polarization conversion means comprising a prism array, and 151 is a collector. Optical lenses, 152 and 154 are field lenses, 153 are relay lenses, 161 and 162 are dichroic mirrors, 163 are total reflection mirrors, 101, 102 and 103 are polarization separation means, and 171, 172 and 173 are P-polarized light. Wire grid type polarized
The light emitted from the
The light rays on the optical axis of each color of the illumination optical system are incident on the incident surfaces of the polarization separating means 101, 102, 103, and the light traveling direction is bent by, for example, about 14 ° by refraction. The wire grid type
According to the embodiment of the present invention, astigmatism, total reflection, heat deformation and the like in the polarization separation unit can be suppressed, and high image quality of the image can be maintained. In addition, the illumination optical system and the entire apparatus can be made compact.
In the above embodiment, the wire grid type polarization separation element is used as the polarization separation means. However, the present invention is not limited to this. For example, the light diffraction is performed on the translucent substrate at a predetermined period. For example, a configuration using a polarization separation element having a polarization separation surface formed with projections and depressions may be used. The light valve is not limited to a reflective light valve, and may be a transmissive light valve. The light valve may be other than a liquid crystal panel. Alternatively, the color mixing may be performed by the cross
